Akeredolu not yet back, says Ondo Govt

Ondo State Government has said that Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is yet to return from his medical leave.

It said Governor Akeredolu was still in Germany where he went for medical treatment since June.

Ondo Assembly in July extended the Governor’s medical leave indefinitely.

A viral video, which showed Governor Akeredolu disembarking from an helicopter captioned ‘Welcome back’, caused a buzz whether the Governor had secretly returned to the State.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Richard Olatunde, in a statement on Sunday, said Governor Akeredolu was still in Germany and focused on his full recovery.

Olatunde explained that the viral video was captured during the Governor’s campaign tour in preparation for the last Presidential and National Assembly elections.

He said Governor Akeredolu would soon return to the State to continue executing his administration’s Redeemed agenda and providing impactful governance.

According to him: “While we acknowledge the eagerness of the people of the state, as well as supporters and well-wishers from both within and outside the country to have the Governor back, we want to clarify that Governor Akeredolu is currently in Germany, focused on his full recovery.

“Governor Akeredolu extends his deep appreciation to the citizens of Ondo State for their unwavering prayers and support. Their genuine concern and compassion have been instrumental in aiding his recovery journey.

“It’s important to note that his commitment to delivering positive and lasting development remains steadfast.

“Governor Akeredolu is eagerly looking forward to reuniting with the people of the sunshine state. He is deeply moved by the outpouring of love and support, and he can’t wait to continue working towards a brighter future for Ondo State.”

JUST IN: Hoodlums raze monarch’s houses, vehicles in Imo

The residence of the traditional ruler of the Ndia Iche Arondizuogu community in the Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State, Eze Kanu Ikenolu, has been razed by armed hoodlums.

The royal father however narrowly escaped death as the hoodlums did not meet him at home when they arrived his palace, it was gathered.

The hoodlums, who stormed the home of the monarch in the early hours of Sunday, shot sporadically causing panic in the community as villagers, including the monarch’s family fled into bushes for their safety.

It was learnt the attackers also threw explosives into the mansion, which led to the massive destruction of the house, properties and vehicles parked at the compound.

The Nation gathered that the compound which houses the traditional ruler’s home and his palace was filtered by the debris of the destroyed building.

A villager who did not want to be named for security reasons said that properties worth millions were destroyed by the hoodlums.

He decried the police’s inability to intervene on time as they were told that the hoodlums were attacking the monarch’s home.

The villager said: ” The palace of HRH Eze Ikenolu, the Eze of Ndia iche Arondizuogu has been invaded by the gunmen and the people are in the bushes now.”

He wondered why “Until now no response from the police to stop the hoodlums from further destruction of the palace of HRH  Eze Kanu in Ndianiche Arondizuogu, where cars, houses and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed. Anytime Arondizuogu is under siege the police hardly come to the people’s rescue, it makes us also wonder if the place is no longer part of Imo State.”

Imo Police spokesman Henry Okoye, who confirmed the arson to newsmen, said: “Frantic efforts are on top gear to arrest the arsonists and bring them to justice.”

  • Why petrol subsidy had to go, by ex-Minister

Why petrol subsidy had to go, by ex-Minister

Immediate-past Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clement Agba, has backed the Bola Tinubu Administration on petrol subsidy removal, saying it was unsustainable.

“Removal of petrol subsidy is one right decision taken by the new administration, as well as the unification of exchange rates,” he said.

Prince Agba spoke in Asaba, the Delta State capital, during a series of events organised by the Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors in honour of the late Supreme Court Justice, Chukwunweike Idigbe on Friday and Saturday.

The late Justice Idigbe founded the law firm in 1947.

Friday’s events included the inauguration of the “Hon. Justice Chike Idigbe e-Library & Resource Centre” donated to the Asaba Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) by the Punuka Foundation; a public lecture in honour of the late Justice Idigbe, organised by the NBA branch, and a dinner event tagged “An evening with Prof Poonam Puri”.

The highpoint of Saturday’s events was the inauguration of the “Hon. Justice Chukwunweike Idigbe Museum and Youth Centre”, which was preceded by the Holy Mass at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Asaba, and a visit to the Asagba of Asagba’s Palace.

Prince Agba, who chaired the Friday night event, said Nigeria could not continue to subsidise petrol consumption for other countries while it has an infrastructure deficit of $2.5trillion.

“The only way to way to make omelets is to break the egg and I’m happy the current government is doing that,” he said.

Prince Agba, who believes that the private sector should drive the economy, called for increased impact investment to help grow local communities.

“Impact Investing are investments made with the intention to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside financial returns.

“It is growing and gaining a reputation as a more sustainable way of investing across the globe.
“The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) estimates the size of the worldwide impact investing market to be $1.164 trillion.

“A major reason for its wide acceptance is that it offers a huge potential to address development challenges and a veritable source for bridging the SDG financing gap, estimated to be $2.5 trillion annually.

“Government’s role in promoting impact investing in Nigeria will include building an ecosystem of regulatory framework and oversight by strengthening the industry infrastructure through appropriate regulation, as well as establishing sufficient leadership to monitor the market.”

Puri, a professor of law at the Osgoode Hall Law School of York University in Toronto, Canada, highlighted the important public financing role of the Canada Infrastructure Bank, which she believes Nigeria can learn from.

She also stressed the need for an efficient dispute resolution mechanism to encourage investments, adding that clear and simple rules are needed.

“I believe in regulation, but over-regulation can be harmful to the economy.

“Also, when businesses need licenses, it should be easy to get. It should not take months or years to obtain a permit,” she added.

Principal Partner at Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors, Chief Anthony Idigbe (SAN) said the year-long events were designed to honour his father, who would have been 100 years on Saturday.
He said the museum would preserve the legacy of Justice Idigbe – his experiences, life’s lessons and his contributions to jurisprudence.
The youth centre, he said, has an internet-equipped library, offering research opportunities for youths who need quiet surroundings to study.
“There is sufficient space for seminars and other programmes to empower the youth. We hope to partner with the state government to deliver on the programmes,” the SAN said.

The centre also has a gazebo, which Chief Idigbe said can be used to stage plays or recitals as well as other creative displays.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Obarevwori, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, paid tribute to the late Justice Idigbe and lauded the family for immortalsing him.
“I am happy to be part of this deserved honour being accorded to Justice Idigbe by his family and the NBA.
“It is most befitting that having traversed the legal profession and became a judge of the Supreme Court, the legacy he left behind should be given a life of its own to serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement to members of society, especially members of the NBA and the youths.
“No doubt, a museum in his honour will definitely harbour his works, especially the indepth judgments he gave as a judge in the High Court, and as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
“From 1946 when he became a lawyer, he began to blaze a trail as he set up his chambers in Warri in 1947.
“In spite of the interregnum caused by the civil war, he still rose to become a judge of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
“Months to his anticipated elevation as the Chief Judge of the Supreme Court, nature intervened and he went in a blaze of unblemished glory to meet his creator.”

The Asagba of Asaba, Prof Chike Edozien, shared fond memories of the late Idigbe, who he said was a year ahead of him in secondary school and loved to play the piano.

“It’s a day of joy to recognise our brother who left us many years ago. He taught me how to play the organ but I could never play it as well as him because God gave us different talents.

“I am happy we’re celebrating Chike’s immense contributions to Delta, the Judiciary and to Nigeria in general,” said the 99-year-old monarch, who marked his birthday on July 28.
The events were graced by dignitaries from the Bar, the Bench, captains of industry, among others.

He said allegations by Obaseki on Thursday evening at his Jattu hometown in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo during a meeting with Etsako leaders and elders were untrue.

Shaibu noted that there were concerted efforts by some mischief makers and political jobbers to destabilise Edo and widen the gulf between him and Obaseki, insisting he remained loyal to his boss.

Shaibu declared that he was taken aback by Obaseki’s “outburst,” while stating that he would never contemplate a coup against a man who gave him so much latitude to work.

He noted that the allegations were not only baseless but malicious attempts by those he described as persons bent on misleading Obaseki with the aim of damaging his reputation.

He was reported to have said: “As the Deputy Governor, my role is to support and complement Edo Governor and his agenda.

“I have consistently advocated policies and initiatives that align with this administration’s goals and aspirations.

We need more Christians in politics, says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called for participation of more Christians in politics to make it clean instead of dirty.

He said ordinarily, politics should not be a dirty game but those who participate in it makes it dirty.

Speaking at the 57th annual convention and 67th anniversary of The Gospel Faith Mission International (GOFAMINT) at Gospel City, Ogunmakin, Ogun State, Obasanjo said Christian must stand out among corrupt people and bad influencers of the world while participating in politics.

The former President while speaking on the theme: ‘The roles of the Church in nation building at a time like this,” said believers

must stick to the values of Christ and ask themselves all the time, ‘What will Christ do if He finds himself in the circumstances that I find myself?

He said at a time the country is facing various challenges, church must rise up to the occasion as the salt of the world.

According to him: “We are in the world, yet we are not of the world. The influence of corrupting corruption is enormous. We are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. We are to be like Jesus who, when He was in the world, did not belong to the world.”

He urged churches to demand for justice, fairness and equity in the social, political and economic life of the nation.

General-Overseer of GOFAMINT, Pastor (Dr) Elijav O. Abina recalled his visit to Aso Rock Chapel when Obasanjo he was President.

He said he met Obasanjo teaching Sunday School, saying when they spoke on his arrival at the convention ground, the former President told him to his astonishment that he is still teaching Sunday School classes.

  • Oyo APC knocks ex-lawmaker over call for excos dissolution

Oyo APC knocks ex-lawmaker over call for excos dissolution

The Oyo chapter of All Progressive Congress (APC) has knocked Sen. Ayoade Adesun over his call for dissolution of all executive committees of the party.

APC described the call as mere wishful thinking of Adesun whose knowledge of constitutional democracy it said cannot stand the test of time.

Adeseun said in a live radio interview programme monitored in Ibadan that there were plans to replace the current executive committees of the APC in Oyo state with Interim committee as a prelude to repositioning of the party.

But a statement by Oyo APC chairman Isaac Omodewu said Adeseun threw caution into the wind again during the interview, accusing him and others of orchestrating needless crisis in the State.

Omodewu stated that Adeseun is not a member of the APC at the moment as he worked assiduously for the ACCORD party in the recently concluded general election.

According to him: “We can recall that Sen. Adeseun emboldened others to reject all efforts made to placate them to remain in the APC following their disappointment at the end of the party primary conducted to pick candidates for the 2023 general elections.

“He gave them false hope about using another party to win election but at the end of the day, many people were made to waste collosal resources only for most of them to end up working for Gov. Seyi Makinde of the PDP even when their own Accord fielded candidates in the same election.”

“Adeseun is only doing what he knows how to do best in the field of politics but he should be reminded that nature has its way of rewarding people. If an individual has been a member of about seven different political parties in the last 15 years and he is now making funny claims on air, he should blame himself if the old and young ones now see him as a confused clown.”

“Immediately after the 2019 general election, Adeseun was everywhere telling the whole world how he was cheated in the PDP by Gov. Makinde and his narration was similar to what claimed led him to leave the same PDP for ACN in 2010 when he sought to wreck his kinsman (late Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala) but he failed. He then then left the ACN for the PDP in 2014 because he felt a need to wrestle power from late Sen. Abiola Ajimobi. What an unstable and controversial man he is.”

“The current APC executive committees are products of legitimate congress and there is no place for fiat in our democracy that would empower the likes of Sen. Adeseun to order the dissolution of party executive committees even reasonable people would like to ask in what capacity he acted when he made the obnoxious remarks on radio.”

“Adeseun, in his naivety, should have also asked for the sack of the executive committees in all the states where APC lost the governorship election or rather ask all those who won, in the 2023 election, on the platform of Oyo APC to vacate their office.”

“As far as we are concerned, we have our eyes on the ball and we will not leave any stone unturned to ensure that  all aggrieved members who left our party in 2022 and new members from other political parties are attracted to Oyo APC. Our efforts have yielded positive results.”

“Oyo APC remains a party to beat and recently we received gubernatorial candidate of Labour Party, Alh. Tawfiq Akinwale, and that of Action Peoples Party, Alh. Kazeem Ayandoye as well as their numerous supporters into the APC while many of those who left in 2022 have also returned.”

Brighton thrash Premier League debutants Luton Town 4-1

Luton’s first match back in the top flight for 31 years ended in heavy defeat as Joao Pedro and Simon Adingra marked their debuts with a goal each in a comfortable Brighton win.

Solly March headed in after 35 minutes before Pedro, signed for a club-record fee around £30m from Watford, scored a second-half penalty following a foul by Luton captain Tom Lockyer.

The Hatters pulled a goal back with nine minutes remaining when last season’s top scorer Carlton Morris converted another penalty – awarded for handball against Lewis Dunk – but 21-year-old Ivorian Adingra sealed the Seagulls’ win by slotting home after a bad mistake from Luton’s Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu.

Pedro, 21, should have opened the scoring after five minutes but scuffed a gilt-edged chance wide from eight yards.

The Seagulls, who left midfielder Moises Caicedo out of their squad amid interest from Chelsea and Liverpool, also hit the post three times.
