  • Jonathan greets Olubadan at 99

    President Goodluck Jonathan has felicitated with the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Samuel Odulana on his  99th birthday.

    In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, Reuben Abati, the president noted that “Oba Odulana has deployed his immense experience, knowledge and wisdom for the great benefit of his people since his assumption of the ancient throne of Ibadanland.”

    He prayed that God  who has already blessed the Olubadan with such extraordinary longevity will grant him many more years of good health and commendable service to his community and the nation.

    “President Jonathan joins the people of Ibadan and the Olubadan’s friends and well-wishers across the country in looking forward with great anticipation to Oba Odulana’s historic attainment of the age of 100 years next year.”

    “The President assures Oba Odulana and the people of Ibadan of the Federal Government’s full support for the celebrations being planned to commemorate the landmark occasion which fortuitously coincides with Nigeria’s centenary year celebrations, ”  Abati stated

  • Body of Lagos river accident victim recovered

    The body of the occupant of a Hilux van that plunged into Majidun River in Ikorodu area of Lagos state on Saturday has been recovered.

    The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu who confirmed this to journalists on Sunday also revealed that only one person was in the vehicle  at the time of the accident.

    He said four staff of Ikoyi Club left their office that morning in the vehicle, adding that three of the passenger alighted at Palmgrove bus stop while the deceased who was heading to Ikorodu drove alone in the vehicle until the accident occurred at Majidun River.

    According to him, “The recovery operation continue today and the body of the lone occupant  of the vehicle  have been recovered.”

    “The other three occupants that are the colleagues of the deceased were dropped at palmgroove bus stop before the car they were driving in was involved in a fatal accident.”

    Oke-Osanyintolu said the recovered  body has been deposited in a mortuary.

    The deceased had drove in a  Van with registration number KSF 918 AU belonging to Ikoyi  club.

    Anger, tears, confusion as 51 accident victims get mass burial

    Fifty-one victims of the recent  Ugbogui road accident in Edo State were on Saturday interred at a mass burial at first cemetery in the state capital, Benin.

    They were burnt to death in the accident that occurred on April 5th at Ugbogui village along the  Benin-Ore-Lagos road.

    The accident involved a tanker, a trailer and a luxury bus.

    It was the tanker that exploded after the trailer hit it from behind.

    Several other vehicles parked along the road including motor-cycles and properties worth millions in shops along the road were burnt.

    Two brothers who were sleeping in their mother’s shop were also victims.

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had said that 36 persons died in the accident but the mortician at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Aikoriogie Wilfred said 51 bodies were brought to the hospital.

    He said he did all he could to preserve the body, adding that the victims could not be identified.

    Families of the victims were incensed when official of the FRSC informed them that death certificates would be issued to the 36 names on the manifest provided by the transport company.

    They argued that many of the victims did not include their names in the manifest.

    Eugene Odiamah said his mother, a nephew and niece died in the accident but that only the name of their mother appeared on the manifest.

    Kevin Aniekwe said he lost his wife and two daughters in the accident.

    “It is very painful. I spoke with them before they left that day. The Lord is now my strength. I know I will see them again.”

    “They were going to see their grandmother in Enugu.”It was gathered that the driver of the vehicle took passengers of another bus that broke down along the way.

    The corpses were taken from the UBTH morgue at about 8:30am and were loaded in a truck.

    At the cemetery, a brief service was held for the victims and led by Pastor Barnabas Chukwukere.

    Pastor Chukwukere urged the families to believe in the Lord and continue to serve him as death could occurred at any time.

    According to him, “Remember now the Lord your creator. Leave your life as if it is the end. We are nothing but sand.

    The families brought photographs of the victims including wreath and flowers to lay on the grave.

    They were further peeved when they learnt that officials of the transport company were not present at the burial of the victims.

    Ani Justin said his brother, Chibuzor died in the accident.

    “I have no option but to accept the fact that my brother is buried in another land.”

    Chika Odiamah said he spent three days at the hospital trying to identify his relatives but could not before he accepted the mass burial.

    The victims’ relatives called for a policy that would made heavy duty vehicles ply the road only at night.

    Officials of UBTH, policemen were present at the burial.

  • Ribadu in Ikenne, urges Boko Haram sect to accept Amnesty

    Former Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) presidential candidate, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has  appealed to members of Boko Haram sect to yield grounds in the name Allah, and accept the amnesty offer being planned by  the Federal Government.

    The former Anti – corruption Czar  also urged the Federal Government not be discouraged by the stance of the militant Boko Haram sect on Amnesty but to persevere in its peace moves towards making the group to lay down their arms.

    Ribadu,  who spoke in Ikenne home of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo on Saturday while fielding questions from reporters, noted that the Boko Haram insurgence in parts of the North in the last couple of years had cost the country fortunes in diverse areas.

    The former EFCC boss  was accompanied Ikenne by the former Aviation Minsiter, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode and  former Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Alh. Aliyu Moddibo, to the matriarch of Awolowo family, Chief (Mrs) Hannah Idowu Dideolu(HID) to commiserate with her on the death of her son, Evangelist Oluwole Awolowo.

    He said  dialogue with members of the sect would bring much sought hope putting an end to the spate of killings and destruction from the sect.

    Ribadu said: “it is very sad when I heard that the Boko Haram sect rejected the amnesty offer, but that does not mean that government should totally relent in the move. Personally, my view from the onset is we should pursue the direction of dialogue and not closing any door against peace.

    “From now, the feelers and body language of the sect is not encouraging, but that does not mean that we should abandon or give up. We should pursue the direction of peace.

    “I urged the Federal Government to continue in the line and direction of looking for a way of addressing and stopping this carnage and bloodbath. Even if means pursuing dialogue, even if there are stumbling blocks on the way, it is not to give up.”

    According to him, the Islamist sect were not doing the nation any good by shedding blood of innocent people at will in a country where  the act of terrorism is not acceptable and tolerable.

    He urged the sect to take cognisance of the fact that  no meaningful could be achieved in an atmosphere of violence and blood-letting.

    ” I am also making a direct appeal to those who are involved to know that they are destroying their own people. They must understand that it has not worked anywhere in the world and it will not work in Nigeria. What do they want to gain from this senseless killing. In the name of God let them stop,” Ribadu stated.

    Ribadu in condoling with Mama HID all left behind by the late Oluwole, he described the deceased’s death as a painful loss and urged the family to accept it as an act of God.

    Four feared dead as van plunges into Lagos river

    Four occupants of Hilux Pickup van that plunged into the Majidun River, Ikorodu Road, Lagos Saturday morning are feared dead says emergency rescue agencies.

    The van with registration number KSF918AU owned by a Lagos elite club, according to Director, State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe, plunged into the river at about 6am.

    Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) and the State Fire Service have on ground to pull out the vehicle and the occupants.

    It was learnt that Kolawole Ahmed, a Manager at Ikoyi Golf Club drove the van which plunged into the river.

    Eyewitness said they saw four people, the driver, dressed in a while shirt, while three other passangers wore suit. However, a staff of the club said the manager drove alone early this morning after closing from work.

    Sear for their victims is continuing. Local divers said their bodies may not be recovered until Sunday

    When contacted, NEMA’s South-South information officer, Ibrahim Farinloye, told The Nation that the Van has been seen but occupants have not been located.

    He said: “Yes, a pickup van belonging to the Ikoyi Gulf Club plunged into the Majidun River some hours ago.

    “Rescue operation has since commenced as the relevant agencies are on ground to save the situation.

    “We have been able to locate the van but we are still searching for the occupants.”

    Save the Children, Nigeria according to a statement by its Communication and Events Assistant, Grace Olomiwe, on April 5 marked 1,000 days left to deliver the eight Millennium Development Goals and  4594 days since 150 countries made the  commitment.

    Save the Children an internationally active non-governmental organization that promotes children’s rights to development, participation, education, protection in Nigeria collaborated with the United Nations Millennium Campaign to mark the event by hosting a #Post2015NG Social Media Hub, an event that brought, youth leaders and Social Media activists from across Nigeria together.

    The programme was to inform, connect and empower  participants on social good and channel  the various online debate on post- 2015 particularly MY World to real time consultation.

    Social Media Activists were mobilized and empowered to engage the public to take action via voting on the MyWorld2015 site www.myworld2015.org and  @savechildrenNG  @myworld2015 with Hashtags #Post2015, #Post2015NG #MDGmomentum and  through their individual Social Media Presence on many social platforms like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Google+, LinkedIn etc.

    The event was a unique opportunity to support Nigerian government and Civil Society Post2015 Consultations efforts across the country through the mobilization and engagement of  online and new media users providing an opportunity to vote on their top six development priorities through www.myworld2015.org.

     

     

  • Jonathan to attend Kenyatta’s inauguration

    President Goodluck Jonathan will leave Abuja Monday night  for Nairobi, Kenya where he is scheduled to join other African leaders at Tuesday’s inauguration of Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta as Kenya’s fourth President.

    He will be accompanied to Mr. Kenyatta’s swearing-in ceremony at the Kasarani Sports Complex in Nairobi by the Acting Governor of Taraba State, Alhaji Garba Umar, Senator Emmanuel Paulker and the Minister of State (Foreign Affairs), Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed.

    The President will return to Abuja Tuesday  and will preside over the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council as usual on Wednesday.

    President Goodluck Jonathan has condoled with the government and people of Great Britain on the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
    In his condolence message, President Jonathan noted  that having already attained a legendary status in her lifetime after positively transforming Britain forever in her eleven and half years as Prime Minister, Baroness Thatcher will, with her passage today formally take her place in history as one the greatest world leaders of our time.
    “Baroness Thatcher will be eternally honoured for serving her country with immense passion and strong-willed determination as well as for the great transformation that resulted from her economic and social policies which laid the solid basis for the remarkable economic growth that was witnessed in Britain under the Conservative Government that she led.
    “She will always be remembered by the world for her very unique, distinctive and purposeful leadership which restored pride and respect to her country and made a resurgent Great Britain a force to be reckoned with on the global stage, ” Jonathan stated.
  • Six family members die in car crash

    Six members of a family lost their lives when the car they were in collided with an on-coming trailer along the Calabar-Ikom Highway in Cross River State on Friday.

    The accident that occurred  around Ehom village of the road in Biase Local Government Area, claimed the lives of four females and two males of the Osims, a well known family in Ikom.

    According to eyewitnesses, a Toyota Camry driven by Mr. Bernard Osim, an anesthetic technician at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, was trying to overtake a vehicle at a bend when it collided with the trailer which was coming in the other direction.

    The trailer, which was empty, it was learnt was heading to Calabar to convey goods while the Osim family were on their way to Ikom.

    The driver of the Toyota Camry, who was the elder brother to the Special Adviser to Senator Liyel Imoke on Political Affairs, Fred Osim, also died alongside his wife, Mrs. Mercy Osim, mother, Agada Osim, niece, Faith Odigha, younger sister, Delight Osim and an unidentified younger brother.

    It was gathered that the family were travelling to Ikom to distribute Delight Osim’s wedding card which was billed for May 11, 2013.

    A family source said, “She is the last born to Fred Osim and she was the one the brother and mother were taking to Ikom to distribute her wedding cards for the wedding scheduled for the 11th of May, we are short of words as we are mourning.”

    The trailer driver, it was gathered ran into the nearby bush alongside his assistant to escape the rage of the youths of the community.

    The Federal Road Safety Commission, led by the Itigidi Unit Commander, Mr. B. I. Abdul, cleared the way and deposited the corpses at the Ugep General Hospital mortuary.

    Sector Commander of FRSC in Cross River State, Mr. Yussuf Salami, said the accident was caused by dangerous overtaking.
