Buhari approves N80b for Sapele/Benin, Amukpe/Agbor roads reconstruction

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the N80 billion for the reconstruction of the Sapele/Benin and Amukpe/Agbor/Uromi roads.

Deputy Senate President and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, stated this at a meeting with members of the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) in Sapele.

In a statement by Ima Niboro, Director, Communications and Media Strategy, Delta APC Campaign Council, Tuesday, Omo-Agege claimed that on the assumption of the office of the Deputy Senate President he reached out to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on the status of the highways but he was not forthcoming with the necessary information.

“He recalled that as soon as he became Deputy President of the Senate he requested from Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to know the status of the road all the way from Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) to Agbor.

“He said this was because he knew the contract had been awarded previously and hence requested for a review so he could put it in the Niger Delta Development Commission budget. He explained that because Okowa felt he would not get the political credit, the issue died.

“But recently, with the reconstitution of the NDDC board, President Buhari ordered that N500 billion naira of the Commission that was frozen be released for development projects and the sum of N80 billion was approved when he pleaded with the President to consider the Sapele/Benin Road and the Amukpe/Agbor Road,” the statement said.

Omo-Agege said it would be insanity to continue to hold onto Okowa through his anointed proxy, who he alleged have collectively failed to develop Delta State.

“When I become Governor in May 29, 2023, I will not wait for the Federal Government before constructing strategic roads in Delta and ensuring the implementation of the local content law so as to provide job opportunities for our youths,” he said.

‘RCCG pastor found stabbed, coughing blood’

A Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square Tuesday heard that a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) pastor, Babatunde Dada, was found coughing blood after being stabbed and robbed allegedly by two teenagers that he helped off the streets and gave accommodation after getting them a job.

The teens, Farouk Mohammed, 16, and Kasali Jamiu, 19, said to be new converts to Christianity at the church branch in Festac where the pastor worked, are standing trial for the December 2, 2021 murder of Dada, 46, before Justice Sherifat Sonaike.

Mohammed and Jamiu were remanded following their arraignment before the judge by the Lagos State Government.

The duo was first charged on January 12, 2022 before a Yaba Chief Magistrate’s Court alongside two others, Mumuni Toheeb, 21, and Mubarak Soliu, 20, for allegedly receiving a Spark S Techno phone valued at N60,000, property of the deceased.

At the resumption of proceedings, the deceased’s younger brother, Michael Dada, was led in evidence before the court by the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Dr. Babajide Martins.

The witness, who affirmed that Dada was a pastor at RCCG Resurrection Chapel on 6th Avenue, Festac Town, Lagos, narrated how his brother was found after the stabbing.

“On the 2nd of December 2021, I received a call from my younger sister, Oluwakemi Dada who lived with my deceased brother. She was screaming on the phone, that my brother was lying in a pool of blood in the church.

“Before getting to the church, she called me back that my brother had been taken to Navy Town Hospital where they took the body. There I found him already confirmed dead,” Michael said.

When he asked his sister what happened, “she told me that there were two strange boys working with them whom the church had accommodated.

“According to her, when she interrogated my deceased brother about them, he said they were new converts and the church had accommodated them on the church premises. He said he didn’t want the two boys to be stranded or roaming around the church premises so decided to engage them in his laundry business.

“The boys started working with him and were going to be paid. According to my sister Oluwakemi, on that fateful day, my deceased brother told her and the other laundry workers he was going to the bank and that he would be back.

“She said when he came back, he went upstairs in the church to go and rest. After a while, she wondered why he had not come down after resting for quite sometime. One of the laundry workers went upstairs to pick a cloth to wash. On getting there, he screamed. I asked my sister why they were not listening. They said the generator was on.

“The worker screamed and called the rest. They all met the pastor in a pool of blood and he was coughing up blood. They noticed that the two strange boys, Farouk and Jamiu were not there.”

Michael said he asked about the deceased’s phone but it was nowhere to be found and some of the deceased’s belongings.

“I quickly got in contact with the pastor in charge, he continued by then the news had spread. Later in the day, the pastor in charge and his wife came to confirm his body at the Navy Town Hospital. The matter was reported to Festac Police Station.”

Appeal Court affirms Ajayi as PDP candidate for Ondo South

The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure has affirmed former Ondo Deputy Governor Chief Agboola Ajayi as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Ondo South senatorial district.

It threw out the appeal filed by Senator Nicholas Tofowomo.

Senator Tofowomo had appealed a judgement of a Federal High Court which dismissed his suit for failure to file within the stipulated time.

Ajayi polled 78 votes to defeat Senator Tofowomo who garnered 74 votes at the PDP primary

But Tofowomo, in his suit, urged the court to declare him as the party’s candidate on the grounds that Ajayi committed acts of perjury.

But Ajayi, through his lawyer, Prof Kayode Olatoke SAN argued that the allegation of perjury against him was unfounded and argued that the case was filed outside the time allowed by law.

Justice Rilwanu Aikawa of the Federal High Court, Akure, who dismissed Tofowomo’s suit for being filed out of time said the suit was statue barred.

Dissatisfied with the ruling, Senator Tofowomo, asked the appellate court to order for retrial of the case saying the merit should take preeminence instead of technicalities employed by the lower court.

In his ruling on the appeal filed by Senator Tofowomo, Justice Ayobode Olujimi Lokulo-Sodipe, affirmed the judgment of the lower court.

Justice Ayobode stated that the suit could not be heard on merit because the electoral act, practice direction and constitution stipulated the time within which such a suit should be filed.

The appellate court held that the failure of the Tofowomo to key into the period stipulated by the law, which was clearly 14 days after the cause of action made the case and the appeal nugatory.

He dismissed the appeal with N250, 000 fine against Tofowomo.
