Six teachers demoted in Oyo for exam malpractices

This was made known via a memo from the Oyo State Post Primary Schools Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), after it found the teachers culpable.

According to the letter, the teachers were involved in examination malpractices during the 2022 Senior School Certificate Examination, conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

  • Cleric urges govt to assess NTA traffic light

The General Overseer, Christ the Light Gospel Church Ministry (Inc), Ibadan, Bishop Solomon Aremu, has urged Oyo State Government to assess the recently installed traffic light at a junction linking the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) Agodi Gate, Ibadan to the Total Garden-Government House area.

Speaking in Ibadan at the church headquarters, he said the step became necessary to avert accidents.

Aremu narrated how he narrowly escaped death last Thursday after obeying the NTA Agodi traffic light.

The cleric, whose ministry is celebrating the 33rd anniversary, urged the state government to look at ways of averting such accidents in future.

He said: “It was simply by God’s grace that I survived the accident. The traffic light just installed at the NTA junction should be assessed, to avert accidents.

“Last Thursday, I nearly averted collision with a trailer that was ascending Total Garden-Gate road because of the traffic light. The trailer refused to stop for the traffic light. In fact, the light should be assessed, to avoid accidents.”

The clergyman, whose Toyota Forerunner Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) was badly damaged, thanked those that sympathised with him and prayed for him over the accident.

  • Akarigbo has vindicated Abiodun, says group

A group, Ogun Integrity Vanguard, has lauded a statement released by the Akarigbo of Remo, Oba Adewale Ajayi, clarifying that the trip he made to London with other traditional rulers to interface with billionaire lotto entrepreneur, Sir Kessington Adebutu, had nothing to do with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The group, which yesterday gave the commendation in a statement signed by its Secretary, Duro Thomas, and made available to reporters in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, said the foremost traditional ruler’s statement had put paid to the lie that the governor was seeking an out-of-court settlement with Adebutu’s son, Ladi, over the governorship election petition he (Ladi Adebutu) submitted challenging the governor’s victory during the March 18 governorship election in the state.

Saying it was unconscionable for mischief makers to seek to undermine the exalted throne of the Paramount Ruler of Remoland and President, Remo Traditional Council, and those of other Remo kings for political gain, the group added that Governor Abiodun remained fully focused on transforming the fortunes and enhancing the living standards of the Ogun populace, and would not be drawn into the political game meant to distract him front his renewed mandate.

Condemning the deliberate doctoring of the Akarigbo’s speech at the meeting with Sir Kessington to suit the intentions of the mischief makers and deceive unsuspecting members of the public, the group said: “Before the Akarigbo’s clarification through Adebayo Onafuwa, a lawyer, Bamofin of Remoland; mischief makers on the social media had claimed that Prince Abiodun was begging Ladi Adebutu to withdraw his petition challenging Governor Abiodun’s victory.

“However, as the Akarigbo said, ‘the insinuation that the trip was sponsored or was at the instance of the Governor was not only misleading, but also an insult to the Akarigbo in particular and the Remo Traditional Council in general; as this was never so’.

The group quoted the Akarigbo as saying that “the individual sponsorship by members of the entourage was made unambiguous in the address delivered in London and for anyone to try to smear the image of the top-notch personalities that made the trip on their own accord is most uncharitable.”

“Indeed, we agree with this royal submission. It is saddening that these individuals without conscience and lacking any shred of integrity sought to rubbish royalty, but the Akarigbo and other Remo obas have now shown those behind the fake news to be pure mischief makers.

“As the Akarigbo’s statement indicated, the Remo rulers as the custodian of the customs of the Remo people only felt concerned about the fallouts of the recent elections in Ogun State in which two of their sons from the same town (Iperu) vied for the governorship position and sought to hold peace talks with them in the interest of Remo Kingdom and Ogun State in general.

“Therefore, it is uncharitable to insinuate that the trip was sponsored by Governor Abiodun to placate those he defeated in an open contest. How could they insult our revered traditional rulers in this manner?

“We condemn the misrepresentation of facts by these mischief makers and warn them to cease and desist from dragging our exalted traditional rulers into their perverse politics.

“Seeking to draw Prince Abiodun into their vile game is an exercise in futility.”

  • Families to Makinde: don’t appoint new Alaafin until pending case is resolved

Families to Makinde: don’t appoint new Alaafin until pending case is resolved

Eleven families within Atiba lineage have urged Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to refrain from taking further action regarding the selection of the new Alaafin, until the pending case filed against the Chieftaincy Declaration of the Alaafin is resolved.

The families include: Prince Sina Afolabi-Adeitan Family, Prince Remi Azeez-Tella Okitipapa Family, Prince Lamola Olanite Family, Prince Agboin Adelabu Family, Prince Raji Adediran  Adeniran Family, Prince Nureni Taiwo-Tella Agbojulogun Family, Prince Muftau Adejare Adesokan-Adesokan Baba Idode Family, Prince Adesiyan-Adesiyan Family and Prince Bello Rasheed-Abidekun Family.

They said Makinde should follow due process in the selection of the new Alaafin.

Speaking in Oyo town on behalf of the nine families, Prince Afolabi Adesina from Adeitan Royal Family said resolving the pending case before appointing the new Alaafin is to ensure the process of selecting the new Alaafin is conducted in a transparent and just manner, as stipulated by the law, adding that It would be unfair to appoint a new Alaafin while a case is still pending.

Adesina said Makinde should recognise the significance of traditional institution and ensure fair and just process was followed in selecting the next monarch.

According to him, it is crucial that guidelines are adhered to, any decision regarding the appointment of Alaafin is made based on the provisions of declaration, which becomes imperative for the state government to maintain the status quo and respect the autonomy of traditional institution until the court case is resolved.

He said: “This will not only ensure a smooth transition process, but will also serve as a testament to the governor’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting justice and equity.

“It is essential that the governor should prioritise the resolution of the case before any action is taken with regard to the appointment of a new Alaafin. This will ensure the process is transparent, fair and just, as required by the law.

“It is time to put an end to the years of discrimination that have plagued the selection of the Alaafin of Oyo in the past. The nine Atiba children have been marginalised for too long, and it is only fair that they are given a chance to ascend the throne. We urge the governor to make history by selecting the new king from the nine Atiba children.

“As a government that values justice and equality, we implore the governor to act in the interest of the people and uphold the findings of the commission of enquiry into the stool of Alaafin.

“This will not only promote equity and fairness, but will also help to foster unity and inclusiveness in the community.”

“Meanwhile, operatives are already on the trail of the drug lord who shipped the illicit consignment into the country,” Babafemi said.

He said on the same day, NDLEA operatives intercepted a Toyota Sienna vehicle driven by one Mukaila Idowu, conveying 88.3kg skunk at Otedola bridge, Ikeja, Lagos, while another suspect, Joseph Friday was arrested on Saturday, May 6, at Iyana Ira, Lagos, with 58.7kg cannabis sativa concealed inside his Toyota Camry car marked FST587FH.

  • Hoodlums raze police station in Ebonyi

Hoodlums raze police station in Ebonyi

Hoodlums at the weekend burnt down the police station at Effium community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State as warring groups resumed hostilities.

The arsonists also attacked security agents deployed to the community as Peacekeeping force.

The Effium and Ezza Effium people in the community have been engaged in a three-year long war, which has left hundreds killed and thousands displaced.

Many houses and properties have been destroyed in the crisis that seemed to have defied all solutions as intermittent clashes usually broke out in spite of the peacekeeping troop ok ground.

The crisis re-ignited at the weekend which led to the burning of the police station.

Police spokesman in Ebonyi State, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident in a statement yesterday.

She denied reports that the policemen deployed to the area ran out of ammunition to counter the attacks.

Onovwakpoyeya noted that the Ezza warriors attacked the Effium communities but were repelled by the security agencies.

She said: “To set the record straight, there has been ongoing communal crisis between Ezza and Izzi communities for years.

“Consequently, the Army, Mobile Policemen, both visiting and state based, and conventional Policemen have been permanently stationed in the Crisis zone.

“However, for the past three consecutive days, the Ezza Warriors have launched an attack on Effium community and the security forces stationed in the zone.

“The forces had repelled them, but in the ensuing gun duel, the colonial building used as Police Station was razed down but no casualty on the part of the Police or loss of arms/ammunition.”

She said reinforcement had been sent to the area including arms/ammunition and a gun truck.

“The area is calm. The Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command, CP Faleye Olaleye, is using this medium to warn the aggressors to lay down their arms or face the full wrath of the law,” she added.
