Amotekun intercepts coal-laden truck, arrests 38 northern passengers in Ondo

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun, has intercepted a coal-laden truck conveying 38 passengers into Akure, the state capital.

The passengers were arrested at the Cathedral area of Akure metropolis in Akure South Local Government Area during a routine security operation.

The suspects, mostly youths aged between 20 and 27, were conveyed in a brand-new Mercedes-Benz truck with registration number GML 335 XR Jigawa.

Confirming the arrest on Monday, the Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, said the suspects could not satisfactorily explain their destination after a series of interrogations.

Adeleye said the suspects were currently being profiled to ascertain their identities and mission in the state.

“We are profiling all of them thoroughly. Anyone found culpable after investigations will face the full weight of the law, while those cleared will be returned to their states of origin,” he said.

He added that the area where the driver claimed to have picked up the passengers was considered prone to extremist activities.

Meanwhile, security sources said the suspects claimed they were unaware they had already entered Ondo State when they were intercepted.

The source added that the suspects told operatives they were on their way to meet their relatives in Ondo State but failed to provide verifiable addresses or contact details.

One of the passengers was reportedly found in possession of a uniform bearing the inscription “Commander,” alongside some charms.

He allegedly claimed to be a hunter but could not clearly explain his destination after leaving Gombe State.

The 20-year-old driver of the truck and his 19-year-old conductor told Amotekun operatives that they picked up the passengers along the route and had no prior relationship with them.

Tolani Alli announces ‘The HaTricks’ photography, storytelling masterclass

Award-winning photographer and visual storyteller, Tolani Alli, has announced the launch of The HaTricks Masterclass, a four-day photography and storytelling programme scheduled to take place from January 21 to January 24, 2026.

The announcement was made via her Instagram page, where Alli described the initiative as a deeply personal project shaped by years of intense creative work, high-pressure assignments, and the responsibility of documenting defining moments as they unfold.

“The HaTricks Masterclass was born from years of giving everything to this craft. The long nights. The early mornings. The pressure of getting it right when history is unfolding in front of you. It carries the lessons I learned through discipline, mistakes, correction, faith, and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence.”

According to Alli, the masterclass goes beyond teaching camera techniques, focusing instead on the principles that underpin powerful visual storytelling and professional presence.

“This is where I share not only how to make photographs, but how stories are truly built. How to see before you shoot. How to prepare before the moment arrives. How to show up with confidence in important rooms. How to tell real stories in a way that people remember and trust.”

Participants will be guided through topics including intentional composition, editing choices, narrative clarity, and the emotional intelligence required to communicate effectively across different platforms.

Alli further explained that impactful storytelling is not defined by visuals alone.

“Every frame I have made was intentional. From how it is composed, to how it is edited, to knowing when to add sound and when to let silence speak. From guiding leaders on how to show up well, to helping organizations and projects communicate clearly across platforms. The work is not just visual. It is about emotion, intention, and human connection.”

She described the programme as an open invitation to creatives who feel a deeper calling within their craft.

“If any part of this sounds like you. If you have ever cared deeply about getting it right. If you know you are meant to do more with your craft than just take pictures. Then this is me opening my hands and inviting you in.”

Registration for The HaTricks Masterclass is available in two categories. The General package, priced at ₦250,000, runs from January 21, 2026, while the VIP package, costing $2,000, will take place from January 23 to January 24, 2026, offering expanded access and deeper engagement.

Defence Ministry leads drive for local defence production — Minister

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd), has said that the Ministry of Defence, under the present administration, is prioritising the expansion of indigenous defence production to ensure sustainable long-term security capabilities.

He said the ongoing policy and legislative reforms are revitalising local defence industries, encouraging private sector participation, creating jobs and deepening local content while reducing dependence on foreign supplies.

Speaking on Monday at the Opening of the National Symposium/Lecture Series organised in commemoration of the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, in Abuja, the Minister noted that Nigeria was harnessing the expertise of skilled professionals at home and abroad to strengthen defence innovation and capacity building.

He said locally manufactured defence platforms now reflected the growing strength of Nigeria’s defence industrial base and its contribution to regional security and economic growth.

The minister said improved training of Special Forces and stronger collaboration with regional and international partners had enhanced intelligence sharing and operational effectiveness against transnational threats.

He added that sustained military offensives across various theatres had recorded notable successes, while improved naval operations and maritime domain awareness had curtailed criminal activities and protected critical national assets.

Musa stressed that security was a shared responsibility, calling on communities, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and local governments to support efforts to disrupt criminal networks.

He urged participants at the symposium to produce practical recommendations to further strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture and national cohesion.

The minister commended the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, and personnel of the Armed Forces for their resilience and dedication, assuring Nigerians that the military had the resolve and capacity to defeat enemies of the state.

“Nigeria is a great nation. United and resilient, we will overcome our challenges and secure a prosperous future,” he said.

The minister paid tribute to fallen heroes who gave their lives in defence of the nation and commended serving personnel for their courage and professionalism.

He also recognised the sacrifices of families of deceased personnel, particularly widows, describing their resilience and patriotism as central to Nigeria’s national consciousness.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Mr Richard Pheelangwa, said the symposium was a solemn reminder that the true strength of a nation lies not only in weapons or strategy, but in sacrifice, shared values, collective memory, and unwavering commitment to national service.

Pheelangwa said the symposium was also a call to reflect on the ideals of unity, independence, and the future that every citizen was duty-bound to protect.

According to him, the resilience of any defence system is measured not merely by firepower, but by the quality of leadership, clarity of vision, and unity of purpose.

“As we engage in this symposium, we reaffirm our responsibility to Nigeria and to the global community to uphold peace, stability, and the highest standards of professionalism,” he said.

Why Nigeria’s healthcare system needs regulation – Toyin Lawani

Fashion designer Toyin Lawani has called for the regulation of Nigeria’s healthcare system following her bad experience with a Lagos-based hospital.

Lawani, on Instagram, alleged that she suffered complications from spine surgery due to negligence, stating that the hospital prioritises profit over patient care.

She advised Nigerians who can afford it to seek medical treatment abroad, citing concerns about the country’s healthcare standards.

“Nigeria’s health care system needs regulation. Anybody from abroad can have money and open a hospital in Nigeria as a business & do as they wish.

“Most of the doctors there are not even permanent doctors. They come to perform surgeries and go. If you have health issues in Nigeria, if you have your money, run ooooo,” she said.

Her call for reform follows similar allegations by author Chimamanda Adichie, who accused the Euracare hospital of negligence in her son’s death.

“But seeing @chimamanda_adichie’s story today triggered me to speak up so that so many people can be saved,” she added.

He cautioned individuals wishing him harm, declaring that such intentions would backfire.

“Fake Alpha and prophet, please don’t wish me dead. Everyone who wishes me dead will die in my place,” he said.

He added, “Close enemies, unknown enemies, enemies of my career, and the ones in my neighborhood, better don’t wish me dead, or you would die before me.”

2027: We’ll be living in a ‘fool’s paradise’ to think we can unseat Tinubu, says Ondo PDP chair

The chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Modupe Aisida, has said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains firmly in control of Nigeria’s political space, warning that it would amount to ‘living in a fool’s paradise’ for anyone to assume the President can be easily unseated ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during an interview on Friday in Akure, Aisida acknowledged Tinubu’s vast political experience, expansive network, and strong grip on power, noting that these factors continue to shape the country’s political dynamics.

He said no single political party can defeat President Tinubu in 2027, stressing that the incumbent enjoys the advantages of office, political structure, and deep-rooted influence, which place him in a strong position for re-election.

Aisida said opposition parties must form a broad-based alliance, anchored by the PDP, if they are serious about wresting power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) led by President Tinubu.

“Tinubu is the incumbent President, and he is on top of his game. Anybody thinking he can unseat him alone must be living in a fool’s paradise.

“There must be collaboration. The PDP has structures in every ward, local government, and across all states. Other opposition parties can come to us for such an alliance,” he said.

He, however, clarified that the PDP was not conceding defeat or abandoning its role as the main opposition party, but rather calling for realism, introspection, and strategic reorganisation.

“There is nothing bad in this. It happened in 1999. We have to be realistic. Everywhere in the world, incumbents enjoy enormous advantages.

“If people are deceiving themselves, I’m a realist. An incumbent will always have some advantages over the opposition. So, for the opposition to compete effectively and make a real impact, they must work together,” Aisida said.

He added that the opposition PDP would have fared better in the 2023 presidential election if it had formed alliances with other opposition parties.

The Ondo PDP chairman called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure fairness in its dealings with all political actors

He noted that credible elections would restore public confidence in the democratic process.

According to him, free and fair elections would eliminate unnecessary litigation and post-election protests while producing leaders who enjoy public legitimacy and support.

“Well-accepted elections will produce strong leadership that the people can be proud of and willing to support in policies and programmes,” he said.

  • Ekiti Assembly passes 31 bills in three years

Ekiti Assembly passes 31 bills in three years

The Ekiti State House of Assembly has passed 31 bills in the last three years, recording what has been described as a productive and impactful period for the Seventh Assembly.

The Speaker Adeoye Aribasoye said the Assembly in 2025 recorded remarkable progress in lawmaking, oversight, and constituency representation, adding that the achievements were a reflection of the lawmakers’ collective commitment to good governance.

Aribasoye assured residents that 2026 would usher in impactful legislation and goal-driven oversight and innovations, saying the Assembly remained focused on delivering people-oriented laws and stronger governance in 2026.

The Speaker said some of the landmark legislations passed in 2025 include the Ekiti State Local Content (Second Amendment) Law, which mandates the prioritisation of local businesses, artisans and workforce in government contracts, with at least 40 per cent of project execution reserved for Ekiti residents and resources.

Aribasoye also highlighted the Ekiti State Quality of Health Care Law, 2025, aimed at regulating the healthcare practice and curbing quackery across the state.

Other key laws passed include the Ekiti State Commercial Motorcycle Operators Regulatory Law, amendments to the Ekiti State Electoral Law and the Ekiti State Independent Electoral Commission Law, the Ekiti State College of Technology, Ijero-Ekiti Law, as well as the timely passage of 2026 Appropriation Law.

According to him, the Assembly also recorded a major milestone with the passage of the Ekiti State Revenue Administration Law, 2025, which has drawn commendation from the Joint Revenue Board for making Ekiti the first state to domesticate the harmonised tax and levy framework ahead of the 2026 fiscal year.

The Speaker said the legal framework would eliminate multiple taxation, curb unauthorised collections, block revenue leakages, and enhance the ease of doing business.

Aribasoye added that the Assembly’s performance was further reinforced by its emergence as the 2024 Best State Assembly in the ICT Integration Award winner from the Presidency.

The Speaker attributed the recognition to innovations such as live streaming of plenary sessions, digital voting, online television operations, and an upgraded website that enables public engagement

He added that the House is set to transition to a fully paperless legislative system and launch a parliamentary support mobile application in 2026.

Aribasoye commended his colleagues for their unwavering support, reaffirming the Seventh Assembly would sustain its reform drive and legislative productivity in the coming year.

  • INC, Fubara’s political family, rejects impeachment

INC, Fubara’s political family, rejects impeachment

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) and the political family of the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, have risen against the move by the state House of Assembly to remove the governor.

Also, the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) expressed dissatisfaction over the lingering disagreements between Fubara and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Nyesom Wike.

The Assembly on Thursday issued notice of allegations and gross misconduct to the governor and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, and gave them seven days to file their responses.

The impeachment rekindled the political crisis in the oil-rich state, which many people thought had ended after the state of emergency that lasted for six months.

The INC, in a statement signed by its President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, condemned the impeachment move, describing it as a grave threat to democracy, peace, and stability in Rivers State and the Niger Delta region.

“This is the third of such attempts since 2023, revealing a relentless cycle of political vendetta that must be broken.

We stand firmly with the people of Rivers State and all defenders of constitutional order in rejecting this dangerous gambit,” Okaba said.

He said the INC framed the crisis not merely as an Ijaw issue, but as a fundamental test for and threat to the country’s democracy, insisting that “it is not a matter of the Ijaw nation but of democracy”.

Okaba said, “The allegations presented by the Assembly, including matters of budgetary spending and gubernatorial appointments, are governance issues that can and must be resolved within the framework of law and due process, not through the weaponization of impeachment.

“This impeachment threat, no doubt, follows the collapse of a peace deal brokered by President Bola Tinubu in June 2025, aimed at resolving the feud between Governor Fubara and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

“The Assembly’s notice cites Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution. However, the speed and context of this process raise questions about its adherence to the spirit of fairness and its use as a political tool rather than a genuine check on executive power.

“The INC’s stance is also echoed by persons across the political spectrum, including within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, who have also called for the impeachment to be dropped.”

Okaba called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act decisively as the father of the nation, appealing to the President to uphold constitutional democracy by using his authority and office to defend the constitutional order in Rivers.

He urged the President to ensure absolute neutrality and fairness, adding that the peace and economic stability of the Niger Delta hinged on the federal government being perceived as an honest broker.

Okaba called on the President to curb all agents of instability and safeguard federal allocations to Rivers.

He said, “In this tense period, the INC urges and strongly advises all Ijaw people and residents of Rivers State to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and resolute. Do not be provoked into any action that could lead to violence or the destruction of property.

Okaba urged the stakeholders to stand for democratic principles by channeling their energies into peaceful civic engagement, support lawful advocacy and defend democratic institutions.

He said, “The legitimate development projects initiated by the state government must not be sacrificed on the altar of politics. We encourage all stakeholders to return to the path of genuine dialogue. The previous suspensions and state of emergency have not yielded lasting peace. Only an inclusive, good-faith dialogue can secure a sustainable future for the state.

Okaba rallied Ijaw people across the world to defend what he described as brotherhood in Rivers State and elsewhere in similar circumstances.

He said, “Ijaws and other ethnic nationalities and lovers of democracy globally must rise to the occasion now in defence of the Right of the PEOPLE, to good governance, orderliness and peaceful coexistence.

“The INC does passionately appeal and advise both the executive and the legistative arms of government in Rivers State to work together amicably and peacefully in the overall interest of the Masses in the State, who are, indeed, entitled to peace and development, and not self-destruction or anarchy

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will take all legitimate and constitutional steps necessary to ensure that the rights of the Ijaw people and all citizens of Rivers State are protected, and that democracy prevails over impunity.”

On Friday, Fubara’s political family under the auspices of the Supreme Council for Sim (SCS) condemned the impeachment move, saying it was illegal.

Speaking after an emergency meeting in Port Harcourt, the leader of the group, Amb. Oji Ngofa, insisted that the move was unconstitutional and that the reasons adduced for it lacked a constitutional basis.

Ngofa said, “Supreme Council for Sim outrightly rejects and condemns the purported impeachment move against the governor of Rivers State. We think that the move is unconstitutional and the reasons they have adduced for the impeachment have no legal basis.

“We all know that the governor transmitted the budget to the National Assembly which the fiscal life is still on. The Constitution allows for six months of grace into the New Year. We don’t understand why impeachment was raised against the governor on the basis of the budget. It amounts to playing dangerous politics with the destiny of the Rivers people.

“This state belongs to everyone, and as a group we have resolved today to resist any attempt to continue to take Rivers for a ride. The state belongs to everyone. We have the right to our collective patrimony as Rivers people.

“We feel that what is going on has continued long enough and continues to insult the sensibilities of the people. We are not seeing any expression of the interest of Rivers men in what they are doing. What we are seeing is the attempt to appropriate our collective resources for self-aggrandizement.

“The state wants to live in peace. We have analysed all the issues, and we believe the impeachment move is illegal. Members of the APC in the assembly have no right to endorse the move when they have not consulted internally to solve the problem.

“I am calling on our party to begin to take punitive measures against those APC lawmakers who endorsed the move. We will stand by the governor because we believe that the direction of Wike’s politics is not in the interest of Rivers people. They have not added any legislative value to the Rivers people.”
