World Athletics Continental Tour: Amusan finishes second in hurdles

    By Olalekan Okusan

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan came second behind world record-holder Kendra Harrison in the  women’s 100m hurdles at  the Adidas Boost Boston Games  which was part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series.

Featuring four of the top six women in the world rankings , Harrison  finished first with 12.49secs as Amusan finished second to beat Christina Clemons, who took silver behind Harrison at the World Indoor Championships Birmingham 2018 to third place.

Meanwhile, .at the Wanda Diamond League season-opener in Gateshead, north-east of England, Blessing Okagbare finished fifth with a time of 11.57secs as Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith powered out of the blocks in the loaded 100m final and surged clear of the hitherto-burgeoning US speed queen Sha’Carri Richardson.

Richardson arrived in Gateshead on the back of a trio of early-season sub-10.80 clockings back home but the 21-year-old could do nothing to stop Asher-Smith. The winning time, 11.35, was irrelevant, with the rain hammering down and, more pertinently, the trackside wind gauge reading -3.1m/s.

The gap, 0.09, was more telling, with Richardson the runner up in 11.44, Ivorian world bronze medallist Marie-Josee Ta Lou third in 11.48 and Jamaica’s three-time world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce fourth in 11.51.

Goleador: Moffi ends season as second best African

    By Oluwamayomikun Orekoya

Terem Moffi has finished his first season in France as the second most prolific African player.

Moffi, who clocks 22 today, netted 14 league goals for FC Lorient, one goal shy of Algerian Andy Delort’s 15 goals for Montpellier. Moffi had the same number of goals with Lyon’s Toko Ekambi but played fewer than the Cameroon international.

Moffi helped Les Merlus to a 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers Strasbourg on Sunday to finish the season in 16th place with 42 points from 38 matches, thus securing another season in the french top flight.

France football radio station, RFI, called the former Kortrijk star was the real summer signing for Christophe Pélissier’s side whose goals were crucial to the team remaining in the Ligue after three years in the lower division.

“Coming from Kortrijk in Belgium, Terem Moffi was largely part of the plans of Christophe Pélissier, the coach.

“Terem Moffi offered his team a victory against PSG this season, a hat-trick against Bordeaux, and braces against Monaco and Marseille.

“Called up by his country for the first time, he could win his first cap on June 4 against Cameroon in a friendly in Austria.

“Terem Moffi started his European career in 2017 in Lithuania. After three seasons in Ligue 2, Lorient stay on in Ligue 1 thanks in particular to Moffi.”

Ramos unhappy after Euro 2020 omission

Sergio Ramos admits he is hurt by Luis Enrique’s decision to leave him out of Spain’s Euro 2020 squad after the head coach decided against using all 26 slots available to him.

Ramos is the most capped international player in European football history with 180 appearances, only four less than world record holder, Egypt’s Ahmed Hassan.

But Ramos’ place in Spain’s European Championship squad has been in doubt since the turn of the year as the defender has only made three appearances since January 14 due to a knee injury.

His appearance against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final was his only outing since mid-March and Enrique has decided against taking a risk with the iconic defender.

Ramos, who has won the World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, is not the only noticeable absentee though after Enrique opted to only pick 24 players.

The head coach took the unprecedented step of not naming a single Real Madrid player in his squad, meaning Spain are set to go into a major tournament without Los Blancos representation for the first time in their history.

Posting on his Instagram, Ramos said: “After a tough few months and a strange season unlike anything I have experienced in my career comes the Euro.

“I have fought and worked every day, in body and soul, to be able to reach 100% for Real Madrid and the national team but things don’t always work out the way we’d like.

“It pains me not to have been able to help my team more and not to play for Spain but, in this case, the best thing to do is rest, fully recover and come back next year like we’ve always done. It hurts not to represent your country, but I have to be honest and sincere.

“I wish all my teammates the very best of luck and I hope we have a great Euros. I’ll be another fan cheering on from home.

“A big shout to everyone and #VivaEspaña and #HalaMadrid always!”

Europa League: Chukwueze’s Villarreal hit Poland for Man Utd

    By Morakinyo Abodunrin

Nigeria international  striker Samuel Chukwueze  would be buoyed with the presence of his  mentor  Santi  Cazorla when the Yellow Submarines file out against  Manchester United  in the 2001 Europa Cup final in Gdansk, Poland.

The 22-year-old  who joined the  La Liga outfit  in the 2017/2018 season  following his stellar performance  at the  FIFA U-17 World Cup Chile 2015, has  huge respect for  his former teammate who is now plying his trade in Doha under Xavi for Al Sadd.

Asked recently, who the most talented player he’s seen during his time with Villarreal, Chukwueze  noted matter-of-factly: “It has to be Santi Cazorla, he is a fantastic player who can play so well with both feet. He is special and very, very talented.”

It would  therefore  be a delight for the Super Eagles star after the club’s  hierarchy  listed Cazorla along with   Bruno Soriano and Marcos Senna  in their travelling party to  watch the historic game against the English Premier league side.

“Bruno Soriano and Santi Cazorla will join Marcos Senna and will cheer on Villarreal CF in Gdansk (Poland). The Yellows legends will accompany the Submarine in their historic UEFA Europa League final against Manchester United (Wednesday, 9pm CEST),” the club noted on its official website yesterday.

Meanwhile,  Villarreal  left Spain last night for  Poland  in what will be their first UEFA Europa League final after being semi-finalists  in three previous occasions  in the 2003/04,2010/11 and  2015/16.

The Unai Emery’s side trained behind closed doors yesterday  at their training ground and are expected to leave Castellón Airport this morning to Gdansk.

In Poland,  coach Emery and two first-team players  will appear in the official pre-match press conference while the team would  have their  last training session tonight  at 7:45pm CEST at the Gdansk Stadium ahead of tomorrow’s final against Manchester United.

  • Transformation in the Foreign Affairs Ministry must go on

Transformation in the Foreign Affairs Ministry must go on

    By Samuel Haruna

Recently, I had the pleasure of writing the memoirs detailing the decades spent in active service by a retired distinguished senior officer in the Nigerian Foreign Service. It was a most informative and educating exercise, to say the least. The discourse that ensued is best narrated in his own words.

The purported letter dated May 4, 2021 addressed to Mr. President by some unknown persons has created an opportunity for the need of some anomalies ongoing in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be brought to the open. One of the most resisted things in organizations or most establishments, has always proven to be change. Change from the way of doing things and change that tend to bring about transformation and betterment of the establishment; resulting in the curbing of waste and injecting of new ideas into the system. The classical example of this analysis is what is currently playing out at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs especially as it relates to foreign service officers, a firsthand information of a retired staff.

The slogan “Soldier come, Soldier go, barrack remain” has shown to be apt and accurate, even so beyond the military circles. For many of us who know the inner workings of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and by extension, the Foreign Service operations, the expectations that things will improve in areas of service delivery to Nigerian citizens in the diaspora, continue to get dashed as things continue to be recycled in a business as usual manner.

Having served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Ambassador, now retired and in the position of a highly informed observer, he gets numerous calls from friends and former colleagues who are still in active service, every time on issues both those that affect Nigerians and the staff of the Ministry generally. The insanely high levels of corruption in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) over the years begs for urgent attention ranging from over inflated ticket costs and passages of officers, using official resources to ferry family and friends not covered by official travel, is a well-worn tale that needs not be rehashed. The resultant effect is that the crop of young officers who do get recruited periodically are speedily initiated into the cesspool, leaving not much hope for any systemic change, irrespective of the lofty ideas these younger ones may have held upon entering the service. It has become imperative that the time is now for that drastic change and holistic overhaul of the Ministry, in order to rid it of this deep-rooted systemic corruption.

The high level of indiscipline inevitably characterizes any such work environment, and directly for the work culture as well. Numerous cases readily come to mind over the course of years spent on active duty, where undisciplined officers at Nigerian foreign missions were never sanctioned, but instead they got cross-posted to other stations, in order to calm frayed nerves and cover up their criminal acts and misdemeanors.

Most times one would be forgiven if you find yourself wondering whether there is a Code of Conduct to guide actions by the officers. This is due to the way Public Service Rules and Extant Circulars get flouted at will. In the end, operations become subject to the fancies, whims and caprices of the most senior officer on ground, and his inner circle. Quite unforgettable is one such case where principal officers of the ministry were known to be collecting 5 Million Naira (5,000,000.00) per month for sundry issues without recourse to any financial guidelines bordering on such spending.

Most of these misgivings are done within the staff with no knowledge of the Hon. Minister whom one would imagine turns a blind eye to all these happenings. Equally deserving of note is the firebrand approach of the new Permanent Secretary, who is currently unearthing and suspending unjustifiable spending, thereby curbing wastages of the Ministry’s limited resources. However, I will quickly add that with the caliber of Foreign Service Officers we have, who are desperate and bent on using Aso Villa connections or “my Oga at the top” to clip his wings, and thwart the efforts of the permanent secretary as a result of all his well-intentioned reforms, so that they can continue in their nefarious ways unchecked.

Over the years, things have truly fallen apart, as can be seen in the breaking down of facilities in the MFA Headquarters such as elevators, generators, working materials, even when money was duly voted, disbursed and expended as clearly shown in the financial records and books of the Ministry. One inevitable effect of these decades of decay is that Foreign Service officers lack capacity for effective representation abroad. Nigerian owned mission houses are known to be abandoned in order to justify rent of alternative houses at very ridiculous and exorbitant costs. Your guess is as good as mine as to where the padded monies from such real estate deals are headed. Presently, we see situations where the current minister cannot stamp his authority to whip this hydra-headed monster into manageable shape. Staff of the MFA lament openly that he is being too much of a gentleman while dealing with hardened law-breakers who only see personal profits, not minding the far-reaching damage being done by the day. They feel he is too laid back for the good of the ministry; the time to act is NOW.

There have been some tough stances as it is echoed in the Ministry from the desk of the Permanent Secretary in dealing with matters under his purview, and the heat is building up thereby making these elements uncomfortable. The firebrand approach he brings to work is starting to give some hope for sanity. Most insiders who try to be neutral are quick to tell you that the caliber of Foreign Service Officers who populate the rank and file of diplomatic missions abroad will not hesitate to deploy ‘Federal might’ underhandedly through known Aso Villa ties, if push comes to shove. Recently, the usual grumblings are starting to well up from various camps of entrenched interests, that he is threatening their illegal sources of slush funds by his insistence on carrying out operations in the most professional way possible, devoid of sentiments as he is widely known to be a stickler to extant rules and regulations.

The sovereignty of every land upon which the foreign missions are located is called into question when one realizes that the citizenship services which Nigerians are routinely denied in these foreign mission offices, can be easily gotten from offices located near the same missions and are often run by Nigeria’s retired foreign service officers. These services have become so openly brazen that they now advertise online in US cities, obviously orchestrated in connivance with mission staff who get their regular cuts, or even own these business centers out rightly. This is the so-called ‘express service’. The presence of operations such as these, effectively usurps the sole responsibilities of Nigeria’s missions abroad. Suffice to say that they are now running parallel government services without due authorization from the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The ministry which has a penchant for fighting dirty especially against non-career Permanent Secretaries, in order to sustain their looting game, are already at it again. This was done to their last Permanent Secretary who lasted only 31 days in office at the ministry. Her only wrong doing was wanting to do things right. If Nigeria must see effective and competent foreign service representation and a return to the good old days of global significance, when Nigerian missions abroad were well respected, had the requisite clout and caliber of persons, then we must deliberately embrace a new paradigm shift towards respect for extant rules and regulations, training and re-training, entrenchment of discipline, amongst others within the Ministry and its foreign service operations.
As a keen follower of the happenings in the Ministry, I am very confident of some achievements of the current Permanent Secretary, Mr. Gabriel Aduda who is barely 4 months in the Ministry, and should be encouraged to sustain the reformation ongoing at the Ministry. When my attention was drawn to the publication of May 4, 2021, it was not the least bit surprising for me to understand that corruption is fighting back with the sponsored “non-note” written by unknown concerned Foreign Service Officers and purportedly forwarded to Mr. President. The Federal Civil Service under the leadership of Dr. Yemi Esan, must by all means rise to the occasion and identify this faceless group, towards applying the appropriate sanctions in line with Extant rules. The impunity in the Ministry must be addressed headlong in the interest of the country. The orchestrated blackmail against non-career Foreign Service Officers posted to serve as Permanent Secretary, must be effectively addressed. The Service is beyond an individual or group of people who are benefiting from the deeply entrenched corrupt system.

The era of sacrificing competence on the altar of selfish interests and resistance must come to an end. Waste in the Ministry must be investigated, the unfathomable spending must be investigated and culprits brought to book. The publication has indirectly unearthed their sordid gimmicks, however unknown to them, and the time to act is now. The anti-corruption agencies as a matter of urgency, should beam their searchlight into the affairs of the Ministry and the assertions contained in that publication should be completely ignored as the attempt is to distract the attention of the new management, who have made bold moves to change the state of affairs at the Ministry by challenging the usual norm for the sake of what is right and proper. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs must not die, and the much needed transformation has just begun. The Ministers and the Permanent Secretary should be allowed to do their work.

    Long live Nigeria’s Foreign Missions!
Long live the Ministry of Foreign Affairs!
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Chairmanship aspirant accuses party leaders of attacking, injuring supporters

    By Oyebola Owolabi

A chairmanship aspirant in Igando/Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Ahmed Oseni, has accused party leaders in the council of sponsoring attacks on his supporters.

Oseni, who is contesting on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), alleged his supporters were attacked on May 19 during a meeting.

The aspirant said he heard news of a planned attack at the meeting and was advised to boycott but he summoned courage and attended the meeting.

He said: “The emergency meeting was called. Prior to then, I heard information that there were plans to kill me because I was the only aspirant with grassroots support.

“Immediately I heard this, I went to my facebook wall to intimate and advise my supporters to be peaceful at the meeting.

“I wanted to avoid the meeting but I summoned the courage to attend because I felt if truly I want to serve the people, now is the time to show it.

“My supporters were peaceful at the meeting and when they realised my supporters were more, they invited hoodlums to chase us out.

“One of my supporters was shot in the leg while some were stabbed. One of them, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers Union (NURTW) and chairman of Egan branch was beaten and hit with a vehicle while trying to escape. He is presently receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Alimosho General Hospital in Igando.

“While I tried to leave, I heard shouts of ‘kill him, kill him, it is when he is alive that he can be chairman’.

“Residents of the community tried to stop them but I cautioned them not to take laws into their hands. They vandalised all our buses and beat all occupants.

“One of the thugs told me to find my way out but I didn’t leave until I was sure my supporters were all safe.”

Oseni said he has, through his lawyer, sent a petition to the APC state chairman and executives and believes the party would intervene.

When our correspondent called the Igando/Ikotun LCDA chairman, he said he could not comment as the case was before the police.

  • 33 days after abduction, parents of Greenfield varsity students beg for govt help

33 days after abduction, parents of Greenfield varsity students beg for govt help

    AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna

Thirty-three days after abduction of their children, parents and relatives of the remaining 16 kidnapped students and staff of Greenfield University, Kaduna have begged for government’s assistance to rescue them.

They said the kidnappers have insisted on N10 million ransom for each of the remaining captives comprising 13 students and three female staff of the university.

Bandits on 20th April, 2021 invaded Greenfield University at Kasarami village, Chikun local government, along Kaduna-Abuja express way and kidnapped 19 students and three female staff.

The kidnappers killed five of the students for failure of the government and their parents to pay the initial ransom demand of N800 million days after the abduction.

The bandits later reduced the cumulative ransom to N100 million and threatened to kill the remaining abductees if their parents fail to meet their demand the following day.

However, prominent Kaduna- based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, who later mediated between the bandits and the parents, told journalists the bandits agreed not to kill any of the captives again.

Speaking to The Nation on Sunday evening, one of the parents (name withheld), said they are traumatised because they don’t know the condition of their children.

He however appealed to State and Federal Government to urgently assist them in rescuing their children from captivity.

While lamenting their children had spent 33 days in the bandits den, the parent appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, to use their office to secure the release of the students before something sinister happens to them.

He reiterated the parents union’s initial call that the same strategy adopted to rescue the kidnapped students in Jangebe, Zamfara State, Kankara in Katsina State, Kagara in Niger State and Afaka in Kaduna State should be adopted by the Federal Government to rescue their children too.

According to him: “The kidnappers have not shifted ground, they are demanding N10 million for each of the 16 captives, even after the parents had collectively paid them over N60 million ransom for the release of their children without any success.

“We the parents are appealing to the Federal and State Governments to assist us to pay the ransom demanded or find any other way to ensure the safe return of our children.”
