Daniel appeals to Ogun people on APC e-registration, Tinubu’s re-election

    • …reaffirms commitment to Ijebu-Remo state creation

Former governor and current Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, has called on residents of Ogun State, particularly those in the nine local governments of Ogun East Senatorial District, to take advantage of the ongoing APC e-registration process and register as party members.

Speaking on Sunday in Ikoto community, Odogbolu Local Government Area, during the Bola Ahmed Tinubu–Gbenga Daniel (BATOGD) mid-term community tour and assessment, Daniel urged constituents to become active APC members to support both his and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bids.

The public endorsement of Daniel and Tinubu for their respective re-election campaigns followed a motion moved by Dr. Abayomi Lawal, an engineer and Baale of Erebe community, and seconded by former federal lawmaker and ex-chairman of Remo North Local Government, Hon. John Obafemi.

Daniel emphasised that the BATOGD Movement focuses on accountability, community engagement, people-driven representation, and advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, while also promoting the development of Ogun East.

He said, “The E-Registration process for the All Progressives Congress (APC) has now commenced. I want to implore all our citizens, young and old, men and women, to take full advantage of this opportunity.

“Register and become full members of the party so that you can actively support Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and our own Senatorial bid for re-election. Please visit your party ward Secretariat starting next week to complete your registration.

“Since we formally launched the BATOGD /Movement on September 21, 2025, at Ìgodè in Sagamu Local Government, this Odogbolu tour today marks the 7th in this series of engagements over the past few months.

“The BATOGD Movement (which supports Bola Ahmed Tinubu / Otunba Gbenga Daniel) is about accountability, community engagement, people-driven representation, and unwavering commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda of our President, while advancing the development of Ogun East.”

Daniel also appealed to the people concerning the clamour for a new state from the old Ijebu province, warning that, given the current circumstances (stunted growth) facing Ijebuland, the last real hope for accelerated and sustainable development in the area lies in the prospect of creating the envisaged new state.

The ex-governor said that he remains committed to the creation project, revealing that all stakeholders were on the verge of reaching a consensus on the name and the Capital of the State; Ijebu-Remo State.

He warned that if the stakeholders failed to decide for themselves, especially by consensus, other people may be asked to make those decisions for them.

He said, “As your Senator, we have undertaken significant work behind the scenes on this and other matters.

“I have deliberately chosen not to make much noise until we have successfully crossed all the necessary hurdles. The parameters and requirements for state creation are enormous and rigorous. Overcoming them demands nothing less than unity of purpose among our people.

“The old Ijebu Province, which forms the basis of this aspiration, consists of 9 Local Government Councils. Anything short of this full complement cannot guarantee a successful process.

“The minimum and most critical requirement to achieve the creation of this state is unity of purpose. If the National Assembly cannot discern that unity among us, we cannot guarantee success. We must unite.

“Let me inform you that we are on the verge of reaching a consensus on the name and the Capital of the State; Ijebu-Remo State. If we fail to decide for ourselves, especially on this consensus, other people will take those decisions for us.

“You will agree with me, that I don’t usually touch things that I cannot complete, and on this State creation project, I am fully committed.”

Rivers: Wike knocks critics over call for his sack by Tinubu

    • …reaffirms grip on Rivers’ votes

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Sunday described those calling for President Bola Tinubu to sack him as ‘jokers’.

Wike said it is not within their power to advise Tinubu on what to do regarding his appointment as minister.

The minister also shunned criticisms trailing his political choices, insisting politics is driven by interests, power, and the will of the people, not sentiment or emotions.

The Minister stated this during the grand finale of his “thank you” tour to Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, his political base, where he addressed a massive crowd of supporters and political leaders.

While speaking, Wike said that his decision to venture into politics was deliberate and not accidental.

To his detractors, the minister explained that he chose to be a politician and not a pastor, a trader, a public commentator or journalist, urging them to allow him play his politics.

According to him, “I did not say I wanted to be a journalist. I did not say I wanted to shape public opinion through writing. I said clearly that I wanted to be a politician, and that is what I am.

“For those who are crying left, right, and centre, it’s your business. You cannot be a politician and at the same time a trader, and at the same time a pastor. No, you must choose what you want to do.”

He added that his visit to Obio/Akpor was borne out of gratitude, noting that acknowledging support is a fundamental principle of leadership.

“This time, I called on you, and you responded positively. I felt it was important to come back and say thank you. When someone does something good for you, you acknowledge it. Gratitude matters,” Wike said.

According to him, there is no sentiment or emotion in politics; what matters is interest, the interest of the people.

He added that, “power is not given but taken,” saying, “for the people of Obio/Akpor, we have the power to dictate who becomes a governor in Rivers.

“Nobody has become governor in this state without Obio/Akpor making a pronouncement; nobody has become a senator of Rivers East without Obio/Akpor making a decision.

“So, if you like, abuse us, after abusing us, come and look for our votes, and we will punish you with the votes.

“Don’t bother about people who say ‘sack him.’ If my appointer believes that I cannot offer anything again, he has the right; it is not in your place to tell him what to do.”

He said President Bola Tinubu knows his worth and, as such, does not need anybody to tell him what to do.

The minister said Tinubu has done so much for Rivers people, stressing that the people would return the favour in 2027.

He said, “We will use our strength to punish them. We will use our strength and punish people. So you have to take us softly so that we don’t get angry with you. Nobody has become governor in this state without Obio/Akpor making a pronouncement. Nobody has become a senator of Rivers East without Obio/Akpor making a decision.

“So, if you like abuse us, after abusing us, come and look for the votes. And we will punish you with the votes.”

Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, had earlier pointed out that Obio/Akpor has over 684,000 votes out of the 3.5 million registered voters in Rivers State.

Chinda, who represents the LGA in the Green Chamber, said that with such voting strength, nobody would challenge the political power of the LGA in the state.

“Just go home. Tell us what you want us to do, and we will do it,” he told the minister.

Chairman of the Council, Dr Gift Worlu, described Wike as a “gift” to the LGA, the state, and the country, due to his outstanding performance in public service at the local, state, and national levels.

Worlu thanked the minister for the many things he had done for the people of the LGA, adding that supporting the election of Tinubu in 2023 had led to the harvest upon harvest of benefits for the people.

He assured the minister that the people know where to go in the 2027 presidential election in the state.

Speaking on the gubernatorial election, the chairman said, “We do not know where to go yet, but we know where not to go.”

Also, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, reassured the minister of the full support of the people in the local government area.

Amaewhule added that members of the State Assembly would continue to pray for him and support his call for the re-election of Tinubu for a second term.

“Tell Mr President that what we did for him in 2023, we will do even better in 2027. We have concluded this matter with our decisions in the house. I don’t need to talk too much again.”

Court reinstates Prof. Igwe as Fed Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu’s medical director

The National Industrial Court (NICN) in Abuja has quashed the suspension and termination of the appointment of Prof. Monday Igwe as the Medical Director of Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu State.

Justice Emmanuel Subilim, in a judgment, held that the procedure adopted in terminating his appointment was flawed and subsequently ordered Dr. Igwe’s reinstatement.

Justice Subilim said, “From the foregoing comprehensive analysis, and having carefully weighed the evidence on the preponderance of probabilities, this court finds that the claimant (Dr. Igwe) has discharged the heavy burden of proof placed upon him.

“The procedure adopted for the purported termination of the claimant’s appointment was arbitrary, illegal, and a fundamental breach of the mandatory statutory provisions and regulations governing his employment.

“Consequently, the termination is hereby declared null and void, and of no effect whatsoever. I so hold,” the judge held.

Justice Subilim, in the judgment delivered on December 11, 2025, a certified true copy (CTC) of which was seen on Sunday, set aside the appointment of Dr. Unaogu Ngozichukwu Nneka as Dr. Igwe’s replacement.

In the judgment on the suit marked: NICN/ABJ/130/2024, the judge noted that Dr. Ngozichukwu’s appointment, which was done during the pendency of the suit, was overreaching and unlawful.

Defendants in the suit were the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare; the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare; the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare; the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF); Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare; Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu, Enugu State and the Medical Director, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu State, Dr. Unaogu Ngozihukwu Nneka.

Justice Subilim ordered that Dr. Igwe be reinstated to complete his remaining three years and five months, which is left of his tenure of office.

The judge also issued an order directing the payment of the claimant’s emolument from September 2023 to the date of delivery of the judgment.

Justice Subilim added, “It follows therefore, the reliefs (a) (b), (c), (d), (e), (f) and (g), as sought by the claimant, hereby succeed in their entirety.

“On relief (h) which is a claim of general damages, the court held, “From the evidence before this court, the salary of the claimant was unlawfully stopped when he was suspended in September 2023.

“I have already made an order for the payment of all his emoluments from September 2023 to date, which addresses the specific financial loss of salary.

“However, the claimant has also suffered significant distress, inconvenience, reputational damage, and disruption to his career and personal life as a direct consequence of the arbitrary and unlawful termination of his statutory employment.

“In view of these factors, and having considered the totality of the circumstances, I hereby award the sum of N3m,” he said.

The judge struck out the name of AGF from the suit because the claimant was unable to establish involvement of AGF’s involvement in the case.

NARD exco meets over planned strike, court’s restraining order

Ahead of a nationwide strike scheduled for Monday, the Nigeria Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) is set to begin a virtual National Executive Council (NEC) meeting while insisting that it remains focused on its demands despite a court order restraining the industrial action.

The strike, initially planned for Monday, 12 January 2026, came amid growing tensions over unfulfilled demands, until the Federal Government secured a restraining order from the National Industrial Court on Friday, 9 January 2026.

There are, however, indications that the union’s decision to strike is guided solely by the outcome of internal deliberations, rather than government pressure, the restraining court order, or the possible invocation of a no-work, no-pay policy.

A source familiar with the development, who pleaded anonymity, told The Nation that, “The Executive Council meeting will be starting now, so once we round up, the information will spread everywhere.

“We are only focused on our issues; the court order is not our concern. It’s what we are able to get from the government that will prevent it (strike). It’s not the court restraining order.

“We are not intimidated by the court order, so it’s not the issue of the court order we are discussing; it is what has been so far accomplished,” the official said.

He emphasised that the union’s priority is the government’s response to their demands, rather than any legal or police intervention.

“Even before the court order came, we had already decided we were going to have this meeting. So, it’s what the government was able to do that we are currently concerned with; it’s not the issue of any court action.

“We have had similar issues in the past, and we know how we will find our way, so that’s not our major concern now.

“Are we able to get the minimum demand? That’s what we are going to analyse at the E-NEC, for the members to look critically and make decisions,” he said.

When pressed further on whether the government has met any of the union’s demands since the last update, the source declined to reveal, pleading patience while promising that the outcome would soon be made public.

The command said the step was in furtherance of its commitment to intelligence-led policing, swift response to crime, and protection of the lives and property of residents of the state.

A statement by the spokesman of the Command, Ayanlade Olayinka, said, “In demonstration of the Command’s prompt response to threats against public safety, on Friday, 9th January, 2026, at about 0900hrs, the Command received a report through the Iwéré-Ìlè Division regarding the abduction of two minors, Hadu Abubakar (male, 15 years) and Sadari Abubakar (male, 14 years), both of Akinsapon Village near Ayétòrò-Ìlè, by unknown gunmen.

“Acting swiftly on the report, the Divisional Police Officer, Iwéré-Ìlè Division, mobilized a joint security team comprising Police operatives and other partners. This coordinated and intelligence-driven operation culminated in the successful rescue of the two kidnapped minors, who were safely reunited with their family, and the arrest of four suspects, thereby preventing further harm and restoring public confidence within the community.

“In order to ensure a thorough unraveling of the network behind the crime, the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, PSC, has directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Anti-Kidnapping Squad for discreet and comprehensive investigation.

“Similarly, and in further proof of the Command’s zero tolerance for violent crimes, the Oyo State Police Command also recorded a decisive breakthrough in a murder case reported at the Ago-Are Division, Atisbo Local Government Area.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that Umaru Saidu (male, 40 years) and Umaru Gambo (male, 37 years) had an altercation with Seidu Amisu (male, 20 years) at Budo Fatti area, Ofiki Village, over issues relating to the rearing of cattle. The disagreement escalated into a physical struggle, during which Umaru Gambo allegedly beat Seidu Amisu to death with a stick.

“Following the incident, and upon realizing that the victim had died, the suspects, in an attempt to conceal the crime, allegedly enlisted the assistance of Umar Abubakar (male), Usman Seidu (male), Muhammed Aliu (male), and Musa Abubakar (male), and secretly buried the victim without the knowledge of his family or the Police.

“Acting on credible intelligence, the Divisional Police Officer, Ago-Are Division, embarked on an intelligence-led investigation, which resulted in the arrest of all seven suspects. The suspects are currently in custody, have confessed to the commission of the offence, and are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.

“In line with the Command’s standard operational procedure for serious crimes, the Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Homicide Section, for thorough and discreet investigation.”

The Oyo State Police Command assured people in the state that these achievements reflect its sustained operational readiness, intelligence-driven policing framework, and zero tolerance for criminality.

“The Command remained proactive and resolute in preventing crime, swiftly responding to security threats, and ensuring that perpetrators are decisively dealt with in accordance with the law.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, PSC (+), reiterates that no criminal act will be allowed to thrive in any part of the State, and that individuals or groups who attempt to undermine public peace and security will be relentlessly pursued and brought to justice.

“Residents are therefore urged to remain calm, law-abiding, and confident in the capacity of the Police and other partners to safeguard lives and property.”

The FHA boss also revealed that about 400 housing units under the Bwari Housing Project in Abuja were over 80 per cent completed and expected to be commissioned in the first quarter of the year.

He added that about 70 per cent of the Abuja units were allocated to individuals in the informal sector, including artisans and self-employed persons, to promote inclusivity beyond civil servants.

Ojo encouraged Nigerians interested in owning FHA houses to apply early through the authority’s website or zonal offices nationwide, noting that early applications would aid proper screening and inclusion during the construction phase.

  • Arewa Think Tank backs Tinubu’s reforms, says Nigeria already experiencing economic rebound

Arewa Think Tank backs Tinubu’s reforms, says Nigeria already experiencing economic rebound

The Arewa Think Tank has endorsed the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, asserting that Nigeria is no longer waiting for recovery but is already experiencing signs of substantive economic rejuvenation.

Convener of the group, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, made the remarks while responding to recent positive economic indicators, aligning with the view of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Deputy Governor, Dr. Tunde Lemo, who recently stated that the country is “seeing light at the end of the tunnel” after a challenging period of reforms.

Yakubu agreed with Lemo’s assessment but argued that the progress is more pronounced, declaring that “the light at the end of the tunnel is already shining.” He credited the emerging stability to the courage and political will demonstrated by President Tinubu in implementing far-reaching reforms despite their initial discomfort.

He also applauded the President’s enthusiasm over the Nigerian capital market surpassing the ₦100 trillion mark in market capitalisation, describing the feat as a significant vote of confidence in the economy and a validation of the administration’s reform trajectory.

President Tinubu, through a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, celebrated the milestone as historic, describing it as evidence of renewed investor confidence and the emergence of a new economic reality.

According to the statement, the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) All-Share Index closed 2025 with a strong return of 51.19 per cent, outperforming major global indices, including the S&P 500 and FTSE 100.

The President said this performance places Nigeria among the world’s best-performing equity markets and signals that the country is no longer a frontier market to be ignored.

Yakubu said these developments validate the President’s insistence that tough reforms were unavoidable if Nigeria was to escape economic collapse.

He also referenced Dr. Lemo’s warnings that without the removal of fuel subsidy, tax reforms, and monetary tightening, Nigeria could have plunged into a deeper crisis.

Lemo had cited declining inflation, improved exchange-rate stability, and easing food pressures towards the end of 2025 as evidence of resilience.

Yakubu said the Arewa Think Tank believes the gradual deceleration of inflation, stabilisation of the naira, and renewed activity in the capital market show that the reforms are beginning to yield results.

“The ₦100 trillion NGX milestone, the decelerating inflation figures, and renewed investor confidence are not coincidences. They are outcomes of deliberate and courageous leadership,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to exercise patience and continue to support the administration, adding that sustainable growth requires shared sacrifice.

According to him, President Tinubu’s pledge to build a transparent, inclusive, and high-growth economy driven by fiscal and tax reforms offers hope that Nigeria is firmly on the path to recovery.

“The journey has been tough, but the signs are clear. The tunnel is behind us, and the light is already shining,” Yakubu concluded.
