El-Rufai vows to sack KASU lecturers over ASUU strike

Kaduna Governor Malam Nasir El-Rufai has sworn to sack any lecturer of the Kaduna State University (KASU), who partakes in the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

He said any lecturer who fails to resume as directed by the management of the University.

The Governor, who stated this in a live media chat with Hausa Radio stations on Wednesday night, said, he was only waiting for report from the Acting Vice Chancellor and will not hesitate to sack any indicted lecturer.

He argued: “ASUU had a problem with the Federal Government, not the State Government. I see no reason why lecturers of Kaduna State University will be on strike since we are paying them appropriately, if this continues, we have no option than to sack all of them.

“The Acting Vice Chancellor has assured me that they will resume, but I have asked them to find out if they actually resumed work, because I initially instructed that their salary be stopped. But I was later told they didn’t join the strike, so I asked that it should be investigated and those that collected salary and joined the strike will be asked to refund the salary.

“This is because Nigeria’s law says ‘no work, no pay’. This is the law. So whoever joined the strike will not be paid a salary. We have been telling the KASU lecturers that they have no problem with the State government. ASUU’s problem is with the Federal Government. Therefore, why will our staff who have no problems with us join the strike?

“If this continues, I will wake up one day to sack them all, I swear to God. We will sack them all and declare their positions vacant on the pages of newspapers. They once did the same thing and we gave them warning, now they repeated it.

“I’m only waiting to receive the report from the Commissioner for Education. I swear to God, we will sack all those that joined the strike if they refuse to resume work.

Anambra market to sanction traders without PVCs

Traders at Ogbaru Relief (Main) market, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State have been directed to get registered in the ongoing Continuous Voters’ Registration (CVR) exercise slated to end on July 31.

Chairman of the market, Chief David Obidike, who gave the charge on Thursday warned that those who did not get theirs at the expiration date would be sanctioned.

He said market leadership has attracted officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the market, wondering what would still deprive some traders from getting registered.

According to him: “We will soon embark on ‘operation show your PVC’, in the market because your power to elect the candidates of your choice is the PVC.

“Go and get it now because Sunday is the last day for procuring it unless INEC will extend the time. Already, here in the market Secretariat, I brought the INEC officials and the exercise is on going.

“Eligible people are trooping in on daily basis to get registered, so why can’t you have your right to vote your choice.

“You will recall that Ogbaru market was among the 32 flawed markets in the State because the removed executive members connieved with the then Commissioner of Trade, Markets and Wealth Creation among others, to conduct flawed election.

“So let us avoid repeat of what happened in our market in this Nigerian general election, a stitch in time saves nine.

“If not for the intervention of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, through his Commissioner for Trade and Industry, Hon. Obinna Ngonadi, by now crises in the markets in the State would have caused bloodbath because of flawed election and overstay of members of caretaker committees who vowed to continue to be in the markets at the detriment of the majority of the traders.

“Governor Soludo is our saviour otherwise we would have remained in fear of the unknown as we have no say then. But today, since I came on board about a month now, nobody has reported any case of theft or burglary. Security is assured even if our market is surrounded by flash points.

  • WHO releases new guidelines for CAB-LA as PrEP for HIV

WHO releases new guidelines for CAB-LA as PrEP for HIV

World Health Organisation (WHO) has released new guidelines for the use of long-acting cabotegravir (CAB-LA) as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV.

Director of WHO’s Global HIV, Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Infections Programmes, Meg Doherty, called for countries to consider CAB-LA safe during the release of the new guidelines at a press conference on Thursday.

CAB-LA is an intramuscular injectable, long-acting form of PrEP, with the first 2 injections administered 4 weeks apart, followed thereafter by an injection every 8 weeks.

CAB-LA was shown to be safe and highly effective among cisgender women, cisgender men who have sex with men, and transgender women who have sex with men in 2 randomised controlled trials, HPTN 083 and HPTN 084.

At the briefing ahead of the 24th international AIDS conference (AIDS 2022) holding in Montréal, Canada, Doherty noted CAB-LA is highly effective prevention option for people at substantial risk of HIV infection.

She explained the guidelines will support countries as they plan for CAB-LA introduction and facilitate urgently needed operational research.

Consistent with previous WHO guidelines, the new CAB-LA guidelines are based on a public health approach that considers effectiveness, acceptability, feasibility and resource needs across a variety of settings.

The guidelines are designed to facilitate CAB-LA delivery and the operational research which is urgently needed to address implementation and safety issues.

These will inform decisions on how to successfully provide and scale up CAB-LA.

The guidelines highlight critical research gaps, including issues relating to HIV drug resistance, HIV testing, service delivery models, resource requirements, safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and provision of CAB-LA in geographies and for populations not included in the trials.

The guidelines also note that young people and key populations often experience challenges in accessing current PrEP services.

Doherty urged communities to be involved in developing and delivering HIV prevention services that are effective, acceptable and support choice.

President of AIDS 2022 host, the International AIDS Society (IAS), Prof Adeeba Kamarulzaman noted: “Long-acting PrEP could play a major role in ending the HIV pandemic, but right now, very few people can get it.”

The International Co-Chair of AIDS 2022 said: “Scaling up affordable access to this game-changing prevention tool must be a top global priority.”

Also at the briefing, researchers presented new data confirming that CAB-LA is safe and effective for PrEP in trans and cisgender women, ViiV Healthcare and the Medicines Patent Pool announced that they have signed a voluntary licensing agreement for patents relating to CAB-LA for PrEP.

WHO, Unitaid, UNAIDS and The Global Fund announced the launch of a global coalition to accelerate access to long-acting PrEP with AVAC as the secretariat.
