NEITI to sign MoU with CSOs on environmental justice

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) and a leading civil society organisation – Environmental Rights Action (ERA) – will sign a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen civic engagements on environmental justice in the management of oil and gas emissions and gender issues, particularly in the extractive industries host communities.

The MoU will cover public education and enlightenment, civil society policy advocacy, capacity building on control of toxic and poisonous chemicals such as carbon monoxide, methane and other pollutants resulting from oil and gas exploration in host communities.

The Executive Secretary, Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, made this known in Abuja at a meeting with a delegation from Environmental Right Action (ERA), which is based in the Niger Delta.

The organisation is known for promoting environmental justice in oil producing communities.

Ogbonnaya Orji welcomed the interest shown by the organisation to collaborate with NEITI in addressing this issue.

He added that the new focus of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) globally is on environmental justice, energy transition, climate change and gender equity.

The Executive Secretary emphasised the importance of dialogue, constructive civil society engagement, policy-based discussions with government and extractive industry companies and with diverse stakeholders adding these areas require partnership with civil society organisations.

To meet the challenges of a rapidly changing energy sector, Ogbonnaya Orji recalled that NEITI had recently launched a five-year strategic plan that takes these issues into consideration, and will soon commence the process of reviewing the agency’s enabling law. He also informed that the agency had embraced aggressive training programmes for its workforce.

The Executive Secretary invited the non-governmental organisation to carefully study the research publications on environment and gender recently launched by NEITI, with the support of Ford Foundation, so that it can position itself for a productive engagement with the commission on issues of environment.

Ogbonnaya Orji assured that the commission is ready to provide institutional support required to advance public dialogue, knowledge and action in this area.

The Executive Director of ERA, Bar. Chima Williams, who also led the delegation, described the collaboration with NEITI as timely and a project his organisation is fully committed to pursue.

Williams also used the opportunity to bring to NEITI’s attention the inherent danger facing the Nigerian economy and environment of the Niger Delta region as well as the gradual divestment of international oil companies from onshore to offshore operations that requires limited monitoring, which has left behind abandoned oil wells with environmental pollution and degradation consequences.

The Executive Director identified these challenges as areas of collaboration with NEITI, given the agency’s capacity to support the process with crucial information and data.

He pledged full commitment to the proposed MOU between NEITI and ERA.

Lafarge Africa holds high-level expert conference, seeks clean energy, improved economy

    • By Ayomide Otitoju

Leading innovative and sustainable building solutions company, Lafarge Africa Plc held the 6th edition of its Concrete Ideas stakeholder conference series.

The conference which was held at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, in Lagos recently, brought together industry experts, business leaders and key decision-makers in the energy and waste management sector to examine Nigeria’s strategy to transition to clean or renewable energy and the opportunities the transition presents for Nigerian businesses and for boosting energy supply to reduce Nigeria’s huge energy deficit.

The conversation was organised in two-panel sessions; the first was themed “The Business of Clean Energy: Opportunities for Industries and SMEs” while the second looked at “Promoting Circular Economy through Sustainable Waste Management Practices.”

The workshop was formally opened by Prince Adebode Adefioye, Chairman, Lafarge Africa Plc., who expressed delight at the choice of the topic and the calibre of the experts assembled for the discussions. “Today’s subject is not just about chemistry, not just about Geocycle or decarbonisation, it is about stimulating every part of our economy, creating incentives for investors in clean energy and for people and businesses to embrace the use of clean energy products and technologies. It allows Nigeria not only to boost its energy supply and create new high-value jobs but also to be at the forefront of reducing carbon emissions and saving our planet. Therefore, the whole idea is to bring people together to be able to stimulate ideas, even the banks and broader financial sector, to involve them in creating innovative tech and financial products that allow us to generate and use energy more effectively and productively.”

In his remarks, Khaled El Dokani, Country Chief Executive Officer, of Lafarge Africa Plc, said: “Fighting climate change and making the transition towards a greener economy requires a concerted effort by industries, individuals and the government.”

“As a leader in innovation, Lafarge will continue to collaborate with stakeholders and we expect that the discussions by a range of industry experts and public officials here present today, will provide a clear view of the business of clean energy and reveal the opportunities, insights and strategic agendas for leaders in the private and public sectors to accelerate our society’s access to clean energy,” he added.

In the session dedicated to the business of clean energy, the experts and Thought Leaders which include Engr Joseph Olayande, Acting Director General, Energy Commission of Nigeria, represented by Mr Ibrahim Sulu, Director of Energy Management, Energy Commission of Nigeria; Mr OlapadeDurotoye, Managing Director Savannah Energy; and Mr. Ayo Ademilua, CEO, Renewable Energy Association of Nigeria; highlighted the need for adequate access to energy by hundreds of millions of Nigerians and the challenges affecting the adoption of clean energy.

They also shared insights on the strategic choices operators, investors, regulators, and the government have to make to achieve the desired goals.

The experts concluded that to fully harness the many advantages that clean energy offers, the government and all the stakeholders in the energy sector must take bolder steps to combat the many problems militating against the mass adoption and use of renewable energy in Nigeria.

This they believe will make Nigeria a more attractive destination for global energy investment that will allow it to fund the transition towards lower carbon sources of energy such as wind, water, sun and biomass.

The second session discussed the challenges facing the waste sector, the potential of waste as a clean energy source, and the steps that can be taken towards promoting a circular economy to reduce waste generation.

The experts include Mr. Ola Oresanya, immediate past Commissioner for Environment, Ogun State; Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, MD/CEO, Lagos State Environmental protection agency; Mr. Ibrahim AdejuwonOdunboni, MD Lagos State Waste Management Authority; who was represented by Dr. Essien, Director of Sustainability, Mr. Wassim Elhusseini, MD/CEO of Nestle Nigeria Plc; represented by Mrs. NdidiAmakaUwadoka, and Prof. AloBabajide, a retired Professor of Chemistry from the University of Lagos; advocated that circular thinking will be essential to avoid an ever-worsening impact of waste in Nigeria.

They affirmed that one of the ways to promote a circular economy and reduce waste generation is to encourage and promote responsible consumption amongst the citizens.

They agreed that each stakeholder in the value chain must play their part optimally as weak adoption of circular economy choices by any group of stakeholders would affect the whole system.

Daniel Adedokun, the Head of Geocycle at Lafarge Africa also made a presentation to the audience about Geocycle’s operations as a leading provider of industrial, agricultural and municipal waste management services. Geocycle pre-processes and co-processes non-recyclable waste into a safe, usable resource with no residue.

In his presentation at the high-profile conference, Mr. Ola Oresanya, Immediate Past Commissioner for Environment Ogun State, commended the incredible job Lafarge Africa is doing for taking the lead in the circular economy through its Geocycle operations.

He said: ‘Geocycle, a Lafarge subsidiary, works with manufacturers to collect waste such as non-recyclables and other hazardous wastes to co-process them in its cement kiln.’

He further said: “Out of the big players in Ogun State, Lafarge is the only one that has been consistent. They are the only company that has been engaging with us. They have invested in research to partner with the government and the private sector to solve the problem of waste.”

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks from the Chief Financial Officer, Lafarge Africa Plc, LoluAlade- Akinyemi, who stressed that the company will continue to pursue the road of dialogue and collaboration and strive to bring as many players under this platform of Concrete Ideas as possible.

He noted that it is only through concerted cooperation and regular interaction can an understanding of the main issues involved be improved and the confidence required to forge a lasting and effective interrelationship among all the main parties, producers, consumers and investors alike be established.

  • SON tasks auto dealers, importers on standards compliance

SON tasks auto dealers, importers on standards compliance

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has tasked stakeholders in the auto industry to take advantage of standards to remain competitive and relevant especially as the Africa Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) is on the cards.

The Director General, SON, Mallam Farouk Salim, at a sensitisation programme for Auto Spare Parts and Machineries Dealers Association (ASPAMDA) in Badagry area of Lagos, said the operationalisation of AfCFTA would turn Nigeria and indeed the entire African continent to one huge market, he said AfCFTA would provide for Nigeria the competitive edge in trading with other neighboring countries’ auto and machineries dealers.

He advised the need to take optimum advantage of the emerging huge African market while also urging the market to always ensure that they are strictly into marketing and selling of high quality and standards.

“It is truly a delight to be part of this event and once again demonstrate the importance of this market to the overall economic and industrial revitalization of our country,” he stressed.

He noted that just like other big markets across the country, the market has become a household name, adding that the Standards body acknowledges the importance of the market and would continuously seek out ways to collaborate and carry along all the stakeholders of the very vital market in the business of standardisation.

“We need your continuous support to discharge our mandate of ensuring that only products and services that are of high standard and quality are in circulation. We need to involve all of you towards ensuring strict adherence to the requirements of applicable standards in line with international best practices,” he urged.

In his words: “We all must ensure that only products that comply with laid down Nigeria Industrial Standards are available for sale in this market. SON frowns at the practice of cloning successful brands by unscrupulous businessmen to make quick gains, depriving the trade mark owners of their benefits.”

According to him, the SON Act 2015 empowers the agency to arrest and prosecute offenders, stressing that it would step up its ante to make it impossible for fakers to thrive.

He noted that SON has been working in every sector to bring sanity and raise the confidence of manufacturers, importers and consumers, maintaining standards are improved and reviewed regularly to meet up with current realities.

“SON will continue to seek greater collaboration with the private sector, especially the ASPAMDA, to sanitize the market, expose and prosecute those engaging in illegal activities such as relabeling and cloning of popular brands with low quality varieties,” he assured.

Farouk urged the auto dealers to bridge the gap between the available vehicle and the required need for standard auto parts for maintenance. He said that the dealers should do more by assembling their brands to meet the huge market for auto spare parts and machineries in the country.

The SON boss stated that there is no reason to import fake and substandard products into the country, especially when the agency has provided the guidelines for importers and indigenous manufacturers on standardisation.

“We have the SON Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP) for importers to ensure that whatever they import is in conformity with the nation’s standards from the country of origin.

“While the MANCAP scheme is a detailed guideline for local manufacturers to ensure quality and standard in the production process,” he said.

“Let us all join hands with SON to make ASPAMDA market the destination point where people from within Nigeria, ECOWAS countries and beyond converge and rush in order to purchase quality machinery and spare parts. “This is possible. Yes, we can, if we make standards our way of life and business,” he affirmed.

The SON boss also said the operationalisation of AfCFTA would turn Nigeria and indeed the entire African continent to one huge market.

According to him, AfCFTA will provide for Nigeria the competitive edge in trading with other neighboring countries’ auto and machineries dealers.

He stressed the need to take optimum advantage of the emerging huge African market, urging ASPAMDA to always ensure that they are strictly into marketing and selling of high quality and standards.

“We need your continuous support to discharge our mandate of ensuring that only products and services that are of high standard and quality are in circulation.

“We need to involve all of you towards ensuring strict adherence to the requirements of applicable standards in line with international best practices,” the SON boss said.

According to him, the law empowers the agency to arrest and prosecute offenders, stressing that it would step up its ante to make it impossible for fakers to thrive.

He noted that SON has been working in every sector to bring sanity and raise the confidence of manufacturers, importers and consumers, maintaining that standards are improved and reviewed regularly to meet up with current realities.

He reiterated that the auto spare sector has a critical role in the nation’s economic development, adding that the sector has high potential to create large employment and a wide range of technological advance manufacturing opportunities.

“Therefore, you can imagine that if we fix the auto market properly by ensuring standards, it will become one of the biggest contributors to Nigeria’s gross domestic products (GDP),” he stated.

He also urged ASPAMDA to set up a committee saddled with the responsibilities of adhering to standardisation, manufacturing and importation of fake products into the country by traders.

Salim said to curb this menace, son and the association together have agreed to create various committees; the substandard committee and the industrialisation committee to work together, because most of these importers, where they import their products from, the factories are nothing to write home about, that the importer could do the same factory in Nigeria and make more money.

“We are going to walk around to sensitise people telling them what the right things are, and also for those people who are breaking the rules, with the help of ASPAMDA, we will be able to take away their products and teach them how to make their products better,” he assured.

“Also because we are recently having this AfCFTA in the country, African Free Trade means, if you have the products here in ASPAMDA with SON certification, you can take that product all the way from Niger to Algeria, go back down South to Kenya, to South Africa and nobody will question you.

“On the other way, if your product is not up to standard, people from those countries can bring their own substandard products in to our country and spoil our market for us, so it is very important that we understand keeping to standards and following quality is our friend, it’s not our enemy,” he said.

The SON boss told them that even if they are importing from whichever country, the best thing to do is to look for the organisation’s office and take that product to them to get the SON Conformity Assessment Programme (SONCAP) certificate as there is this in place.

The same advice he gave to those manufacturing locally too, that they should endeavour to get the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP), that when all these are done, nobody would harass them.

“When you are importing your products from wherever it is you are importing, we have a conformity assessment programme where in any part of the world, you can take that product to our offices there, people represent us, and they will give you the SONCAP certificate, “ he said.

Emeka Duru, Senior Special Adviser to the DG, SON earlier in his opening speech, said the purpose of the event was to sensitise the auto dealers, according to him, “We have been going round the country to conduct sensitisation programme to get both the importer and manufacturers to be abreast with standards.

“The job of SON is to ensure that only standard and quality products are imported into this country, and this we can achieve through the instrumentality of standadisation and quality assurance. “I know that after today most of you will find SON more accessible Duru emphasised that SON organised the firm to enlightened and empowered the Stakeholders’ on import guidelines.”

Equally on his part, Ngozi Emechebe, ASPAMDA President in his speech commended Mallam Farouk Salim style of management for identifying with small business.

He noted that small businesses are the engine room for economic growth.

“The man we have been waiting for, he is here with a very loaded message to his people, he is not for locking up your warehouses, harassing you in the market, but he has come here to interact with us, to hear our plights, to see how he can assist us better, if others are doing this way, I believe there shall be no problems anywhere.

“He is here on ground to educate us more about SON, and I believe at the end of this programme we shall all be happy and do business through Standardisation.”

As for Engineer Felix Nyado, SON Director Marketing, who spoke on the theme: “Expanding Frontiers of Auto Spare Parts Sector Via Standardisation ‘’.

Engineer Felix Nyado, Director Marketing, who spoke in a slide show presentation with topic ‘Expanding Frontiers of Auto Parts and Machinery Sector Via Standardisation said the synergy will boost the agency efforts in sanitizing the market.

“The effort will help in carrying out enforcement, making seizure and correction on products when need arises.”

Engineer Olakekan Omoniyi, Deputy Director, SONCAP, SON who equally shed light on ‘Import, Conformity Assessment Requirements to Ensure Conformance to Standards.’

Engineer Ugbaja, spoke on Role of Stakeholders’ Collaboration Against Products Cloning and Counterfeiting.’

Most of the participants urged DON to replicate the awareness in major markets across the country.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of certificates of participation to over 630 participants that attended the programme.

  • WHO urges Nigeria to invest in public transport

WHO urges Nigeria to invest in public transport

The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the need for Nigeria to invest in public transport infrastructures in order to prevent more deaths on its roads and more traffic in its cities.

The Leader of the Safety and Mobility Unit in the Department for the Social Determinants of Health, World Health Organization, Nhan Tran disclosed this while speaking with The Nation during the Global Meeting of the Network of Heads of National Road Safety Agencies in Sweden.

According to him, one of the challenges facing the mobility and transport system in Nigeria is equating mobility and transport with cars adding that if every household in Nigeria has a car, the traffic would be beyond imagination and there would be more deaths on the roads.

Tran noted that the government should invest more in public buses and trains that can move from one part of a city to other cities or within a city adding that it would further reduce congestion and pollution on the roads.

“We should be looking at public transport mass transit, having the train or public buses within and outside the cities as a sign of progress and development. Because I think unless we start to think about the problem in that way, we are going to continue to have more cars and more motorcycles and I can assure you that there would be more deaths, more crashes, and more injuries.

Read Also: Those who should be in MDAs’ boards, by experts

“And on top of that, there will be more congestion on Nigerian roads and more pollution. So it is time to start thinking about the problem in a holistic way and to look at it not only as a problem of road safety but to also start to think about it as a problem of mobility and how the government can ensure access to safe and efficient mobility.

“Government must start to make real investments in public infrastructure for public transport and mass transit because that is a sign of progress,” he said.

The Leader of the Safety and Mobility Unit further called on the government to acknowledge the motorcycle operators and drivers as it would go a long way in helping the transportation system in the country.

“The solution is not to ban them but to acknowledge them and regulate them. I think the first step in regulating them would be to recognize them as legitimate operators in the transport system because they occupy a space within the transport system.

“The government’s job is not to judge them but to look at ways they operate to make it safer. And I believe that if we approach most of the issues that we have in that way, I think we would go a bit further. The solution is to ensure that these tricycle operators are operating in a way that is safer for the passengers and themselves.”

He then urged the government that when redesigning the mobility and transport systems, they should ensure that it meets the needs of everybody especially as women, men, and children have very different needs.

Rite Foods Limited, the top food and beverage company in Nigeria, joins Muslims in celebrating Eid-el-Kabir this year while urging them to always preserve Islamic principles and refresh with its brands, which are known for their high quality.

The organisation also exhorts Muslim faithful in Nigeria and around the world to constantly exhibit qualities that would result in a peaceful and united country and a world where everyone lives in harmony, despite ethnic and religious differences.

The feast of sacrifice, also known as Eid-al-Adha, commemorates the sacrificial honour bestowed upon the Holy Prophet Ibrahim when, in a dream, Allah commanded him to sacrifice his son Isma’il as an act of submission to Him, and it is observed at the conclusion of the hajj pilgrimage to the Holy Land in Mecca by hundreds of millions of Muslims.
