    Agboyi-Ketu launches welfare programme

The Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Adetola Abubakar, has reaffirmed her commitment to people-centred governance with the launch of four major intervention programmes aimed at improving welfare, security and service delivery across the council.

The programmes are the Adetola Food Bank for widows, the elderly and the less privileged; the We Care (WICARE) Initiative to support residents with health, education and emergency needs; a cash intervention scheme for indigent residents; and the provision of patrol and utility vehicles to security agencies, religious bodies and key local government departments.

Abubakar said the interventions were to prioritise the needs of residents and ensure that governance is felt at the grassroots.

“Everything we are doing is about the people. Governance must go beyond policies; it must translate to real support that touches lives,” she said.

She explained that the Adetola Food Bank was designed to provide immediate relief to vulnerable residents across communities.

On the We Care initiative, the chairman said the programme would serve as a safety net for residents facing health, educational and emergency challenges.

Abubakar said “We did not sit in the office to compile names. We went into the communities, engaged stakeholders and identified those who genuinely need food support. Today, 500 beneficiaries are going home with rice, beans, yam and other essential food items to ease the burden of daily living.

“There are people who need urgent surgeries, students with excellent results who have gained admission but lack sponsorship, and families whose houses have been demolished. Under We Care, the local government is giving them a shoulder to lean on. Once a request is verified and found genuine, we will stand firmly by our people.”

Abubakar said 500 residents benefited from the cash intervention scheme, each receiving N100,000 as economic support to help stabilise their livelihoods.

She added that the council provided patrol and utility vehicles to strengthen security and improve service delivery.

“For transparency’s sake, the money went directly from the local government’s account into the beneficiaries’ personal accounts. There was no middleman, no manipulation, and people received their alerts right here during the programme.”

“We provided patrol vehicles to security agencies to support their work and keep our communities safe. We also provided utility vehicles to religious organisations such as CAN and the League of Imams, as well as key departments of the local government, to enhance community engagement, project monitoring and revenue generation,” she said.

Lagos State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Cornelius Ojelabi, commended Abubakar’s performance, describing her first 100 days in office as impactful and people-oriented.

“From what we have seen and the documents before us, the number of roads under construction and the efforts to lift people out of poverty by supporting their businesses are commendable.

The councilor, representing Baale Ward in Coker-Aguda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Olaiya Musbau has empowered 250 women with N20,000 each during the  annual end-of-the-year fiesta.

The event, held at Cana Primary School, Coker-Aguda, was to recognise women who contributed to community mobilisation and supported political activities in the ward.

Musbau said the initiative was meant to reward women for their role in mobilising voters during the last election.

Olaiya added that beneficiaries were selected through community development associations (CDAs), churches, mosques and artisan groups to ensure transparency and fairness.

IT expert tackles digital skills gap among kids

As United Kingdom grapples with a digital skills gap, particularly among children from under-represented communities, a Nigerian-born technology expert is leading efforts to change that narrative for black children in UK and Europe.

Wale Atekoja, a Data, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning engineer with over 16 years experience in technology, is equipping young people with future-ready digital skills.

Atekoja is the chief executive officer of Boardelesstek Limited, a UK-registered technology company, and founder of the educational initiative, Black Kids Coding in the UK.

The programme teaches children coding, software development, AI and other critical technology skills, with the aim of turning them into creators rather than passive users of digital tools.

Atekoja said: “Technology has always been part of my life. Both my parents were software developers. Growing up in that environment shaped how I think and solve problems. It also inspired me to teach children skills that truly prepare them for the future.”

Atekoja explained that while the first decade of his career was dedicated to mastering software development and enterprise systems, the last 10 years have focused on entrepreneurship and capacity building. That shift, he said, helped him realise that technology’s greatest impact lies in empowering people.

Through Black Kids Coding in the UK, Atekoja works with black parents in the UK and Europe to ensure their children get early exposure to digital education. He believes early engagement builds confidence, critical thinking and long-term opportunity.

“When children start learning tech early, it can change their life trajectory,” he said. “I want them to see that they can create, innovate and contribute meaningfully to the digital world.”

In less than two years, the initiative has trained more than 100 children, with plans already in place to expand the programme’s reach.

Atekoja also urged Africans in the diaspora to leverage skills and business experience developed in their home countries while adapting to the realities of operating abroad.

“As a 40-year-old, giving back is not optional—it is essential,” he said. “Every child we train is an investment in the future, not just for them, but for society as a whole. Value creation is not only about profits; it is about impact.”

  • Professionalism tool for excellent entrepreneurship’

    Professionalism tool for excellent entrepreneurship’

Britain-based Entrepreneurship Educator, Technology  and Business Development Manager, Dr Saheed Gbadegeshin, has stressed the need for professionalism in businesss.

He noted that professional is the difference between a temporary service provider and a strategic partner.

“It builds confidence, reduces risk, strengthens relationships, and ensures top outcomes. In our world, where reputations travel fast, professionalism is the standard that defines your value and makes you excel in your entrepreneurial activities,” he said.

He said professionalism is also about ethics; there are moments clients push for recommendations to make short-term numbers look good but create long-term harm, such as cutting training budgets or ignoring operational risks.

Gbadegeshin noted that in those situations, professionalism means being honest, backing concerns with evidence, and offering better options—not simply saying what the client wants to hear.

He said this takes courage, but it protects the client and your integrity.

“One clearest way professionalism shows up is in how you handle trust. I once supported a client undergoing a major restructuring, involving redundancies, role changes, and confidential financial data. The analysis itself was not the hardest part; the challenge was maintaining discretion while coordinating multiple stakeholders. I ensured documents were securely shared, meetings carefully scheduled, and conversations on a strictly “need-to-know.

“Because I demonstrated confidentiality and maturity, leaders felt safe to share the real constraints behind their decisions. That level of access improved quality of the solution, and it reminded me that professionalism is often the hidden ingredient behind effective consultancy outcomes.

“Professionalism also shows reliability in delivering what you promised, when you promised it, and to the required standard. On one of my consulting projects, a client’s board presentation deadline was moved forward unexpectedly. Rather than rushing and producing a shaky output, I communicated a revised plan quickly: what could realistically be delivered, what assumptions would be used, and what risks would remain if the timeline changed. I worked late to meet the deadline, but I also protected quality through clear structure, accurate data, and an executive-ready narrative. The client later told me that what stood out was not just the final deck, but it was the calm, organised way the pressure was managed.

“That is professionalism:being dependable under stress without becoming careless or defensive.

“Another important aspect is respectful communication. Entrepreneurs often sit between organisations with competing interests and sometimes among departments, where finance wants cost control, operations want flexibility, HR wants compliance, and leadership wants speed. I have learned to listen actively, summarise viewpoints fairly, and challenge assumptions without attacking people. When tensions rise, tone matters as much as content. Simple habits:being punctual, preparing thoroughly, documenting decisions, and following up—create psychological safety and prevent misunderstandings from becoming conflicts,” he said.
