Health advocates renew calls for stronger response to sickle cell disorder

Public health advocates have renewed calls for stronger public education and decisive policy action to improve awareness, promote early detection, expand access to care, and ensure sustained blood availability for people living with sickle cell disorder.

They said the call is imperative as Nigeria continues to bear the world’s heaviest burden of the inherited condition, despite decades of medical knowledge, awareness campaigns, and advocacy efforts.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday at a blood donation and public advocacy event organised by the Jephthah Ohiomokhare Sickle Cell Foundation in collaboration with partner organisations, the advocates said sickle cell disorder remains both a public health and social challenge, fuelled by poor awareness, weak prevention practices, limited access to specialised care, and persistent stigma.

Executive Director of the Jephthah Ohiomokhare Sickle Cell Foundation, Senami Ohiomokhare, described Nigeria’s sickle cell burden as deeply troubling, noting that awareness has not translated into sufficient preventive behaviour.

She identified low uptake of genotype testing, delayed diagnosis, gaps in access to care, and irregular blood supply as persistent obstacles.

According to her, early testing and informed conversations about genotype compatibility remain critical, particularly among young people, to reduce the number of children born with the condition.

Beyond prevention, she said the foundation is focused on supporting people already living with sickle cell disorder by promoting access to accurate information, modern treatment options, and quality healthcare.

She clarified that while many Nigerians believe there is no cure, bone marrow transplant is a recognised curative option, and several medications can significantly reduce pain crises and improve quality of life when properly administered.

She added that through outreach programmes and essay competitions, the foundation has reached hundreds of students and young people, while continuing to advocate for policy reform, improved care pathways, and an end to stigma and discrimination.

Ohiomokhare said the foundation was created to transform personal loss into sustained advocacy and practical support for people living with sickle cell disorder, noting that although her late son’s life was cut short by the condition, his legacy continues to inspire compassion, responsibility, and action within the sickle cell community.

On her part, media mogul and Executive Director of the Tosin Abimbola Dokpesi Foundation, Tosin Dokpesi, called for stronger implementation of health policies and continuity in government programmes addressing sickle cell disorder.

She argued that policies must translate into measurable action rather than remain dormant in official documents, urging successive administrations to sustain impactful initiatives instead of abandoning them.

Dokpesi also highlighted the need for accurate and updated medical testing, noting that advances in diagnostics mean many Nigerians should reconfirm their genotype and blood group.

She emphasised the role of education and responsible use of social media, encouraging citizens to seek verified health information and take personal responsibility for preventive healthcare decisions.

On her part, sickle cell survivor Rabi Maidunama, founder of the Maidunama Sickle Cell Foundation, and President of the Pan Africa Sickle Cell Federation, urged Nigerians to replace fear and misinformation with compassion and informed decision-making.

Drawing from personal experience, she said she was diagnosed as a child at a time when genotype awareness and genetic counselling were limited, forcing her family to navigate the condition with little guidance.

Maidunama stressed that sickle cell should be described as a disorder rather than a disease, noting that the latter term wrongly suggests contagion and fuels stigma.

She described the condition as unpredictable and physically exhausting, explaining that pain crises can affect any part of the body and escalate rapidly.

She condemned discrimination, particularly against children and adolescents living with sickle cell, warning that harmful language and social exclusion worsen the emotional toll of the disorder.

The advocacy event also featured a creative collaboration with visual artists, including Etuk Oyinma, who said art offers an alternative platform for amplifying conversations around sickle cell disorder.

He explained that proceeds from the exhibition would support advocacy and care efforts, while also serving as a tribute to Jephthah Ohiomokhare.

According to him, sustained awareness, across both medical and cultural spaces, remains essential to improving outcomes for people living with sickle cell disorder in Nigeria.

  • Renewed Hope: Fubara, TAF inaugurate first phase of 20,000 low-cost housing units in Rivers

Renewed Hope: Fubara, TAF inaugurate first phase of 20,000 low-cost housing units in Rivers

    • …Firm attributes success to Fubara’s commitment, policies

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and the Winner of Affordable Housing Company of the Year 2025, TAF Global, have inaugurated 1000 out of the 20,000 proposed low-cost housing units designed by the government as the Renewed Hope Housing Estate.

Speaking while inaugurating the first phase of the project at the Greater TAF City Housing Estate along the Airport Road, Obirikwere, Rivers, Fubara said the intervention was aimed at complementing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision in the housing sector.

The governor said, “We approached here sometime last year to allocate land for 1000 housing units called the Renewed Hope Housing Estate. What we have done today is providing our first phase of our 20,000 units.

“Imagine when the Federal Government 1000 will be coming in, and our remaining 19,000 is completed, there will be no housing problem in Rivers State anymore.

“There won’t be people engaging in crime, because the major reason people get involved in crime is that they are looking for a way to survive and meet their basic needs in life. I can assure Rivers people that when it comes to the need for housing as an issue, we have taken it upon ourselves to make a different mark in this country.

The governor recalled that the housing project idea was conceived during the most difficult period of his administration, adding that the execution phase faced more challenges than other developmental projects in the state.

He said through the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, the previous administration acquired land to move development from the city centre to other areas to decongest Port Harcourt, accommodate the people, and make life easier.

But he said, “You won’t believe that when we started this project, we had over 90 lawsuits and people claiming that they owned the land and the government had not paid. However, we give God the glory that, one way or another, we were able to surmount these challenges. It wasn’t just a challenge, it was a deliberate measure to frustrate our idea; frustrate this vision for the protection of the lives of our people.”

He commended the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, the TAF Global, some responsible and respected leaders of the host community, and other stakeholders who supported the project.

He said the 1000 housing units were designed for the middle-income earners, insisting that his government was moving development from the city centre to other areas.

The governor called on persons allocated land in the area to begin development immediately to speed up the growth of the site, saying that Rivers should not be known as a one-city state.

Fubara said his administration would continue to support the TAF Global to ensure the completion of the envisioned 20,000 housing units.

The governor, who said many people were surprised at the progress of the project, reiterated his administration’s uncompromising stance on peace and the passion of his government to protect Rivers’ interest.

Fubara said, “I know that a lot of people will be shocked and surprised that this project would get to this stage. But you should understand the person you are dealing with. We are committed, determined, and the interest of Rivers State is above our personal interest. So, if that is our model this is just the beginning.

“We are happy today, and I urge everyone to maintain peace. Peace is the only thing that will bring development, and it is the ingredient that development thrives on. Conduct yourselves peacefully. What is important to me is the progress and development of Rivers State, and that should also be important to you.”

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Greater TAF Nigeria and TAF Africa Global Limited, Mr. Mustapha Njie, recalled that two years ago, Fubara laid the foundation for the Greater TAF City project.

He said, “Exactly two years ago, on this very ground, His Excellency did more than perform a ceremonial groundbreaking; he ignited a vision, a vision of dignity, security, and prosperity for the people of Rivers State.

“That vision, formalised through an MoU, a Joint Venture Agreement, and a Certificate of Occupancy, has today materialised into the delivery of the first one thousand homes.”

Njie expressed appreciation to the governor for his unwavering support and leadership, saying he created the enabling environment to actualise the project.

Addressing the governor, Njie said, “Your Excellency, on behalf of TAF Africa Global Limited and Greater TAF Nigeria Limited, I extend our deepest gratitude. The enabling environment created by your administration has been the foundation of this achievement.

“You championed this partnership, and today we are not merely handing over houses; we are fulfilling a promise made to the people of Rivers State.”

He also commended the Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority for its consistent collaboration, describing the project as a model of what could be achieved when public and private sectors worked together with a shared commitment to the public good.

Addressing the host community, Mr. Njie acknowledged their cooperation and goodwill, describing them as the heartbeat of the project.

He said, “To the host community of Greater TAF City, thank you for your warmth, trust, and belief in this project. You are not just hosts; you are the heartbeat of this new city. We remain committed to shared prosperity, peace, and continued partnership.”

He praised the dedication of the Board, management, and staff of TAF Africa Global, Greater TAF Nigeria, and Pricewise Homes Limited, with special recognition of Executive Directors Datubo Pepple and Zubi Arguba.

Njie also acknowledged contractors, subcontractors, and technical partners for their professionalism and craftsmanship, as well as clients and homeowners for entrusting the company with their dream of homeownership.

He attributed the achievements directly to the governor’s leadership and policy, saying that the accolades reflected what was possible when visionary governance aligned with committed private-sector partners.

He said, “Today, we lay not just bricks and mortar, but the foundation for thousands more homes, thriving businesses, empowered families, and a lasting legacy of sustainable development.

“We are honoured to walk this journey with you, Your Excellency, as we advance toward TAF Africa Global’s vision of delivering one million homes across Africa.”

Ngige’s lawyer, Patrick Ikwueto (SAN) prayed the court to, among others, grant bail to his client on health grounds

He submitted that the former Minister would not jump bail or interfere with the prosecution’s witnesses if granted bail.

Responding, prosecuting lawyer Sylvanus Tahir (SAN), objected, claiming that Ngige is a flight risk.

Tahir said the EFCC had earlier granted Ngige administrative bail and allowed him to travel abroad for medical care, but failed to subsequently report back to the EFCC.

Police arrest woman over alleged AK-47 ammunition trafficking

Police operatives of the Force Intelligence Department, Special Tactical Squad (FID-STS) in Niger state, have arrested a 35-year-old woman, Zuwaira Usman, for allegedly transporting ammunition for criminal groups.

The arrest, which took place at about 5 pm on November 4, 2025, in Niger State, was made following intelligence reports linking her to the movement of arms and ammunition.

Usman, who hails from Pandogari in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, was alleged to have specialised in conveying ammunition for hoodlums across states.

During interrogation, the Niger state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abiodun Wasiu, said Usman confessed that she met a man identified as Lawali in Birnin-Gwari, Kaduna State, in September 2025, where they exchanged phone numbers.

She told investigators that Lawali later asked her to travel to Warri, Delta State, to collect a package on his behalf and gave her N20,000 as transport fare.

According to her account, Lawali coordinated her movement by speaking with the driver while she was en route and directing where she would be dropped off in Warri.

On arrival, she said she met a man on a motorcycle, later identified as Ahmed, who handed her a sack containing a flask with items meant for delivery to Lawali and gave her an additional N30,000 for her return trip.

Police said Usman returned with the package to Birnin-Gwari, where it was discovered that the flask contained 2,500 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.

Further investigations revealed that Ahmed has since been arrested in Delta State, while efforts are ongoing to track down Lawali as investigations continue.

  • Niger Delta: Tinubu happy with 4,500 PAP scholarship students in one year, says Otuaro

Niger Delta: Tinubu happy with 4,500 PAP scholarship students in one year, says Otuaro

The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Dr Dennis Otuaro, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is happy with the significant achievements recorded by the agency, especially the deployment of 4,500 Niger Delta scholarship students within one year.

He spoke at the flag-off of the fourth batch of the two-day “Leadership, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Mediation Training for PAP Stakeholders” organised by the agency in collaboration with the Alumni Association of the National Defence College (AANDEC) at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, on Monday.

The PAP in July and August 2025 successfully conducted a similar capacity-building workshop for three batches of its stakeholders at the same military facility.

Otuaro, who said the President was delighted with the agency’s expanded scholarship scheme, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and peacebuilding process in the Niger Delta, urged stakeholders to maintain their position as key players in the region’s peace and development.

According to him, President Tinubu is very supportive of the programme because of his strong desire for the region to enjoy sustainable peace, stability, and development.

Otuaro reiterated that the workshop was a vital component of the PAP’s peace process with all stakeholders as important partners in the peace initiative.

The Administrator, in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Igoniko Oduma, stressed that the participants were not only partners for peace, but also the president’s peace ambassadors.

The PAP boss also applauded the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for his strategic support to strengthen the programme’s initiatives and enable it to achieve the intended objectives for the people of the region.

While declaring the workshop open, Otuaro said, “His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is very happy with what we have achieved so far in one year and nine months. As stakeholders, you should continue to be key players in the peace and development of the Niger Delta, which His Excellency has been very supportive of and desirous of.

“The objective behind this training is to ensure that all of us are partners in every peace effort in the Niger Delta. This initiative is also to give you a sense of belonging.

“When we organised this workshop in July and August this year, we assured stakeholders that more people would also participate in the training. We don’t want to do the PAP’s work alone. It is a process of putting our heads together to ensure that the region is peaceful and united. When we are united, Mr President will do more for the region.

“We must also realise that peace starts from our communities; you all are leaders in your own right. I know and acknowledge the support that the Office has received since we came on board. This leadership workshop is part of our peacebuilding process and is designed to ensure that peace is sustained in our region.

“Since we came on board, we have redirected the Programme towards our people and for the next generation. We have achieved a lot. This 2025-2026 academic session, we have sent 4,500 students, our future leaders, on scholarships to universities within Nigeria. We are doing this to invest in the future of our region.”

Otuaro said that his leadership would not be distracted by the smear campaign of some anti-Niger Delta elements who were angry that the programme had been taken to the people of the region, saying “nobody will hold the region to ransom.”

He further urged stakeholders not to be manipulated by political merchants, but to massively support President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid because of his clear agenda for the region.

Otuaro enjoined the stakeholders to participate actively in the workshop and utilise the lessons they would gain to strengthen peace and development in their communities and the Niger Delta in general.

He also expressed appreciation to the management of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, resource persons, and the President of AANDEC, Rear Admiral Ndidi Agholor (retd.), for partnering with the PAP to deepen the peace process in the region.

  • Akwa Ibom Senator hails Otti for restoring Abia urban pride

Akwa Ibom Senator hails Otti for restoring Abia urban pride

Former Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Emmanuel Ibok Essien, has commended Abia  Governor, Alex Otti, for what he described as a visible and massive transformation of Aba and other major cities in the State through renewed infrastructure development and improved urban sanitation.

Senator Ibok Essien, who is also the Founder of Ritman University, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, made the remark while driving through Aba and Umuahia en route to neighbouring Rivers State.

He observed with delight that the scale and pace of work carried out by the Otti administration within just over two years deserved sincere commendation.

He singled out the turnaround of Aba’s urban roads and drainage projects, including the reconstruction of the once dilapidated Port Harcourt Road, now expanded into a modern six-lane carriageway with streetlights, roundabouts and proper drainage, describing it as the restoration of a major economic artery abandoned for decades.

Drawing from personal experience, the elder statesman recalled that he was part of the team of engineers that supervised the original construction of Aba Urban Roads and Drainages by MCC, which included the Port Harcourt Road in Aba between 1979 and 1983, when Abia was under the old Imo State and governed by the late Sam Mbakwe, the first elected civilian governor of the State.

He observed that since that period, the roads and much of Aba’s infrastructure suffered prolonged neglect, making the current expansion and upgrade a landmark intervention that has restored connectivity and eased movement across the commercial city.

The Fellow, Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE) also praised the remodelling and reconstruction of the Ariaria International Market by Governor Otti, saying the project has repositioned Aba as a modern commercial hub with facilities that meet international standards.

He further noted the construction of several roads in Umuahia, the evacuation of long-standing refuse dumps, and the general improvement in sanitation across the State, stressing that these efforts have returned Aba and other urban centres to functional and livable conditions.

According to him, the fact that Aba has become passable again after decades of deplorable roads is a clear indication of purposeful leadership.
