Fuel price hike: Civil servants seek salary increase

Following the increase in the pump price of petrol, some federal and state civil servants have appealed to both governments to increase workers salaries to reduce their hardships.

The workers, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in separate interviews on Friday in Katsina, said the appeal was necessary because prices of goods and transportation had also skyrocketed.

Malam Abdullahi Balarabe, a Federal Government worker in Katsina, said that following the hike in fuel price, prices of goods had also doubled.

Balarabe said what he normally bought for N200 was now being sold for between N300 and N400, adding that this was constituting a serious challenge to low earning civil servants.

“As you know, despite the increase in the pump price of fuel and the increase in the prices of foodstuffs and other goods, our salaries have remained the same.

“Before the current increase in prices, the salaries of many of us could not even sustain us to the next salary day. Some of us spend our salaries on payment of credits,” he said.

Mr Edwin Michael, also a federal civil servant, said that he had to park his vehicle to walk to office because some of the fuel stations sold petrol for more than N184 a litre.

“We are appealing to the Federal Government to do everything possible to increase workers salaries to cover the deficit in our monthly take-home.

“If I now go to the market with my salary I don’t think it will be enough for me to buy what I used to buy before the current increase in the prices of goods,“ he said.

Also, Malam Adamu Ibrahim, a state civil servant, said that the situation was beyond description, adding that only God could intervene.

He said that his salary as an office assistant could hardly sustain him for the month.

Ibrahim also called on the state government to increase the salaries of its workers, especially those at the lower grades.

A visit by NAN to the Katsina Central Market showed that traders had increased the prices of foodstuffs and other goods.

Malam Isma’il Garba, one of the traders, said the increase in the prices of goods was due to a hike in transport fare.

NAN reports that a litre of fuel now sells for between N184 and N220 in petrol stations in the state. (NAN)

  • Doctors’ exodus undermining healthcare delivery

    Doctors’ exodus undermining healthcare delivery

The Katsina State Government has decried the increasing migration of medical doctors and healthcare practitioners from government hospitals in search of greener pastures as disturbing.

Commissioner for Health, Engineer Yakubu Danja stated this at the commissioning ceremony of the Late Hajiya Mariya Masari 24-bed comprehensive female ward, donated by Alhaji Salisu Mamman Continental, at General Hospital, Katsina.

He identified the high rate of disengagement of doctors from hospitals and other healthcare centres as the major challenge affecting quality healthcare services available for residents.

Danja also stated the Hospital Systems Management Board (HSMB) is faced with difficulties of attracting and retaining the health workforce in the system.

It attributed it to poor remunerations, adding there has been a decline in the number of doctors by almost half between 2020 and 2022 in the system.

According to him: “The number of consultants and medical officers in 2020 were 219, and have gradually reduced to 112 in 2022 coupled with insufficient number of other skilled health workforce to cope with the increasing demand for healthcare services in the State.

‘’Other reasons for the dwindling number of doctors include: security challenges in some LGAs that have secondary facilities resulting in staff seeking for employment elsewhere if they cannot get posted to other facilities, brain drain to NGOs and other organizations that have better remuneration packages than the state government.”

He advocated Residency Training Programmes, replacement and special incentives for the health workers as some of the ways to address the challenges facing the hospitals in the State.

Governor Aminu Bello Masari while commissioning ward thanked Alhaji Salisu Mamman for appreciating the effort of the state government in the health sector and constructing the edifice to benefit the masses.

NAPTIP deepens partnership with actors over use of technology in crime elimination

The National Agency for Prohibition of Traffick in persons (NAPTIP) in collaboration with partners, said it had deepened its commitment to end cases of child labour, abuse and trafficking for sexual exploitation in the state.

The Head of the agency in the state, Mrs Bertha Offor, disclosed this on Saturday at the 2022 edition of World Day Against Human Trafficking.

Offor revealed that the event was commemorated every July 30 and the theme for the year was “the use and abuse of technology”.

She said that the agency was collaborating with Facebook to track perpetrators of such crime.

According to her, technology had helped in the fight against human trafficking and should be encouraged to better the society.

“Perpetrators used this medium to track their victims through recruitments, sexual exploitation and other evil crimes.

“So we say, no to human trafficking, child labour, and abuse in the state,” Offor said.

She, however, solicited for collaboration of the media to ensure optimal result in the fight, through sensitisation to prevent it from the grassroots.

The Attorney General of the state, Barr. Cletus Ofoke said laws, policies and enabling environment were put in place to encourage actors on issues of Gender-Based Violence and human trafficking.

Ofoke, also Chairman of Taskforce on Human Trafficking in the state, was represented by Barr. Faithvin Nwanchor, State Coordinator, Gender Based Volence (GBV) Taskforce, maintained that perpetrators of this and human traffickers must be brought to book.

Laurette Nwafor, State Coordinator, Network Against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labour in the state, maintained that through network approach, the aim would be achieved.

Nwafor added that the strategy would also ensure the menace was eradicated in the society.

“We are networking with CSOs working with human trafficking issues.

”We have offices almost in all the cimmunities of the state.

“We have vanguards, community champions and volunteers at the grassroots,” Nwafor said. (NAN)

Insecurity: Enenche, Peter Obi, worshippers pray for Nigeria

The Presidential flag-bearer of Labour Party, Peter Obi and other dignitaries on Friday night joined other worshippers as Dr Paul Enenche, Senior Pastor, Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Abuja led the congregation to pray for peace and security of the country.

Thousands of worshippers had thronged the church for its Mid-Year Praise and Worship Night, to seek the face of God over the state of security and other challenges facing the country.

Enenche, while praying for the nation, said that Nigeria was at war with the forces of hell and prayer was a potent weapon to defeat them.

Reading from the book of Numbers 10:9-10, he prayed for the rebirth of the nation and a new Nigeria and prayed that the nation would not go down.

The pastor urged Christians to continue to pray for the peace of the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the church auditorium known as ‘Glory Sanctuary’ over 100,000 capacity was filled to the brim.

The church programme, which is a special praise and worship night tagged, “Judgmental Praise” drew gospel music ministers from across Nigeria and beyond.

Among the gospel artists that attended include Nathaniel Bassey, Chioma Jesus, Buchi, Frank Edward, Mercy Chinwo, Owie Abutu, Dusin Oyekan and many in-house music ministers.

Enenche and his family also ministered in songs as well as the Lords Trumpeter.

The major highlight of the programme was intermittent prayer for the nation and praise and worship to God.

Notable among personalities in attendance are Gov. Emmanuel Udom of Akwa Ibom, Wife of Delta Governor, Mrs Edith Okowa and the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara.

A South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Thami Mseleku amongst others.

NAN observed that the church maintained a security system that carried out thorough checks on both vehicles and pedestrians entering the premises.

There were layers of security checks from the gate while the main entrance of the auditorium have two baggage scanners where all bags were screened.

Some worshippers who spoke with NAN alluded their decision to come for the night event to their belief that God is the ultimate protector of man.

A worshipper, Mr Mike Johnson, said he did not expect people to turn out for the church programme because of the fear of insecurity in FCT in recent times.

He said he refused to give in to fear and believed that no evil could triumph in the presence of God.

”Yes there is tension in the city and many people are afraid but the children of God should not be afraid of evil because fear is the greatest enemy of man,” he said.

Another congregant, Mrs Comfort Onjeh, said that she never at any point entertain such fear of insecurity while planning to attend the programme.

Onjeh urged Christians to pray more instead of being afraid of what the enemies of the country were doing.

She urged the government and the security agencies to do their best in addressing the situation so that citizens could feel safe and move freely.

Team Nigeria kits delivered, says Sports ministry

The Ministry of Youths and Sports has clarified that about 300 kits have been delivered to Nigerian athletes competing in the Commonwealth Games.

The kits, it said, were issued to almost all the athletes over two weeks ago.

A statement by the ministry said the delivered kits include track suits, house wears, sneakers, face caps, back packs, trolley bags, shorts, and ceremonial wears.

It said: “Team Nigeria athletes have since been donning them in Birmingham as was evident at Thursday night’s opening ceremony and other team functions.

“However, the competition kits for each federation differ. Each federation produces specific competition kits for its athletes.

“The Ministry is aware that federations have their own arrangements with different manufacturers with different delivery times and expectations which is being monitored very closely.

“We hope this clarification helps to put the matter in perspective so that all distractions to Team Nigeria athletes and officials are avoided.”

No stratification of Northern Christians or Muslims in APC – Keyamo

The Minister of State for Labour and Productivity Festus Keyamo has said the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) does not have an official stratification of Northern Christians or Muslims in the party.

Keyamo stated this while reacting to trending media reports that Northern Christian members within the party had rejected the party’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket for the 2023 election.

He said: “I am not aware that the Northern Christians within the APC family met anywhere to appoint spokespersons on their behalf.”

Keyamo noted that no member of the party is authorised to speak on behalf of every adherent of a particular faith within a party.

“They will vote according to their individual conscience. Nobody has the authority to speak on behalf of every adherent of a particular faith within a party.

“Also and with the greatest respect, I am not aware that we have an official stratification of APC Northern Christians or Muslims in our great party.

“They are all APC members, simpliciter, and they registered as such into the party, not on the platforms of their different faiths,” Keyamo said.

  • Sanwo-Olu pledges support for 15th Headies Awards

Sanwo-Olu pledges support for 15th Headies Awards

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has pledged support for the 15th Headies Awards.

Sanwo-Olu, in an interview with HipTv, revealed the State is excited about working with the prestigious music award.

The Governor was full of positive remarks for the platform which recognises and celebrates African music stars.
According to the Governor, the Headies Awards which will hold at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in Atlanta, Georgia, United States on September 4, would see ‘the state on ground to first sell Nigeria as a country then Lagos as a music capital and entertainment capital of our country.’

He noted as far as Lagos State is concerned, the awards show is viewed ‘as an exportation of our creative industry and also also our own foreign direct investment in America’.
Speaking about the awards show, Sanwo-Olu said: “Headies has been the rallying point, the crème de la crème. The high point of music awards, not only in Nigeria but I think in Africa.

“It has earned its credibility. Headies is a name that has stayed in the industry, that all industry players always aspire to be a winner.

“The fact that you were there last year, you’ll also want to try and won it again the other year.
“And for me being a watcher of all that, it has really grown in depth, size and acceptability.”
On the intended collaboration, he stated: “So indeed, we are very excited. In the entertainment industry, Headies stands out and that’s why we feel very proud to be working with them.

“Lagos is the center piece for music, not only in Nigeria but in Africa. Now we want to be a global player in the world stage, there’s no better place to go in America than Atlanta where talents are being discovered.

“As a governor, we are very excited with that initiative and we are buying into it fully. We will be supporting them.
“We will also be on ground to first sell Nigeria as a country. We’ll sell Lagos as a music capital and entertainment capital of our country. And also use that to connect with our huge disapora audience in America. So, it’ll be a win-win for everyone.

“It’ll be a win for Lagos State government, for Headies and also for our international audience. They will be able to see, feel, touch and appreciate all of our musicians at the highest level.
“For us as a government, we see it as an exportation of our creative industry. This is also our own foreign direct investment in America.
“So, we are reversing it. We are exporting talents, knowledge and skills.”
