Qatar 2022: Croatia win sends Canada home

Bayern Munich winger Davies’ second-minute opener gave Canada hope, but they ended up second best and have suffered back-to-back defeats in their first two group matches.
In Group F’s earlier game, Morocco shocked world number two side Belgium 2-0 and are second in the standings, behind 2018 finalists Croatia.
John Herdman’s outsiders scored from the game’s first attack after only 67 seconds courtesy of a towering header from Davies, who darted into the box and powerfully converted from Tajon Buchanan’s cross.
Croatia, though, did not panic after falling behind and created numerous chances, with striker Andrej Kramaric seeing a goal ruled out for offside.

But the former Leicester player then equalised with a first-time angled shot from Ivan Perisic’s pass, and Marko Livaja put them ahead with a rasping drive from the edge of the box.
Kramaric was denied by Milan Borjan’s fine save in the second half and at the other end, Dominik Livakovic acrobatically tipped over Jonathan David’s long-range curler.
Hoffenheim frontman Kramaric got his second of the game by coolly converting into the far corner, and substitute Lovro Majer wrapped up the match by netting in injury time. BBC
  • Abuja-Kaduna train service resumes in a week- FG

Abuja-Kaduna train service resumes in a week- FG

The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo has said the suspended Abuja-Kaduna train service will resume in the next one week.

The train service was suspended after an attack by bandits on the rail facility on March 28, 2022.

The attack led to the death of some passengers with about 60 kidnapped while several others were injured.

The Minister at different fora said the train service would not resume until the kidnapped passengers were rescued and reunited with their families.

Following their rescue, the Minister while reeling out the scorecard of the ministry earlier in the month said the train service would resume in November.

Eight months after the attack, the Minister on Sunday embarked on an assessment tour of the rail infrastructure in preparation for resumption.

Contrary to the reports that the service would resume on Monday, the Minister during the inspection said the resumption would take a few more days.

He said the few days would enable passengers to prepare adequately and get familiar with the newly introduced security measures.

He also said passengers should expect an increase in ticket fares.

The Minister also said the number of trips has been reduced, adding that there will no longer be night trips.

In preparation for the resumption of the train operation, Sambo said: “I traveled from Idu to Rigasa to assess the state of readiness of train service between Abuja and Kaduna.

“Several measures have been put in place to ensure that lives and properties will be secured when we resume services and I am satisfied with what I have seen. Of course, there are one or two areas that need to be addressed and we are going to address them immediately.

“There are increased numbers of security personnel and without mincing words, some of the security personnel may not be in uniform to guarantee to safety of the traveling public.

“There are other sensitive measures that we have deployed which I will not reveal.

“Also, on every journey, the train is monitored every second on a screen and the train driver can see up to a certain distance if there is any threat on the track, that will enable him to match the brakes long before getting to the perceived threat.

“On the issue of whether the train service will start tomorrow or not, we have not said the train services will start tomorrow. I want to be very categorical about that.

“Now, we have introduced a new system whereby before you purchase a ticket, you will be required to provide a phone number and National Identification Number (NIN) for us to profile the passenger because that is the beginning of the security checks.

“So, at any point in time when a train moves from one station to another, we will know who and who is on board. If you don’t have NIN you are not going to board our train. It is as simple as that.

“If you are a minor, an adult will pay for you and will register for you and an adult can only register for not more than four minors.

“The NIN will take care of racketeering and it is one of the reasons we introduced it. Only one human is entitled to a NIN and I don’t see how one person will get multiple NINs. In any case, at the point of the departure lounge, the profile of the person will have to show and if it is not shown, you don’t get access. It is as simple as that. So, if you get 20 tickets, 19 will be useless and your money will be wasted.

“Now, we want to give sufficient time for the Nigerian public to listen to these and assimilate this new system because if we start tomorrow, a lot of people will be disgruntled. They will ask; why didn’t they tell us? Is this the new way of doing it? Why didn’t they give us adequate time to do it? So we want to give adequate time. Definitely between three, four, five days, certainly not more than a week.”

On the security measures put in place to ensure real-time monitoring of the rail infrastructure, the Minister said: “That has been put in place, but we are not going to tell you what we have done. It is a security matter and I have no apologies for that.”

On the number of trips and increase in fares, he said: The number of trips will be reduced. Naturally, you should expect that a certain number of passengers will not be comfortable boarding the train for obvious reasons.

“We are human beings, we are bound to feel a little bit uncomfortable until we can see that every security measure has been put in place. So, we will reduce the number of trips and as the traveling population picks up, we will increase the number of trips but we will certainly not travel at night for now.

“Please, expect an increase in fares. I am having final consultation with the management of NRC and the management of the ministry to see whether it will be immediate or we will take a little time.

“We all know that prices of things have gone up, even airfares have gone up and we have not heard anybody cry about it. Why is it that it’s only when it is train fares that people are reactive? I can assure you that the poor masses will be taken care of and considered because we are a very sensitive government.

On assurance that there won’t be a repeat of the attack, he said: “The only person that can give you that assurance is the Almighty God. But, having said that, I will tell you that whatever is humanly possible to secure the lives of the users of this service have been put in place and we will continue to upgrade it. We will be monitoring it daily and improve on whatever or wherever we find some snags.”

Morocco caused the latest shock at a World Cup that has been full of surprises by beating Belgium thanks to late goals by Abdelhamid Sabiri and Zakaria Aboukhlal.

That sparked wild celebrations in the stands of Al Thumama Stadium from thousands of Morocco fans, who had created a raucous atmosphere from the start.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has warned Fund Managers still in the habit of holding on to clients’ funds and securities to desist from such act or face the wrath of the apex regulator.

This, he said, involves having a centralized submission of E-dividend mandate forms, Application Programming Interface (API) for Banks and Registrars, and a revamped web interface among others.

  • Ndigbo lacking credible leaders – Bianca

Ndigbo lacking credible leaders – Bianca

Bianca, wife of the late Igbo warlord, Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, has said that there are no more credible leaders in Igboland.

Bianca, who spoke at the 11th edition of Dim Ojukwu Memorial Day on Saturday in Owerri, the Imo State capital, noted since the death of Dim Ojukwu, Ndigbo has been lacking credible leaders who would speak for them.

“Until 2023 we will remember that power has fallen when Dim Ojukwu died. We miss him particularly in Igboland. Why do we miss him? It is because in Igboland today we have deficit of credible leaders. What we have today in Igboland are men who are not men.

“What we have today is one man down, one less competitor. That is why what is happening today in the country we don’t have men who can stand up to speak for Ndigbo,” she said.

She also decried the killings in Igboland.

“At no time of the history of our people do we have the type of criminalities and criminals as we see on daily basis in Igboland. Even during the war, we never heard or seen that people came out with knives to slice the throat and neck of another human being with pride.

“This is what we are seeing and why are we seeing it? We are seeing it because the general perception of not only the Igbo youths but entirety of Nigeria youths is that Nigeria has become a crematorium of dreams. That Nigeria has become a premature restive place of hopes and aspirations and the youths look around and see nothing but wasteland.

“Come to the Southeast, there is today lack of Federal presence, no industries. So how can you earn a legitimate living when the system has completely collapsed.

“We are suffering a total system failure in economy, security, when a government can no longer guarantee lives and safety on the property and investments of the citizens.”

Mrs Ojukwu also called on the Federal Government to immediately release IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, adding that no nation stifles the dreams of its citizens and expect peace.

“I call for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.and I do so firmly convinced that no Nation can hold its people hostage and have peace, it is impossible because peace is freedom and also no nation can hold the dreams of its citizens to ransome and prosper,” she stressed.

She commended the efforts of Leader of MASSOB/BIM Chief Ralph Uwazuruike for keeping the Ojukwu memorial Day alive.

Thousands of MASSOB/BIM supporters stormed Owerri on Saturday to celebrate 11th edition of Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu’s Memorial Day.

As early as 8am thousands of MASSOB/BIM supporters from different parts of Southeast and South South regions came with their cultural troupes to mark the 11th anniversary of Dim Ojukwu memorial day which started in 2012.
