Police harassment: Rivers SDP to report perceived suspects to ICC

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Rivers State  has said it would  file a petition against perceived troubles of its members  before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

The party said, it is  in touch with the international community to that effect.

The party’s Governorship candidate , former Sen. Magnus Abe made this known   during a  rally and flag presentation to its candidates in Elekahia community, in  Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.

Abe has repeatedly complained about the harassment, intimidation, arrest, hurried arraignment and incarceration of members of SDP  on trump-up charges.

Last weekend, he  raised the alarm of unexplained police visits to the homes of some SDP leaders and various threat text messages for which he challenged the stste Police Commissioner,  Okon Effiong Okon to speak up on any offense, crime for which the Police is trailing and harrassing them, or stop forthwith such unprofessional policing style.

He said that the SDP had contacted the international community to intervene in the situation which he described as undemocratic and against the fundamental human rights of victims.

“We are in touch with the international community and they told us that anybody, any policeman who is used as an instrument of depravity to harass, lock up members of the SDP and sending them to prison on fake charges, we should bring their names so they will charge them before the International Criminal Court.

“ICC does not recognize any local immunity, ICC does not recognize whether you are a policeman or not”, he said.

, Abe  noted that the forthcoming elections would mark the end of politics for some persons he described middlemen in the state.

“All these big men you see, they are middlemen in politics. They are the ones making life difficult ur lives miserable. They are the ones making election expensive. They are the ones making it impossible for government to serve the people. This election will retire a lot of middlemen.

“The politics of Rivers State will be between the voters and the candidate. I am the candidate and you are the voters. We don’t need any big man to stand between me and you. We need those that will open up business opportunities so that you can make money”.he said.

The former Senator who represented the Rivers South East senatorial district described the Permanent Voters Cards(PVC), as the Peoples’ share of inheritance and that how they use it during the elections will determine the kind of future they will expect.

    He said, “We are going to use our PVCs to choose a better future for ourselves and our children. They are going to schools to give students indomie, students that cannot have good education, students that cannot get support, students that cannot have access to modern teaching facilities;

they are giving them indomie to go and vote for them on Saturday. Any student that will sell his birthright for indomie, na you sabi”.

In his remarks, SDP National Vice Chairman South South, Fred Owutorofa who represented the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam lauded the people for their consistent support to the party and its candidates.

“Your support is what will send us to the government house on the 11th of March”, he stated and urged them to cast their ballots for all the National Assembly candidates on the Saturday February 25, during the presidential and national assembly elections.

Abuja pastor apologises for preaching with AK-47

The Presiding Pastor of House on the Rock, Abuja, Pastor Uche Aigbe, has apologised to the congregation and Nigerians for mounting the pulpit with an unloaded AK-47 rifle.

On Sunday, according to a video posted on the church’s social media platform, the remorseful Aigbe said he was disappointed with himself for preaching with a firearm.

The embattled preacher caused a stir when he mounted the pulpit with the rifle to address the congregation on ‘Guarding the faith.’

The viral video clip of him brandishing an AK-47 rifle on the altar generated mixed reactions with some calling for his arrest by security agencies.

Aigbe was detained by police authorities in the Federal Capital Territory, which also arrested Chief Security Officer of the Church, Inspector Musa Audu, who it identified as the owner of the AK-47. On Sunday, the repentant Aigbe said: “This morning I stand before you with a deep sense of sobriety and contrition as I humbly address the event of last Sunday at the second service which most of us were part of, where I used an unloaded firearm to illustrate some texts from the Bible regarding the good fight of faith.”

“Of course, like you all know, it has caused a lot of embarrassment and pain to the entire church family, to you House on the Rock (The Refuge), to my immediate family and, of course, to myself. The decision that I made to use that firearm was not thoughtful. It has left me disappointed in myself. My action has been very traumatic for me, my family and, I am sure, for many of us. And I trust that we will never ever experience such again.”

On his decision to step down temporarily, he said: “To this end, I have consulted as necessary and with acceptable guidance from the senior leadership of the Church. And I would like to humbly ask for your permission to take some time to pray, meditate, reflect and also to heal from all of the things that happened and its consequence. Notwithstanding, I will always be in church on Sundays and Wednesdays to worship with you.

“Let me say that I bear no grudge against anybody in my heart. If I have offended you, please forgive me. God is God and He will always remain our Father.’’
