A statement by the OPM on Wednesday said the handle does not belong to Chinyere, who the church is not a politician.

The church expressed concerns that with the spread of the church and the philanthropic activities of its founder, the impersonators behind the handle may use it to defraud unsuspecting followers across the world.

    Five recyclable waste materials

The world is characterized by the growth and production of materials, which we use in carrying out daily activities. The frequency of which production occurs makes recycling a very important factor in maintaining a stable working environment. There are many materials that shouldn’t be discarded after use because recycling them can reduce the production costs of new ones.

    To avoid running out of resources, it is needful to make prudent use of available materials by keeping them for recycling purposes. Materials that can be recycled include the following;

    * Tire: The rubber powder recycled from the scrap tires are wildly used in the industries. It is mainly used as modified asphalt for highway construction and it is one of the biggest consumption markets for rubber granula. There are more volume of applications for the rubber, steel and fibre derived from recycling tyre which makes tyre recycling an attractive opportunity for the recycling industry.

    * Plastic: There are many plastic materials in our homes, which we discard when not in use. It is better to keep these for recycling purposes. The systems are capable of processing a wide range of plastic materials with varying levels of contamination including extremely heavy contamination such as oil-based substances and agricultural waste and converting them into something new.

*Cardboard: The first step in recycling cardboard is to separate it from other paper such as office paper and newspaper. The cardboard is then baled and sent to a mill, shredded into small pieces, and put in a pulping machine to introduce water/chemicals and break down the cardboard into fibers. Over half of the cardboard collected is used to make new cardboard boxes, and additional cardboard can be downcycled into cereal boxes and shoe boxes.

*Steel: Steel can be infinitely recycled because it is such a widely used material, the range of possible uses for it are endless. It can be found in an incredibly diverse variety of products from train tracks and cars to bicycle frames and paperclips and of course new food and drinks cans.

*Glass: Glass is 100% recyclable and can be recycled endlessly without loss in quality or purity. Glass is a very important inorganic material which is one of the largest productions of industries. It can be made into a variety of different products used for man’s daily living.

As humans, we should be able to differentiate between recyclable and non-recyclable waste so that we will be able to utilise resources properly and help the continuous production process.

Accept defeat in good faith, observers tell Oni, others

A coalition of Observers that monitored the just concluded governorship election in Ekiti has asked the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate Segun Oni and other candidates to accept defeat in good faith.

The coalition specifically appealed to Oni who had threatened to challenge the outcome of the poll, to embrace the winner and All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Biodun Oyebanji in the overall interest of peace and development.

A communique in Ado Ekiti, the state capital on Tuesday by the leader of the Coalition, Com. Victor Kalu, adjudged the election free, fair and credible, noting that the exercise adhered strictly to the best international practices.

While commending the security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission for their exceptional display of neutrality and professionalism during the election, Kalu said the duo performed their jobs without fear or favour.

Kalu said: “We, the accredited civil society election observers for the just concluded Ekiti Governorship election, therefore, adjudge the election to be free, fair, credible, and transparent.

“The exercise met the required international standard for a credible democratic election. The result should therefore be accepted by all as a true reflection of the will of Ekiti people.

“Since INEC had announced a clear winner, the rest of the candidates should see themselves as co-winners and toe the path of peace by congratulating the clear winner for the good and progress of the state”.

Saluting the INEC and security agencies for displaying professionalism, Kalu said: “We observed during monitoring that the security agencies and INEC were duty conscious and performed their jobs dispassionately without fear or favour.

“They indeed saw the election duty as a national assignment and acted accordingly.

“To improve our electoral process, INEC and political parties and other stakeholders especially the civil society groups should engage in civil voter education and mobilisation before election and encourage impressive voter participation during elections”.

  • NITDA’ a code of practice will tackle fake news, hate speech – NADIR

NITDA’ a code of practice will tackle fake news, hate speech – NADIR

The Network of Advocates for Digital Reporting (NADIR) has lauded the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) for drafting a ‘Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Internet Intermediaries’.

At a briefing in Kano, the group said the code will not only strengthen press freedom and maintain the dignity of information but will also curtail fake news and hate speech before and during the 2023 elections.

The Coordinator, Dahiru Mohammed Lawal, noted the online space needed to be made comfortable for everyone to address issues that cause panic in society and infringe on laws.

“This wouldn’t have come at a better time than in the wake of the 2023 general elections when information disorder and illegal contents will have a field day; when businesses are going digital without paying necessary dues; when indiscretion in online activities is high.

“An unregulated online space remains a recipe for civil unrest. The need for an instrument that ensures our unity is not exploited for pecuniary gains, while guaranteeing freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution, is incumbent on all patriotic citizens.

“Behaviours that increase tension along ethnic biases, interreligious incitements, blasphemy and even secessionist tendencies that threaten security and lead to violence and wanton attacks thrive in an unregulated media space,” he said.

Lawal pointed out that while the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) regulates broadcast stations, the Nigerian Press Council (NPC) ensures the maintenance of the highest ethical professional standards in the print media.

“Why should the online platforms, especially social media, be free from the regulatory scrutiny?”, the coordinator asked, explaining hat other countries have taken stricter measures to curtail excesses on online platforms.

NADIR recalled that on June 16, Meta (Facebook), Google, Twitter and Microsoft agreed to take a tougher line against disinformation, deep fakes and fake accounts, under an updated European Union (EU) Code of Practice or face hefty fines.

Lawal said more than 30 signatories including advertising bodies have signed up for the updated code on disinformation as disclosed by the European Commission.

“Even the United States Government – the self-righteous custodians of free speech – has announced that it was establishing an interagency task force to fight harassment and abuse online.”

On the socio-economic benefits of the code of practice, Lawal said with the digital space contributing about 18% to Nigeria’s GDP, compelling big techs to abide by local laws and pay the requisite tax would increase government revenue.

“Regulations will promote more local content, create jobs and breed more corporate and law-abiding citizens who are mindful of our collective sensitivities and unity.

“While NITDA has clarified that the code is a draft and subject to inputs, we urge stakeholders to contribute appropriately in order to achieve a mutually accepted code of regulations without recourse to the fear of tackling freedom of speech”, he added.

Last Friday, Shina Peller announced his defection from APC, which he accused of lacking democratic tenets.
