JUST IN: IPOB leader Kanu requires heart surgery, says lawyer

Aloy Ejimakor, counsel for Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, on Saturday said his client needed heart surgery for a valve replacement.

He urged the Federal Government to release the detained agitator so he can get medical attention.

Ejimakor tweeted a medical advice from Pink Rose Hospital Limited dated August 23, 2022 stating that Kanu has heart-related issue it described as life-threatening.

“The patient requires urgent surgical (internal heart surgery) intervention for tricuspid valve (heart valve) replacement,” the medical advice reads in part.

Ejimakor said: “For avoidance of any doubt, Nigerian government knew since August 2022 that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu requires surgery.

“Besides the court orders, this is enough to release him or accord him his right to independent medical care. It’s a universal norm.”

Kanu was re-arraigned on January 19 before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He pleaded not guilty to the 15-count terrorism charge filed against him by the Federal Government.

He filed a preliminary objection to the charge, praying the court to strike out or quash them, which the Court of Appeal agreed with.

On the same day, an Umuahia High Court in Abia State awarded N1billion damages to Kanu in a judgment on his fundamental rights suit.

Kanu was accused of making a broadcast “with intent to intimidate the population”, in which he “threatened that people will die, the whole world will standstill”.

He was also accused of issuing “a deadly threat” that anyone who flouted his sit-at-home order should write his/her Will, which resulted in a lockdown of the Southeast.

Kanu also professed himself to be a member and leader of IPOB, a proscribed organisation in Nigeria, contrary to and punishable under Section 16 of the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act, 2013.

He was said to have incited members of the public “to hunt and kill Nigerian security personnel and their families”.

The Federal Government said Kanu directed IPOB members “to manufacture bombs” and to “destroy public facilities”.

He also allegedly threatened the public not to come out on May 31, 2021, and directed them “to destroy public transport system in Lagos, resulting in major economic loss to the government”.

The prosecution said he “imported into Nigeria and kept in Ubullisiuzor in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State…a radio transmitter known as Tram SOL concealed in a container of used household items which you declared as used household items”.

The alleged offence, the prosecution said, is punishable under Section 1(2)(b) of the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act. 2013.

Kanu has been in the custody of the DSS since his rendition from Kenya.

“I urge every one of us to remain hopeful because the birth of Christ heralds good tidings to all mankind,” he said.

Yohanna urged Christians to use the period to pray for the 2023 general elections and ask God to give Nigeria leaders after His own heart.

“Let us trust God in our prayers to aspire for a better nation and a better future for us and for the next generation to work to change the current narrative and status quo in our nation’s polity.”

  • 2023 election not do-or-die affair, says CAN

2023 election not do-or-die affair, says CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged politicians not to view the 2023 general election as a do-or-die affair.

It also called on Nigerians to vote God-fearing people.

CAN, in a statement by its president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said: “Another season of Christmas is here again.

“It is that time of the year when Christians all over the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the living Son of God.

“As people who believe in Him, we are reminded of the unfailing and never-ending love of God for us.

“The story of Christmas tells us of God’s loving intervention in the human situation of helplessness and hopelessness.

“Our political leaders, especially those jostling for the opportunity to lead our country out of the woods in 2023, should use this Christmas season to reflect on the words of the new-born Messiah who, when it was time to inaugurate His rescue mission in the world, expressed the consciousness that He was anointed to preach the good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, let the oppressed go free, and proclaim the year of the Lords favour (Lk 4:18-19).

“They should be prepared to ensure justice by insisting that the resources and positions in governance are shared equitably among people of all regions and tribes.

“Equitable distribution of positions will help us to harness the abundance of potentials in our dear country for national development.

“As we gear up to elect new sets of leaders at both the federal and state levels in the first quarter of 2023, Christmas is a reminder that God has not forsaken us.

“Therefore, we should pray to God to open our eyes to be able to discern and vote for those who will govern the nation with godly fear and devotion.

“Let those contesting for elective positions realise that the forthcoming election is not a do-or-die affair; rather, it is God who gives power to whoever he pleases.

“They should eschew violent conduct and toe the path of honour and peace as they campaign for votes.”

CAN urged citizens to make their votes count.

“We should not allow fear of insecurity and violence cause us to stay away from voting during the 2023 general election.

“Let us remember that the spirit we have received from God through the coming of Christ into the world is not of fear but of power, and of love, and of sound mind (2 Tim 1:7).

“Religious and political leaders as well as the media should use this Christmas season to reinforce the hope of the masses in a better, more peaceful and secure Nigeria come 2023.

“Jesus is the promised Messiah, who fulfils God’s promise of eternal salvation and deliverance for His people at a time when they were neglected, exploited and oppressed by selfish and corrupt leaders (Isaiah 11:6-10).

“It is in this context that the significance and importance of the birth of Christ radiates brilliantly for us, as a people and a nation, because we are expecting the coming of a new leadership ordained by God to restore the fortunes of our country and ensure peace, justice and righteousness in the land.

“This year, we are celebrating Christmas in Nigeria amidst uncertainty, fear, untold suffering, hardship and pain in the face of a harsh economy, record inflation figures, worsening poverty situation and a weakened security system due to bad governance.

“This precarious situation in our national life can be likened to the sufferings, helplessness and hopelessness of the Israelites as a result of the decisions of their leaders to forsake God and pursue after their bellies which they have made into gods through greed, selfishness and blatant corruption.

“Nevertheless, the message of Christmas informs us that God will not abandon us, rather, He will continue to intervene in the affairs of mankind through Jesus Christ, the Messiah He sent to save the world.

“We should resist the temptation to speak the language of despair and division over our lives and our nation. Let the story of Christmas provide us with inspiration to speak the language of peace to our neighbours regardless of differences in religion, ethnicity or political leanings.

“Let the Yuletide season be a period of strengthening ourselves and others; reminding one another that there is no difficult situation that the presence of Jesus cannot address; giving hope to the hopeless; comforting the oppressed and being the voice of the voiceless.

“The prophecies of the birth of our Lord assures us His enduring presence which delivers from all troubles and will surely restore the dignity and joy of our dear country, Nigeria.”

  • How Sleeping With A Buckwheat Pillow Benefits Your Health

How Sleeping With A Buckwheat Pillow Benefits Your Health

The health benefits of quality sleep are unquestionable. Getting adequate sleep improves your mood, enhances your immunity, and helps you manage weight. In addition, a good night’s rest is also a stress reliever.

As such, it’s essential to learn some measures to improve your sleep quality. One of them is investing in a buckwheat pillow. Not only does it enhance your sleep, but it also unlocks numerous health benefits. You can get a variety of buckwheat pillows online and offline from different stores. The trick is to ensure the store sells quality products. For example, PineTales is known for selling a selection of high-quality handmade buckwheat pillows.

This article describes what a buckwheat pillow is and includes detailed discussions on some of its health benefits. Stick around if you want to know more.

    What Is A Buckwheat Pillow?

A buckwheat pillow is made from natural buckwheat hulls. This natural material ensures that the pillow is both springy and firm. In addition, this ensures your head and neck are adequately supported while you sleep.\

Buckwheat, also referred to as sobakawa, is a natural plant grown in Japan and other Asian countries. It produces seeds enclosed in husks, the hardened outer casing. These are edible and have been used as food by humans and domestic animals for years. However, the hulls can’t be consumed and are used to stuff pillows and mattresses. Once the seeds mature, they’re harvested, and the husks are cleaned and processed.

Later, the processed hulls are enclosed in a material casing, with the most preferred casings being cotton and silk. The husks are durable and can go for several years before needing replacement. Nevertheless, you can ask the manufacturer to sell you the husks in bulk so you can replenish your supply whenever necessary.

What Are The Health Benefits Of Sleeping With A Buckwheat Pillow?

Here are some of the ways a Buckwheat Pillow can benefit your health:

    • Buckwheat Pillows Are Hypoallergenic, Reducing Your Risk Of Allergic Reactions

These pillows are popular for their hypoallergenic properties, exemplified by the ease with which they allow air to flow. This makes it difficult for mites and other insects to inhabit them.

When you’re allergic to something and get exposed to it, you may develop inflammation in your skin or body. This might manifest in the form of skin redness, acne, or dry patches. Fortunately, one of the benefits of hypoallergenic products, like buckwheat pillows, is inflammation prevention.

Nonetheless, some people may develop an allergic reaction to buckwheat pillows, especially if they have a history of plant allergies. Therefore, it’s advisable to consult a professional before using the product if you’re among this population.

Cleaning pillowcases frequently, whether or not you’re using a buckwheat pillow, is also recommended to minimize allergic reactions. The recommended method is the delicate wash cycle using cold water. This is because hot water damages the fabric’s quality. It’s also vital to use mild detergents or alternatives like white vinegar and baking soda to prevent the absorption of chemicals into your pillow.

However, while doing so, avoid soaking the buckwheat husks in water to maintain their firmness and durability. Instead, remove them from the casings and air-dry them before returning them. It’s also advisable to have extra covers that you can use for your buckwheat pillows while cleaning the dirty ones.

    • Buckwheat Pillows Provide Support ToThe Neck And Back, Minimizing Pain

The human body wasn’t designed to sleep on soft material. That explains why our ancestors used wooden blocks as neck and back support or slept on the ground. The buckwheat pillow borrows from this concept.

Buckwheat hulls are used to make the pillow firm yet comfortable to offer the necessary support. Here’s a video that illustrates better how solid a buckwheat pillow is and the support it offers compared to other types of pillows:

Proper support helps keep your head aligned, reducing neck and back pain. It also promotes good posture, which is essential for spine health. In addition, it enhances blood flow and improves the health of your nerves, blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, and muscles. This greatly reduces back- and neck-related pain, resulting in better sleep.

You can also use buckwheat pillows to support your back as you work. Their breathability also ensures that your back doesn’t feel too hot, regardless of how long you use it. However, it’s advisable to supplement them with regular breaks to stretch your muscles.

    • Buckwheat Pillows Alleviate Snoring

Snoring entails air passing through congested passages resulting in the vibration of nearby tissues. In some instances, snoring signifies a condition called obstructive sleep apnea, which poses a myriad of health risks. For example, it can increase an individual’s risk of dying early by 40%.

One health condition that’s linked to sleep apnea is heart disease. Research findings show that it increases the risk of cardiovascular issues, such as coronary artery disease and high blood pressure. Consequently, this puts you at risk of suffering a heart attack.

Additionally, snoring can cause headaches that can range from mild to severe. Recent studies have identified a connection between sleep apnea and morning headaches among some snorers. Furthermore, snoring keeps you from sleeping adequately because it wakes you, preventing you from enjoying deep restorative sleep. This may result in depression, obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Thankfully, investing in a buckwheat pillow is a great way to prevent such instances. This is because it helps you achieve good posture while sleeping, clearing your airways and, thus, minimizing snoring.

    • Buckwheat Pillows Promote Healthy Weight Management

Healthy weight management is another benefit of buckwheat pillows. Research shows that poor sleep quality results in the release of hormones that impact one’s eating habits, increasing their appetite. This may increase the risk of developing obesity along with other health complications, like cardiovascular issues and diabetes.

On the contrary, better sleep enables an individual to manage their weight. Some benefits of maintaining a healthy weight include lower blood pressure, improved insulin resistance, minimized risk of cardiovascular problems, and minimal pain and inflammation.

For starters, poor spine alignment can be resolved through proper sitting and sleeping posture. In addition, the buckwheat pillows offer head, neck, and back support, promoting good spine health. Consequently, all this contributes to better alignment and reduced migraines.

Additionally, allergies can cause migraines when the trigeminal nerve found in the nose is irritated. Luckily, buckwheat pillows are hypoallergenic and, thus, are highly unlikely to cause migraines resulting from allergies.

Furthermore, buckwheat pillows are breathable and support proper sleeping posture, reducing the obstruction of airways, which translates into migraine relief.

More notably, purchasing extra buckwheat husks when buying your pillows is economical and enhances their longevity. This is because you can discard the old hulls when they no longer serve you and add new ones without spending anything.

    • Flexibility

Buckwheat pillows are flexible and moldable because of the hulls used to fill them. This feature benefits your health by alleviating back and neck pain and headaches as you can adjust them for utmost comfort. You can also customize them according to your sleeping position. For instance, a thinner buckwheat pillow will work best for you if you sleep on your stomach or back. This may mean removing husks or maintaining them at a certain level. • Affordability

Buckwheat pillows are more durable than regular ones. Therefore, while the cost of purchasing them is on the higher side, you don’t have to buy them as frequently. Nevertheless, it’s vital to buy from reliable manufacturers to ensure the pillows’ durability.

Tips To Help You Buy A Quality Buckwheat Pillow

When buying a buckwheat pillow, it’s crucial to consider a few tips to avoid getting a knock-off.  The following hacks will come in handy when you invest in these high-quality pillows:

    • Do Your Research

Research is vital when making any investment, especially one that may influence your health. Some experts disagree about some of the advertised benefits of buckwheat pillows. As such, thorough research and fact-checking will help you make an informed decision before purchasing.  Additionally, it enables you to cut back on costs because you can check the prices of buckwheat pillows in various locations and pick the most affordable option.

Another aspect to research is the location the buckwheat husks were sourced from, cleaned, and processed. You want the cleaning process to be thorough such that any dust, debris, or mold is eliminated.

Some manufacturers treat imported buckwheat husks with fumigants, which may affect the complete removal of harvest debris. Others keen on hygiene air clean their buckwheat pillows to completely remove unwanted elements. Again, thorough research will ensure you get the best products in the market.

    • Check The Fabric

It’s vital for the fabric to be durable to minimize the potential of buckwheat husks poking through the cover. Additionally, a high-quality buckwheat pillow should be soft and moldable to provide comfort.

    • Check For A Zipper OnThe Pillow

While buckwheat pillows are already designed for comfort, you can enhance them by adding or removing husks. However, this can only work if your pillows have zippers.

In addition, your buckwheat pillow casing needs to be cleaned to get rid of dirt and improve your health. Nonetheless, soaking buckwheat husks negatively affects their durability, preventing you from enjoying their health benefits in the long term. As such, you need to remove the hulls before cleaning your pillows to avoid damaging their quality. To do this, they need to have zippers. However, for better aesthetics, you can go for those with invisible ones.

    • Ensure The Cover Of The Buckwheat Pillow Is Heavy-Duty

Buckwheat pillows are quite heavy. Their size is two to three times larger than that of regular pillows. Thus, they need to have a cover that can hold husks adequately to prevent tearing. A heavy-duty casing can accomplish this and prevent your pillow from bursting open and spilling all the husks on your bed. Remember to inspect the stitching on the cover before purchasing it to verify durability.

So, remember these four tips the next time you’re shopping for a buckwheat pillow.

    Final Remarks

The health benefits of quality sleep are unquestionable, so it’s important to learn how to improve its quality. One way to do that is by investing in a buckwheat pillow, which promises reduced allergic reactions, increased back and neck support, reduced snoring, healthy weight management, and fewer migraine episodes. Other benefits of buckwheat pillows that promote the said health benefits are durability, flexibility, and affordability.

Nonetheless, such advantages are dependent on the quality of the buckwheat pillow you purchase. Some tips to help with your purchase include proper research, checking the pillow’s fabric and zipper, and ensuring its cover is heavy-duty. So, if you’re looking to upgrade your bedding, a buckwheat pillow is a worthy investment that betters your sleep and improves your health.

  • “Ways to have a Good December and a Better January”

“Ways to have a Good December and a Better January”

If there’s one thing Nigerians are known for, it’s our ability to turn up when the occasion calls for
it, especially during the festive period. We spend days leading to Christmas going from one
concert to another, wedding parties, and all sort. The spending is endless and there’s no shame
in that. We spent the year working one job with three side hustles and now is the time to show
ourselves that we’re chopping life, and not life chopping us.

While this is great, the number one problem is that there is life after December and the 99 days
of January is no joke. Nobody can give the other person urgent 2k since we’re all broke and
    waiting on our salaries.

But January doesn’t have to be so dry or so scary if you make the right plans this December.
Here are 3 tips to make sure that you enjoy December and flex in January:

    1. Make a budget.
Budgets suck. We all want to be the rich aunt or uncle who spends lavishly but you also
don’t want to be the friend whom everyone avoids their calls because they know you’re
about to ask for money and they don’t have the guts to tell you ‘no’. Setting your budget
is cutting your coat according to your cloth. You spend what you plan on spending, and
once you’re done, you head home.
    2. Regulate Outside Activities
Outside is expensive. If you’re going to stick with your budget you have to choose which
events to attend and which not to. Àṣàkẹ́’s concert is cool. The only problem is you have
to choose between the concert ticket and groceries come January. If you’re at that stage
of building your finances, inviting friends to a good house party may prove a smart
      decision in the long run.
