  • Why blame the poor?

    Why blame the poor?

Vote commercialisation is the result of a strategic programme by politicians to inject poverty in the electorate at every point in time leaving them with no other option than to sell their votes to the highest bidder on the day of election. Why do you think that most government programmes don’t always alleviate, but always elevate the problems of the poor? When politicians openly sloganeer “Dibo ko sebe”, you should capture the pun in the fun.

Don’t let us deceive ourselves by thinking that any censure of the hawkers can achieve any constructive dissuasion– at least, not for now. Vote buying and vote hawking have formed a synergic partnership in our political culture because the buyers know that there will always be sellers on election day since the sellers are creations of their “penurious programmes”.

On the other hand, the sellers know that there will always be buyers on election day because that is the only day and avenue they can profiteer the desperation of the vote buyers . It is good to sermonize to both the buyer and the seller on the destructive tendency of such heinous practice on our political system but will they change? When a voter sells his/her vote for as low as 3000 Naira, does that not show the irredeemability of his poverty ?

After engaging a vote seller in a 2-hour homily on the implication of his action to the future of his children, and, at the end of the preachment, you couldn’t console him with just 2000 Naira for “wasting” his time, when he gets to the polling booth and finds a vote buyer who is ready to solve his immediate need with 3000 naira, he will not only sell the vote, he will even complement the sale with elaborate display of gratitude to the buyer.

Let’s be realistic, as much as we desire idealism, it will be elusive for as long as we all indulge in sophism that discounances realism. As elite, our self-righteousness is responsible for our incessant pontifications and the unjustified contempt we have for the poor. Yes, we can laugh at a man selling his vote. Yes, we can condemn him for even selling it for as low as 3000 naira. We can mock his poverty. We can deride his condition. But who are the people responsible for his sorry state: the rulers. Who are these rulers? The politicians. Who are the politicians? The elite. Who are the elite? You and I. When you mock a man who sells his vote so that he can “sebe”(cook), you should know that we, the so-called elite, have failed the crowd thronging in the paradise of hell. Why are we lambasting the weak for selling their votes when most of us are friends to those buying the votes? Who should we talk to?

Let us even concede without admitting that we should talk to both. Where should we start from? Is it not pharisaical to start from the poor with intemperate desires and exploitable vulnerability? We meet and see our friends regularly. They are the ones tempting the poor. They are the ones buying the votes. So, why can’t we start from there? Simple: we do not want to offend our friends or put our relationship with them in jeopardy because there is every possibility that we are going to be beneficiaries of the “purchased electoral victory”.

We will gallivant the streets as “friends to the governor”. We will submit CVs for political appointments. We will lobby for contracts. We will flaunt our closeness to the governor on our various What’s app groups. We will become couriers of phoney proposals. This is the truth. But what do we want from the poor? Nothing.

The poor have nothing to offer us. Therefore, we can lambast them. We can chastise them. We can talk to them anyhow. Until those of us who call ourselves elite stop our puritanical crusade against the poor, the much vaunted idealism will eternally elude us. The poor are not the problem of this country, it is the elite. So, halt this persecutorial flagellation of the innocent and face your wicked friends that are in power. Let us stop this cheap scapegoatism of the poor. They have suffered enough.

ICIR hosts media sustainability conference at 10

As part of its 10th anniversary, the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), an independent nonprofit media organisation that promotes transparency, accountability, and good governance through investigative reporting, will hold a conference on media sustainability on Wednesday, June 22 at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

A statement by Managing Editor of ICIR, Ajibola Amzat, explained the issue of financial viability and sustainability is one that media organisations around the world grapple with daily.

This challenge, ICIR believes, is exacerbated by the erosion of advertising revenues through the rise of technology platforms such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, and several others, leaving the media business in a fragile condition.
“In the last two years, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the misfortunes of global media enterprise in ways never imagined before. But while the Western media, to a large extent, seems to have found winning formulae to do business profitably, the media in the Global South, particularly countries in Africa, is still struggling to stay afloat,” he explained.

Also speaking on the planned conference, the Executive Director and Founder of the ICIR, Dayo Aiyetan, observed that “the time is now to have a conversation on the future of the media in Africa, particularly its viability and profitability. Many news organisations are not profitable because of dwindling sales and ad revenue; many media companies cannot pay salaries and are laying off staff. The media in Nigeria is hemorrhaging,” he said. Aiyetan, one of the nation’s top journalists, adds that media industry leaders must discuss how to find profitable ways of running media businesses.

A keynote address on Sustainability Imperatives for African Media would be delivered by Tshepo Mahloele, Chairperson of Arena Holdings, one of Africa’s largest English newspaper publishers in South Africa.

Mahloele is also an entrepreneur who holds major investments in many projects in South Africa and other countries.

Firm introduces Coolbox technology to Lagos butchers, others

A Nigerian firm, Anthorad Nigeria Ltd in partnership with the International Finance Corporation, at the weekend unveiled a new Coolbox technology for meat retailers and other perishable commodity sellers in Lagos State.

At the unveiling of the technology in Ode-Eran meat market in Igando area of Lagos Stat, Managing Director of Anthorad Nigeria Ltd, Engr. Adegboyega Samson Adeosun, said the new product will help meat, fish and fruit retailers to keep their product fresh and hygienic for consumers.

“As the day wears on, fruits, fish and meat can sell at less than half of their original value, slashing profits for retailers but with this new coolbox technology, the products can stay fresh throughout the day.

“This is food meant for human consumption that we typically lose along the supply chain. The mission really is to reduce food spoilage due to lack of cold food storage at key points along the food supply chain.”

According to Adeosun, the Coolbox, which comes in different sizes from Columbia and India, will not only help to make the meat stay fresh but also protect them from germs.

“The big dream for us is to solve the problem of food spoilage in Nigeria, and expand our technology and service to other states in the country that have these challenges,” he said.

Kazeem described the product as a welcome development for butchers and meat retailers in the State, adding that investment in the facility has enormous benefits to the butchers, people and government.

“This will help put a stop to open and unhygienic movement of meat as meat that passes through such a process is still largely exposed to flies and similar elements in the open markets, where they could be contaminated,” he stated.

He expressed his group’s readiness to adopt the new technology in ensuring healthy red meat consumption.

“As meat sellers, we are ready to adopt any technology to ensure sanitary and hygienic red meat butchering, transport and sales, they will be beneficial to all and sundry as we will now have healthy meat on our plates,” Kazeem said.

Treasurer of Association of Corporate Meat Processor and Retailers, Lagos (ACMPro), Adejimi Azeez, described Coolbox as an innovative product, but pointed out that it should be affordable.

While also contributing on how to improve the system, Azeez stated some perceived challenges with the use of the box.
