Oshoala applauds Iwobi’s brilliant AFCON display

Super Falcons star striker Asisat Oshoala has praised Alex Iwobi for his influential role in the Super Eagles’ resurgence at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, crediting the Fulham midfielder for stepping out of his famous uncle’s shadow.

In a Facebook post shared shortly after Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 win over Mozambique on Monday night, Oshoala reflected on the long-standing comparisons between Iwobi and his uncle, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha.

“Since he made his debut for Nigeria in 2015, Iwobi has played under the weight of comparisons with his uncle,” Oshoala wrote. “No matter what he does, his performances have never been enough for many Nigerians who judge him by the standards set by Jay-Jay.”

However, Oshoala believes AFCON 2025 has marked a turning point in Iwobi’s international career.

“At AFCON 2025, Iwobi finally stepped out of his uncle’s shadow and shut his critics up permanently. He has been one of Nigeria’s best players in this tournament,” she stated.

Despite not registering an assist against Mozambique, Oshoala highlighted Iwobi’s influence in Nigeria’s attacking play, noting his involvement in the build-up to the first two goals.

“His through balls created both goals, and he was the foundation of every attack in the final third. It was an all-round performance that shows why he deserves more appreciation,” the striker concluded.

Champions Cote d’Ivoire complete quarter-finalists with  victory over Burkina Faso

Winger Amad Diallo scored one goal and created another to continue his excellent form in Morocco as defending champions Ivory Coast eased past Burkina Faso 3-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations round-of-16 fixture in Marrakech on Tuesday.

The Ivorians will face record seven-time winners Egypt in a heavyweight quarter-final in Agadir on Saturday, a colossal clash that is a repeat of the 2006 decider where the North African side triumphed on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

Yan Diomande and Bazoumana Toure were also on target for coach Emerse Fae’s team as they dominated the contest against an out-gunned Burkinabe and might have won by a greater margin but for some excellent goalkeeping from Herve Koffi.

Diallo, 23, will go back to a new manager at Manchester United after the finals in Morocco having been one of the stand-out players at the tournament so far with three goals and an assist, driving the Ivorians’ impressive title defence.

Fenerbahce to table first N62 Billion offer for Lookman

Fenerbahce are stepping up their pursuit of Ademola Lookman and are preparing an opening bid for the Atalanta forward as they look to land another high-profile signing in January.

According to Sport Mediaset journalist Orazio Accomando, the Turkish club are ready to table an offer structured as a paid loan worth €5 million, with a right, or potential obligation, to buy set at €37 million (about N62 Billion) .

Talks are still at an early stage, but Fenerbahce have identified Lookman as a priority target to strengthen their attack.

Atalanta, however, would prefer a permanent transfer rather than a temporary solution.

The Bergamo-based club value Lookman highly following his performances in Serie A and Europe and are reluctant to accept a deal that delays a full sale unless the conditions are particularly favourable.

The Nigeria international, currently at the African Cup of Nations, remains a key figure for Atalanta, but interest from abroad has continued to grow, with Fenerbahce now pushing to test the club’s stance.

It comes after a summer that saw the former Fulham man heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan, even going as so far as to try and force a move away from the club. However, Inter refused to meet Atalanta’s demands and the player stayed in Bergamo.

Any progress is likely to depend on whether the Turkish side are willing to convert their proposal into a straight transfer or include an obligation to buy under achievable conditions.

For now, negotiations have not yet entered an advanced phase, but Fenerbahce’s willingness to commit significant funds suggests the situation could develop quickly in the coming days.

  • Oshiomhole gets set as Okpekpe 10km Road Race returns in May

Oshiomhole gets set as Okpekpe 10km Road Race returns in May

Former Edo State Governor  and  Senator representing Edo North, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has declared his readiness for the 2026 edition of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, scheduled for May.

In a video that has now gone viral, Oshiomhole appeared in his white Okpekpe T-shirt while walking in preparation for the race. He proudly displayed the distance covered and calories burned on his phone, 8.92km in 85 minutes, expending 492 calories, as proof of his training routine.

“Getting ready for Okpekpe race in May 2026. It’s good to start practicing, events don’t just happen overnight. To cover 10km in a mainly hilly environment with valleys, and fresh air. We are looking forward to this year’s Okpekpe race day and that is why I put on my Okpekpe T-shirt,” he said.

Oshiomhole described the race as unparalleled, not only because it was the first in West Africa to be granted a World Athletics Label but also because of the natural setting in which it takes place.

“It is the best road race in the world, I don’t want to say Africa, because there is no part of the world that has that kind of beautiful terrain, beautiful hills and valleys and it’s greens all over the place, and an innocent community with no pollution, clean air. If you want people with the African and traditional village hospitality, the natives are the best,” he added.

Experts agree that the Okpekpe terrain offers athletes a rare advantage. Running in a hilly, green environment devoid of air pollution enhances cardiovascular conditioning, strengthens muscles, improves lung efficiency, and provides mental restoration.

The combination of elevation changes, clean air, and natural surroundings creates both physiological and psychological benefits that boost performance and recovery.

This uniqueness has also been acknowledged by Norrie Williamson, a World Athletics certified course measurer from South Africa and technical delegate to the race on several occasions.

“The Okpekpe race terrain is one of the most unique in the world. The hills and valleys make it a true test for athletes, while the clean air and natural environment provide conditions that are rare in road running,” Williamson said in an interview. “It is not just about the competition; the course itself is an experience. Okpekpe offers a blend of athletic rigor and cultural authenticity that few races can match.”

The Okpekpe 10km Road Race holds a special place in African athletics history.

In 2015, it became the first road running event in West Africa to be granted a World Athletics Label, just eight years after the governing body began certifying road races worldwide.

A Label race is recognized globally for its quality and compliance, signifying that the event meets strict international standards for competition, organization, safety, and athlete participation.

Performances in Label races count toward official World Rankings in marathon and road running categories, giving athletes from Nigeria and across Africa a platform to compete at the highest level.

For Oshiomhole, however, the race is more than just a sporting event. It is a celebration of community, culture, and the pristine environment of Okpekpe.

‘There is no part of the world that has that kind of beautiful terrain,’ he emphasized, pointing to the hills, valleys, greenery, and hospitality of the local people.

Nigerian striker Rafiu Durosinmi has taken a major step in his career after completing a move to Italian Serie A side Pisa SC from Czech champions Viktoria Plzen.

The 23-year-old centre-forward, who celebrated his birthday just last week, had been on the radar of several European clubs after entering the final months of his contract with Viktoria Plzen, due to expire at the end of the season. The move to Italy marks a significant milestone for the Nigerian forward, who now has the opportunity to showcase his talents in one of Europe’s top five leagues while helping Pisa in their quest for stability in Serie A.

Speaking after his unveiling, Bassey expressed appreciation to the club’s leadership.

Barau FC bolster survival push with three acquisitions

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) second stanza kicks off on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, with clubs at the lower end of the table scrambling for momentum in the race for survival.

Seventeenth-placed Barau FC will host Niger Tornadoes in Kano, while bottom-placed Kun Khalifat FC face a stern away test against Katsina United, also in Kano, as the league resumes after the mid-season break.

In a move that could significantly shape the fortunes of both sides, Kun Khalifat FC have confirmed the transfer of trio Uche Moses, Ebuka Nwokorie and Henry Ezeonye to Barau FC.

The deal represents one of the most notable mid-season transactions involving two relegation-threatened teams, with direct implications for their respective second-round ambitions.

For Barau FC, currently 17th on the NPFL table with 21 points, the acquisitions signal a clear intent to strengthen and pull away from the danger zone. The arrival of three players already accustomed to the league’s physical and tactical demands is expected to add depth, competition and renewed belief as they prepare for a crucial home fixture against Niger Tornadoes to open the second stanza.

Conversely, the departures leave Kun Khalifat FC, who sit 20th  with 18 points, facing an uphill task as they battle to revive their campaign.

  • Maresca proud of accomplishments at Chelsea

Maresca proud of accomplishments at Chelsea

Enzo Maresca bid an emotional farewell to Chelsea fans on Tuesday, saying he had accomplished all he could during an 18‑month spell that revitalised the club before his abrupt exit on New Year’s Day.

The Italian manager was the latest casualty in Chelsea’s revolving door of coaches under BlueCo ownership after one win in seven Premier League games forced the club to act.

Under his guidance, Chelsea claimed the Conference League, the Club World Cup and secured Champions League qualification last season for the first time in two years but the Italian did not see eye-to-eye with the board, leading to his exit.

“My journey with Chelsea began with the preliminary rounds of the Conference League. I leave with the inner peace of leaving a prestigious club like Chelsea where it deserves to be,” Maresca wrote on Instagram.

“I want to thank all the Chelsea fans for their support over the last 18 months. Support that was crucial to achieving Champions League qualification, winning the Conference League, and winning the Club World Cup.

“A special thank you to all the players who have accompanied me on this wonderful journey. I wish everyone who has shared every moment with me every success in this second half of the season and in the future.”

Following his departure last week, Chelsea’s under-21s head coach Calum McFarlane was placed in interim charge before Liam Rosenior was confirmed as Chelsea’s new head coach on Tuesday.

  • Palace boss Glasner dismisses links with Man United

Palace boss Glasner dismisses links with Man United

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner on Tuesday batted away questions over the managerial vacancy at Manchester United, saying cryptically he is “not allowed to bet”.

The Austrian is among the bookies’ favourites to replace Ruben Amorim, who was sacked on Monday after 14 months at Old Trafford.

Glasner, 51, has impressed since arriving at Palace in 2024, leading them to their first major trophy by winning the FA Cup last season.

The Palace boss, who is out of contract at the end of the season, said last month that talks over a potential new deal at Selhurst Park were on hold.

Speaking on the eve of his side’s home game against high-flying Aston Villa, he was evasive when asked about the United job.

“I’m not allowed to bet,” he said. “My contract has one paragraph (that says) I’m not allowed to bet. I don’t look at it.”

Glasner was asked whether it would be wise to back him to be United’s next manager.

“I also can’t give insider information because also I would be breaking my contract,” he said with a smile. “I’m Crystal Palace manager. It just makes no sense and it’s wasted time for you to ask me any more questions so I don’t talk about any other club.”

Glasner said the length of managers’ contracts had limited meaning.

“You can win trophies and six months later you aren’t the manager there anymore so I think if you see the length of a contract it doesn’t mean anything about the future,” he said.

“Even if I sign a new contract you could ask me every day, ‘What’s the future?’

“Ruben Amorim said he had 18 months left in his press conference and he’s not the manager anymore.

  • Englishman Rosenior takes over at Chelsea

Englishman Rosenior takes over at Chelsea

Liam Rosenior has been confirmed as Chelsea’s new head coach on a six-and-a-half-year deal, saying the opportunity to succeed Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge was too good to turn down.

The 41-year-old Strasbourg boss told a press conference earlier in the day at the Ligue 1 club that he had “verbally agreed” on the move.

Chelsea officially announced that Rosenior, who will take charge of his first match in the FA Cup at the weekend, had signed a deal until 2032.

“I am extremely humbled and honoured to be appointed head coach of Chelsea Football Club,” he said in a statement on the Premier League team’s website. “This is a club with a unique spirit and a proud history of winning trophies.

“My job is to protect that identity and create a team that reflects these values in every game we play as we continue winning trophies.”

Rosenior has just three years’ experience as a manager, with Hull City and French club Strasbourg, and has never coached in the Premier League.

But he had been widely touted as the frontrunner to succeed Maresca since the Italian left Chelsea last week.

Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo multi-club ownership group that also controls Chelsea.

Rosenior is Chelsea’s fourth permanent managerial appointment since BlueCo took control of the club previously owned by Roman Abramovich in 2022.

The club said the Englishman had shown “he can build teams with a clear way of playing while setting the highest standards with players on and off the pitch”.

“While there will continue to be a focus on player development, the club’s expectations and ambitions remain high,” Chelsea added.

Rosenior said he had wanted to announce the news himself in Strasbourg because of his deep feelings for the French club.

The former defender, whose father, Leroy Rosenior, was also a player and a manager, told reporters the chance to manage Chelsea was “an opportunity I cannot turn down”.

“I’m so excited about the future. I cannot lie. My whole life I’ve worked to be a coach,” he said. “To be presented with this opportunity to manage a world-class football club is something I’ve always dreamed of.

“With that is a mixed emotion of sadness of what I’m leaving behind.”

Chelsea interim manager Calum McFarlane told reporters that he would remain in charge for Wednesday’s Premier League match against Fulham.

McFarlane said he had spoken briefly to the club’s new boss.

“He’s obviously really excited about taking the role,” he said. “It’s a brief conversation, so my understanding is he’s going to be at Cobham (Chelsea’s training ground) later on today.”

Rosenior played in the Premier League and the second-tier Championship in England. His clubs included Fulham, Reading and Hull.

He had a variety of coaching roles at Derby, which included 12 matches as caretaker manager at the start of the 2022⁄23 season.

Later in 2022 Rosenior took over as manager of Championship team Hull.

He was sacked after 18 months and in July 2024 was appointed by Strasbourg, who he guided to seventh place in Ligue 1 last season.

McFarlane said Rosenior’s teams played “aggressive, front-foot football” and that his appointment would inspire English managers.

Since the formation of the Premier League in 1992, not a single English manager has won the title.

“I’m sure all young English coaches from an academy background will be in some way, regardless of who you support, rooting for Liam,” said McFarlane.

“So it is really inspirational for young academy English coaches.”

Maresca left Chelsea abruptly on New Year’s Day following a deterioration in his relationship with club bosses, just months after winning the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup.

Chelsea are fifth in the Premier League, 17 points behind Arsenal, with just one win in their past eight league games.
