JUST IN: Nasarawa Senator Onawo dumps PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another blow with the resignation of Senator Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo, representing Nasarawa South Senatorial District.

In a letter dated January 10, 2026, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Galadimawa Ward in Doma Local Government Area, Onawo formally announced his immediate exit from the party.

“I write to formally notify you of my resignation as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Galadimawa Ward, Doma Local Government Area, with effect from today, 10th January, 2026,” the senator stated.

He explained that the decision followed “careful consideration” and was taken “purely for personal reasons,” while expressing gratitude to the party for providing him the platform to serve.

“I remain deeply grateful for the trust, cooperation, and support I received throughout my time in the party,” he added, wishing the PDP continued progress and success.

Onawo, also known as the Ciroman Doma, becomes the latest high-profile figure to leave the PDP amid persistent internal strains and a series of defections that have affected the party nationwide.

Recent exits include serving lawmakers and former governors, raising concerns about the party’s cohesion and electoral strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While he did not specify his next political destination, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Vanguard hinted on X that Onawo has shown interest in joining its coalition.

His departure is expected to intensify political realignments in Nasarawa State and across the North-Central zone, with close attention on its impact on Senate dynamics and the state’s political landscape.

Edo Police confirm Ekpoma protest was hijacked by hoodlums

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed that Saturday’s protest by residents of Ekpoma, in Esan West Local Government Area, was taken over by hoodlums.

Residents had mounted bonfires and blocked major routes, including the Benin–Abuja highway, to protest the rising cases of kidnapping in the area.

In a statement, the Command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, visited Ekpoma and convened a broad stakeholders’ meeting involving community leaders, student representatives, and other key groups.

The engagement, she noted, was aimed at addressing grievances, promoting peaceful expression, and preventing a breakdown of law and order.

Ikoedem stated that the protest was eventually hijacked, with participants violating the rules governing peaceful demonstrations. The situation led to incidents of malicious damage, looting, shop vandalism, and a case of military personnel discharging firearms at a protester.

She added that additional tactical units were deployed from the Command Headquarters in Benin to restore order, reinforce operational control, and prevent further escalation.

“Through coordinated deployments, strategic positioning of personnel, and professional crowd control measures, normalcy was swiftly restored across the affected areas.

“The Commissioner of Police has personally visited the man who was shot during the protest, 32-year-old Osagie Abraham, who is presently receiving medical attention at Eromoele Medical Centre, Ekpoma.

“The Commissioner of Police assures the public that the Edo State Police Command is deploying intensified intelligence-led operations, strategic patrols, and targeted tactical interventions to decisively curb kidnapping across Edo State, including Ekpoma. The Command remains resolute in doing everything within its available resources to dismantle criminal networks in the state and sustain public confidence.”

Okpebholo vows to tackle kidnappers, cultism in Edo

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said that decisive measures put in place against kidnapping, cultism, and other crimes were already yielding results.

He said his administration has made massive investments in modern security apparatus, intelligence gathering, and inter-agency collaboration to confront criminal elements head-on.

The Edo Governor was reacting to a protest by residents of Ekpoma, Esan West local government area.

He said kidnapping was being seriously and strategically addressed, saying security operations were ongoing across the state.

Governor Okpebholo noted that security matters were sensitive and not suitable for public debate.

He said premature disclosures could undermine operational effectiveness.

Declaring his respect for the constitutional right of citizens to protest, Okpebholo warned against attempts by unscrupulous individuals or groups to exploit public sentiments to destabilize the peace and security of the state.

According to him, “This administration will not allow criminals or their sponsors to take Edo State hostage. Anyone involved in kidnapping, cultism, or any form of criminality will be tracked down and brought to justice. There will be no hiding place for perpetrators.”

Okpebholo urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, as well as continue with their normal daily activities.

He said he remained determined to win the battle against crime and restore lasting peace across Edo State.

  • Police arrest three over murder of lawyer in Abuja

Police arrest three over murder of lawyer in Abuja

    • …recovers several weapons

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command on Sunday disclosed that three notorious armed robbery suspects involved in the murder of a legal practitioner, Chigbo Nwamaka Mediatrix have been arrested.

The suspects are; Saifullahi Yusuf (Male, 22 years) – from Kaduna State, resident at Dan-Tata Community, Dei-Dei, Abuja, Ishau Yusuf (Male, 24 years) – from Kaduna State, resident at Dan-Tata Community, Dei-Dei, Abuja, and Minka’ilu Jibril, also known as Dan-Hajia, from Kaduna State.

The police said the first and second suspects are biological brothers.

Recall, Mediatrix Chigbo was killed last week by, according to the police, ‘one chance’ operators.

Contrary to the police, her family members said she was murdered by kidnappers.

Her lifeless body was discovered by the roadside along the Kubwa expressway, Abuja.

On how the suspects were arrested, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh said, “The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its sustained fight against violent crime with the arrest of three notorious armed robbery suspects involved in “one-chance” criminal operations and the gruesome murder of a legal practitioner, Barrister Chigbo Princess Nwamaka Mediatrix.

“The arrest followed clear directives issued by the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye, PSC, to ensure that all perpetrators connected to the heinous murder of the victim and other similar crimes within the FCT are swiftly identified and brought to justice.

“Between 5th and 10th January, 2026, operatives of the Command’s Scorpion Squad, led by ACP Victor Ogbeide Godfrey, acting on reconstructive digital intelligence, tracked the victim’s mobile phone and conducted follow-up operations at Dei-Dei, Dakwa, and Dan-Tata communities within Kubwa Area of the FCT.

“These intelligence-led operations led to the arrest of the following suspects:

    1. Saifullahi Yusuf (Male, 22 years) – from Kaduna State, resident at Dan-Tata Community, Dei-Dei, Abuja.

    2. Ishau Yusuf (Male, 24 years) – from Kaduna State, resident at Dan-Tata Community, Dei-Dei, Abuja.

    3. Minka’ilu Jibril, also known as Dan-Haji-from, Kaduna State.”

Preliminary investigation, Adeh said, revealed that the suspects are members of a notorious “one-chance” armed robbery syndicate that has been operating on and off within the FCT for several years, particularly during festive periods.

She said, “Further investigations revealed that on 5th January, 2026, at about 5:50 p.m., Barr. Princess Chigbo unknowingly boarded their black Volkswagen Golf 3 vehicle along the Kubwa Expressway, unaware that the occupants were criminals. Upon entry into the vehicle, the suspects wound up the tinted windows and threatened the victim with weapons in an attempt to force her to pay ransom for her own release. When she allegedly refused to cooperate, she was physically assaulted and pushed out of the moving vehicle along the Kubwa Expressway, resulting in her death.”

The police said the suspects further admitted to dispossessing the victim of her Android mobile phone, which was later sold at Dei-Dei for the sum of One Hundred and Twenty Thousand Naira (₦120,000).

“From which: Minka’ilu Jibril received ₦30,000, Saifullahi Yusuf received ₦15,000, Ishau Yusuf and another suspect currently at large, Musa, shared the remaining amount,” she added.

During the arrest, the police said, five scissors, two sharp dagger knives, two knives, one long chain used for restraining victims, and One plier where recovered from the suspects.

The police said, “These items are believed to have been used in the commission of their criminal activities.

Investigation is ongoing, and intensive efforts are in top gear to apprehend the remaining suspect currently at large, as well as to uncover any additional criminal networks linked to the syndicate.

“The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Miller Dantawaye, PSC, commends the professionalism and dedication of the operatives involved and reassures residents of the FCT that the Command remains resolute in its commitment to rid the Territory of criminal elements. Members of the public are once again advised to remain vigilant, avoid boarding unregistered or suspicious vehicles, and promptly report any suspicious activities through the Command’s emergency numbers: 08032003913, 07057337653.”

Adeh said more updates will be communicated as the investigations progress.

  • Oyetola urges states to invest in fibre boats to end wooden craft accidents

Oyetola urges states to invest in fibre boats to end wooden craft accidents

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy,  Adegboyega Oyetola, has renewed his call on state governments across the federation to urgently ban the use of wooden boats for commercial water transportation and invest in safer, modern fibre and aluminium boats.

Oyetola made the call against the backdrop of recent tragic boat accidents, which claimed several lives and left many families in mourning. He expressed deep sympathy with the victims of the mishaps and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased.

The Minister also charged waterway users to take personal responsibility for their safety by adhering strictly to basic safety measures.

He warned against night travel, which often comes with poor visibility and higher risks, and urged passengers to insist on wearing approved life jackets at all times.

“Waterway users must refuse to board rickety or overloaded boats,” he cautioned. “No journey is worth risking your life. Avoid night travels, wear life jackets, and prioritise safety above all else.

Our thoughts and prayers, he said, “are with the families who lost their loved ones. These recurring tragedies are painful and unacceptable, and they underscore the urgent need to address the root causes of waterway accidents in the country,” he said.

According to the Minister, the continued reliance on rickety boats in many riverine states and non-adherence to safety standards remain the major contributors to accidents on Nigeria’s inland waterways.

He noted that many of these boats are poorly constructed, inadequately maintained, and prone to structural failure, especially when overloaded or exposed to harsh weather conditions.

Wooden boats, Oyetola pointed out, “deteriorate quickly due to constant exposure to water, leading to cracks, leakages and eventual collapse,” he explained. “They lack stability, are easily capsized, and often have no safety features. In many cases, they are operated without proper regulation or adherence to safety standards, putting passengers’ lives at serious risk.”

The Minister stressed that phasing out wooden boats in favour of fibre-reinforced plastic and aluminium boats would significantly improve safety on the waterways. He highlighted that fibre and aluminium boats are more durable, stable, and resistant to corrosion, making them better suited for commercial operations.

“These modern boats are stronger, more reliable, and easier to maintain,” he said. “They offer better balance and buoyancy, reduce the risk of sudden breakage, and can be fitted with essential safety equipment.”

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to waterway safety, Oyetola disclosed that the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has continued to roll out interventions aimed at reducing accidents. He cited the distribution of 35,000 life jackets by the Ministry to riverine states in 2025 as part of efforts to enhance safety consciousness and preparedness.

“Despite these interventions, we are still witnessing boat mishaps, largely because of the persistent use of unsafe wooden boats,” the Minister noted. “This is why we are appealing to state governments to urgently complement federal efforts by investing in modern, non-wooden boats for commercial operations in their states and provide standard life jackets for all water transport passengers in their domains.”

He emphasised that ensuring safety on Nigeria’s waterways requires collective action and political will at all levels of government.

“Water transportation is a critical component of our blue economy. But it must be safe, regulated, and sustainable. Together, we can put an end to these avoidable tragedies and protect the lives of our citizens,” Oyetola said.

Over 150,000 young Nigerians are vying for 774 placements as the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare begins the final interview stage of the National Health Fellows (NHF) Program 2.0, it emerged on Sunday.

The exercise aims to select one fellow from each of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) from the pool of applicants.

The flagship initiative, coordinated under the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) Office, provides a platform for young Nigerians to observe, learn, and actively participate in ongoing national health sector reforms, building future leaders at the grassroots level.

According to a statement from the Communications Desk of the SWAp Coordination Office on Sunday, the NHF 2.0 program highlights Nigeria’s commitment to equitable, inclusive, and transparent development of health leadership while strengthening governance and service delivery across the country.

It said the selection process has been rigorous and merit-based, combining digital screening and shortlisting before the in-person state-level interviews.

According to the statement, panels in each state include representatives from the World Health Organisation, State Ministries of Health, State Primary Health Care Development Agencies, academia, Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), traditional leaders, and SWAp desk officers.

“This process is part of our nation-building. We commend the extraordinary interest shown by young Nigerians and reaffirm our commitment to fairness, transparency, and excellence.”

“We look forward to meeting and empowering the finest candidates from each LGA, who will help drive the transformation of our health system,” the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, was quoted as saying.

Minister of State for Health, Dr Adekunle Salako, while describing the initiative as a new model of talent discovery and human capital development for the health sector, said, “It is encouraging to see so many young Nigerians rise to the call to serve.

“The integrity of this process will ensure that only the most committed are selected to lead change from the grassroots.”

On her part, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Kachollom Daju, emphasized the program’s role in institutionalizing transparency and excellence within public service recruitment.

“The Fellows we select will not only support health delivery, but they represent the values and future we are building across the entire system,” she said.

The successful candidates, according to the statement, will undergo residential national training in Abuja before being deployed to their LGAs to champion innovation, accountability, and community-driven health interventions.
