  • Boston Marathon bombing suspect caught after manhunt

A 19-year-old suspected of carrying out the Boston Marathon bombings with his older brother was captured by police after a day-long manhunt on Friday that closed down the city and turned a working-class suburb into a virtual military zone.

Reuters reports that the capture sent waves of relief and jubilation through Boston and the suburb of Watertown, where armored vehicles roamed the streets and helicopters flew overhead through the day. Residents and police officers cheered and clapped when the suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was taken alive after a gunfight.

Bleeding and in serious condition, he was admitted to a Boston hospital, a Massachusetts State Police spokesman said.

A spokeswoman for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Kelly Lawman, confirmed on Saturday that Tsarnaev was being treated there, but declined comment on his condition. The FBI would be providing any updates, she said.

It was not yet clear when he would face initial charges.

Tsarnaev had been hiding in the stern of a boat parked in the backyard of a house in Watertown, police said. A resident called police after spotting blood on the boat.

President Barack Obama told reporters at the White House after the suspect’s capture that questions remained from the bombings, including whether the two suspects received any help.

Monday’s bombing, described by Obama as an act of terrorism, was the worst such attack on U.S. soil since September 11, 2001, and rattled nerves across the United States.

The brothers, ethnic Chechens who once lived in Russia, are suspected of setting off bombs made in pressure cookers and packed with ball bearings and nails at the crowded finish line of Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring 176.

The family of Martin Richard, an 8-year-old boy killed in the blast, welcomed the arrest.

“Tonight, our community is once again safe from these two men,” the family said in a statement.

The older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, was killed on Thursday night in a shootout with police less than a mile from where Friday night’s capture took place.

After combing through a mass of pictures and video from the site in the minutes before the bombing, the FBI had publicized pictures of the two men on Thursday and asked the public for help in identifying them.

  • Nigeria gets first software incubation centre

Nigeria gets first software incubation centre

Nigeria has finally launched the first software incubation centre in Lagos.

It is known as the Information Technology Developers Entrepreneurship Accelerator (iDEA) Software Incubation Centre.

iDEA is a not-for-profit special purpose vehicle (SPV) constituted to ensure the successful implementation of the programme across the country.
Speaking at the event, Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, said the official launch of the project  marks a significant milestone in the country’s quest to grow the software development industry and grow young entrepreneurs too.
The software incubation centre is located in the popular Herbert Macaulay Street, Yaba, a middle class business and residential area on the mainland of metropolitan Lagos.
She recalled that the idea of the centre came shortly after she was appointed minister of the new ministry, adding that every consultation she had with stakeholders in the industry all pointed to the fact that the software industry has huge potential to support ongoing efforts at job and wealth creation for the youths of the country
The consultation led to setting up of  a committee to provide a working template since it will be impossible to import wholesale what has been done in places like China and India.
The committee worked assiduously to produce what has led to the establishment of the incubation centres.
“There is a lot of work to be done. We will bring all the multinationals to this initiative,” she said.
Mrs Johnson said the launch of the other incubation centres, first in Tinapa Knowledge City, Calabar, Cross Rivers State, and others will follow suit.
Chairman, Governing Board of iDEA, Adedotun Suleiman, said the centre will offer all the technical and financial assistance needed by students, developers and start-ups to grow their ideas, adding that with the funding from the Federal Government, the coast was clear for youngsters with promising business plan to make them a reality.
Project Manager, Helen Anatogu, said the centres will provide developers the opportunity to develop their skills and market it.

Seven French hostages released in Cameroon

A French family of seven including four children kidnapped in northern Cameroon and taken to Nigeria by suspected Boko Haram militants have been released, a senior Cameroon official said on Friday.

“They are all alive and well,’’ Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, secretary-general of Cameroon’s presidency, said in a statement carried by state radio.

He said the family had been handed over to Cameroon authorities late on Thursday.

The family, which was on holiday, was abducted in February by men on motorcycles, armed with Kalashnikovs in Dabanga about 10 km from the Nigerian border near the Waza national park.

Gunmen claiming to be from Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram later released videos of the family, threatening to kill them if authorities in Nigeria and Cameroon did not release Muslim militants held there.

The parents of the family, which included two boys and two girls as well as another relative, work for French utility firm GDF Suez.

  • Entertainment industry lawyer Ozako dies

    Entertainment industry lawyer Ozako dies

The entertainment industry has been hit by the death of another vital stakeholder, Efere Ozako, a lawyer, whose frantic agitation for ‘the right of the entertainer to profit’ has changed the showbiz orientation in Nigeria.

Ozako, a Multichoice Nigeria’s Legal Adviser and prominent participant at various entertainment conferences, made a debut with a business forum, Dtalkshop, in 2006, which he ran with his cousin, Kaine Agari, author of Yellow-Yellow.

One of Efere’s closest allies, Mrs. Amaka Igwe was too stunned to say a word, when contacted on telephone. She wept quietly. Agari’s phone continued to ring unattended.

Efere, was said to have suddenly fallen ill yesterday, complaining of a headache, after returning from a trip to South Africa. He was rushed to Havana hospital by his wife. He was later referred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, where he gave up the ghost. Unconfirmed reports say he died of cardiac arrest. He was 49-year-old.

The mood at his Surulere residence, this morning explained how much he was loved by many; neighbours cried inconsolably, so were the entertainers who thronged the house. Spotted at the residence were comedy merchant, Opa Williams and actor Fred Amata. Others where Charles Inojie, Emeka Osai, Fidelis Duker and Kate Henshaw.

Reports say the late lawyer had been penciled down for honours in the next edition of Ojez Monthly Entertainment Forum. The forum rewards celebrities who have been outstanding in their chosen careers.

Ozako was the co-founder of Dtalkshop, a legal agency ran with Agari. The agency publishes TAKAii magazine, Nigeria’s premier law tabloid. Ozako came to prominence with a workshop series tagged, Wetin Lawyers Dey Do … Sef?; a forum meant to awaken the filmmakers to the reality of their right to live and feed well through their artistic endeavors. The group frowned at the activities of pirates and similar rights infringers.

The second edition of Wetin Lawyers Dey Do… Sef? had a symposium under the theme: “The Entertainment Industry; Where is the Money? The Role of the Lawyer and other Professionals Explored and Defined”.

Ozako’s pursuit of a commercially viable and respected entertainment industry was unequalled. He saw the commercial potential of the Nigerian film industry as a situation that is largely untapped. Through Dtalkshop, he had engaged various economic experts through workshops and seminars sought to educate stakeholders on how to harness the business and professional ends of the emerging industry which has been rated in terms of quantum.

The first edition of the Dtalkshop workshop series tagged “The Law, The Lawyer and Business of Entertainment” which held on July 27, 2006 in Lagos, Nigeria had over 100 participants who were also treated to topics like “Understanding, Owning, Recognising and Enforcing Intellectual Property Rights”; “Finance 101 for the Entertainment Industry”; “A Walk Through Contracts”; and “Comparative Lessons from the UK and South Africa”.

The second event was being supported by agencies like the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Nigerian Film Corporation, National Sports Lottery, NewAge Communications and Brickwall Communications. These agencies and organizations also presented papers on their plans for the development of the industry. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for instance, as part of its continuing effort to enlighten the public on taxation and contribute to the development of non-oil industries, addressed taxation issues in the entertainment industry.

  • Boston bombing : We will find out who did this- Obama

President Barrack Obama has pledged that the American government will find out who set off the twin bombs at the Boston Marathon on Monday afternoon and “hold them accountable.”

Speaking at the White House press briefing room just hours after two bombs exploded in Boston, Massachusetts Obama was careful not to characterize the attack and instead stressed that “we still do not know who did this or why and people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before we have all the facts. But make no mistake, we will get to the bottom of this and we will find out who did this, we’ll find out why they did this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.”

“On days like this there are no Republicans or Democrats, we are Americans united in concern for our fellow citizens,” he added.

Two dead, 23 wounded in US marathon blast

At least two people were killed and 23 others wounded when two explosions struck near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday in United States.

Police according to agency report  did not immediately confirm  whether the explosions were part of a terrorist attack, but marathon organizers said it was a twin bombing and media outlets reported that other unexploded devices had been found nearby.

The blasts left the streets littered with blood and debris, as paramedics raced off with stretchers and police locked down the area, according to witnesses, one of whom saw a man with his lower limbs blown off.

Boston police confirmed the toll of dead and wounded on its Twitter feed.
