PROGRESSIVE Coalition has organised a seminar for youths to canvass support for Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday.

The talk gave youths opportunity to say their grievances with the governor.

Director-General, Saheed Balogun, said the group believed in the youth, hence the need to clear misconceptions they might have.

He urged them to shun fake news and be upright.

Former Lagos State Chairman of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Samuel Owoseni, noted messages on social media were not properly “fumigated and checked” which has led to wide circulation of fake news.

“… we realised social media platform has been another hemisphere for youths to engage and interact but we’ve discovered most messages on social media are fake news and youths are misinformed. There is need to engage youths and correct the misinformation.

A businessman, Kelvin Adeshina, said youths misunderstood Sanwo-Olu during the #EndSARS rally.

Adeshina debunked claims the governor sent soldiers to attack protesters..

He described Sanwo-Olu as a pro-youth governor, who has done a lot to better lives of youth.

A participant and graduate of Lagos State University (LASU), Happiness Samuel, said Sanwo-Olu is a active and listening governor, noting the alleged shooting during #EndSARS changed perception of youths on his administration.

Tinubu will surpass predecessors’s feats, says Odesanya

The secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Lanre Sunmi Odesanya has said that President-elect Bola Tinubu will perform better than his predecessors because he is a democrat.

Unpaid poll stipends: IG confirms bank payment

Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, has urged officers yet to receive their election allowances to remain calm.

Baba spoke in Abuja at a meeting with police managers and management of defaulting banks responsible for the delay in payment.

A statement by Force spokesman,   Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said this was in furtherance of the IGP’s passion to address the alleged delay or non-payments of personnel’s election allowances.

Police Accountant and Budgets Department said  the banks had been credited as schedules of payment were dropped with banks, before February 25 poll.

The statement said commencement for payment of the second tranche for Saturday elections would be paid as from yesterday.

The Police had, last Friday, reaffirmed that non-payment should not be ascribed to it.

Adejobi said: “We are not unaware of antics of some mischief makers peddling false publications through their paid bloggers bent on dragging the Force in the mud for flimsy issues.”

Aondoakaa: my interview on Arise TV was distorted

    • ‘I hold Tinubu in high esteem’

FORMER Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mike Aondoakaa, has said his interview with Arise TV was highly distorted.

In a statement in Makurdi, Benue State, by his Special Assistant, Abdul Kohol, Aondoakaa said he decided to make clarifications, following ‘’misconceptions and distortions peddled on social media…’’

“In the March 3 interview, the TV anchor sought Aondoakaa’s opinion on a candidate winning 25 per cent of valid votes of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as a condition, among others, before being declared winner of the presidential election.

“Aondoakaa said the Supreme Court in 2008, gave interpretations as regards the conjunction ‘and’ joining the larger part of the subsection with the smaller part of; which the Supreme Court held to be ‘conjunctive’ in view of the words used in Section 146 (1) of the Electoral Act, 2006, and not ‘disjunctive’; however, Supreme Court has a right to depart from its previous decision, depending on the facts of each case.

“At no time did Aondoakaa stated that it was wrong for Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to have declared president-elect, Bola Ahmed, winner of the presidential election.

“Aondoakaa said since the matter is in court, it will be sub judice to delve further into it.

“Aondoakaa further clarified during the interview that decisions of Supreme Court are based on facts/merits of the each case before it.

“The TV anchor never asked about validity of the declaration of the winner of the presidential election nor about swearing-in of the winner; and Aondoakaa never alluded to that effect.

“It is mischief and/or ignorance on anyone that tries to introduce untruth in the interview. Such persons should look for another avenue to pour vituperation on the poll processes.

“Aondoakaa could not have said more, being aware of the position of the law, that ‘election results are presumed by law to be correct until the contrary is proved’.

“… there is a rebuttable presumption that results of election declared by a Returning Officer are correct and authentic and the burden is on the person who denies the results to rebut the presumption.’ See Omoboriowo vs Ajasin (1984) 1SCNLR 108; Jalingo v. Nyame (1992) 3NWLR (Pt. 231) 538 and Buhari v. Obasanjo (2005) 7 SC (Pt. 1) 1…per Niki Tobi.”

He added: “Aondoakaa holds the president-elect, and the Judiciary in high esteem, and will never comment on matters before the courts…”

Stanbic IBTC Bank funds RSA-backed mortgage

Stanbic IBTC Bank, a subsidiary of Stanbic IBTC Holdings, has been named one of the banks to process Retirement Savings Account (RSA)-backed mortgages by Pension Commission (PenCom).

The RSA-Backed mortgage initiative of the Pension Commission allows contributors to use up to 25 per cent of their contribution as equity to purchase a home in their area. This is coming barely two years after the commission launched the transfer window initiative.

In seeking opportunities to help contributors get more value from their contribution ahead of their retirement, the commission has partnered financial institutions such as Stanbic IBTC Bank to make funds available to verified contributors to buy homes while using part of their RSA balance as equity contribution.

Stanbic IBTC has reaffirmed its commitment to the growth of the real estate sector in alleviating the housing challenge in the urban and sub-urban regions of the country; with the commencement of the validation process for RSA holders who have shown interest in the home loan.

Head, Consumer, and High Networth Clients, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Olu Delano, stated that this opportunity aligns with the bank’s strategic focus of enabling Nigerians to live a better life and making dreams possible for clients. In this case, the vision is accomplished by providing affordable loan solutions to meet housing needs and supporting pension contributors in extracting value from their contributions before retirement.

He said: “Housing is one of the basic human needs, and in Nigeria, home ownership is a real challenge for many individuals and families. Therefore, Stanbic IBTC is supporting PenCom to help bridge the accessibility gap.

“We want to provide affordable loan solutions for our customers and Nigerians to meet their basic and business needs, one of which is housing for residential and business use,” he added.

  • Why Tinubu won, by Omisore

    Why Tinubu won, by Omisore

    • ‘Poll transparent, peaceful’

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretary Senator Iyiola Omisore has explained why the presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, won the February 25 poll.

He said Tinubu is popular nationwide, stressing that the spread of his votes across the six geo-political zones spoke volumes about his national acceptance.

Omisore, a former deputy governor of Osun State, also said the election was free, fair, peaceful and transparent, dismissing the allegations of malpractices as a russ.

He said it is typical of the losers to cry foul during the periodic election, in a bid to discredit a lawful, legitimate and credible poll.

The party official wondered why the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), whose candidates are crying foul, have remained subjective in their analyses.

He expressed surprise that they turned their eyes from their strongholds, which they won handsomely, only to focus on the vast areas won by the ruling party.

The national secretary said an election where the president, national chairman of party, director-general of campaign and presidential candidate lost their home states cannot be described as a rigged poll.

Omisore spoke with reporters at the party secretariat in Abuja, shortly after he received a letter of felicitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping to the President-elect, Tinubu, on behalf of the party.

The letter was brought by the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchun.

He maintained that the poll satisfied the criteria of fairness, transparency and credibility, urging the opposition parties to embrace the reality.

He said maturity demanded that those who lost should accept their fate and congratulate the winner in accordance with the peace accord signed by the political parties and candidates.

Omisore said APC owed its victory to party unity, the team spirit, the support of President Muhammadu Buhari, the resilience of the party leadership, the courage of the candidate, determination of party faithful, and collective wish of the majority of Nigerians.

He said why the APC went into the poll as a united party, LP and PDP were in disarray.

Omisore stressed:”Everybody knew that people were leaving the PDP. Those five governors who did not leave distanced themselves from their presidential candidate. They went into the election in disunity. How cam they win. Nigerians have spoken.”

The party secretary said other struggling parties should copy the cordial relations that permeated the ruling party, particularly among the party leaders.

Omisore applauded the commitment of the APC governors to zoning and power shift, stressing that it has further strengthened the bond of unity between the North and the South.

He said the move to discredit the successful and peaceful poll will fail because it is erected on propaganda and falsehood by a gang of losers.

Omisore congratulated Tinubu for displaying the noblest examples of courage, hope and determination to succeed, despite the odds.

He said why the PDP candidate thought that he would win because he came from a certain part of the country, he miscalculated.

Omisore also said the poll has also taught Nigeria the big lesson that ethnicity and religion should not determine the outcome of national elections.

He said the results have revealed Tinubu as a unifier and symbol of unity and integration with a mass appeal.

Omisore said Tinubu triumphed based on some factors, urging ambitious members of the political class to study his styles of politics and capacity for building networks.

He added:”Asiwaju was up and doing and he dominated the scenes; the campaigns, from the period preceeding the primaries to the last day if the campaigns. He was the most visible among the presidential candidates. He traversed the nooks and crannies of the country, selling his ideas and plans.

“He had the best, most appealing and captivating blue print. He was not alone. He demonstrated to Nigerians that he would foster inclusion. Look at the campaign council. It was representative of all the segments in the party, ethnic groups, and geo-political zones. It was a string team. He won because majority of Nigerians preferred him. They want him to replicate his feats as governor of Lagos State at the federal level. He will not disappoint Nigerians.”

  • Court summons Wike, PDP, INEC over March 11 polls in Rivers

Court summons Wike, PDP, INEC over March 11 polls in Rivers

The Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, has summoned Governor Nyesom Wike, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to appear before it.

The court sought to know why it should not grant a motion ex parte seeking suspension of next Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections and Executive Orders 21 and 22.

The motion ex parte was filed by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its governorship candidate in the state, Chief Tonte Ibraye.

In the motion, the applicants asked the court to give an order restraining the state government from enforcing its Executive Orders 21 and 22 enacted in 2022.

The plaintiffs said the orders, if given, should subsist pending the determination of the motion on notice.

Though the suit was initially filed in Abuja, it was returned to the Port Harcourt judicial division of the court.

Presiding judge, Justice A. T. Mohammed, yesterday averred that upon reading the 13-paragraph affidavit deposed to by Solomon Shoyemi and after hearing from the applicant’s lawyer, H. V. Chukure, he asked the applicants to put the respondents on notice to appear on March 8.

He said: “The applicant shall put the respondents on notice to appear on March 8, 2023 at 1 p.m and show cause why the application should not be granted.”

The ADC had instituted the substantive suit to challenge the legality of the Executive orders and their attendant consequences on the electioneering process and political atmosphere in the state.

The suit, dated February 21, 2023, claimed that the implementation of the orders “created a total case of disorder, political crisis and wanton breach of peace in the political atmosphere of Rivers State”.

It added: “This has hampered the ability of the first plaintiff (Ibraye) and members of the second plaintiff (ADC) as well as other political parties except the third defendant (PDP) from assembling freely to carry out political activities, such as campaigning, holding rallies, processions and meetings within the state.

“There is a reason to believe that a serious breach of peace is likely to break out in Rivers, if the fourth defendant proceeds with its plans to conduct the forthcoming governorship election scheduled to hold on March 11 in Rivers,” they said.

According to the plaintiffs, in the interests of justice and fairness, INEC should be restrained from conducting the election, pending the determination of the substantive suit.
