  • Why Amaechi’s aircraft was delayed- NAMA

The Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has explained why the takeoff of the Global Express aircraft operated by the Rivers State Government was delayed at the Akure Airport on Friday.

The agency said the aircraft was delayed due to failure on the part of the crew to submit declaration, which includes passengers’ manifest to be submitted with the flight plan.

According to the Managing Director of NAMA, Engineer Nnamdi Udoh, the submission of a declaration, which includes a passenger’s manifest, is part of mandatory requirements by aviation agencies for operators of non scheduled flight including charter operations.

He explained that for Akure Airport, which only carries out daylight flights, there are restrictions on operations that extend beyond the approved time, which would require approval from authorities concerned.

The statement  issued by the NAMA boss on the incident stated as follows :” You are all aware of the incident involving the Governor of Rivers State, Hon Rotimi Amaechi alleging that his aircraft was grounded to take from the airport in reference.

“The aircraft the governor came with is with registration number 5N565RS- Global Express. The pilot called for air traffic controllers clearance at 6.35 pm, he got clearance same time and started taxing by 6.45 pm and departed 6.51 pm.

“By regulations the manager has no power of his own to clear any aircraft at this period, except an approval given from the authorities concerned.

After due clearance and the provision of the needed logistics, the aircraft in reference was cleared for takeoff.

“But, we need to stress this that we operate by rules and regulations.

Aviation is not political and we do not play politics in this industry. We appeal that pilots and operators should comply with the operating rules at all the airports in the country.”

  • Where is Emmanuel?

A two-year relationship between a U.K based Nigerian,  one Emmanuel Adebanjo and a Caribbean lady which was supposed to end in marriage in June this year has ended abruptly with the whereabouts of the prospective groom  unknown after a visit to the country. Lekan Otufodunrin reports

Initially it was supposed to be a case of a fiance missing in transit. Rachael from a Caribbean Island whose Nigerian fiance, one Emmanuel Adebanjo traveled home to Nigeria from his United Kingdom base to see his mother suddenly became incommunicado.

The last time she heard from Emmanuel who she usually communicates with every day before his sudden disappearance was in February. All her attempts to contact Emmanuel who she was supposed to get married to in June this year after two years of courtship failed.  “I had a phone number for which just rings without anyone responding,” she recalls.

Just when she began to panic about Emmanuel’s fate, she started getting messages from some ‘relatives’ of her husband to be claiming that Emmanuel was involved in an accident a day after he arrived Nigeria and he was the sole survivors.

The ‘cousins’ refused  to give Rachael the name of the hospital where Emmanuel was being treated and other information to locate or speak with him because they said she was not yet known to the family. They claimed they were trying to raise money for Emmanuel’s treatment after selling some of his property and asked how Rachael was willing to assist them.

In an email to Rachael  the cousins wrote “Hello madam, you have to be patient until we can get back to you… We have not told his Mother about what happened to Emmanuel because she will be so devastated with shock and only close family members are informed.

“We are making arrangement for him to be flown back to UK but the financial side of it is yet to be concluded. You have not visited Nigeria before hence No member of the family knows nor ever seen you before. So we cannot release him to your care. Our hope lies on the fact that the moment he is able to get better we will ensure he speak with you and he will decide if he will come direct to you or to UK. have a blessed week and god bless you. Kunle.”

Although she had reasons to suspect that the cousins may be trying to scam her, Rachael  found it difficult to believe that Emmanuel could be part of the scheme.

“I know him well, my family, he has nothing to gain by trying to scam me because he knows I am not a rich person”

In her search for information on Emmanuel’s whereabouts, Rachael reached out on phone to someone he had introduced to her as an uncle in Nigeria. In their first telephone conversation, the uncle said he had not heard from Emmanuel for some time and was not aware if he was involved in any accident since he is not sure he was in Nigeria.

The only home address Rachael  had for Emmanuel in Nigeria, was  41-43 Ashabi Cole, Agidingbi Road, Ikeja, Lagos was not found by our reporter. The street was non- residential.

Much later when Rachael told the uncle she was going to hire a private investigator to fish out Emmanuel, he called the following day to say that Emmanuel was in the UK and had an accident, was not working, had no job and was embarrassed of his situation and could not face her.

With the hide and seek now over and Emmanuel still incommunicado, Rachael, family members and friends are shocked at the turn of events.

“This is a man who was coming back and forth to our country over a period of two years- something is still amiss to me here- while here he met my family, friends, boss, church priest, etc helped my children paint the house, and more- he was a very mild mannered, polite, calm, but always on the computer- I wonder if his resume was in fact legit- it was very long and detailed- should have had a job easily with that.

“Everyone of my friends are shocked, the men who met him tell me they are depressed because they all can’t believe it. It is not a regular thing for us

here to run into this type of thing or people. All I can say that he is lucky my father is not alive. He had a lot of contacts I am not sure if Emmanuel would have been able to hide from him,“ Rachael said.

Rachael and Emmanuel had known each other through a Nigerian for about two years and he usually visits the Island from his U.K base staying about a month each time.

According to Rechael, “when he came here it was not to do anything but to get to know one another better- you cannot have a long distance relationship with someone unless someone goes to visit the other person often before taking it to the next step.

“I thought it better for him to come here around my people to check him out- and they all thought he was a great person- who knows- so when he came here we went to the beach swimming, concerts, movies, church, family get- together, he even went to my class to help me get ready for the beginning of the school year in Sept- I mean he just fit in with everyone.”

For now there has been no word from Emmanuel or his uncle and cousin.

“I have not heard a peep from anyone- but I can see someone coming and going  off line on Yahoo Messenger but they have not made any further contact and  neither have I. It is almost as if he has dropped off the face of the earth- or so he wants me to think.”

The chain of events still seems like a bad dream for Rachael but she is glad she didn’t get married to Emmanuel before finding out about his true identity.

“We live and learn – but suppose we had married?  He would then have had access to much more than he would by this act, so I appreciate God spared me that. Always look for the silver lining in any situation,” Rachael said.

  • UTME centres not changed – JAMB

UTME centres not changed – JAMB

Contrary to speculations that some centres have been changed ahead of this Saturday’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME),  the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said no such alterations have been made.

Some candidates have received emails claiming that their centres have been changed and  should reprint their photo cards online.
When contacted for confirmation JAMB’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Fabian Benjamin said centres assigned when candidates registered for the Paper and Pencil Test (PPT) option examination remain the same.

However, he said the only change that has been made is the date of the Computer-Based Test (CBT), from April 18-May 5 to between May 18 and June 1 because the former clashed with the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the NECO version.

He said CBT candidates have been directed to reprint their photocards to reflect the adjusted date.
“We did not change any centre. We only rescheduled the dates for the CBT to May 18 because the initial date was clashing with the WAEC and NECO exams. We have sent SMS to CBT candidates to reprint their documents to reflect the new date,” he said

  • Minister urges girls to embrace ICT career

Minister urges girls to embrace ICT career

The Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, has urged  girls to embrace careers in Information Communications Technology (ICT) to bridge the career gap between the male and female gender in ICT.
Mrs Johnson who made this call at a ministerial programme to celebrate the Girls in ICT Day in Abuja in line with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) global advocacy to get more girls into ICT, stressed that despite the advances recorded in ICT globally, there are not many women in ICT due to the perception that it’s for geeks’ or for males.
The Minister added that the Ministry is encouraging girls to come into ICT in order to erase that perception.
‘’When I was studying engineering I was one of five girls in a class of about 80. My daughter has just graduated in an engineering degree and she was also one of about five or six girls, so nothing has really changed in 30 years, ’’ Johnson noted.
She decried the fact that despite the growing advocacy for women to embrace technology across the globe, nothing has really changed and many women are still not embracing the power of technology.
‘’We need to ask ourselves why and help remove all the barriers militating against girls and women embracing technology. Some of the barriers limiting women has to do with lack of support and encouragement and the Ministry will provide the necessary support by encouraging women to embrace careers in ICTs,’’ she stated.
The International Telecommunications Union ITU in 2010 set aside the fourth Thursday of April every year for the celebration of Girls in ICT. The Girls in ICT Day is an international initiative, backed by ITU Member States in Plenipotentiary Resolution 70 (Guadalajara, 2010), to create a global environment that empowers and encourages girls and young women to consider careers in ICT.
A statement made available by the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister, Efem Nkanga disclosed that the Minister invited the best girls in Sciences in their various schools to the one week programme of the Ministry in order to encourage and expose them to do more in sciences and increase the percentage of women and girls in ICTs.
The girls during  the one week programme were exposed to the power of technology and its impact on development. They met with several female engineers and interacted with many role models during the duration of the programme that increased their enthusiasm for the ICT profession.Earlier, the permanent Secretary Dr Henry Akpan had flagged off the programme by encouraging the girls to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the Ministry as they commenced the programme to celebrate ‘’Girls in ICT Day to learn and excel.
In his closing remarks, the Director Planning and Research, Mr Wole Edun on behalf of the  Minister and the Permanent Secretary thanked the students , teachers and the various schools represented for taking time out to grace the programme.
The programme was well attended by the management and staff of the Ministry, representatives of the Nigerian Communications Commission, the Managing Director of NITEL, Hajia Zainab iiyasu-Saab, teachers and students of various schools in Abuja

Having received preliminary briefings from the Military High Command on the incident, President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered a full-scale investigation into reports of high civilian casualties in the confrontation between Nigerian soldiers and insurgents at Baga in Borno State at the weekend.

About 185 persons including women and children were over the weekend  reportedly killed during a shoot out between mend of the Joint Task Force and Boko Harm insurgents. The victims died of gun shots during the face-off  and fire which  burnt major parts of the town.

Presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, in a statement noted that  the preliminary briefings indicate that the casualty figures being reported by the foreign media may be grossly exaggerated but said  President Jonathan has  assured Nigerians and the global community that the Federal Government  places the highest possible value on the lives of all citizens of the country.

He said the  administration will continue to do everything possible to avoid the killing or injuring of innocent bystanders in security operations against terrorists and insurgents.

“Rules of engagement for the military and security agencies are already in place for this purpose and the investigation ordered by President Jonathan into the incident in Baga is to amongst other things, determine whether or not these rules were fully complied with.

He commiserates with all those who have regrettably lost their lives in the fighting, including the soldiers who gallantly made the supreme sacrifice in the operation against terrorism, insurgency and insecurity in Nigeria.

“The President is deeply pained by the continuance of these needless deaths and will continue to do all within his powers to achieve lasting peace, security and stability in all parts of the country.
