I was worried about Banky W’s decision to join politics – Wife

Actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington has revealed how fear and uncertainty enveloped her when her husband, Olubankole Wellington aka Banky W, informed her about his desire to join politics.

In 2018 November 11, Banky W announced his intent to run for the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency seat on the platform of the Modern Democratic Party.

He lost the Eti-Osa Federal Constituency election to Babajide Obanikoro of the All Progressives Congress(APC) on 23 February, 2019.

He contested for the same seat in the 2023 elections on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and  lost to the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Attah Thaddeus.

Speaking during a recent interview with Hip TV, Adesua said she was initially “worried” and “disturbed” when the singer revealed his intention to join partisan politics.

She said she later decided to support him because “purpose is more important than fear.”

She said: “When Banky said that he wanted to go into politics, I was a little bit worried and disturbed about it.

“But I also believe that purpose is more important than fear. And I want to see him fulfil purpose. So, he has my support 100 per cent.”

BOMA 2023 summit: AU to mobilise investment for biotech AI startups

Today, July 8, African leaders will be hosted by President Azali Assoumani of Comoros, the Chair of the African Union (AU); the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Monique Nsanzabaganwa; Ambassador Albert Muchanga, the AU Commissioner for Trade & Industry; to host some of Africa’s leading statesmen and business leaders at a Summit marking African Integration Day dubbed the “Boma of Africa”.

Some of the statesmen making an appearance include South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa; President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana; and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria.

At the Boma, the assembled leaders will discuss and deliberate on how the might and reach of the African Union can be used to support the next generation of African unicorns (exponentially growing startups) that will revolutionise new sectors like biotech, gene editing and genomics, and artificial intelligence on the continent.

The goal, according to the AU, is to channel investments to create a massive impact on health, trade, local manufacturing and job creation through a new framework called the 4D pact, which derives its objectives from Agenda 2063, the AU’s overarching blueprint for making Africa a global force to reckon with in the next few decades.

Other eminent dignitaries, world leaders, and African principals expected to speak and deliberate on the 4D Pact today at the summit include Ethiopian president Sahle-Work Zewde, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, Ms. Reeta Roy of Mastercard Foundation, Dr. Jean Kaseya of Africa CDC, Mr. Wamkele Mene of AfCFTA and Professor Lisa Korsten of the African Academy of Science.

The continental leaders are coming together to, in the words of the AU, “articulate a game-changing action plan to harness the power of technology as an enabler, to foster a culture of collaboration and to propel scientists, startups, university spinoffs, and innovators to new heights.”

Other major heads of agencies that the AU will be working with in the actualisation of the continental project in line with the new 4D Pact are also on the lineup. They include Nardos Bekele-Thomas, CEO, AUDA-NEPAD; Mamadou Biteye of ACBF; Professor Benedict Oramah, Executive Chairman of Afreximbank; and Adefunke Adeyemi, Secretary General, AFCAC, the agency promoting the Single Air Transport Market for Africa.

Tidjane Thiam, the prominent AU Special Envoy and international banker, who founded and currently chairs Freedom Acquisition Corporation, has been announced as the inaugural speaker at the Summit in a special lecture series on globalisation and its impact on Africa dubbed the “Sankore Lectures”.

Speaking about the event, Bekele-Thomas said, “Startups and even spinoffs from African Universities come up every year with clever and groundbreaking products and technologies but most of these fail to scale, holding back Africa’s industrialisation and leaving the continent dependent on critical technologies and commodities from overseas such as vaccines, medicines, AI models, biotech products etc. 4D will mark a shift.”

It was also revealed in briefing documents shared with this newspaper by AU strategists that African Union institutions like the AfCFTA Secretariat,

Africa CDC, AUDA-NEPAD, AFCAC, and ACBF will mobilise tens of millions of dollars from development finance institutions and aid agencies to implement the objectives of the 4D Initiative to make Africa self-reliant in some critical technologies. The AU disclosed that some major philanthropies, aid agencies, and development finance institutions have already committed to the vision.

The Africa Finance Corporation, BADEA and Afreximbank are early supporters of the overall vision.

According to a statement from the AU, the 4D initiative will build on the Trillion Dollar Fund (TDF) announced in 2020 by the Assembly of Heads of State, which focused on driving trade in goods manufactured in Africa under the AfCFTA. 4D will deepen the TDF’s initial focus by emphasising the role of neglected value chain actors in Africa’s stalled industrialisation drive and by providing “soft infrastructure” to strengthen the hands of such actors, like startups and university spinoffs, in the form of “mega-platforms” like the AfCFTA Hub, PanaBIOS, ProPer, Tranzyt and Transforma. These soft infrastructure platforms will greatly lower transaction costs and enhance public-private coordination to eliminate harmful and wasteful compliance barriers and duplicative cross-border regulations and therefore amplify the effect of the funds to be provided to private sector actors through 4D.

Speakers at the 2023 BOMA summit will deliberate on ways and means to make Africa competitive in carefully targeted technological domains such as biotech innovation, digital health, artificial intelligence and green economy & cleantech systems. A Value Chain Accelerator called, BioNovac, is being set up to speed up commercialisation collaborations across research institutions and the continent’s startup ecosystems.

In a similar vein, researchers at African universities through spinoffs will be supported by the initiative, while AfroChampions, one of the AU’s strategic partners, will advisory, advocacy, technical assistance resources and the like to sustain momentum at the country level.

The 2023 BOMA summit will, according to AU strategists, clearly provide an opportunity for the African leaders to mark Africa Integration Day with concrete pledges and commitments to accelerate continental development proving that the AU is not a talkshop but an engine for Africa’s transformation.

Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road for completion 2024 -FG

The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing has assured Nigerians the ongoing reconstruction project of Abuja – Kaduna – Kano Express Way will be completed in the first quarter of 2024.

The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Mahmuda Mamman stated this while speaking with newsmen shortly after inspecting the ongoing project yesterday.

The House of Representatives had within the week ordered the Ministry to speed up the completion of the project, following a motion by the Member Representing Kaduna North Federal Constituency, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai who expresses concern about the slow pace of the project.

The Permanent Secretary attributed the slow pace of the project to the security challenges hitherto experienced on the Abuja-Kaduna axis of the road, stressing that, now that the situation has improved significantly, the contractor has promised to complete the whole project by first quarter of 2024.

He emphasised the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing would stand on the timeline given by the contractor to ensure it completion.

According to Mamman: “Before coming to Western bypass, we started this journey from Abuja – Kaduna – Kano Expressed way, the essence of the visit is familiarisation and monitoring, we are outside the office to come and see practical challenges because if we don’t go out we cannot see the problem.”

He explained the essence of the familiarisation visit was for them to see the challenges and find solutions to mitigate the problem.

Mamman also expressed satisfaction with the quality of the road project, urged the contractor to deliver on the stipulated time.

The Permanent Secretary pointed out that, because of the terrible nature of Kaduna Western bypass, he and his team would mandate the contractor assigned to fully commence the work.

He further stated that, for the western bypass, the project has no any funding issue while for the Abuja – Kaduna – Kano expressed way it had challenges of funding.

Police kill four sit-at-home enforcers in Enugu

Operatives of Enugu Police Command have crushed a four-man gang of gunmen, who attempted to enforce an illegal weeklong sit-at-home in Enugu in the early hours of Friday.

Enugu police spokesman DSP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in Enugu, late Friday night, recalling that police had earlier on the same day reported that operatives of the Awkunanaw Division of the Command intercepted and engaged the criminals in a gun duel at One-Day, Awkunanaw, Enugu, as they were snatching an Enugu State Transport Company, ENTRACO-branded Sharon mini van at gunpoint for their deadly operation.

Although they managed to escape with serious gunshot injuries, a thorough search conducted on the vehicle led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle with a magazine loaded with 19 live ammunition of 7.62 calibres, two bottles of petrol bomb and other incriminating exhibits.

JUST IN: Oby Ezekwesili backs three-year sanction on Mmesoma

A former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has backed the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on sanctions against Ejikeme Mmesoma, the candidate accused of manipulating her Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) test scores.

The Nation reports JAMB barred Mmesoma from taking its exam for the next three years.

Ezekwesili said there was need for such sanction to serve as deterrence to others in the future.

She, however, recommended sustained counseling for Mmesoma as she reflects through the tragic episode.

Reacting, Ezekwesili on her official Twitter handle, said: “Mmesoma and @JAMBHQ  Saga: I have just read the report of the Committee set up by Anambra State Government  to investigate and report their independent findings on the Mmesoma and JAMB Saga.

“I am satisfied with the process and findings of their investigation which gave Mmesoma fair hearing to enable the Committee gather all facts.

“It was necessary to have independent evidence that the result Mmesoma laid claim to publicly was not only fake but that the forgery was personally orchestrated by her.

“There are usually syndicates at the center of perpetration of exam malpractices in Nigeria but it appears not to be so in Mmesoma’s case from the facts of the Committee’s report.

“Mmesoma’s action has consequences. I therefore support the sanctions imposed by JAMB as a deterrent to all who participate in the systemic exam malpractices within our educational system.”

Ezekwesili commended the exam body for its good work and critical service to the country.

“I also recommend sustained counseling for Mmesoma by the family, school and church to support her as she reflects on this tragic episode and makes a decision to embrace values and rewards of effort while eschewing dishonest gain for the rest of her life.

“I do hope that the lessons of this case will help all our pupils, students, parents, guardians and the public at large renew a collective commitment to uphold Exam Integrity in Nigeria as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s Values and Reward System for our children and youth.

“I wish to thank JAMB for their good work and encourage the Registrar and his team to continue with their critical service to our country and people as we all join them to sustain raising of awareness on Exam Integrity.”

  • NAFDAC raids hawkers of unwholesome drugs, seizes goods worth N45m in Abuja, Niger

NAFDAC raids hawkers of unwholesome drugs, seizes goods worth N45m in Abuja, Niger

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Friday in Abuja raided hawkers of unwholesome drugs at the Nyanya/Mararaba axis of Abuja.

Addressing newsmen after the exercise, the team leader of the operation, Mr Umar Suleiman, said the operation followed an earlier surveillance carried out by officers of the enforcement unit of the agency .

Suleiman, who is an Assistant Chief Regulatory Officer, Federal Task Force, Investigation and Enforcement, NAFDAC, said that the operation was also to confirm if Baban Aisha Herbal product were still in the market.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the agency had some few weeks ago raided Baban Aisha production factory along Abuja/Kaduna road for selling unregistered herbal products.

NAFDAC had alleged that Baban Aisha had only registered some of his herbal medicine, using the privilege of the registered ones to sell others which were yet to be registered.

The agency also raided and sealed Al-Nassar Islamic Herbal medicine store, No. 151 Minna Road, Suleja, Niger State.

Meanwhile, Suleiman said that those doing advert on Baban Aisha products were not permitted for now.

He said that the agency was able to nab five of the hawkers of the unwholesome drugs, where one of them escaped.

“Most of the drugs we seized in the Suleja shop are sex enhancers (Manpower), sex enhancers drug like Night Rocket, Black diamond, double rocket, AK-47 and many more.

“We also seized other herbal preparation medicine such like transformer, maibulala, maibusher.

“At that particular shop alone in Suleja, drug found there worth N35 million, and for the hawkers, we have an estimate of N10 million.

“Some of the drugs in the Suleja shop are even not herbal, with ponographic pictures which are not approved by NAFDAC. You can see that he is selling them in bulk, it’s like the owner of the shop is a dealer.

“We believe that if we tackle the dealer, retailers will not have access to buy from the source, this is why we do our traceability to get the source, we have been able to discover the main supplier in Suleja now,” he said.

Suleiman said that NAFDAC is planning to extend its search operations to other regulated products like food, cosmetics, medical devices, detergent, package water and chemicals.

According to him, the agency is still working on drug products because of the effect on the body, since people used it daily.

He said the agency would soon commence its search mission on pharmaceutical stores, and their warehouses all in the aim of ridding the country of counterfeit and fake drugs.

Suleiman commended NAFDAC Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, for her support to the investigation and enforcement unit of the agency, saying that such support had strengthened its operation.

Embugushiki Godiya, Desk Officer, Investigation and Enforcement, Federal Task Force, NAFDAC, commended the media for support to the unit, adding that the media’s role had projected the activities of the unit.

He said that the raid would send a signal to other people out there that are planning to sell the same unwholesome medicines.

“Today’s operation is a very successful one for us, we are using this medium to call on all Nigerians to stop patronising hawkers of drug medicine.

“If Nigerians stop patronising these people, there will be nothing for them.

“We want to thank the media because with them, our enforcement activities have been heightened in the recent time,” he stressed.

  • Idiroko border reopening saga and smugglers’ desperation

Idiroko border reopening saga and smugglers’ desperation

    • By, Mahmud Abdulsalam

Smuggling into Nigeria did not start this year, last year, or the penultimate. It has always been perpetrated by criminals and economic saboteurs, for decades. The smuggling business is a crime anywhere in the world, but in this part, it appears to be unending, defying every practical solution in spite of concerted efforts.

Among the several commodities and goods imported illegally into the country is rice, the most popular staple carbohydrate food. Rice smuggling has since assumed a frightening proportion, hurting private businesses and the economy. Domestic production of the agricultural item has equally been hampered.

Dozens of personnel of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) involved in anti-smuggling operations lost their lives during fierce battles with armed persons and gangs, while reports abound of how the precious lives of some Nigerians were cut short after eating unhealthy and toxic rice varieties imported.

Many citizens still remember the so-callled ‘plastic rice’ brought into the country in large numbers, reportedly from China, in 2016. It took the intervention and determination of the Customs to curb the inflow of the adulterated rice which flooded different markets that time.

Another incident happened in 2017, when the Federal Government warned that there were certain brands of poisonous foreign rice being sold. Reacting, the then Comptroller-General of Customs, Colonel Hameed Ali (retd) decried the situation and advised citizens to stop purchase and consumption.

He said: “A chemical must have been added to sustain its freshness and that chemical is harmful. Also, it has been re-bagged with a new date given as the production and expiry date. That is what we consume which causes diseases. I appeal to Nigerians to patronize our rice, it is available and more nutritious. If you do, you assist Customs by making sure these people are put out of business.”

Rice importation, Ali added, remains one of the biggest challenges facing the Customs. As part of finding a permanent solution to the menace, former President Muhammadu Buhari, in August 2019, ordered the closure of four major land borders over illegal importation of drugs, arms and agricultural products from neighbouring countries.

But in December 2020, the immediate past Nigerian leader ordered the reopening. For about a year that the borders were shut, local rice production was boosted. According to the Rice Processors Association of Nigeria (RIPAN), the Border Restriction Policy implemented by the Buhari government jerked up the demand for homegrown and locally processed rice.

This caused an increase in both the production of paddy rice, as well as rice processing facilities. In 2020, during the coronavirus era, farmers produced as much as 8.2 million tons of paddy rice and another 8.4 million tons in 2021. At the time, all of the paddy produced was taken by the rice processors/millers who processed and supplied good-quality rice.

Even as the borders were closed and the COVID pandemic raged on, Nigeria did not experience food shortage, particularly rice, but the numbers in metric tons of paddy rice produced by farmers began to decline a few months after the borders reopened. Smuggling recommenced in earnest, dropping the volume of paddy offtake by rice processors/millers.

It is on record that upon the reopening, official rice import to Benin Republic from Thailand rose from a meager monthly average of 5,000 metric tons in 2019, to a monthly average of 26,861 metric tons in 2022. Recently, PRNigeria reported that about 35,749 bags of foreign rice were impounded by the NCS between January and April this year.

It was due to the renewed war by the Customs that the quantity of what was seized stopped at the figure given. To this end, the NCS strides in tackling smuggling must be sustained. The Nigerian government should know that unscrupulous elements are bent on frustrating the anti-smuggling war of the Customs and advocacy of groups such as RIPAN.

In June, an old video which showed how Customs personnel reopened the Idiroko border in 2021 was all over social media. The mischievous people behind it apparently wanted to dent the early days of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom they claimed ordered the re-opening immediately after assuming office.

But the goal of those who re-circulated the video failed. First to disprove the authenticity was Customs spokesperson Abubakar Maiwada as he confirmed all the borders were reopened months ago. “All our major borders are open. The video showing the Idiroko border opening is a very old video that a mischief maker repackaged to create a wrong narrative,” Maiwada explained.

The Area Controller of NCS in Ogun State, Mr Bamidele Makinde also dismissed the viral video. While addressing journalists at the Customs Command in Abeokuta, the capital, Makinde stated that the Idiroko border had resumed exports and imports since 2022.

While lending credence to the statements of the NCS officials, RIPAN accused enemies of the Nigerian economy of a sinister motive. It said culprits were individuals/groups attempting to undermine the new administration and promote illegal activities like rice smuggling from Benin Republic, Cameroon, and Niger Republic.

The Director General, Andy Ekwelem assured of the organisation’s dedication to support the efforts of federal agencies to improve food security and well-being of the populace. Ekwelem urged the authorities and stakeholders to be watchful and avoid the machinations of those who seek to sabotage the government, and exploit the nation’s big brother role within the sub-region.

It is imperative for the Customs and other security agencies to step up the tempo of dealing with rice smugglers and other economic wreckers. The damage these criminals have done to the country and the people is unimaginable. Citizens must not continue to battle all sorts of health challenges occasioned by consuming unhygienic foreign rice.

The circumstances surrounding the circulation of the old video also need to be thoroughly investigated. The sponsors must be fished out and made to face the music as such would send a stern message to their cohorts. Now is the right time to wage another merciless battle against the unending importation of foreign rice into Nigeria.
