    By Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

The Federal Government on Tuesday sued for peace in the ongoing industrial action by Organised Labour, which crippled economic activities in Kaduna state.

The government appealed to the parties to return to dialogue to end the industrial dispute.

Labour’s warning strike to protest the sack of workers by Governor Nasir el-Rufai entered its second day on Tuesday with no end in sight for the dispute.

Labour and Employment Minister, Chris Ngige, appealed to Governor el – Rufai, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Comrade Ayuba Wabba as well as President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Quadri Olaleye to immediately cease fire.

In a statement by the Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Charles Akpan, the Minister said the appeal became necessary following threat by electricity workers to withdraw service nationwide.

The statement reads: “We are not unaware of what is going on in Kaduna State. It is a labour issue, which has snowballed into a national strike and picketing by the two labour centres and affiliate unions.

“We hope and also pray the Kaduna state Governor not to escalate matters to such a level where it becomes uncontrollable. We also appeal the to the leaders of the labour centres to step down action to make way for discussion.

“My ministry is wading into the matter and therefore calls on the two warring parties to give peace a chance.”

The statement added: “Importantly, I appeal to workers in critical sectors not to tamper with electrical or water installations so as not to bring more sufferings to the people of Kaduna and the nation at large.

“This is because we have it on good authority, following a complaints by the Minster of Power that workers have threatened to trigger a nation-wide blackout by interfering or switching off the national grid.”

Their protest led to shutdown of business activities at the mill.

  • Hypertension: What you need to know about ‘silent killer’

Hypertension: What you need to know about ‘silent killer’

    By Alao Abiodun

Every May 17 is World Hypertension Day. It was first inaugurated in May 2005.

It is observed annually to raise awareness about the symptoms of hypertension.

The theme for this year is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer”, focusing on combating low awareness rates worldwide, especially in low to middle-income areas, and accurate blood pressure measurement methods.

Hypertension or high blood pressure occurs when the blood pressure increases to undesirable levels.

    Blood pressure measurement

    Blood pressure is measured with two numbers;

    · The first is the pressure in your blood vessels when your heart beats, called the systolic pressure. Systolic pressure is the higher of the two numbers.

    · The second measures the force of blood in your arteries while your heart is relaxed between beats. The bottom number is the lower of the two and is called the diastolic pressure.

Normal pressure is 120/80 or lower.

Your blood pressure is considered high (stage 1) if it reads 130/80. Stage 2 high blood pressure is 140/90 or higher.

If you get a blood pressure reading of 180/110 or higher more than once, seek medical treatment right away. A reading this high is considered a “hypertensive crisis.”

Readings between 120/80 and 129/89 are considered pre-hypertension.

People with pre-hypertension do not have blood pressure as low as it should be but are not yet considered to have high blood pressure.

Early detection of high blood pressure is very important.

Hypertension is often referred to as the “silent killer” because it may show no symptoms.

High blood pressure puts one at an increased risk for heart disease, heart failure, and stroke, among other things.

Long-term hypertension can cause atherosclerosis where the formation of plaque results in the narrowing of blood vessels. This can lead to heart failure, heart attacks, an aneurysm that is an abnormal bulge in the wall of an artery that can burst and may cause severe bleeding, kidney failure, stroke, etc.

Sometimes, people with essential hypertension may experience headaches, dizziness and blurred vision, but these symptoms are unlikely to occur until blood pressure reaches very high levels.

Some people report that their heartbeat seems louder than usual and feels as if it is inside the ear; this may be more prominent the higher the blood pressure is.

    Risk factors for hypertension

    · Modifiable risk factors include unhealthy diets (excessive salt consumption, a diet high in saturated fat and trans fats, low intake of fruits and vegetables), physical inactivity, consumption of tobacco and alcohol, and being overweight or obese.

    · Non-modifiable risk factors include a family history of hypertension; age over 65 years, and co-existing diseases such as diabetes or kidney disease.

    Essential hypertension treatment

    · Hypertension can be managed through a combination of lifestyle changes and medication.

    · Doctors may recommend a range of lifestyle adjustments that will commonly include:

    · Adopting a healthy, nutritious diet, ideally vegetarian or vegan in nature

    · Exercising

    · Stress relief techniques

    · Reducing alcohol and tobacco use

    · Consuming less salt, cheese, bread and processed foods

  • Delta 2023: ‘Okowa can’t decide next governor’

Delta 2023: ‘Okowa can’t decide next governor’

The Delta State electorate and not Governor Ifeanyi Okowa will decide who takes over the reign of governance on May 29, 2023, the Director of Communications, Tony Amechi Foundation (TAF), Sharon Isaalah has said.

She spoke in reaction to a statement credited to the Ika-born medical doctor-turned politician over the weekend in Asaba, the state capital, saying he would not hand over power to anyone who doesn’t believe in equity and fair play. She stated that the governor was playing God rather than being grateful for his political journey so far.

The Foundation noted that the 2023 gubernatorial election in Delta State will mark the end of the criminalities of Okowa’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stressing that the people will ensure the umbrella party is not only voted out but the disastrous administration will be swept off using the broom of the APC.

Miss Isaalah said the governor was mistaking the state and her citizens for 2019 when they deceived and hoodwinked the people into voting the PDP, noting that Okowa’s misrule is embarrassing enough. She noted that his administration is the worst in the state since its creation.

“Never has Deltans witnessed the kind of tribalism in government as being witnessed under Governor Okowa where numerous infrastructures are sited in Owa-Alero his village at the detriment of other tribes in the heterogeneous state.”

Isaalah noted that an ethnic irredentist and jingoist can never decide who rules the oil-rich state, noting that democratic power and not political gerrymandering resides in the people and that, at the right time the governor will feel the heat of dividing Delta State along clannish lines. She alleged that Governor Okowa does not see the state beyond Owa-Alero, his community where most of his political appointees hail from.

Isaalah stated that Okowa rode on the crest of ethnic blackmail to power to which he never showed appreciation in terms of service delivery.

The oil-rich state, she averred, is better without Okowa as she calls on the governor to bury his plan to transmute to Senator in 2023. She added that the people of Ndokwa nation will take their pound of flesh at the right time:

“You cannot, after impoverishing a people, playing and tossing them like football, turn around to ask them for votes,” she said.

She further noted that “Okowa has insulted the people of Ndoka nation and Delta State in general enough; he has deceived us enough and he cannot determine who the governor becomes because the state is not his exclusive preserve,” she said.

The people, she added, are aware of the fact that no malevolent would be allowed a say in the destiny of the state any longer let alone decide who becomes what, when and how – on behalf of a sinking dynasty.

She said: “We are watching developments as they unfold in the state, particularly the swinging of the political pendulum as we drive the process of freeing the state from the hands of a selfish bunch who doesn’t believe in the betterment of the people. How do you, in 2021, talk about 2023, are you God?”

  • Thailand reports new daily 10,000 infections

Thailand reports new daily 10,000 infections

Thailand has hit a new daily record with the discovery of nearly 10,000 new Coronavirus cases yesterday.

This is coming after massive infections were found in the prison system, official data showed.

The country reported 9,635 new cases, including 6,853 infected in the prison system, according to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

The sharp increase in new infections was a result of massive active cases found in prisons across the country.

During the first two weeks of May, health authorities checked over 24,000 inmates in eight prison facilities, of which 10,748 were found to be infected.

Meanwhile, 2,200 were waiting for test results, Natapanu Nopakun, an official at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said at a briefing.

Excluding the prison clusters, the tally of yesterday’s new infections reached 2,782, with the capital Bangkok registering the largest count of 1,843 new cases.

The new infections brought the country’s total number of infections to 111,082 with more than 70 per cent of the infections having been confirmed since the beginning of April.

This was confirmed by the health authorities when the third wave began and quickly spread across the country.

The death toll climbed to 614, with 25 new fatalities reported yesterday, according to the report.

A large number of new infections came when the country decided to relax some restrictions on dine-in services at restaurants from yesterday.

Restaurants in the capital Bangkok and three other provinces can provide dine-in services with the limited serving capacity and operating hours.

Previously, they could only open for food delivery.

As of yesterday, 43,268 patients were under treatment in hospitals, with 1,226 in critical conditions, Natapanu said.
