Benitez likens Osimhen to Fernando Torres

Former Napoli coach Rafael Benitez has likened Victor Osimhen to former Liverpool goal poacher Fernando Torres even as he tipped Napoli as title contender in this year’s UEFA Champions League (UCL).

Also, Arsenal midfielder Jorginho has said that he recommended the Nigerian ace for Napoli when contacted by the club’s sporting director.

“Osimhen reminds me of Torres; a very fast player with a strong header. But when we talk about Napoli, it’s not right to talk about a single player, the Azzurri’s work is a great team,” Benitez told Sky Sport.

He however, added: “Spalletti is an experienced coach; he wins and does it well. In a city where football is very popular, he is doing it very well. I told him they would win the championship, he said to me: ‘No, let’s not talk about it for superstition’. But in the end, I think it will go like this.

”The team is strong, they have a lot of confidence, I think they can make a good course. I don’t know where they will be able to go, but they have skills, qualities and an experienced coach. So I think they can go all the way,” he added.

“I played against Osimhen; Giuntoli called me first to pick him up and asked me about him. I replied: ‘Get him now!’, Because he had turned our defenders’ heads, he is a young man who promises a lot,” said Jorginho.

  • Adesanya’ needs time for Pereira’s rematch, says coach

Adesanya’ needs time for Pereira’s rematch, says coach

Israel Adesanya’s coach has admitted he wanted more time before the huge rematch with Alex Pereira at UFC 287 in April.

Pereira dethroned the middleweight champion with a fifth-round stoppage, claiming the belt from the man he’d beaten twice during his kickboxing days.

The Brazilian is the first fighter to beat Adesanya at middleweight and Eugene Bareman is tasked with helping him avenge the loss.

“In the UFC, we don’t have that choice and, quite frankly, Israel is 100 percent adamant that he must be the next person to fight Alex Pereira. Beyond all doubt.

“So much so that when they were talking about Pereira fighting—I can’t remember, it was for one particular card, I think they had no main event or they had someone pull out of a main event at the end of last year—so much so that when there was talk that Pereira was going to fight, Israel was like, ‘We’ll fight.”

“Before Israel had his surgery and everything, Israel was prepared to take the fight on four to five weeks’ notice if Pereira was willing to take the fight.”

Adesanya was beating Pereira on the scorecards up until the fifth-round stoppage back at UFC 281.

And some claimed the call from the referee to intervene came too early, not allowing ‘The Last Stylebender’ time to recover.

But Bareman is relieved no further damage was done.

He added: “You know my background, so I could quite possibly just have an innate feeling to err on the side of caution, but I believe the chances of Israel coming out of that without being further hurt were minimal. He was probably going to get hurt even more.

“And to that end, I’m glad he stopped it, because he prevented Israel from being damaged even further and we’re in the position now where we’re able to be healthy and have a second go of it, trying to beat that monster. I’m happy with the stoppage.”

Pereira remains inexperienced at the top level of MMA and questions remain over his wrestling and ground defence.

But against Adesanya, such a familiar foe, he can be confident in a striking battle that suits him to a tee.

The champion is a slight underdog with bookmakers but will feel he can make his power tell at some point over 25 minutes.

Whether Adesanya is more aggressive and tries to fight with fire is another matter altogether.

UCL: City’s De Bruyne misses Leipzig last 16 first leg

Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne will miss today’s Champions League last 16 first leg with RB Leipzig, after he was left out of his side’s squad for the game.

The Belgium midfielder was not in the 22-man squad tweeted by the English champions yesterday.

Speaking at his side’s pre-match press conference, Leipzig coach Marco Rose said City still posed a major threat despite the 31-year-old’s absence.

“I think Kevin is among the best players in the world. He sees space, he knows space and he’s dangerous in front of goal,” Rose told reporters “A lot goes through him in this team, but he will be replaced by someone world class.

“Man City work as a team, they are not individuals, a team will be on the field tomorrow – a team which wants to win the Champions League,” he added.

Leipzig said Spanish midfielder Dani Olmo would miss the match, while France forward Christopher Nkunku was in doubt and would, at best, start from the bench.

Egypt 2023: Flying Eagles in make or mar tie against Young Pharaohs

Flying Eagles will be gunning to get back on track in the ongoing Africa U20 Cup of Nations as they trade tackles with host nation Egypt on Matchday Day 2  tonight  at the Cairo International Stadium.

The Nigeria U20 men’s team lost narrowly to the Junior Teranga Lions of Senegal 0-1 in the opening game on Sunday but still stands a chance of qualifying for the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Coach Isah Ladan Bosso will likely be without midfielder Daniel Daga, who was substituted against Senegal due to injury he sustained during the encounter.

Despite the loss in the opening game, the Flying Eagles are upbeat they can upset the host nation and put their campaign back on track, as a win will put the team in good stead to qualify for the last eight.

The Flying Eagles boast of a rich pedigree in the competition with seven titles to their name while the Egyptians have won it four times.

The Young Pharaohs’’ game against Mozambique ended in stalemate on opening day and the host nation has only one point and will battle the Flying Eagles hard for the three points inside one of the biggest football arenas on the continent.

Kick-off time for today’s game is 7pm local  Egyptian time which is  6pm Nigerian  time.

  • Osimhen ponders over Napoli exit

    Osimhen ponders over Napoli exit

Manchester United target Victor Osimhen has refused to rule out leaving Napoli in the summer, giving Erik ten Hag a major boost on his quest for a top striker.

The £107m-rated striker has been in prolific form this season, racking up 19 goals and four assists in 23 appearances this season.

The Nigerian – along with Man United’s own striker Marcus Rashford – is one of the most promising forwards in world football at the moment, and Napoli will no doubt be attacked from all angles in the summer.

Osimhen is currently leading Napoli on a quest for their first Serie A title in 33 years, and although the 24-year-old remains focused in Italy, he refused to commit his future there.

“When you are doing so well, top clubs around the world are watching, mostly in the top five leagues,” Osimhen told ESPN.  “And to be able to attract interest from these top clubs shows that I am doing great and it gives me the motivation to do even more for myself and my team.

“But I am focused on Napoli right now and they have the final say. I just want to help my team to win matches and win trophies.

“At the end of the season, we will see what is going to happen, but that is not up to me. It is for the club to decide.”

Osimhen is currently on track to win the Serie A Golden Boot, with 18 of his 19 goals coming in the league, but the striker insists that he is not concerned about personal accolades.

“Being the highest goalscorer is actually not my main priority. The team comes first before my personal ambition,” he added.

“If I win it, that’s fine but what I want to do is try to win trophies with my team. As long as the team is winning, it doesn’t matter to me who gets the goals or whether I win top scorer or not.”

On Friday, Osimhen notched up his 100th  career goal in 197 games, a win over Sassuolo, which is faster than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo managed to do.

It was the seventh consecutive Serie A he had scored in – something no Napoli player has done since 1995.

Man United are understood to be launching a £107m summer bid for the 24-year-old, while they are also ready to swoop in for Harry Kane, as Ten Hag looks to fill the No 9 void that was left by Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure in November.

They will face stiff competition from Todd Boehly’s heavy-spending Blues who are also reportedly in the striker.

After our retirement 17 years ago, the management of the corporation paid part of our entitlement and refused to pay the remaining. Several letters had been written and efforts made to get our legitimate right but they were rebuffed by the management. Then, we engaged the service of a lawyer who wrote to ask for our money. The management replied our lawyer to forward the names and other information of his clients that they are owing. The names were sent to them, still the management refused paying. All these happened last year. The case was referred to EFCC in Jan 11 this year. We waited for EFCC to call us for investigation according to our lawyer, but when we did not hear from them, I went to their office on May 20, 2022 with a letter of reminder. The letter was refused, to my greatest surprise. I was told that EFCC declined to investigate the case of fraud brought against the railway management. Madam, I have the proof of ALL I have writing here. Pls, for further inquiry for publication my phone number is 08061224837. I would be glad if you can step in and look into our case.
