  • I’ve brought home World Cup, says Tinubu

I’ve brought home World Cup, says Tinubu

President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on Sunday returned to Lagos in a blaze of glory, describing his Certificate of Return as a World Cup he had brought home.

Bubbling with excitement, he thanked Nigerians for voting for him, assuring that he will not disappoint them.

Tinubu, who stormed the palace of the Eleko of Lagos, Oba Akiolu, thanked the monarch and other community leaders for their support and prayers.

Speaking in Yoruba , he said: “This certificate that I brought home is our own World Cup.”

Oba Akiolu, who hugged the President-elect, wished him an eventful tenure.

The monarch described him as a special breed “who is destined for leadership at the very top.”

Oba Akiolu added: “Asiwaju, Lagos will not forget you. You did all your best to serve Lagos and you served excellently. I know you have enemies; all our ancestors had too. So, were all the prophets. “Some are even enemies of God that created us. But, I know that our forefathers will fight your battles. God will grant you victory and Nigeria will be great under you.”

Tinubu arrived to a tumultuous welcome at the presidential wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja in the afternoon.

He was received by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu, Chief of Staff Tayo Ayinde, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and other top All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders.

The train later proceeded to the Iga-Iduganran Palace where the Oba Akiolu, other traditional rulers and white cap chiefs were already waiting.

  • Liverpool smash seven past shambolic Man Utd

Liverpool smash seven past shambolic Man Utd

Liverpool delivered the complete performance and Mohamed Salah became the club’s record Premier League goalscorer as Manchester United were overwhelmed at a joyous Anfield.

United’s renaissance under manager Erik ten Hag already has the tangible reward of the Carabao Cup but Liverpool unleashed a brutal reality check on their progress with a severe thrashing.

Liverpool took control of what had been a tight game, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford missing presentable chances, when former Old Trafford target Cody Gakpo applied a smooth finish to Andy Robertson’s perfect pass two minutes before the break.

The second half was a tale of sheer joy for Liverpool and unrelenting misery for United, starting after 47 minutes when Darwin Nunez’s header diverted Harvey Elliott’s driven cross past goalkeeper David de Gea.

Salah bamboozled Lisandro Martinez to play in Gakpo for another classy finish three minutes later before the Egyptian resumed his long-time role of United tormentor by getting on the scoresheet himself.

Salah ended a swift counter-attack by lashing a finish high past De Gea and the rout continued as Nunez flashed another header in from Jordan Henderson’s cross.

Salah then scrambled in the sixth to become Liverpool’s highest Premier League goalscorer with 129, passing Robbie Fowler. He is also Liverpool’s highest marksman against Manchester United with 11 – and 10 of those have come in his past five encounters.

And in a fitting finish, Roberto Firmino – who has announced he is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season – completed a remarkable game by making it 7-0 from close range.

Liverpool are now an ominous presence in the chase for the Champions League places, standing only three points behind Tottenham with a game in hand. (BBC)

  • China’s crude oil imports to rise

China’s crude oil imports to rise

China’s crude oil imports could rise to as high as 11.8 million barrels per day.

The country will also build two new refineries with a combined  processing capacity of 520,000 bpd of crude oil this year. The new refineries coming online are to raise  crude  imports in the world’s top importer to a record-high this year, industry consultants told Reuters.

Chinese crude oil imports could increase to average as high as 11.8 million barrels per day (bpd) this year, rising by between 500,000 bpd and one million bpd, according to Energy Aspects, FGE, S&P Global Commodity Insights, and Wood Mackenzie.

This would reverse the decline of 2021 and 2022 and beat the record of an average 10.8 million bpd in yearly crude oil imports from 2020.

The Chinese reopening will drive a jump in gasoline and jet fuel demand, while diesel demand is also expected to rise due to economic growth and infrastructure construction growth, according to analysts from the four consultancies briefed by Reuters.

Moreover, Chinese refineries are raising utilisation rates due to lower-cost crude and a surge in demand after the reopening, a state oil official told Reuters.

China will also see this year the start-up of two new refineries with a combined capacity to process 520,000 bpd of crude, which should also drive imports higher.

Uncertainties over the fuel export quotas going forward is a factor clouding the outlook, according to the analysts.

Global oil demand is set to increase by two million bpd this year, pushed up by growth in Chinese consumption after the reopening, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said earlier this week as it raised its 2023 demand growth estimate by 100,000 bpd from last month’s forecast.

China’s resurgent oil demand – with growth seen at 900,000 bpd this year – and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region will dominate global growth, the IEA said in its closely-watched Oil Market Report on Wednesday.

“China accounts for nearly half the 2 mb/d projected increase this year, with neighbouring countries also set to benefit after Beijing ditched its zero-Covid policies,” the IEA.

  • Domestic gas utilisation: NLNG intensifies action on planned 1.1m tons supply

Domestic gas utilisation: NLNG intensifies action on planned 1.1m tons supply

The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited has assured that it is committed to actualising its plan of supplying its product, the LNG, to the domestic market as part of its contribution to the growth of domestic gas utilisation.

The Manager, Common Facilities Assets, NLNG, Mr. Lateef Biobaku, gave the hint at a panel session in Lagos.

To actualise this target, the firm said its offtakers of the product -Asiko Power Limited, Bridport Energy Limited and Gas-Plus Synergy Limited – were constructing their receiving infrastructure in Apapa and Lekki Free Zone in readiness for the commencement of supply.

Recall that in June 2021, the NLNG had assured it would begin domestic LNG supply a year later, adding that it had signed Sales and Purchase Agreements (SPAs) with three power firms as offtakers.

Biobaku reassured that the firm remained committed to delivering LNG to the market as its partners were constructing their receiving facilities which has had some delays due to some constraints in the industry.

“But nevertheless, we are working with them to make sure that they deliver to their promises. Coincidentally, a team of NLNG officials are in Lagos going to visit those facilities to make sure that everything is on track. They have been to Apapa and would also be going to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, just to make sure that those companies fulfil their promises,” Biobaku said.

The company has a six-train LNG processing plant in Bonny Island, Rivers State, with total 22 million tones per annum (22mtpa) and 5mtpa of Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) capacity. It is also building the seventh train capable of raising its LNG production capacity to 30mtpa.

NLNG has dedicated 100 per cent of its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) production to the market to  encourage local utilisation of the cleaner energy source, reduce importation of the product and save foreign exchange.

  • Towards zero emission

    Towards zero emission

To actualise government’s goal of net zero emission by 2060, stakeholders in the industry have expressed their commitment to partner with government and others in bringing the initiative to fruition, AMBROSE NNAJI reports.

It was a gathering of eggheads in the industry. The mission was to chart a new course for the sector, especially in the area of exploring efforts aimed at ending emission from operational activities.

Attaining zero emission has become a burning issue in global oil and gas industry, especially with the global attention now turned to attaining cleaner energy, which has, as a critical factor, the attainment of net zero emission.

Net zero emission simply applies to a situation where global greenhouse gas emissions from human activity are in balance with emissions reductions. At net zero, carbon dioxide emissions are still generated, but an equal amount of carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere as is released into it, resulting in zero increase.

It was, therefore, instructive when TotalEnergies, a major player in the country’s oil sector, disclosed that its path to net zero emission would involve investment in renewable energies. It would also involve investments in gas developments as gas would serve as transition energy, as well as producing low emission oil as it eliminates routine gas flaring.

Speaking at the just-concluded Sub-Saharan Africa International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (SAIPEC), in Lagos, the Managing Director, TotalEnergies Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited, Mr. Mike Sangster, said their plastic recycling plant in Port Harcourt eliminates about 750, 000 cubits of C02 yearly, which is equivalent to planning 4,500 trees. He said the company has made important investments in these areas and implemented several initiatives that are impacting the energy landscape positively.

Sangster noted that in recent years, the company’s projects in Nigeria had been certified with the objective of driving down its green-house gas emissions; and pursuing a zero-flare principle on its new projects as is evident with OML58 Upgrade, Ofon Phase 2, Egina, and Ikike.

He said the company’s investment in the Nigerian Liquefied and Natural Gas (NLNG) since inception is partly derived from its commitment to the production of cleaner and better energy.

According to him, of its over 530 service stations across the country, more than 112 have been solarised. He noted it’s an ongoing programme to ensure that its stations become fully solarised, adding that the company has also deployed over 150 residential solar solutions across the country.

The MD said over 1.5 million people in the country had been impacted from the sale of 400,000 TotalEnergies solar lamps since 2013, according to Global Lighting Off-grid Association estimates; worldwide, 10 million people have been impacted, he added.

SAIPEC, in its seventh edition, was hosted by the Petroleum Technology Association of Nigeria (PETAN) with the strategic partners – the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited, Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), and the GEP. It had as its theme: “Harnessing a Sustainable African Energy Industry through Partnerships”.

Sangster, who was represented by the Deputy Managing Director, TotalEnergies in Nigeria, Victor Bandele, noted the industry occupies an advantaged position in the energy transition in Africa, adding it has the finance, the people, technology, and  experience.

He said TotalEnergies will be known as the responsible energy giant in Africa linked to the development of natural resources, the strength of its network, and its strategic investment in renewable energy. He added the company will also be known on the continent as the partner of choice for its ability to connect with its customers.

According to him, the company’s ambition included an approach to fossil energies focusing on value by selecting low-cost developments that are the most efficient in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, reaching the top three companies worldwide in low-carbon liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), and setting the standard for decarbonising the oil and gas value chains.

Others are profitable investment to become one of the top five producers of renewable electricity (wind and solar) in the world, becoming a leader in the mass production of clean hydrogen, being a partner in its customers’carbon neutrality as well as being recognised in the market for electric mobility as in fuel distribution.

Sangster said the company will continue to maintain its competitive advantage on technical costs, and gett the maximum from its assets through operational excellence.

Again, it will deliver projects on time and within budget insisting new projects must be compliant with low carbon footprint.

Meanwhile, TotalEnergies has said it will end the Routine Gas flaring  this year.

Bandele, who made this known this during the panel session, said the company had come to stay. The deputy managing director, Deepwater Assets of Total Upstream Companies of Nigeria, noted that TotalEnergies plays important role in gas exploration.

Bandele said Total changed its name to TotalEnergies to incorporate the entities of the future, noting that TotalEnergies has diversified to Solar Energy Business.

He, however, called on the government to create the enabling environment for gas exploration across Africa.

He said: “We are identifying new opportunities in Nigeria. TotalEnergies is also playing active role in marketing and production as it has 550 filling stations in Nigeria,” adding Africa is a part of the world that needs energy the most.

“Our niche speaks volumes. The growth that we want to give is  around the issues of energy. We have focused on exploration and production, and we have focused on marketing and distribution. There’s no state in Nigeria that does not have the presence of TotalEnergies. We are part owners and suppliers of gas to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), and so we are present in the upstream, we are present in the midstream and we are present in the downstream.’’

He said the company’s strategy is first to consolidate on what it knows how best to do.

According to him, TotalEnergies has been working on a chain of energy supply to grow deeper with solar technology, adding that there are examples where the company is doing solar in Africa.

“We are distributing solar energy already in Nigeria, we are looking at new opportunities that are enormous. TotalEnergies has been here for long, so we are here to stay, we are here to consolidate on our business, we are here to grow and we are here for the new opportunities, especially in renewable energies,” Bandele submitted.

The Managing Director, Shell Nigeria Gas, President, Nigeria Gas Association, Mr. Ed Ubong, said Shell Nigeria gas is 100 per cent subsidiary that are involved in the domestic distribution of gas.

He said the progress the company has made since 2016 with increased domestic gas supply by over 150set focused on three key states – Abia, Rivers and Ogun – and a combined network of over 150km.

He said the company is expanding and by the time this is completed, Shell will be adding 1000mw of power that will enable the access to energy to the people.

  • Aviation sector concession should follow due process

Aviation sector concession should follow due process

Following the planned concession by the Federal Government, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said  nobody can take over the aviation industry without following the due process.

NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero gave the assurance in Lagos during a visit to the Association Nigeria Aviation Professionals.

Ajaero warned that any operator in the industry who refuses unionism would be dealt with. He  mentioned Air Peace Airline and Ibom Airline  as airlines discoraging unionism,

Recall that the Federal Government planned 17 airports for concession.

The had said the airports under the management of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) that are not up for concession would be given to concessionaires.

Reacting to the challenges facing the industry, Ajaero said the issue of concession could not be done without paying the workers’ entitlement.

He urged the workers not to listen to whoever that wants to take over the industry, saying that such move is a joke.

“Don’t panic about the concession of the airport, whatever they have done now is void ab-initio.

“As the minister in charge of aviation and essential service, he should be careful and sensitive to the challenges of the industry.

Also, the NLC President said there was no need for Nigeria to have a national carrier, saying the nation cannot depend on the foreign carriers.

Earlier, the General Secretary of Association Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), Comrade Saidu Rasaq, complained of bad management in the industry.

According to him, “we have written to the National Assembly, but nothing has been done. Please we need NLC to intervene and help us”.

On the issue of airport concession, he said if the plan worked out, it would lead to job loss.

Ajaero also visited Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN).

Ajaero, who took note of the union’s challenges, promised to work with them in order to serve Nigerian workers better.

  • NLC to abolish casualisation

    NLC to abolish casualisation

    • Promises to fight anti-labour governors

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has promised to fight casualisation to a stand still.

However, it assured workers of better welfare, considering the  challenges in the country.

Speaking during his visit to the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees (NUCFRLANMPE) and other unions in Lagos,  NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the congress would fight casualisation, outsourcing or any other policy  that is undermining the welfare of workers. Just as he pledged to take the welfare of workers seriously.

Ajaero said trade unionism is gradually facing extinction as a result of causalisation, out-sourcing, hence NLC would fight to ensure that the issue of casualisation is reduced to the barest minimum, if not eliminated

He lamented that workers have been reduced to slaves through contract and casual employment.

According to him, some workers earn as little as N15,000 with no conditions of service, medicare and pension.

“All these things, we are going to face squarely. Most employers don’t allow workers to belong to unions. It is only when you belong to a union that your interest and welfare will be catered for. All those issues will be tackled.

“Some of the unions are at the point of extinction because of workplace tyranny. We have to put a stop to it. If we do that and empower the unions, make them strong and vibrant, then they will be in a position to serve their members.

“Note that whatever is affecting the Nigerian worker is also affecting the NLC. This is a burden that the NLC must carry.

“Then the issue of minimum wage, the pay that cannot take you home. When you compare the minimum wage with the cost of living, it cannot balance up. So, these are some of the issues that we will have to contend with as a movement,” he said.

Ajaero said that the congress is also ready to fight anti-labour governors for neglecting their welfare.

“This is not an era that any governor will insult us. Any governor or anybody that wants to punish workers should be ready for war because we will not allow it. We are out for serious business. All inhuman working conditions or anti-labour activities, most especially from the governors, will no longer be acceptable.

“Many organisations have been destroyed as a result of anti-labour policies. Workers are always at the receiving end. Workers create wealth and it time for us to also enjoy the wealth.

Ajaero said the congress is ready to engage incoming government. He said the workers are ready to be involve in the governance .

” We will engage any government to come up and the era of sitting down and be looking is over.  No time for patience or laziness again. We are ready to take out rightful place and that is why we are going to engage which ever government that takes over.

Ajaero,  who vowed not fail workers and people, said the leadership of the congress would seek platforms to lift them from the shackles of poverty.

“We will not betray that trust! We are committed to pursuing the interests and desire of workers and, by extension, the majority of the masses.

“We, therefore, pledge our loyalty to the NLC, workers, the masses and Nigeria. Our thoughts and our actions shall be propelled by this avowal,” Ajaero said.

Earlier, the President of NUCFRLANMPE, Comrade Goke Olatunji, lamented that anti-workers practices such as casualisation, contract staffing were the major challenges facing the sector.

He said these had affected the sector negatively. He also said the various government policies had caused havoc in the sector

Olatunji said: “Without sounding immodest, the economic situation in Nigeria is not business-friendly. The instability occasioned by either lack of economic policy framework or unclear economic policy direction and or ineffective implementation of the economic policies is having their tolls on the manufacturing sector of our dear nation.

“It is imperative to discuss and understand the state of Nigeria’s economy and come up with adequate approach to cope with the resultant effects. These effects are evident in the evolution of strange practices in industrial relations like casualisation, contract-staffing, outsourcing, indiscriminate restructuring, and redundancy.

Meanwhile, The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria(PENGASSAN) has pledged to curb casualisation in the oil and gas industry.

Its President, Comrade  Festus Osifo, described casualisation as modern slavery.

He said casualisation had become a menace in the sector.

“This is a message of hope for workers that have not been enjoying the joy of working. The first step is to address casualisation in the industry is to through unionisation of the workers that will give them sense of belonging.

“And this will make the task of advocating for such workers much easier. The goal of the unions is in line with accordance with International Labour Organisations (ILO),” Osifo said.

  • ‘Attacking bank facilities, workers’ll worsen cash scarcity crisis’

‘Attacking bank facilities, workers’ll worsen cash scarcity crisis’

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees (NUBIFIE) has advised Nigerians against attacking bank facilities and workers, saying that bank workers are not responsible for the scarce new naira notes, neither are they exacerbating the crisis by hiding or refusing to load the new notes in the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs).

At a briefing, NUBIFIE National President, Comrade  Abakpa Anthony, warned that the continued attacks on banks and their staff members would force his union to direct workers to stay away from work, and that this would worsen the situation.

He maintained that bank workers were afraid of going to work because of the threat to their lives.

“We are worried about the violent attacks on banks and our members by extension. It is also worrisome the news people are  saying that banks and their workers are withholding money. It is not true.

“There is no possible way the CBN will release money and banks and their staff will refuse to load the ATMs. Bankers are not the reason  there is cash scarcity neither are they withholding the money from Nigerians. In fact, they and their families are also suffering just like every other Nigerian.

“Attacking bank facilities and their workers who work so hard to render services to the citizens is very wrong. It is wrong for anybody to believe that bankers and the facilities are the reason there is no money in the ATMs or in the banks. The citizens should rather find a better way to express their grievances instead of unleashing mayhem on bank staff and facilities.”

Anthony added: “If the government hesitates any further to protect banks and our members, we may ask them to stay at home. We cannot continue going to work when our lives are not guaranteed. For somebody to go to work in fear of attack is not a situation we want to put our people into.

“We will call for a National Executive Council meeting of our union to deliberate and make a decision in view of the current situation to ask our members to stay off work.

“Already, a lot of critical assets of banks have been destroyed and we will not wait till our members are being killed before we take action.”

“We are also appealing to the government to take charge and balance the situation for good because of the masses. The masses are suffering. We urge the government to find a solution fast for the sake of lives and properties in the country. It is recognized that the policy will eventually be beneficial to our economy but right now, the people are suffering seriously.

He reiterated, “We call on Nigerians not to mete their anger on bank staff, the critical facilities of the banks nor on any other assets of the country. Because violent attacks will worsen the situation and sabotage the processes that will help bring the situation to normalcy. ”

“Now that President Buhari has directed that old N200 notes be rolled out to cushion the effects of the new notes scarcity, it will be wise if the CBN will massively make available the notes. It should be much available that every ATM should be working effectively. The CBN and other related government agencies should deploy all their powers and give their best to ensure that this issue does not snowball into a destructive crisis. A serious action and attention on the part of the government will reduce all the tension.

“We are appealing that the new and old naira notes should run concurrently while the CBN gradually withdraws the old notes from circulation.

“We appeal to Nigerians that it is not by violence they can air their view and frustration. Do not destroy bank facilities, it will affect you eventually. If you destroy bank facilities in your area, you will have to go somewhere else to do your transactions, which may cause you more, either time or money.

“We urged our members to thread with caution when going when going to work and closing.
