Mega Transformers ordered by the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari’s Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) have successfully undergone factory acceptance test at Siemens’ transformers factory in Trento Italy.

First batch of the transformers are expected to start arriving Nigeria in September 2022.

The Minister of Power Engr Abubakar Aliyu, made this known through a statement that his Special Adviser on Media Malam Isa Sunusi issued at the weekend.

The statement noted the factory acceptance test paves the way for Siemens Energy to start delivering the transformers to Nigeria.

According to him, this came after Aliyu lead a delegation to Germany in April where he paid visits to Siemens Energy factories in Berlin and Frankfurt, and held meetings with the senior leadership of Siemens Energy on the need to fast-track the delivery of the early orders that will kick start the transformation of Nigeria’s electricity.

In 2018 President Muhammadu Buhari initiated the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) that will enable Siemens Energy to upgrade Nigeria’s electricity systems.

The first phase of the PPI seeks to modernise, rehabilitate and expand the national grid by investing in the electricity value chain, including generation, transmission and distribution systems.

  • Preseason: Jesus hits hattrick as Arsenal hammer Sevilla 6-0

Preseason: Jesus hits hattrick as Arsenal hammer Sevilla 6-0

Gabriel Jesus marked his first Arsenal home game with a hat-trick as the Gunners ended pre-season with a 6-0 thrashing of Sevilla to lift the Emirates Cup.

Four quickfire goals put the Gunners in cruise control within the first 19 minutes of the game, with Bukayo Saka and Jesus grabbing two each.

The £45m signing had to wait until 12 minutes from time to complete his hat-trick, flicking home a loose ball as Sevilla tried to defend a corner. A late sixth came when Gabriel Martinelli teed up Eddie Nketiah for a tap-in following a quick counter-attack.

The result means Mikel Arteta’s side have maintained their 100 per cent record in friendlies played in front of crowds this pre-season, ahead of their Premier League opener against Crystal Palace next week, live on Sky Sports’ Friday Night Football.

Arsenal paid tribute to former Gunners and Sevilla forward Jose Antonio Reyes – who passed away three years ago – in this final friendly and it was during their ninth-minute applause for the Spaniard that they got the opener.

Martin Odegaard clipped in Saka to the right of the penalty area and the England international was felled by Karim Rekik for a clear penalty. Saka converted the spot-kick, suggesting his role as Arsenal’s first-choice penalty taker after Alexandre Lacazette’s departure is now cemented.

Three minutes later, it was two. Ben White’s crossfield pass found Jesus on the left touchline. The £45m signing fed Granit Xhaka in the area before racing onto the midfielder’s cleared cross to tap home for his first Emirates Stadium goal.

Xhaka had another role in Jesus’ second goal, playing a quick free-kick to Gabriel Martinelli down the left. The winger found his first-name namesake in the box to tap home another finish on the stretch, with the Brazilian completely unmarked.

And worse Sevilla defending brought about Arsenal’s fourth. Goalkeeper Bono panicked under pressure from Arsenal’s front three and played the ball straight to Saka who tucked in a finish with his weaker right foot.

The Gunners could have made it more before half-time, with Martinelli, Xhaka and Thomas Partey spurning clear cut chances. At the other end, defenders William Saliba and Oleksandr Zinchenko – making their home debuts for Arsenal – were relatively untroubled.

After the break, Odegaard went close a couple of times – while Xhaka hit the roof of the net. But the celebrations belonged to Jesus as he rounded off the victory by finishing first-time from close range as the Spanish side couldn’t clear their lines from a set piece.

With Sevilla trying to claim a consolation strike, Arsenal hit their opponents for a sixth. Xhaka released Martinelli on the counter attack, with the Brazilian unselfishly teeing up Nketiah for the simplest of finishes.

  • LASSIP, path to revolutionalise school sports in Nigeria — LSSC

LASSIP, path to revolutionalise school sports in Nigeria — LSSC

The Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Sola Aiyepeku, on Saturday described the newly-launched Lagos State School Sports Intervention Programme (LASSIP) as path to revolutionalise school sports in the state and the country in general.

Aiyepeku in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said that the scheme was neccessary to develop sports from the grassroots.

“I can say that if we truly want sports at the grassroots in Nigeria which should start from Lagos, then, school sports under the LASSIP initiative is definitely the answer.

“The project is part of the visions and unprecedented investments of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu in young Lagosians to provide them with more options now made possible under the LASSIP initiative, right step in the right direction.

“LASSIP will not only revolutionalise sports in Lagos but also see that our young ones are exposed to the new in-thing in sports development in the world.

“We are all happy to see the feat of Tobi Amusan who recently broke the world record. So, LASSIP did not just come as an accident, it is a deliberate plan to have sports as part of the curriculum in our public schools,” he said.

Aiyepeku said that the initiative would first run as a pilot programme where the school game masters would be trained on the expectations of the programme.

“We have earlier trained about 600 Physical Education teachers, and for the first scheme, we will train another 450 teachers so as to inculcate the agenda of the programme.

“Sports have gone beyond what we think; I could recall that as a child I was beaten for playing football because all what my parents wanted from me was studying.

“Now, I am a graduate of Chemical Engineering, but I eventually did not practice along my discipline, but stick to sports, only God knows what I would have become if I had been allowed to follow my passion.

“Sports have gone beyond playing on the field, as we know, sports now have many aspects that might be of interest to our children such as sports administration, medicine, therapy and physiology, marketing among others,” he said.

Aiyepeku said that the statewide training programme was first of its kind in Nigeria and that the fundamental plans to achieve the full potential of LASSIP had been put in place.

“We have designed a training module which will be field and classroom based and game masters are the resources we need to deploy these training in schools.

“Because the modules are based on the latest advances in school sports, it is imperative that we train game masters so that they can effectively deploy this training to students in schools.

“This is why our partnership with the Ministry of Education is very important. Our directorate of school sports will work directly with the ministry and so far, we are extremely excited to have the ministry on board as partners.

“The ministry completely understands the potential impact of this programme and are doing all it can as valuable partner,” he said.

NAN reports that the newly launched LASSIP is a wide-reaching intervention programme designed by LSSC in partnership with the Ministry of Sports to reintegrate sports to the Lagos State school curriculum.

The programme is part of a broad vision to leverage sports to promote physical fitness and wellness, offer alternative career paths to young people and create a sustainable pipeline of talent discovery and development.

The programme was launched on Friday with over 600 game masters and Physical Education teachers in attendance.
