NASS transmits 35 Constitution alteration bills to Buhari for assent

The Senate on Tuesday directed the Clerk to the National Assembly Sani Magaji Tambuwal to transmit 35 Constitution alteration Bills to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.

The Senate also urged seven States yet to forward their resolutions on the constitution alteration Bills to do so.

However, the alteration Bill which seeks to grant financial autonomy to Local Government Areas in Nigeria was not among the Bills that met the requirement for being assented into law.

These resolutions of the Upper Chamber followed its consideration of a motion titled: “Passage of Constitution (Fifth) Alteration Bills, 2023” sponsored by Chairman, Senate Ad hoc Committee on Review of 1999 Constitution, Senator Ovie Omo- Agege and co-sponsored by 65 other Senators.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Michael Bamidele, presented the motion on behalf of Senator Omo-Agege who was absent during plenary.

Bamidele said the 35 Constitution Alteration Bills have satisfied the provisions of Section 9(2) of the Constitution, for passage into law “having been approved by not less than 24 State Houses of Assembly.”

Inuwa declares Nigeria global IT talent factory

Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) Kashifu Inuwa has declared Nigeria as the most viable Information Technology (IT) investment destination in the world.

Addressing an international audience of tech giants, he said the country ticks all the boxes in terms of size, population, youth demography, government support, legal and regulatory framework.

At the 2023 Digital Life Design (DLD) conference in Munich, Germany, Kashifu predicted that by 2030, there would be a global shortage of 85 million IT professionals, advising the world not to overlook Nigeria.

“The average age in Nigeria is 19; we have a demographic advantage. We will become the global IT talent factory.

“You can live in Nigeria but work for Western companies, the start-ups offering this are already there. India has been leading and we need to do something about that,” the NITDA stated.

Kashifu expressed concerns that Africa is almost ignored because “some people think nothing happens there economically anyway”.

He gave an example of Mo Ibrahim who founded a mobile phone company in Sudan but was advised against it since the people were poor.

The IT expert recalled that after a few years, the British-Sudanese entrepreneur sold Celtel, now active in 13 countries, for 3.4 billion dollars.

“Nigeria has 15 percent of the continent’s 1.4 billion population and a significant percentage of its GDP. Of the seven African unicorns (start-ups) worth more than a billion dollars, five are from Nigeria”, Kashifu said.

Kashifu recently bagged the 2022 Foreign Investment Network (FIN)-Forbes Outstanding Corporate Governance CEO Award, African Information Technology Icon, ISACA Inspirational Leadership Award, and NADIR ICT Personality of the Year.

In 2022, President Muhammadu Buhari conferred the National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) Award on NITDA in recognition of its productivity, hard work and excellence in service delivery.

PSC asks police officers due for retirement to proceed

The Police Service Commission (PSC), has advised all police officers due for retirement to proceed without delay.

Rising from a management meeting on Monday in Abuja, the Commission said the ongoing campaign for the extension of the tenures of some Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs); Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs); Commissioners of Police (CPs) and other senior Police Officers was an: “unnecessary distraction and an affront on all
the existing laws in the country guiding entry and exit in the public service”.

The PSC said there is an institutional succession plan in the Nigeria Police.

A statement on Tuesday by the Head, of Press and Public Relations, PSC, Ikechukwu Ani reads: ” The Police Service Commission, the statutory Government Executive Body with the Constitutional mandate to recruit, promote, dismiss and exercise disciplinary control over persons holding offices in the Nigeria Police Force, except the Inspector General of Police, wishes to assure Nigerians that there can never be any leadership vacuum in the NPF.

“The Commission has watched with keen interest the conversation in the Media on whether retiring senior Police Officers’ tenure should be elongated or not and whether such retirements would affect the 2023 election security.

“The Commission took a decision that it will not extend the tenures of the retiring senior Police Officers, stressing that even when requested, it can not do so as it is against all existing laws, Police Act, Police Service Commission Act, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“It noted that the Police have capable men and women who should be encouraged to step into the vacancies that would be created by the exiting Officers. It assured Nigerians that there is an institutional succession plan in the Nigeria Police Force especially with the current injection of 10,000 Constables and several other thousands of cadet ASPs from the Police Academy every year.

“The Commission assured Nigerians that there will be no vacuum in the hierarchy of the Police with the touted retirement of hundreds of senior Police Officers.
It took a decision to rigidly uphold the provisions of the law which stipulates that a serving public Officer, whether in the Police or in any other Government Agency, must exit the service at the age of 60 or having served for a period of 35 years”.

The Commission said it would not encourage the subversion of the laws guiding entry and exit into the Nigeria Public Service, adding that the retiring senior Police Officers are not indispensable and that their exit would not in any way or manner affect the success of the 2023 general elections.”

‘Customers’ can become ‘husbands’, Doyin replies OAP Nedu

Reality TV star Doyinsola David aka Doyin has argued every ‘customer’ is a potential ‘husband’.

She made the assertion while responding to popular OAP Nedu on his podcast ‘The Honest Bunch’ after the latter claimed most ladies who get on the BBNaija reality TV show do so simply to get customers (referring to men).

He implied they were ‘prostitutes’, insisting have nothing else to offer other than their ‘kpekus’ (v*gina).

But Doyin, focusing on the brighter side of Nedu’s remark, argued customers sometimes end up as husbands.

The medical radiographer said there was absolutely nothing wrong with ladies going on the show simply for that purpose.

My kids broke TVs trying to hug me on screen – Damola Olatunji

Actor Damola Olatunji has shared unforgettable memories with his children when they were toddlers.

He recounted their reactions to seeing him on TV set while he was away filming.

The movie director and producer, who fathers a twin, a boy and a girl, recalled how they broke his television sets on several occasions while trying to hug him after spotting him on the screen.

“Let me give you two scenarios and what happened. There was a time, when they were a bit younger, about three or so; I was off to a location and I was filming.

“They showed me on TV and they saw me; so they rushed to the TV. They actually climbed the shelf and they were pulling the TV and screaming, “Daddy! Daddy!”

“They pulled down the TV from the shelf and spoilt the TV and that happened a couple of times. Anytime they saw me on TV, they wanted to embrace the TV and they ended up bringing down the TV from the rack or wall.

Recounting another indelible occurrence where they watched him shot dead on TV, Olatunji added: “There was another experience, where the character I played in a movie was shot and seeing that my kids started crying.

“It was so terrible that they had to call me from home and had to put it on a video call for them to see that I was okay.

“That was it growing up but now, they understand that we’re shooting movies and they think differently.”
