    Awoniyi granted UK work permit

Liverpool’s Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been granted a work permit to play in the UK – six years after signing for the club.

The 23-year-old joined Liverpool on a long-term deal in August 2015 from Nigeria’s Imperial Academy, but has never played for The Reds due to his inability to secure a work permit. It means Awoniyi, who is currently on a seventh loan spell outside of the United Kingdom at German side Union Berlin is now eligible to be included in the Liverpool squad for next season.

“It’s been a long process but finally [Taiwo] Awoniyi can now focus on his career either at Liverpool or somewhere in England,” a top official at Imperial Academy told BBC Sport Africa. “He has the ambition to play in the Premier League and hopefully, he can do that next season.”

Fit-again Awoniyi, who has a contract with Liverpool until June 2023, scored five goals in 20 appearances for Union Berlin despite an injury-blighted campaign in the Bundesliga.

Since becoming a Red, the forward has enjoyed loan spells with then German second-tier club FSV Frankfurt, Dutch side NEC Nijmegen, Belgian outfits Royal Excel Mouscron (twice) KAA Gent and Mainz in order to attract interest from national selectors and gain a work permit.

Under-17 World Cup winner with Nigeria in 2013, Awoniyi has represented the West African country at all youth levels.

Fury-Joshua doubtful over Wilder rematch order

Tyson Fury’s heavyweight unification fight with Anthony Joshua could be put on hold after an independent arbitrator ruled that the WBC heavyweight champion must face former champion Deontay Wilder in a rematch.

Retired judge Daniel Weinstein upheld a claim lodged by Wilder that Fury must face him in a third fight by September 15 following their February 2020 title battle.

While the arbitrator’s ruling is not a formal court order, it would be deemed enforceable by courts if Wilder and Fury are unable to reach agreement.

Fury’s promoter Frank Warren told the BBC he hoped Wilder would, for a lucrative fee, agree to step aside and allow the bout to go ahead.

“Until we can reach an accommodation with Deontay Wilder’s people, I can’t say that (Fury’s fight with Joshua) will definitely happen,” said Warren. “But we are working hard to get that over the line.

“We were talking last night and hopefully we can do that. If not then Tyson, if he wishes, will go to the fight with Wilder. They’re the only two options.”

Anthony Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn was left fuming by the latest glitch, blaming Fury’s camp for being complacent over the arbitration hearing.

“We can’t wait around,” Hearn said on his company Matchroom’s social media channels. We had a deal in place with Tyson Fury and we were told the arbitration wouldn’t be an issue, that we could move on with this fight.”

He added:  “They were wrong and that’s on them, that’s their responsibility and their problem.”

“We hope they can solve that problem, but we have to look after ourselves and Anthony Joshua.

“We have to maintain the position of unified world champion, and those talks will continue and we want to be in a position by the end of this week to know, are we fighting Tyson Fury or are we moving forward with another option.”

2021 AFCON COUNTDOWN: Uchegbulam lauds CAF on Senghor, Pinnick appointments

Erstwhile first Vice President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Mazi Amanze Uchegbulam, said the continent’s flagship competition, Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) would enjoy a new lease of life with the appointments of President of the Senegalese Football Federation Augustin Emmanuel Senghor and his Nigerian counterpart Amaju Melvin Pinnick in the new management committee.

The continental soccer ruling body CAF announced on Monday ‘a new team that will lead the work of CAF in the standing committees’ with the approval of both Senghor and Pinnick as the two vice presidents to manage the Organising Committee of Total Africa Cup of Nations to be headed by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe.

“Frankly, I’m happy with the appointment of both Senghor and Pinnick in the new management team for the Organising Committee of the Total Africa Cup of Nations and I have no doubt that they will assist the CAF President in ensuring that the competition becomes bigger and better,” Uchegbulam, who served for many years as Vice President of CAF Board of Appeal, said in a statement.

Uchegbulam further said the forthcoming AFCON 2021 in Cameroon between January 9 and February 6, 2022, would be a big test for the continent since it would accommodate 24 teams for the first time, adding CAF has started on a positive note with the approval of the new management team for the continent’s most sought-after trophy.

“I’m not surprised at all with the appointment of Senghor into the AFCON Organising Committee as well as being named as the President for the Committee for Legal Affairs and National Associations because he is one of the most experienced members of the CAF Executive Committee,” Uchegbulam said.

Methodist Prelate: we’re better off as one

    By Oluwatomisin Amokeoja

Prelate of Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Dr. Kanu Uche has faulted agitations for secession, saying Nigeria is always better off as one.

He urged political leaders to find lasting solutions to the security challenge to prevent disintegration.

Uche, who spoke with reporters in Lagos, relayed the communiqué issued at the 38th Council of Bishops of the church in Calabar, Cross Rivers State penultimate week.

He cautioned agitators not to use religion and ethnicity to divide the nation, stating that no tribe should monopolise power.

The cleric noted that the agitations rocking the country were fallouts of perceived suspicion that a certain tribe has cornered all the important positions in the nation’s political structure.

“I must also point out that no tribe should monopolise power; every tribe must be involved in the governance structure of the country.

“As it is, a certain tribe considered as a minority is holding on to all the sensitive positions in the country. These are the causes of agitation. If the present administration gets the courage to do the right thing, I can assure you all the agitation will stop,” he stressed.

The cleric added: “President Muhammadu Buhari must show by acts and deeds that he is a detribalised leader and not having any hidden agenda. But I know Nigeria will not disintegrate and anybody trying to create problems for Nigerians will not succeed because God is with the people of this country.”

On some of the issues raised at the 38th Council of Bishops, Uche said the council urged the Federal Government to take bold and intentional steps towards restructuring the nation, including consideration of the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference.

He said the council expressed the needs for establishment of state police and firming up the present structure of community policing as part of efforts in tackling insecurity in the country.

“Council appeals to the Federal Government to ensure the independence of the judiciary, which is the last hope of the common man, knowing full well that adherence to the rule of law, assures investors, both locally and foreign of a stable environment for investment and profits,” he added.

The Prelate also said the Council of Bishops applauded the 17 Southern Governors for resolutions on the ways forward.

Emir of Kano, other passengers escape death as Abuja-bound Max Air develops engine fault

    By Fanen Ihyongo, Kano

A Kano-Abuja Max Air plane on Tuesday developed engine failure10 minutes after take off from the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), causing fear among passengers.

The Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero, was among the many passengers onboard the faulty plane.

The Max Air aircraft, marked VM1645, was scheduled to take off by 1.30 pm.

It however, took off at 2:00 pm, 30 minutes behind departure time, it was learnt.

10 minutes after take-off, the aircraft, filled with passengers to the brim, reportedly began to “swerve around the air” until it made a detour for an emergency landing.

The Nation gathered the incident was caused by an “engine failure.”

Max Air had not spoken on the incident yet as at press time.

A palace source, who was also onboard the plane, confirmed the incident to newsmen, saying “we smelt death.”

One of the passengers, Dr Samaila Suleiman, said it was “a near-death incident,” as he accused the airline of negligence.

“I heard a strange sound during the take-off but I waved it. I have been flying by aircraft many times but I have never heard such a sound during take-off.

“The sound was strange but I dismissed any strange feeling of insecurity.

“No radio announcement was even made until we saw ourselves back at the airport where we took off.

“It was a near-death experience. I and many other passengers were traumatised. Many of us canceled the trip and returned home,” Suleiman said.

However, Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero, and some of the other passengers were still flown to Abuja in the same Max Air plane after it was fixed.

EPL: Chelsea beat Leicester City to boost top four hopes

Just three days after Leicester beat Chelsea 1-0 in the FA Cup final, Chelsea got some measure of revenge to win thanks to Antonio Rudiger and Jorginho goals in front of 8,000 fans.

Kelechi Iheanacho gave the Foxes hope but they did not create enough chances to deserve anything out of the game.

Chelsea’s win takes them up to third place in the table, while Liverpool could knock Leicester down to fifth place if they win at Burnley on Wednesday.

There was no doubt Thomas Tuchel’s side deserved their victory as Rudiger bundled home from close range from a corner.

Jorginho put the game beyond doubt with a penalty after Wesley Fofana clipped Timo Werner.

They had been unlucky not to be ahead at the break as Werner had a penalty appeal controversially turned down and two goals disallowed.

Iheanacho’s goal after good pressure from Wilfred Ndidi was not enough for Leicester, who now need to score at least three goals against Tottenham Hotspur on the final day or hope for Liverpool to drop points.

There was a late melee with most of the players and the benches involved too – with Leicester’s Ricardo Pereira and unused substitute Daniel Amartey booked. BBC

NLC strike: ACF asks El-Rufai to reconsider workers sack

    By AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna

Mouthpiece of Northern Nigeria, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has reacted to the impasse between the labour movement and Kaduna government.

It called on Governor Nasir El-Rufai to reconsider his decision to downsize the workforce.

The ACF also called on the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to reconsider its stand as their displeasure and points against the Kaduna government have gone on record.

In a statement on Tuesday evening by its National Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Yawe, ACF said Nigeria was already faced with so many challenges that a strike action that has crippled the strategically located state like Kaduna for days running will only make things worse for the ordinary man.

The ACF said: “For two days now the activities of the Kaduna state government have been crippled by a strike called by the Nigerian Labour Congress. Hospitals, electricity/ water services, the airport, the road/rail transport and many other services in the state have been crippled.

“The National President of Nigerian Labour Congress NLC Ayuba Wabba said there is no going back on the strike untill the government follows the law in dealing with workers in the state. Labour is particularly angry with the state government over massive lay off of civil servants in the state.

“ACF advises the Kaduna state government to reconsider it’s decision particularly on downsizing the work force in the state services. We suggest that as a way out, maybe those earlier marked for lay off should be given some more time to make sure they acquire new and or additional skills.

“The Labour should also reconsider their stand. Their displeasure and point against the Kaduna state government have gone on record.

“Nigeria is already faced with so many problems that a strike action that has crippled the strategically located town of Kaduna for days running will only make things worse for the ordinary man.”
