Over one million infants vaccinated in Gombe, Jigawa

Over one million infants have been vaccinated in nine northern states since the conditional cash transfer for routine immunisation program began in 2021, it has been learnt.

The program, which was supported by the New Incentives – All Babies Are Equal (NI-ABAE), encouraged over 9.5 million vaccinations in Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Taraba, Adamawa and Zamfara states.

According to a statement by the State Ministries of Health and State Primary Health Care Development Agencies (SPHCDA) of Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Adamawa and Taraba states, after their fifth bi-annual joint stakeholder meeting, said the partnership helped to improve demand generation for routine immunisation and other supply-side supports for the routine immunization system.

It reads: “The All Babies program encourages each round of vaccines included in Nigeria’s Routine Immunisation schedule. Small cash incentives are disbursed to beneficiaries during each of the six routine immunisation visits, conditional on infants receiving BCG (newborn), PENTA, and PCV (6, 10, and 14 weeks); and MCV vaccines (9 and 15 months).

“Though these vaccines are the ones minimally required to receive the incentive, all vaccinations in the routine immunisation schedule are encouraged. The caregiver receives N500 for all visits except for the nine and 15th month visits, where the incentive is N2,000 upon receiving MCV 1, and N1,000 upon receiving MCV 2.

“These vaccinations are provided at no cost to the caregiver through government-supported clinics. The cash incentives help compensate for transportation costs, lost income, and waiting time, while creating behavioral change through awareness creation on the benefits of immunisations.

“Since the beginning in January 2021, the All Babies program has enrolled over 1 million infants, encouraged over 9.5 million vaccinations, and disbursed N2.3 billion to caregivers, thanks to the collaboration of staff at over 4,000 government clinics in 124 local government areas.

“In 109 of these councils, the All Babies program operates in nearly all government clinics. An independent randomised control trial of the All Babies program (2017-2020), found that the program increases the likelihood that children would be fully immunised by 27 per cent and increases rates of individual vaccinations by 14 to 21 per cent.

“In 2023, NI-ABAE plans to work with state partners to expand the program to 11 states throughout northern Nigeria, and enroll 1.5 million infants throughout the year.”

  • Senate president: Diaspora group hails Tinubu, APC for supporting Akpabio

Senate president: Diaspora group hails Tinubu, APC for supporting Akpabio

    • ACF kicks

A group, Diaspora Support Network, has commended the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for supporting Senator Godswill Akpabio for president of the 10th Senate.

Convener of the group Paul Manner, via Zoom from his base in the United States of America, noted that Akpabio was preferred because of his development and pan-Nigerian credentials.

According to Manner, members of Diaspora Network drawn from Africa, the USA, Europe and Australia agreed at a virtual meeting to endorse Akpabio as Senate President.

He said: “We recall that as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Godswill Akpabio unleashed uncommon transformation on the state through infrastructural renaissance of world standard and human capital development, which earned him the nickname as the one who turned boys into men.

“Courtesy of Akpabio, Akwa Ibom today has probably the best road network in Nigeria. His free and compulsory education policy backed by strong legal framework completely eradicated the houseboy/housegirl syndrome among Akwa Ibom children.

“Whether as the Minority Leader of the eighth Senate or the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Akpabio had demonstrated uncommon passion and love towards the development of Nigeria. We, in the Diaspora, have no doubt that as the President of the 10th Senate, he would bring his vast legislative and political experience to bear on the development of Nigeria through legislation and oversight…”

But the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has dissociated itself from Akpabio’s endorsement by a Coalition of Northern groups.

A statement yesterday by a leader of the Arewa Community in Southern Nigeria, Musa Saidu, said endorsing Akpabio for the Senate President would spell doom for Northern Nigeria.

He said: “We hereby dissociate ourselves from the endorsement of Senator Godswill Akpabio for the Senate President by a coalition of Northern groups. The coalition is not speaking for the North but for itself.

“No true Northern group will want to endorse Akpabio for a sensitive position like that because he is not friendly with the North. We are the people who know Akpabio, because we are resident in the South, we know those who are friendly with the Northern people and Akpabio is not one of them.”

Saidu added that the coalition must have made the endorsement out of ignorance.

“I want to condemn the endorsement because it was done in ignorance. It is also possible that the groups were given some inducement to endorse Akpabio. I want to say that the Northern people are not beggars who will be endorsing people who are not friendly with them because of inducement.

“Why should the All Progressives Congress (APC) be bent on zoning the position to the South when we have competence hands in the North? The North-West gave the APC the largest votes in the February 25 presidential election, why not consider somebody from the zone?

“I think it’s time for the party to reward the zone for the massive votes rather than start looking for somebody from the South as Senate President,” he added.

Wike: INEC conducted better elections in 2023

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has urged the people to praise the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting elections with reduced violence and deaths in 2023.
Wike recalled how previous elections under INEC were marred by violence and avoidable deaths, following the desperation of politicians to have their ways.
A statement by his media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, said the governor spoke when he inaugurated members of the Rivers State Healthcare Management Board, and Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), at the Government House in Port Harcourt yesterday.
The governor noted that even if the Bimodal Voter Accreditation Machine System (BVAS) used by INEC in the 2023 election did not perform optimally, many successes were achieved because ‘its use alone frustrated the possibility of violence’.
The RSIEC is chaired by Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), with members including Prof. Emenike Weli; Adolphus. A. Brown; Dr. Lasbury Nnah; Pastor Tamunotonye Tobins; Mrs. Chinwe Ihua-Maduenyi and Mrs. Nuka Kponi.
Prof. Blessing Jaja chairs the Rivers State Healthcare Management Board, Dr Kinikanwo Green (Executive Director) and memebrs are Dr Clarabell Abam, Mrs. Gladys Horsefall-Okafor, Madam Gladys Ihunda and Dr Famba O. Famba.
Governor Wike noted that no election was perfect, but it was always better that subsequent ones be seen to be an improvement, to make people believe in the process.
He said: “That is why I tell people that if for nothing, Nigerians should commend INEC for reducing the level of violence and death through the BVAS. Before now we were fighting with security agencies, there was snatching of electoral materials and kidnap of electoral officials, but now it is different…”
The governor hoped the Federal Government would increase the capacity of INEC to do better in the next election.
Wike also admonished the RSIEC members to use their experience to ensure a successful transition in subsequent local government elections. He urged them to work as a team to achieve their given mandate in the elections scheduled for next year.
He urged the Healthcare Management Board to build on success of the previous board which performed well.

  • NAFDAC to ban, phase out selected pesticides

NAFDAC to ban, phase out selected pesticides

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has begun the process of phasing out and banning certain harmful pesticides.

It stated that while pesticides are applied both indoors and outdoors for the management of pests, vector-borne diseases, and for crop protection, the dangers posed are immense if the toxicity is not properly managed.

The agency added that a report by Heinrich Boll Foundation claimed that 40 per cent of pesticides used in Nigeria had been banned in the European Union (EU).

A statement by NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, necessitated a stakeholders’ engagement to review and analyse the list of registered pesticide and agrochemical active ingredients in the NAFDAC Registered Product Automated Database (NARPAD) vis-à-vis active, banned, non-approved or restricted in the EU, other countries or by relevant international organizations.

The statement reads: “NAFDAC to intensify Post Marketing Surveillance nationwide. Pesticide and agrochemical importers and manufacturers would be advised to institute stewardship plans (such as Post Marketing Surveillance and research) in their companies. NAFDAC to collaborate with research institutes in the conduct of research and scientific data generation on pesticides to enable it make evidence-based decisions and policies.

“NAFDAC to engage sister agencies (Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency, Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service), to ensure synergy in the regulation of pesticide and agrochemical products.

“In addition to the ban of Paraquat, Chlorpyrifos, and Atrazine with effective dates from January 1, 2024, November 1, 2024, and January 1, 2025, NAFDAC has also initiated the action plan for the ban/phase-out of 12 active ingredients and the reclassification of four others. The availability of alternatives were considered to ensure stakeholders, most especially farmers, will not be affected by the decisions taken.”

  • Hospital refutes claim student doctor ‘butchered’ patient

Hospital refutes claim student doctor ‘butchered’ patient

The Edo State Specialist Hospital, Benin City, has dismissed a claim by an aggrieved husband,  Mr. Sunday Oghogho, that a student doctor ‘butchered’ his late wife at the facility, saying all surgeries in the hospital are conducted by competent specialist doctors.

It said, in a statement, that the rebuttal followed Oghogho’s allegation that the hospital was liable for the woman’s death.

Oghogho had claimed, among others, that he received a phone call from the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. on April 18 that his attention was needed at the hospital in respect of his wife’s death.

He alleged in a Facebook post that when he got to the hospital with some of his family members, they met the CMD and eight other doctors of the hospital who apologised to him and his family and admitted that they had discovered that it was a student doctor who operated on his wife.

But denying this claim, the hospital’s statement reads:“The attention of the management of Edo Specialist Hospital, Benin City has been drawn to a publication on Facebook Titled: ‘How A Student Doctor ‘Butchered’ My Wife to Death at the Edo Specialist Hospital.

“We empathize and condole with the family of Mr. Sunday Oghogho over the painful loss of his wife following complications of childbirth.

“As providers in the healthcare space we have sworn to preserve life and it is therefore painful for us whenever we lose a patient irrespective of the circumstances.

“We are bound to the oath of confidentiality and medical ethics regarding the records of patients we manage even after death but the level of falsehood contained in the above-mentioned write-up has made it imperative for us to provide clarifications limiting ourselves to the issues already placed in the public domain by the husband.”

It said full details of her care are contained in her medical records which remain confidential except otherwise required by competent authorities.

It added: “The hospital management had earlier received a report of an aggrieved patient relation, Mr. Sunday Oghogho, who needed further clarification on the management of the wife and subsequently invited him for a meeting with some members of the multidisciplinary team that provided care for the patient in attendance.

“After this meeting, Mr. Sunday Oghogho expressed his dissatisfaction with all the clarifications provided. He made some ludicrous demands in an attempt to get the hospital to accept responsibility for the death of the patient, which the management turned down as there was no basis to accept such responsibility.”

The hospital said this appeared to have given rise to Oghogho’s social media post.

It added: “Furthermore, we wish to posit that all surgeries in Edo Specialist Hospital are conducted by competent specialist doctors. Specifically, the surgery was conducted by a consultant obstetrician and subsequently, the patient was co-managed by a multidisciplinary team of Obstetricians, Hematologist, Anesthesiologist and Nephrologist in the Intensive Care Unit.”

The hospital refuted the allegation of butchery.

It said: “Thus the allegation that a student doctor butchered the wife is completely false. The attempt of Mr. Sunday Oghogo to also malign through his exaggerated report laced with falsehood, the CMD is also preposterous.

“The management understands that it is painful when one loses a loved one. We sincerely sympathize and empathize with Mr. Sunday Oghogho and his family on the death of his wife.

“We also use this medium to assure the public that Edo Specialist Hospital remains committed to delivering excellent health care to all its patients at all times.’’
