Fed govt inaugurates committee to train one million Nigerians in digital skills

    • …targets 95% digital literacy by 2030
    • …says programme is privately funded, aligns with Renewed Hope Agenda

The federal government has inaugurated a Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) to plan a National Digital Literacy Conference and oversee the training and certification of one million Nigerians in digital and emerging skills, as part of efforts to attain 95 per cent digital literacy by 2030.

The committee was inaugurated in Abuja on Tuesday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), Office of the SGF, Mr Ibrahim Kana, at the launch of the ClergyWealth Digital Skills Nigeria (SkillUp) Initiative.

Speaking at the event, Kana described the inauguration as “a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s deliberate and strategic commitment to deepening national digital literacy, strengthening human capital development, and promoting inclusive digital transformation in line with national development priorities.”

He said the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Digital Transformation Agenda, the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, and the Renewed Hope Agenda of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Kana stressed that the programme, which is being implemented under the Future Proof Economy (FPE) Model, is fully sponsored and executed by ClergyWealth Cooperative Society Limited, without any financial commitment from the Federal Government.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the ClergyWealth Digital Skills Nigeria (SkillUp) Initiative is one hundred per cent privately sponsored, funded, and implemented by ClergyWealth Cooperative Society Limited. The Federal Government of Nigeria bears no financial obligation, budgetary provision, or funding responsibility in respect of this programme,” he said.

According to him, recent resolutions of the 13th National Council on Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (NCCIDE) provide strong policy backing for the initiative, including the adoption of the FPE Model as the official framework for the National Digital Literacy Framework and the decision to establish a Presidential Digital Literacy Management Structure from March 2026.

“The task before this committee is therefore both national in scope and strategic in importance,” Kana said, noting that the JIC is expected to provide leadership, coordination, and oversight for the planning of the National Digital Literacy Conference, as well as the rollout and delivery of the training and certification of one million Nigerians.

Members of the committee were drawn from the Office of the SGF, the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the Federal Ministry of Education, the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, TETFund, NITDA, states and the Federal Capital Territory, ICT professional bodies, non-governmental organisations, and ClergyWealth.

Outlining the committee’s terms of reference, Kana said it would ensure policy alignment, coordinate stakeholders at federal and state levels, establish monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and guarantee inclusivity, with particular attention to youth, women, underserved communities, and persons with disabilities.

Earlier, the Deputy National Coordinator of ClergyWealth Cooperative Society Limited, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, said the SkillUp Initiative is designed to train one million Nigerian youths for remote work and global technology opportunities through practical digital literacy and internationally recognised certification.

She explained that the programme would go beyond basic digitalisation by offering hands-on training in digital tools, online safety, and digital entrepreneurship, adding that each training batch would last about six months and cover six modules.

“At the end of the Digital Literacy Academy, we would have trained one million youths and equipped them for remote work and global tech opportunities,” Osikoya said, noting that successful participants would sit for international certification examinations and receive personal computers to support their productivity.

She added that the initiative targets clergy, civil society leaders, rural dwellers, and youths across all faiths, while also complementing ClergyWealth’s artisan empowerment schemes, microcredit support, and access to a global job portal.

The committee, chaired by Kana, includes Zainab Abubakar, Ebi, Ifeanyi Okereke, Joe Odoh, Mohammed Tambuwal, Rosemary Osikoya, and Grace Amaefule, among others, as members.

New tax reform implementation won’t lead to tuition fee hike, FG assures students

    • …NANS endorses new tax law, calls off January 14 nationwide protest

The federal government has assured students in tertiary institutions that the tax laws, which took effect last week, will not lead to a hike in tuition.

This is as the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) endorsed the new tax reform law and called off its proposed nationwide protest earlier scheduled for 14th January, 2025, against the implementation of the law.

Chairman, Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform, Taiwo Oyedele, allayed the fears of students at an Expanded National Executive Council (ENEC) meeting and stakeholders’ engagement forum organised by NANS on Tuesday in Abuja.

Oyedele highlighted significant provisions of the tax law that would directly benefit the students and low-income earners in the country.

He added that the law aims to make more money available to state governments for investment in the development of education and infrastructure in the country.

President of NANS, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, used the engagement to announce the suspension of the proposed nationwide protest following the conclusion of the National Assembly’s investigation and clarifications made on the alleged alterations of the tax reform Act.

Oladoja, who read the communique of the Expanded National Executive Council of NANS, held in Abuja in collaboration with all structural student bodies, said the forum provided a platform for tax experts from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to educate student leaders, clarify grey areas, and respond comprehensively to concerns expressed by the Nigerian masses about the new Tax Reform Law.

He explained that the Expanded National Executive Council (ENEC) of NANS was convened against the backdrop of widespread public concerns and national discourse surrounding the newly enacted Tax Reform LAW.

He recalled NANS’ earlier position on the law, following public outcry arising from revelations by some National Assembly members about alleged alterations to the Tax Reform Act, coupled with low public understanding of the Act and its operational guidelines before it was fully passed into law.

“In response, NANS formally called for the immediate suspension of the implementation of the new Tax Law, pending the conclusion of investigations by the National Assembly around the raised allegations and the conduct of comprehensive and targeted public education about the Law to enhance citizens’ understanding and support to ensure the desired results are achieved through this reform.

“This position was accompanied by a 14-day ultimatum, after which NANS proposed to mobilize Nigerian students for mass protest actions across the country should the demands not be addressed.

“Subsequent to this position, the national leadership of NANS was engaged by several government agencies and departments, including but not limited to: the National Assembly; the Department of State Services (DSS); and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS),” he stated.

Oladoja added that after extensive deliberations, presentations, and engagements, the Expanded National Executive Council (ENEC) of NANS resolved that the new Tax Reform Law is a deliberate and well-intentioned law aimed at improving Nigeria’s economy, strengthening institutional frameworks for revenue generation, with deliberate provisions to protect low-income earners and vulnerable citizens.

“Contrary to NANS prior belief, the student body has come to the realisation that the Law does not target the poor; instead, it strengthens social protection while ensuring that higher-income earners contribute more equitably to national revenue, preventing lopsidedness and unnecessary tax burdens on a few,” he said.

Oladoja added that the students were convinced that the Law provides for centralised revenue generation with a clear and transparent sharing formula across the Federal Government, State Governments, and Local Governments.

He said NANS has consequently agreed to serve as ambassadors of public enlightenment, committed to educating Nigerians on the purpose, importance, and benefits of the Tax Reform Law to boost citizens’ confidence and trust in the Federal Government during the implementation of this Law

Lagos Taskforce arrests 32 street urchins over highway nuisance

The Lagos State Taskforce has arrested 32 street urchins, popularly known as ‘Omotaku,’ for allegedly constituting public nuisance and obstructing traffic on major highways across the state.

The suspects were apprehended on Tuesday during a coordinated clean-up and enforcement operation carried out across the Island and Mainland areas of Lagos, following repeated complaints by residents through social media platforms and radio stations.

Areas covered during the operation included Apongbon, Fadeyi, Jibowu, Yaba Phase 1, Lagos Island, Palmgrove, Ojuelegba, and Surulere, among other adjoining roads.

According to the Taskforce, the suspects were caught unlawfully stopping articulated vehicles such as petroleum tankers, trucks, trailers, and private cars, thereby posing serious safety risks to motorists and other road users.

Some of the arrested persons were also found to be smoking substances suspected to be hard drugs and Indian hemp.

Speaking after the operation, the Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, said the agency would not relent in its efforts to ensure safety and orderliness across the state.

He stressed that the Taskforce would continue to comb all parts of Lagos to rid the roads of criminal elements and restore sanity to public spaces.

Akerele added that the operation successfully brought relief to all the areas visited.

The suspects, he said, have been charged in court for offences bordering on public nuisance, illegal road obstruction, and violations of the Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 and the Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.

Dokubo gave the assurance when the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, visited him in his Palace in Degema as part of his ongoing ‘thank you’ visit to Local Government Areas.

Commending Wike for the visit, Dokubo explained that Tinubu stood by him in his time of need, stressing that it is time to return the favour.

He said, “Like you said, my friend, everything that is going to happen, I will be with you in making sure that my friend, the President, succeeds.

Wike had earlier explained that his visit to the community was to thank the people for their support and to let them know why they should support Tinubu in 2027, adding that the visit was also to wish the people a happy new year and thank Dokubo for the warm reception.

Wike said, “I know that traditional rulers don’t play politics. You are my friend, and I felt that there’s no way I would come here, where you reside, and your kingdom without coming to greet you and to say happy New Year.”

Delta police arraign 33 for violent disturbances, public nuisance

    • …urge public to discountenance sensationalism, misleading publication

The Delta State Police Command has clarified the arrests made during security operations conducted on New Year’s Eve in Asaba, the state capital.

According to the Command, several suspects were arrested at different locations across Asaba during the operation for offences including violent disturbances, public nuisance, drug-related activities, and conduct considered likely to breach public peace.

The Command’s spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, said in a statement on Tuesday that after preliminary investigations were concluded, 33 suspects were found to have prima facie cases.

He said the suspects were subsequently charged in court and arraigned before Magistrates’ Court 1, Asaba.

Following their arraignment, three suspects were remanded in custody, while the remaining defendants were granted bail by the court.

Prosecution, Edafe said, is ongoing in line with due process.

He further clarified that, contrary to reports circulating in some media outlets, the individual frequently referenced was not arrested as a church worshipper, nor was the person rearrested in connection with any media engagement.

He said the New Year’s Eve operation was carried out as part of routine efforts to maintain public safety and order during the festive period.

‎The spokesman noted that, contrary to the false narrative being circulated, the individual repeatedly referenced by an online media outlet was not arrested as a church worshipper, nor was he rearrested for any alleged media interaction.

‎Edafe stated: “The suspect in question was arrested alongside two (2) other persons in a Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle, parked in a close street opposite Pinnacle Hotel, Asaba, where they were allegedly purchasing illicit drugs from a suspected drug dealer. The trio was arrested together with the dealer, and incriminating exhibits were recovered at the scene.

“However, considering that one of the suspects is a member of a sister security agency, he was granted bail and released to his institution pending the commencement of arraignment, it being reasonably certain that his attendance in court could be secured through his agency.

‎”It is pertinent to emphasise that the grant of bail does not terminate investigation, nor does it imply innocence on the part of any suspect. Investigation and prosecution remain ongoing, which necessitated the invitation of the suspect to enable the proper commencement of the investigation and possible prosecution.

“The Delta State Police Command, therefore, calls on well-meaning members of the public to discountenance the persistent sensationalism and misinformation being peddled by the online media platform, which are calculated to mislead the public and undermine lawful police operations.”

‎He said the Command remained resolute in its commitment to professionalism, transparency, due process, and the rule of law, and would not be distracted from its constitutional mandate of maintaining public order and safety.

Clerics, labour leaders pray for Adeleke’s re-election ahead of 2026 Osun governorship poll

Clerics from different denominations have offered prayers for the re-election of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, ahead of the August 8, 2026, governorship election during the state government’s Prayer of the Year programme.

The religious leaders cited passages from the Holy Scriptures, commending the governor for what they described as the delivery of good governance and invoking biblical and Quranic verses in support of his second-term bid.

The Chief Imam of Osogboland, Sheikh Musa Animasahun, and the Osun State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Dr John Adeleke, praised the governor’s devotion to God and called for divine intervention to address the challenges facing the state, while also praying for a successful re-election campaign.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, Comrade Abimbola Arapasopo, highlighted the achievements of the Adeleke administration and reaffirmed the labour movement’s commitment to mobilise support for his re-election in the August 2026 poll.

Former governor of the state, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, also endorsed Adeleke for a second term, saying Osun must sustain the current pace of development under the incumbent administration.

“I repeat today that Governor Adeleke deserves re-election. Let us take the message to all corners of Osun State. There is no need to change a medicine that is working for you,” Oyinlola said.

Responding, Governor Adeleke expressed confidence that, with God’s grace and the continued support of the people, his administration would return in victory. “By the special grace of God and by the mass support of our people, we shall assemble here again in January 2027, in victory and gratitude to God and the good people of Osun State,” he said.

“I look back at the previous annual prayer sessions, and I affirm that our good Lord is indeed the ruler of heaven and earth. Our God is our sustainer, our defender, our protector. From the beginning to date, our God fights our battles for us. The universal being rises against those who rise against us. My God, your God, our God engages those who block us. We secured several divine victories in the last three years. We overcame several obstacles and challenges.”

“The divine crushes our enemies; He destroys their evil plots, and we emerge victorious in battles upon battles. As the Lord is of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, as the Lord is ever on the throne, we shall continue to be victorious; we shall continue to overcome; we shall remain undefeated.”

OAU launches probe into death of 18-year-old medical student

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of an 18-year-old 300-level student of the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery.

The student, Timilehin Adetoye Toromade, reportedly died in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

In a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the institution said it received the news of Timilehin’s sudden death with profound shock and deep sorrow.

He disclosed that the student, with matriculation number CLI/2022/133, was believed to have died around 2 a.m., as one of his roommates reportedly said he opened the door for another occupant at that time.

Olarewaju quoted the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, as expressing heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the Visitor, University Council, management, Senate, staff, and students. He described the loss of a young life filled with promise and potential as a tragedy beyond adequate words.

  • NARD rejects political motive claims over renewed strike threat

NARD rejects political motive claims over renewed strike threat

    • …rejects government’s MoU execution claims
    • …seeks evidence of ₦90 billion budget allocation

The National Association of Resident Doctors on Tuesday dismissed claims that its renewed threat of industrial action was politically motivated, insisting the move had become unavoidable after weeks of unmet, shifting government positions, and deteriorating welfare conditions for doctors.

The association also rejected assertions that its Memorandum of Understanding with the government, which led to the suspension of an earlier strike, had been implemented. It maintained that none of the agreed demands had been fulfilled since the signing of the MoU, including the reported ₦90 billion allocation for health workers’ allowances in the 2026 budget.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, alongside other union leaders, said the association’s stance was driven solely by the need to safeguard the welfare and safety of its members, not by partisan considerations.

Suleiman described as illogical any suggestion that resident doctors would align with political actors who lack the authority to resolve their grievances.

“Now, you think I want to spoil the chances of my members getting their due diligence by going into romance with the opposition. Is the opposition in government? Do they have the responsibility to solve this problem? It is the people in government who have the responsibility to solve this problem,” he said.

He added that NARD remains committed to engaging the current administration, expressing confidence that it has both the mandate and the capacity to address the issues raised by the union.

“There is a government in power. And we are loyal and responsible patriotic Nigerians who believe that the government can solve our problems.

“If we do not believe that this government can solve our problems, we will not have even brought it to the table in the first place. We have the conviction that this government can solve this problem. As a union leader, I cannot afford not to have the conviction that this government can solve our problems.”

Appealing directly to President Bola Tinubu to intervene decisively in the health sector crisis, Suleiman said, “We believe this government is responsive and responsible. We believe that the President of the country, President Bola Tinubu, will hear our cry.

“He will hear our call to him to come in and solve the welfare of not just resident doctors, but the entire health sector once and for all.”

Explaining why the strike had become unavoidable, the NARD president said agreements reached with the Federal Government had repeatedly stalled, with new conditions introduced and some even reversed without consultation.

“Now, today, what we are hearing is that the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) has to do a job evaluation before CBA can continue, and that that job evaluation must last six months. This has not been communicated to us, but it has been communicated to Nigeria’s public freely today in the media. So it is like the goalpost keeps changing,” he said.

He expressed doubt that the delays would end even if fresh conditions were met, saying, “I have the utmost confidence that even if the NSIWC finishes the job evaluation today, another reason will be concocted as to why CBA cannot continue.

“So perhaps it is time to come clean, not just to Nigerians, but to come clean to all healthcare workers. I think if the Federal Government is not interested in this issue, they should make it clear they are not interested in this issue,” he said.

He added that attempts to portray divisions among health workers were misleading, saying, “It is the responsibility of the government, and not doctors, to deliver health care services. We are just the tool in the hands of the Ministry of Health to deliver that.”

Suleiman said the National Executive Council (NEC) of NARD had already taken a firm position, “The NEC categorically stated if these issues are not sorted out, we will down tools. So that is the message from the NEC,” he said.

He noted that despite signing the MoU on November 27, and contrary to the Minister of State for Health Dr. Adekunle Salako’s claims, there had been no tangible progress.

Salako, on a national television morning show, said the Tinubu administration approved a review of health workers’ professional allowances, raising annual government spending by about ₦90 billion, covering call duty, shift duty, non-clinical and rural posting allowances, following joint negotiations with all health worker groups.

Salako added that NARD’s demands had dropped from 19 to nine, though some remaining issues are limited by civil service rules and approved schemes of service.

Affirming that none of the 19 demands, later reduced to nine, has been implemented, Suleiman said, “I can confirm to you that the MoU signed has a 27th of November. Today is the 6th of January, 2026. Every issue is either at the point where the MoU was on the 27th of November, or we have even gone backwards.”

On the claims by the Minister that ₦90 billion has been earmarked for the doctors’ claims in the 2026 budget, Suleiman challenged the government to demonstrate transparency.

“Since they have said it is ₦90 billion, let them show us inside the budget where they put that ₦90 billion. So that healthcare workers will have peace of mind that our allowances were adjusted appropriately,” he said.

Describing official statements as misleading, he added, “This is a gimmick. And I call it a gimmick so that Nigerians will look at us as being selfish.”

On the issue of unpaid arrears and omissions, Suleiman disclosed that about 40 percent of resident doctors were affected. “There are failed payments, which means the names were on the initial list, but the money has not arrived.

“The second problem is those that were supposed to be on the list at the initial that were omitted for one reason or another. And there is a lot in this category,” the NARD president noted.

He stressed that funding remained the responsibility of the government.l, noting, “The availability of the funds is the responsibility of the government.

“The money is still in the account. We have done our own by compiling failed payments and omissions, which is about 40 percent of our members. Now it is for the government to pay the remaining.

On professional allowances, Suleiman rejected claims that resident doctors were demanding fresh salary increases, adding, “It is not a salary increment. It is an injustice. When they brought 18 months, we accepted it because we wanted progress.”

Of concern, according to Suleiman, was the redeployment of five disengaged resident doctors of Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja, instead of reinstating them with back pay as recommended by multiple investigative panels and reflected in the signed MoU.

The association also criticized delays in transmitting compiled promotion arrears from 62 tertiary health institutions to the Budget Office and Ministry of Finance, stalling promised payments.

Salary arrears across several federal hospitals remain unpaid, with backlogs ranging from four to over 20 months.

Further grievances include non-issuance of Part One certificates by the National Postgraduate Medical College, non-recognition of West African College specialist certificates in Nigeria, and the abandonment of Committees meant to regulate excessive work hours and locum employment by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Suleiman, however, reaffirmed the union’s readiness for dialogue but warned that patience had limits: “Whatever is responsible for the delay, if we sit down at the table, we can sort it out.

“But since these delays are even coming despite having MoUs, we will not continue to wait indefinitely,” he said.

Victor Osimhen not leaving AFCON camp — NFF official

    • …outburst with Lookman resolved

A top official of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed rumours that Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen would leave the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) camp in Morocco.

On Tuesday, some reports claimed that Osimhen said he was leaving the camp for Turkey. “Confirmed reports have it that Victor Osimhen said he was done with the national team. He dropped his accreditation and said he was going to Turkey.”

However, the NFF official clarified the situation after speaking with FIFA- and CAF-accredited journalist Adepoju Samuel, confirming that the matter had been resolved.

Samuel wrote on his X handle on Tuesday, “A top team official just confirmed the latest situation over yesterday’s incident.

“The official said everything has been sorted since last night, and we are all good. There was no discussion about Osimhen leaving the tournament. The issue has been resolved as a family.”

The incident occurred in the 63rd minute, when Osimhen appeared frustrated after Lookman, who had already created two chances for him, failed to capitalize on an opportunity. Footage showed Osimhen pulling away from Captain Wilfred Ndidi, pointing at Lookman, and shouting in displeasure. He could be heard saying in pidgin:

“No try am again,” meaning “do not try that again.” Osimhen later requested to be substituted and was booed by fans as Moses Simon replaced him.

The outburst sparked criticism on social media, with fans questioning Osimhen’s behaviour despite Nigeria’s dominant performance.

However, Lookman addressed the rumours on Tuesday by posting pictures on Instagram with Osimhen and Bruno Onyemaechi on the pitch after the win, captioning the images:

    “Together always.”

Both Eagles coach Eric Chelle and Captain Wilfred Ndidi have also dismissed claims of a misunderstanding between the two forwards, urging Nigerians to continue supporting the team as they prepare for their quarter-final clash against either Algeria or DR Congo.
