‘North West contributed highest votes to Tinubu’s victory’

Spokesman of North West All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council, Muhammad Shehu Molash has said the zone contributed the highest votes to the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president-elect.

Briefing reporters in Kaduna, Molash noted that North West produced the cumulative votes of 2,950,393 out of the 8,794,726 votes scored in the entire county for Tinubu.

He said the votes represented about 33.55% of the entire votes in favour of the President-elect.

He added that all governorship candidates in the zone should be accorded similar support during the forthcoming election.

“The North West APC Presidential campaign council under the able leadership of the zonal Coodinator, Governor Bello Matawalle and his deputy, Salihu Lukman wishes to express their most profound gratitude to all those who contributed immensely towards the success of the APC in the just concluded 2023 Presidential elections.

“That the North West zone gave the cumulative votes of 2,950,393 out of the 8,794,726 votes casted in  the entire county for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Kashim Shettima,is a vindication of our earlier convictions, that the North West geo-political zone is the strongest stronghold of the APC in Nigeria. For the records, 2,950,393 votes represents about 33.55% of the entire votes casted in favour of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Vice,Kashim Shettima in the whole of Nigeria.

“The massive votes recorded, despite the hurdles and conspiracies within and outside the zone,is a clear testament to the mass appeal that the greatest politician of our time, enjoys in the zone!

We equally wish to specially acknowledge the tenacity and doggedness of the 6 APC governors, despite the stiff attempt to whip up ethnic sentiments by some supposedly elders from the zone.Thankfully, the zone rejected the antics of these “Atiku’s elders” masquerading as Northern elders!

“In the light of the foregoing, the North West APC Presidential campaign office, wishes to appeal to all the people of the zone to come out en masse and vote for all APC gubernatorial candidates in the zone,on the 11th of March 2023 in sha Allah.

“The APC in the zone, parades the best out of all the gubernatorial candidates of other parties. Unarguably, Senator Uba Sani is the best out of all those angling to succeed Gov El-Rufai in Kaduna State, given his track records in the Nigeria’s senate; Dr Nasiru Gawuna remains the most qualified person to succeed Gov Ganduje given his experience and humility; Dr Dikko Radda is also adjudged to be far better in all ramifications than the barely literate Lado Dan Marke of the PDP; Gov Bello Matawalle’s ability to navigate through the age-long banditry in the state, points to his suitability for a second term in office,as the state also bids farewell to farmer-herders conflicts, courtesy of Gov Matawalle’s peace initiative.

“It is also the same standard in the other North West States such as Sokoto,Kebbi and Jigawa. Let us also consolidate on Asiwaju/Shettima’s victory by electing all APC’s candidates in the gubernatorial and state assembly elections come MARCH 11TH 2023 in sha Allah”.

EPL: Man City see off Newcastle, reduce gap

Phil Foden’s superb solo goal helped Manchester City see off Newcastle and ensured the defending champions kept up the pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Foden struck after 15 minutes, gliding in from the right and holding off two challenges before seeing his shot deflected home off Sven Botman.

Newcastle responded well and were causing plenty of problems until City substitute Bernardo Silva slotted home to put the game out of their reach midway through the second half.

The win means City move to within two points of the Gunners, who play Bournemouth later on Saturday, while Newcastle remain fifth, four points behind Tottenham.

This was not the result that Magpies boss Eddie Howe wanted as his side looked to bounce back from last weekend’s Carabao Cup final defeat, but there were plenty of positives for him in defeat.

His side were on top when Haaland set up Silva to make it 2-0 from the edge of the area, with Joelinton going close and substitute Alexander Isak denied by an onrushing Ederson.

Isak was particularly impressive whenever he was on the ball and his return to fitness will be a big boost for Newcastle, who have now won only one of their past eight league games, as they look to rescue their stalling season. BBC

We’ll address proven cases of infractions, INEC assures

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured all proven cases of infractions from last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly election will be redressed in line with the provisions of the law.

Its chairman Prof Mahood Yakubu also said that any staff of the commission, whether regular or adhoc found to have compromised the last exercise will not be allowed to participate in the Governorship and Assembly elections.

He directed that disciplinary action be initiated against such staff immediately.

Speaking at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners, the INEC boss said the commission has received reports from the State offices as well as complaints and petitions from political parties and candidates.

He said: “Where infractions of any kind are proven, there will be redress. I must add that any action taken by the Commission is without prejudice to the rights of parties and candidates to seek further remedy as provided by law”.

According to him: “As we we approach the Governorship and State Assembly elections, we must work harder to overcome the challenges experienced in the last election. Nothing else will be acceptable to Nigerians.

“All staff found to be negligent, whether they are regular or ad hoc officials, including Collation and Returning Officers, must not be involved in forthcoming elections. RECs must also immediately initiate disciplinary action where prima facie evidence of wrongdoing has been established.”

Speaking on logistics which became a problem in some States, he blamed the delay in deployment of staff on the centralisation of the exercise in some areas.

According to him: “Election Day logistics must be finalised days before the election and handled by the Electoral Officers (EOs) at Local Government level. This has been our standard practice. Centralising the process as was done in some States resulted in delayed deployment of personnel and materials and late commencement of polls.

“RECs will be held responsible for any tardy arrangement or the failure to deploy electric power generators to collation centres or polling units where such facilities are needed. The Commission has enough facilities in all the States of the Federation. Failure to deploy them is simply inexcusable.

“Refresher training must be conducted for ad hoc staff that participated in the last election. Where they are replaced for good reason, they must be properly trained so that processes are not delayed or compromised at any stage.”

On technology for the election, he said: “the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will once again be deployed for voter accreditation and result management. The deployment of BVAS has gone a long way to sanitise voter accreditation as can be seen from the result of recent elections.

“Since last week, the Commission has intensified the review of the technology to ensure that glitches experienced, particularly with the upload of results are rectified. We are confident that going forward the system will run optimally”.

Akeredolu urges FG to implement Supreme Court judgment on cash swap

Ondo Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has urged the Federal Government to immediately implement the Supreme Court judgment on the Cental Bank’s Naira policy.

He maintained that the monetary policy hurriedly packaged by Central Bank of Nigeris(CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele to achieve a pernicious end had unleashed hardship on people.

Noting that the verdict has brought relief, he threatened to go to court against any government that may want to block the implementation.

Akeredolu said:” As we enjoin the officials of the Federal Government who may be directly involved in putting into effect the spirit and the letter of the Supreme Court ruling to do so immediately, the Ondo State Government will not hesitate to proceed against persons and institutions whose activities impede its ability to discharge statutory obligations to the people.”

The governor,  in a statement, saluted the industry and courage of the Justices of the Supreme Court for the well-considered ruling.

He lamented the CBN Governor and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice had misadvised the President to assume powers of an emperor answerable only to himself and no other authorities as enshrined in the law.

Akeredolu said:”It is deplorable to witness small businesses collapse with unbelievable rapidity. We have been regaled with tales of the dehumanisation of ordinary Nigerians who have been forced to strip themselves naked in banking halls weeping to be given their monies kept with the banks.

“Some have lost their lives, needlessly, for being unable to access their deposits in the banks upon demand. The Governor of the CBN acted most irresponsibly when he claimed to be exercising powers, which the CBN Act does not invest in his office.

“He was quoted as saying that he was fighting corruption, money laundering and vote- buying. He acted, ultra vires, goaded by his political permutations.

“The AGF equally misled the President to act beyond the limits of his executive powers. Nigerians have been punished unduly. As the Supreme Court has pronounced, the law must be allowed to rule. There are statutory functions allotted to bodies in the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

“These bodies must be allowed to exercise those functions. Anyone purporting to act in contravention of the extant laws does so, either ignorantly or mischievously. The letters of the law are simple and understandable if the people in authority embrace less mischief.”

The governor urged the Federal Government to obey the ruling, saying there is no other alternative open to it.

He congratulated the states that challenged the obnoxious policy implementation,  expressing hope that banks will release the deposits of Nigerians in their custody upon demand.

Akeredolu warned that there will be grave consequences for continued seizure of the hard-earned monies of citizens.

He added:”There is no gain asserting the obvious. The whole policy may have been well conceived. Its implementation has been politically driven.

“The CBN Governor is a partisan of injustice and oppression. Most Governments, perhaps with the exception of a negligible few motivated by the possibility of deriving unexpressed political advantages,  cannot meet simple obligations to their citizens. It is most unfortunate.

“There is no justification for the pains to which our people have been subjected for obvious political reasons.”

A Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) has congratulated the President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for winning last Saturday’s poll.

The group stated that Tinubu’s victory at the poll did not come to it as a surprise because  it was a product of hard work, vision and sacrifice he pioneered over 30 years ago.

The ARG, in a congratulatory message by its Ekiti State Publicity Secretary, Prince Michael Ogungbemi, noted that Tinubu’s unquestionable pan Nigerian stand gave him an edge in the contest.

The group expressed confidence his reign would return Nigeria to the surest path of greatness, economic prosperity and radical turnaround in all spheres of human life.

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory was well deserved. He is a visioner and progressive politician that will take Nigeria to the promised land.

“We have no iota of doubt that a great unifier and detribalised personality like Asiwaju will strengthen our bond of unity as a nation . He is one politician that can operate seamlessly under our diverse ethnic and religious inclinations. His victory is one that will benefit Nigeria,” it added.

The group, however, warned politicians against engaging in unproductive acts capable of stoking the fire of crisis in any of the six Southwesteen states after the the election.

It posited the Yoruba people  will unapologetically rise up, to defend the region from being mindlessly exposed to unnecessary conflagration by desperate politicians, who are under illusion that Nigeria presidency is their birthright.

The group added that Lagos State as a strategic and treasured Yoruba territory has yet to fully recover from the large scale devastatio, it suffered during the EndSARS protests that almost grounded the state to a halt.

“Very disturbing was the fact that when Lagos was burning, other regions where protests ever took place enjoyed relative peace. The protesters and their masked sponsors ostensibly had an invidous plan to wreck havoc on Lagos, the “brain box” of Southwest economy before proceeding to the other parts of Yorubaland like Oshogbo, Akure, Ekiti and others.

“Their sinister intention is to make Southwest a battlefield. This will not be tolerated. ARG, is saying without any equivocation that no settlers in Yoruba territory, no matter how highly placed would be allowed to destroy our heritage when their own fatherland is at peace.

“It is in view of the foregoing therefore, that ARG, is calling on people of Yoruba extraction to rise up and never falter in their commitment to defend their treasured heritage,” it added.

  • Onoh begs Igbos in Lagos to re-elect Sanwo-Olu

Onoh begs Igbos in Lagos to re-elect Sanwo-Olu

The South East Presidential campaign spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Dr. Josef Onoh has pleaded with Igbos residing in Lagos to re-elect Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on March 11

Onoh, in a statement, said that Sanwo-Olu has shown affection and support for the Igbos in Lagos in the past four years and deserves reciprocation from well-meaning Igbos who are good tenants and have over the years shown fidelity in project Lagos State.

He said: “I recall how he helped former super Eagles captain, Henry Nwosu, who was at the point of death and couldn’t get any assistance even from our Igbo brothers, Sanwo-Olu took over Nwosu’s treatment just three hours after being notified, flew him from a hospital in Asaba to LUTH Lagos and went further to build a house for him,” Onoh recalled.

Onoh asked Ndigbo in Lagos to disregard the misleading statements made by a faction of Ohanaeze Ndigbo against the Governor and the Oba of Lagos, noting that his late father, HE Chief C.C Onoh, was one of the major founding fathers of Ohaneze Ndigbo which he remarked is today more political than a socio-cultural organization subjected to divisiveness.

He said: “Lagosians and the Yorubas have been immensely kind to the Igbos. Many famous streets are named after our sons and daughters in lagos but we cannot find as many streets named after a Yoruba man in the south east.

Read Also : Tinubu, Sanwo Olu ‘to get huge’ votes

“They have given us a sense of belonging and accommodated our excesses even when we make proclamation that irritates the Yoruba that Lagos is no man’s land, which comes for the most part from my Igbo brothers and sisters, yet In all of these conglomeration of ethnic groups, it is ultimately true that Lagos still remains the centre of cultural melting point where there is high level of ethnic tolerance and great opportunities for the Igbos.”

Onoh stated that irrespective of whatever position one has taken, there are some facts that are sacrosanct and should be linearly preserved.

He noted: “The Yorubas could have their faults, still they have remained Igbo partners in progress even before the Nigeria independence and supported well meaning Igbos in most of their political journeys.

“In 1959 same Yorubas supported my late father to become the first black chairman of the Nigeria coal Corporation with the support of Pa Anthony Enahoro despite Nnamdi Azikwe’s resistance. Till his death, he shared a rare brotherly bond with Akinwole Michael Omoboriowo then Deputy Governor of Ondo State, stood by Abiola, remained committed to NADECO and was one amongst few that were prisoners of conscience during the military onslaught on Nadeco members.

“My father shared great friendship bonds with many Yoruba sons and daughters till death. Dim. Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu spoke Yoruba fluently, Lagos was his home and in his lifetime I always heard him speak worthy of many Yoruba sons and daughters. These are qualities we should currently seek as Igbos and foster unity, peace and love amongst our Yoruba brothers. “

He said that ethnic tolerance and or intolerance in Lagos politics and even daily living amongst the Igbos and Yorubas is such that requires a lot of repetition about how Nigeria is a nation that must always strive for national integration and embrace ethnic tolerance in order to promote unity.

He decried that it is yet still a problem in Lagos state that during elections, ethnic affiliation would increases as political parties strategically position themselves in a bid to gain the upper hand even if it means causing ethnic divide in order to maintain relevance.

“At this point, it is worthy of note that Lagos is that state that gives voice to other ethnic groups in political affairs in Nigeria. It is not done in other states in Nigeria. Ethnic politics and political intolerance always manifest in Political party formation in Nigeria and promoted by the selfish.

“The above successes were made possible because Lagos and Yorubas accommodate people from all spheres of influence which is a major ingredient in fostering national unity. Politics is about interest and not sentiments, it’s only wise that Ndigbo in lagos support Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s re-election because the devil you know is better than the Angel you don’t know.

“Your greatest interest is your businesses in lagos hence it’s wise to vote continuity, don’t be your own executioner and if you fail you carry your cross alone and be assured that your fellow Igbo brother will be the first to laugh at you and non of the presidential candidates that lost the election will speak on your behalf, their families are abroad, they will not lift a finger to stand up for you if you commit political suicide out of sentiments, let’s think interest first,” Onoh advised.

He said that in his interactions with various Igbo trade unions in lagos state, he was made aware that during the past campaigns, there were promises made but weren’t kept four years after.

But Onoh assured that despite the redeemable setbacks, assured that he will personally lead a deligation to meet with Governor Sanwo-Olu once he’s re-elected into office, to press home the demands for a more conducive business-friendly environment and government precence and support for the Igbos in lagos.

“As brothers, all I ask to make this possible is your support and vote for Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on the 11th of March 2023. If he still doesn’t address these promises that were made, provided they are within reason, although I know he will, I’ll personally drive home your demands to our incoming President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who we all know has so much love and shown great support for Igbos.”
