    Union decries Ndokwa marginalisation

The Secretary, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU), Chief Henry Okechukwu, has hailed a group, the Oluku Ndokwa Envoy aka Organised Ndokwa Efforts, on its outcry over the plight of Ndokwa nation, which he described as the second largest  homogenous entity in Delta State.

This was sequel to the efforts Chief Okechukwu said the group has been making to change the ugly narratives of Ndokwa people in the state and country,  the latest being a published advertorial (open letter to the President) on page 7 of the Vanguard newspaper of May 23, 2021, headlined: “Urgent Need to Act on Ndokwa’s Case.”

Okechukwu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who made this known in a statement in Asaba, the Delta State capital, said the Oluku Ndokwa envoy spoke the mind of Ndokwa nation in the advertorial, stating the fate of the people of Ndokwa land in the Nigerian federation.

He said the time has come for the government at the state and federal levels to give the Ndokwa people their dues and stop the deliberate marginalisation against the peace loving and hardworking people.

Okechukwu said on several occasions, NNU lamented Ndokwa’s fate in Delta State and Nigeria and cried out to the authorities.

He said: “Forces outside our control have continued to conspire to diminish our call for equity and justice in Nigeria.”

Okechukwu, a communications expert, stressed: “We hail the sons and daughters of Oluku Ndokwa Envoys-Initiative, who have decided to once more echo our cries on the grave injustices our people have endured. We are happy about the comprehensive and qualitative nature of the advert, which was evidence-based.

“What equally gladdens our hearts is the language used by our sons. They neither insulted the government, President Muhammadu Buhari, nor other leaders. They did not also quarrel with or display animosity against our neighbours – the Urhobo, Isoko, Itsekiri and Ijaw – who have been the beneficiaries of good patronage that are common to all of us. nother.

“We prevail on them, once again, to give peace a chance, in line with the age long stance of Ndokwa people.”

    ‘CAN goofed on Israeli-Palestinian conflict’

The Companion, an Association of Muslim Men in Businesses and Professions, yesterday described the recent statement by the National Secretary of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) accusing President Muhammadu Buhari of taking side with the Palestinians in the conflict with Israel as “unfortunate and condemnable.”

Its Lagos District Amir, Abdul-Ghani Abdul-Majeed, urged CAN leadership to always exercise constraints and issue statements based on facts instead of speculation and figments of their imagination.

“Though we are not spokesmen of President Muhammadu Buhari or the federal government, but, as a concerned organisation and stakeholder in Nigeria, we wish to say that CAN leadership is portraying Christianity as a religion of oppression and hypocrisy where might is right,” he said.

The CAN leadership, Abdul-Majeed, said failed to realise that the “conflict” in the Palestinian territory was not about religious fight between Islam and Christianity.

He said: “It is about genocide, oppression, apartheid, violation of human rights, injustice and economic domination being perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinians.

“The world has cried out against Israel and people of all races including Jews in diaspora, have held demonstrations in major cities of Europe, America and Asia, condemning the Israeli aggression and destruction of Palestinian territory and wanton bombing of children, women and the aged, as well as building housing media organisations such as Associated Press and Al-Jazeera.

“The leadership of CAN should not allow their dislike for Islam to justify and promote violence and crime against humanity. They should not be seen to be endorsing the killing of defenseless Palestinians, some of whom are Arab Christians. They should not be seen to be happy with violence as long as they are perpetrated by Jews whom CAN leadership is equating with Christians to deceive their followers in Nigeria. If CAN leadership does not know, it should be educated that the percentage of Palestinian Christians is more than the percentage of Israeli Christians.  We strongly advise CAN to stand up on the side of justice and humanity.”

Egbe task govt on sports infrastructure, roads

The Chief Executive Officer of Monimichelle Group, Ebi Egbe has called on the federal government to do something on the state of the roads in the country, declaring that the state of the Port Harcourt-Aba road is a bad advertisement for the country.

Pyramids FC of Egypt, during their recent trip to Nigeria for the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals clash with Enyimba of Aba, posted a video of their road trip from Port Harcourt to Aba calling it a shame.

Egbe whose outfit constructed the Enyimba stadium turf noted that the Egyptians deliberately wanted to paint the country in bad light by showing the video to the world.

Egbe was however quick to add that the government on its part also needs to avoid the country being embarrassed by her international visitors by fixing our roads.

“That video by Pyramids is to me, a wakeup call for us to not only fix our stadiums but also fix our roads. Teams that come to Aba to play have always commended the playing pitch. We need to get it right on all fronts. This is why I am appealing to the federal government to get our roads fixed. Our teams would return to the continent next term and it would be a shame if teams from other countries that are far less endowed come in and mock us that we’ve got no roads in the country,” Egbe said.

He further charged the various state governments to also upgrade their stadium facilities just like other countries are doing.

Israel-Palestinian conflict: Ex-youth international thanks fans after rocket attack

Former Nigerian footballer Ibezito Ogbonna has thanked fans of Hapoel Tel Aviv for their support after narrowly escaping death in Israel last week.

The fans have launched a fund-raising campaign to help Ogbonna, who scored 40 goals in 132 appearances for Israel’s second most successful side, and his family after their apartment in the Israeli city of Ashdod was hit by a rocket fired from Gaza last week.

Ogbonna, his wife and two young daughters were at home during the attack and although his family were unhurt, the former Kaizer Chiefs man was injured and taken to hospital following injuries sustained during the explosion that was part of a recent 15-day escalation in violence between Israel and Gaza.

The 38-year-old, who won the Israeli Cup with Hapoel Tel Aviv in 2006 and 2007, is still still remembered fondly by fans of The Red Demons, despite leaving the club 14 years ago.

“Hapoel Tel Aviv fans have been incredibly amazing, without my knowledge they had started a fundraising to help support me,” Ogbonna told BBC Sport Africa. “As soon as the news broke that my apartment was hit, they started reaching out and calling my phone. I didn’t ask them for anything yet they were offering to help.”

He continued: “I remember one of them got my contact and I think he put it out on the fan page for other supporters to reach out. Messages of love, prayers and unbelievable support from a club I left over a decade ago.

“Some were telling me to come over to theirs if I had no place to stay,” the former Enugu Rangers and Sharks of Port Harcourt striker added. “They’ve gone out to buy stuff and clothes for me and my family.

“I was getting deliveries of different things at the hotel without even knowing about it. I don’t even know these guys. It’s a massive love and I can’t thank them enough.

“It’s another proof that wherever you find yourself as a footballer or whatever you do. Be a good person and respect everyone because you never know when life will bring you back again.
