  • Future of law lies in ethics, technology, not just legal knowledge — Prof Yusuf Ali

Future of law lies in ethics, technology, not just legal knowledge — Prof Yusuf Ali

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and legal luminary, Professor Yusuf Ali, has warned that the future of the legal profession will not belong to lawyers who merely know the law, but to those who combine sound legal knowledge with technological awareness and unwavering ethical discipline.

Professor Ali said the legal profession is currently at a crossroads, with innovation advancing faster than regulation and technology increasingly testing ethical boundaries.

He made the remarks in a keynote address delivered at the opening of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ibadan Branch 2025 Law Week, held on Monday at the Aare Afe Babalola Bar Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.

The event, themed “Law, Ethics and Innovation: Sustaining the Future of Legal Practice,”* attracted members of the bench and bar, legal scholars, and other stakeholders.

Speaking through Mutalubi Ojo, SAN, Professor Ali noted that the law, traditionally conservative and grounded in precedent and procedural rigidity, must now respond to the demands of a rapidly changing world. He described the theme of the Law Week as timely, urgent, and highly consequential.

“The legal profession stands today at a crossroads. Innovation is accelerating faster than regulation. Technology is testing the borders of ethics, and the expectations of clients, institutions, and society are evolving at a breathtaking pace,” he said.

He raised concerns about how the profession can preserve dignity, trust, and professionalism while embracing tools and technologies that will define the future of legal practice, stressing the need for deliberate, ethical, and visionary leadership.

Professor Ali observed that legal systems worldwide are undergoing transformation, with artificial intelligence now deployed in document review, risk analysis, and due diligence, while courts increasingly adopt virtual hearings and electronic filing systems.

He cautioned, however, that innovation in legal practice must be guided by ethics, warning that innovation without ethical discipline could erode trust, undermine fairness, and weaken the soul of the profession.

“Technology can accelerate justice, but it can also entrench inequality. AI can analyse data, but it can also encode bias. Digital platforms can reduce delays but may weaken procedural fairness. Automated tools can simplify work but undermine critical reasoning,” he said.

According to him, the future belongs not to lawyers who merely know the law, but to those who effectively integrate legal expertise, technological competence, and strong ethical values.

He added that the future of legal practice in Nigeria will not emerge by chance but through deliberate action, ethical leadership, and courageous innovation, urging lawyers to embrace relevance, ethics, competence, and progress.

In his goodwill message, the Oyo State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, emphasised the importance of professionalism, maturity, and values in the legal profession, especially amid technological disruption.

He recalled a recent Supreme Court proceeding involving the 36 states, where some lawyers displayed conduct below the expected standards, stressing that ethics and decorum must not be compromised.

Aikomo urged legal practitioners to take discussions on ethics, innovation, and information technology seriously, noting that the future of the profession depends on it.

In her goodwill message, Nigeria’s first female lawyer, Folake Solanke, expressed her deep affection for the legal profession, describing it as the “one and only learned profession in the world”.

However, she lamented that allegations of misconduct by some lawyers tarnish the profession’s reputation, affecting all its members. She emphasized the importance of eliminating corruption and misconduct, noting that it would be easy if every lawyer were committed to being corruption-free.

Mama Solanke reminisced about the golden age of the legal profession, when lawyers prepared cases diligently and presented them confidently, knowing that judgments would be based on the law and facts. She prayed for a return to that era, when confidence and trust were extended to Nigerian lawyers and judges.

She thanked the Nigerian Bar Association for lifting the ban on women wearing trousers and expressed gratitude for the recognition she has received from the legal community.

Immigration flags off anti-corruption campaign at Lagos Port

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) on Monday flagged off the fourth edition of its nationwide sensitisation anti-corruption campaign themed “Innovating for Transparency and Efficiency, Strengthening Service Delivery and Combating Corruption at the Apapa Port in Lagos.”

Speaking during the campaign flag-off, the Comptroller-General of Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap, stated that technology innovations have reduced human interference, minimised delays, and curtailed opportunities for corruption.

Nandap, who was represented by the Controller of Immigration, Lagos Port, Clementina Ogbudu, also said that through strict enforcement of ethical codes and disciplinary measures, the NIS has sent a strong message that corruption has no place in the Nigeria Immigration Service.

According to her, “Distinguished guests, esteemed colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, it is with great honour and a deep sense of responsibility that I welcome you all to this flag-off ceremony of our sensitization campaign themed” Innovating for Transparency and Efficiency: Strengthening Service Delivery and Combating Corruption through Reforms.”

“This campaign is not just a slogan; it is a call to action. It reflects our collective resolve to build an Immigration Service that is modern, transparent, and efficient – one that stands as a bulwark against corruption and inefficiency, and one that delivers services with integrity and excellence.

“In recent years, the Nigerian Immigration Service has embraced technology to simplify and secure its processes. From the automation of passport applications to the deployment of biometric systems at our borders, these innovations have reduced human interference, minimized delays, and curtailed opportunities for corruption.

“By digitising our operations, we have not only enhanced transparency but also ensured that our services meet the expectations of citizens in a rapidly changing world.

“We have also restructured our service centre to prioritize speed, fairness, and accountability. Citizens now experience shorter waiting times, clearer procedures, and improved customer service – hallmarks of an institution committed to efficiency. These reforms are proof that when systems are designed with transparency in mind, efficiency naturally follows.

“Equally important has been our unwavering commitment to combating corruption. Through strict enforcement of ethical codes and disciplinary measures, we have sent a strong message: corruption has no place in the Nigeria Immigration Service.

“Our officers are being trained and retrained to uphold integrity as the cornerstone of their duty. This campaign reinforces that message, reminding us all that transparency is not optional – it is essential.

“Furthermore, we have strengthened collaboration with sister agencies, international partners, and civil society to ensure that our reforms are not only internal but also part of a wider national and global effort to combat corruption and enhance transparency.

These partnerships, she said, “I have expanded our capacity, improved oversight, and aligned our service delivery with international best practices.

“Today, as we flag off this campaign, I urge all officers, stakeholders, and citizens to join hands with us. Transparency is not the responsibility of one leader or one institution; it is the duty of all. Efficiency is not achieved by reforms alone; it is sustained by the commitment of each individual to do what is right. Together, we can build an Immigration Service that Nigerians are proud of —a service that is innovative, transparent, efficient, and incorruptible.

“Let this campaign reinforce our journey towards excellence. Thank you, and may God bless the Nigeria Immigration Service, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Before I end my message, I would like to use this opportunity to acknowledge some of our colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty at Munguno, Tuga, and Luma, Borno, Kebbi, and Niger States, respectively, while on duty at their various field posts in some of the National Security Operations.

“They were attacked by unknown gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram and ISWAP. Their dedication, service, and sacrifice remain a cornerstone of our collective mission. We honour their memory, and we stand with their families during this difficult time.

“In recognition of their contributions, may I respectfully invite everyone to please rise as we observe a minute’s silence in their honour.”

Other agencies at the event were officials of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and NAFDAC, among others.

  • Showunmi to Atiku, Obi: EFCC probes not a threat to democracy

Showunmi to Atiku, Obi: EFCC probes not a threat to democracy

Former spokesman for Vice President Atiku Abubakar during the build-up to the 2019 presidential election, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has said the arrest and investigation of former public officials by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other federal agencies should not be seen as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy or an attempt to suppress opposition leaders.

Showunmi said the real danger to democracy lies in attempts by some political actors to present opposition status as immunity from arrest and prosecution for alleged offences.

The former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State in the 2023 general elections made the remarks on Monday, reacting to concerns raised by leading opposition figures who on Sunday warned of an increasing threat to Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

The Nation reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, former APC National Chairman and ex-Edo State governor Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, PDP leader Chief Bode George and others had, in a joint statement, alleged that state institutions, particularly the EFCC, the Nigeria Police and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), were being used to intimidate and weaken opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.

They also warned that Nigeria was drifting towards a de facto one-party state through pressure on opposition governors and political actors rather than through a transparent democratic process.

However, in a statement to The Nation, Showunmi, who is the Convener of The Alternative, a movement advocating credible leadership, good governance, and accountability, said anti-corruption efforts are neither anti-opposition nor acts of persecution.

He stressed that being in the opposition does not confer a licence to steal or protection from accountability, adding that investigation should not be mistaken for persecution.

According to him, the EFCC and other anti-graft agencies are legally obligated to investigate allegations of economic and financial crimes.

Showunmi said Nigeria must not sacrifice the rule of law for political convenience, noting that those with clean records have nothing to fear, while former public officials with questions to answer should do so before the law.

He said, “Nigeria’s democracy is not under threat because public officials are being investigated. It is under threat when political actors attempt to weaponise opposition status as immunity from the law.

“The Constitution mandates the state to abolish corruption and abuse of power. It does not create exemptions for opposition leaders, former office holders, or political coalitions. The only immunity recognised by law is limited and temporary, and it ends when a public officer leaves office.

“Investigation is not persecution. The EFCC and other anti-graft agencies are legally bound to investigate allegations of economic and financial crimes. Investigation, arrest, and prosecution carried out within the law do not violate fundamental rights.

“Calling an investigation victimisation does not make it so. What truly threatens Nigeria’s multiparty democracy is the attempt to intimidate or delegitimise anti-corruption institutions whenever probes involve politically exposed persons.

“Democracy does not mean freedom from scrutiny. It means submission to the law, especially by those who once held public trust.”
