Insecurity: ALGON acknowledges Tinubu’s efforts, calls for more protection of vulnerable population

The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has acknowledged the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in addressing national security and economic challenges, while urging the presidency to strengthen protection of vulnerable populations.

The association spoke during its 52nd National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, held at Blue Springs Hotel, Abuja.

As part of its resolutions, ALGON observed that the Local Government Areas are porous and exposed to easy invasion of terrorist groups and bandits.

The meeting reaffirmed ALGON’s commitment in strengthening local governance and pledged continued collaboration with the Federal Government, State Governments, and Development Partners to ensure effective service delivery at the grassroots.

“After hours of deliberation, the NEC expressed grave concern over the rising insecurity across the country and condemned in strong terms the abduction of children, mothers, and other vulnerable individuals.

“While appreciating the efforts of the Federal and State Governments, the Council urged them, alongside Security Agencies, to intensify intelligence gathering, deployment of modern equipment, search-and-rescue operations, and community policing initiatives,” the communiqué, signed by ALGON National Publicity Secretary, Anani Hamisu, stated.

NEC emphasised that restoring public confidence in security is essential, as failure to protect citizens undermines all other functions of government.

The association pledged to explore all avenues for agricultural development to promote food security, aimed at supporting the Federal and States Governments.

It stressed the importance of supporting farmers with modern tools, credit facilities, and adequate security.

NEC also highlighted the growing unemployment crisis among youths, calling for targeted empowerment programmes at the local level and appealing to the Federal Government to ensure inclusive plans that allow LGAs to field qualified candidates in current vacancies across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

The Arinjale of Ise- Ekiti, Oba Adetunji Ayodele Ajayi, has appealed to Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji to intervene in the rehabilitation of roads and renewal of infrastructures in the community.

Oba Ajayi said the deplorable condition of both internal and access roads had continued to hinder economic activities and ease of movement within the town.

The traditional ruler made the appeal on Tuesday in Ise-Ekiti, headquarters of Ise /Orun local government area of the state, during a press conference to herald the 2025 edition of the annual Ojoaduse festival.

Oba Ajayi also called for the upgrading of public infrastructure in the community, including health facilities, schools, water supply, electricity, and drainage systems, saying modern infrastructure was key to improving the quality of life of residents and curbing rural–urban migration.

He commended indigenes of Ise-Ekiti in the diaspora for their consistent support of community projects and the Ojoaduse Festival, urging them to sustain their contributions.

The monarch explained that the annual Ojoaduse Festival remained a unifying cultural institution that had helped to preserve the heritage and identity of the people of Ise-Ekiti while also driving community development.

He noted that activities associated with the festival had led to improvements in the palace, the development of a civic centre, and increased visibility for the town, attracting partnerships as well as investments.

Oba Ajayi added that the gains recorded so far demonstrated that culture and development could work together to promote social cohesion and economic growth when properly coordinated by community leaders in collaboration with the government.

Oba Ajayi further appealed to youths, professional bodies, religious groups, and market associations to take collective ownership of the festival to ensure its sustainability and relevance for future generations.

He reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, harmony, and inclusive growth and development, expressing confidence that with the support of the government and the collective efforts of indigenes, Ise-Ekiti would witness accelerated development.

APC fixes Ebonyi LG primary election for January 25

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State has fixed January 25, 2026, for the party’s primaries for the forthcoming local government and councilorship elections in the state.

The state chairman of the party, Stanley Okoro Emegha, disclosed this to journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital, after the SEC meeting of the party on Monday this week.

He advised political appointees who want to contest the elections to resign in line with Governor Francis Nwifuru’s directive last month.

“The primary election for both councillorship and chairmanship will be held on January 25, but the processes will commence earlier in January,” he added.

“If you are a public servant under the governor’s appointment, you must resign 30 days before the primary election. Anybody who did not resign by December 20, 2025, is not qualified to contest,” Emegha said.

The chairman said membership revalidation would begin once the party receives the required registration code.

He assured members that transparency would guide all party activities.

He boasted that the APC currently has total political control in the state, with all the opposition lawmakers of the state now APC members

“We have 171 out of 171 ward councillors, 13 out of 13 local government chairmen, 24 out of 24 House of Assembly members, six National Assembly members and three out of three senators,” he stated.

Emegha revealed that the remaining opposition federal lawmaker in the state, Iduma Igariwey, representing Afikpo and Edda federal constituency, has dumped PDP for the APC and has registered in his Itim 001 ward in Afikpo

“If I bring the register here, I will show you that this is Itim 001 ward, the ward of Chief Iduma Igariwey. His name is fully written in the register,” he said.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says its C-130 aircraft on maintenance programme to Portugal has made a stopover in Banjul, The Gambia, on Tuesday.

NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, revealed this in a statement.

The statement read, “The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) confirms that its C-130 aircraft, which earlier made a precautionary landing during a ferry flight, has successfully continued its journey and landed safely in Banjul, The Gambia, today.

“This is after transiting Accra in line with an updated flight plan, routing through Casablanca to Portugal for scheduled depot maintenance. Ferry flights for aircraft programmed for maintenance are required to operate through designated airfields, with movements appropriately spaced in accordance with established aviation safety procedures. All personnel are safe, and the aircraft remains serviceable.

BRT operator celebrates 10 years of moving 35 million Lagosians

Primero Transport Services Limited, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, celebrated ten years of operations on Lagos roads, marking a decade in which the Bus Rapid Transit operator moved more than 35 million Lagosians daily to work, school, and home across the city.

Operating the flagship Ikorodu to TBS corridor in partnership with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, the company said it recorded a total ridership of 35,205,228 passengers over the period, while its fleet covered 150,800,149.19 kilometres, underscoring its central role in Lagos public transport.

The anniversary event placed strong emphasis on the people behind the buses, with Primero’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Fola Tinubu, setting aside his prepared remarks to pay tribute to staff whose commitment sustained operations through challenging periods

“Ten years ago, we did not know how everything would turn out,” Tinubu said. “That we are still here today is because of you. Without you, there is no Primero.”

He recalled moments of severe operational strain, including times when salaries were delayed, yet employees remained at their posts to keep services running.

“I remember those times clearly, and you stayed,” he said. “No managing director can ask for better people.”

Tinubu highlighted the daily sacrifices of frontline workers who left their homes as early as 4 am to meet early departures, often travelling long distances and working in difficult weather conditions.

“In the sun and in the rain, they were always there,” he said. “The buses cannot drive themselves. It is the people who make it work.”

He also reflected on a fatal road accident involving a truck collision that claimed the lives of passengers and a driver, noting that staff returned to work the following day, a gesture he said demonstrated extraordinary dedication.

“That moment showed me your commitment to Primero was unquestionable,” Tinubu said.

In a goodwill message, the Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, represented by Bayonle Oladejo, Public Bus Transit Planner at LAMATA, praised Primero for translating public transport policy into consistent service delivery.

“You did not just embrace the vision, you operationalised it,” Oladejo said. “You became the force behind the Ikorodu corridor, setting standards for safety, reliability, and scale.”

Beyond scale and service, Primero emerged as a pioneer within the BRT system, becoming the first operator to introduce Wi Fi connectivity and electronic ticketing to Lagos BRT services, innovations that improved passenger experience and operational efficiency.

Looking ahead, the company outlined plans to convert 100 diesel-powered buses in its fleet to compressed natural gas by next year and confirmed that an electric bus was already operating along the Ikorodu to TBS route.

  • NCTC boss: Responsible reporting key to FG’s counterterrorism efforts

NCTC boss: Responsible reporting key to FG’s counterterrorism efforts

The National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Office of the National Security Adviser, Major General Garba Laka, has cautioned the media against reporting sensitive information that could jeopardize the Federal Government’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts.

General Laka appealed end-of-the-year media parley with Defence Correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said, “In an era of instant news cycles, digital virality, and intense competition for breaking stories, the line between public interest and national security imperatives can sometimes become blurred.

“Operational details, intelligence-led activities, and ongoing investigations are, by their nature, highly sensitive. Premature or detailed disclosure of such information, however well-intentioned, can compromise operations, endanger lives, undermine ongoing efforts, and inadvertently aid adversaries who actively exploit open-source information.”

Laka praised the media for its consistent support, saying its reporting had helped shape public understanding of complex security realities, amplify national counterterrorism narratives, and improve awareness of security issues, thereby strengthening public confidence in the government’s counterterrorism efforts.

He said, “As a Centre, we have long recognized and deeply valued the consistent support you have extended to our work. Through accurate reporting, responsible commentary, and constructive engagement, you have played a vital role in enhancing national awareness, countering extremist propaganda, and promoting unity in the face of adversity. These contributions are both significant and deeply appreciated.

“At the same time, this parley provides an important platform to reiterate a matter of critical national interest: the need for caution in the handling and dissemination of sensitive security information. In an era of instant news cycles, digital virality, and intense competition for breaking stories, the line between public interest and national security imperatives can sometimes become blurred.

“Operational details, intelligence-led activities, and ongoing investigations are, by their nature, highly sensitive. Premature or detailed disclosure of such information, however well-intentioned, can compromise operations, endanger lives, undermine ongoing efforts, and inadvertently aid adversaries who actively exploit open-source information.

“Ladies and gentlemen, our appeal, therefore, is not for silence, but for responsibility. Not for restraint in holding institutions accountable, but for discernment in separating what should be reported immediately from what should be handled with caution or deferred in the overriding interest of national security.”

Laka noted that national security and press freedom are not opposing forces but complementary pillars of a stable democracy, stressing that while a well-informed public is essential, so too is the protection of sensitive operational processes that safeguard citizens and those on the frontlines of security.

He said that, as partners, the NCTC encourages continued dialogue, consultation, and mutual trust, even as it remains committed to engaging the media through briefings, background sessions, and structured information sharing to ensure that reporting is accurate, well-contextualized, and does not inadvertently jeopardize national security objectives.

The NCTC boss emphasized that evolving terrorist and bandit tactics require stronger coordination, deeper intelligence sharing, and strategic communication that denies criminals publicity while reassuring citizens of the state’s resolve and capacity.

“As we look ahead to the coming year, our collective task remains clear: terrorism, violent extremism, and organized criminals continue to evolve in form and tactics. Countering them requires efficient strategic communication, public awareness, and national cohesion.

“In this regard, the media remains a vital ally. Therefore, your continued cooperation and understanding are indispensable. We count on your continued support, understanding, and responsible partnership as we work together to keep Nigeria safe, secure, and united,” Laka said.

Rivers State is now one of the most peaceful states in the country, and that’s largely due to the leadership of a responsible Governor and the good people of Ogoniland,” the NSA added.
