Ekiti Labour rejects suspension of minimum wage adjustment, subvention

    By Rasaq Ibrahim, Ado-Ekiti

The Organised Labour in Ekiti has rejected decision of the government to discontinue consequential adjustment of the minimum wage for senior workers in the state.

The workers also expressed displeasure at the proposal to reduce subventions to higher institutions, which they said will further worsen the state of the institution as well as the welfare of the workers.

The Government and stakeholders in the state had agreed to suspend the payment of consequential adjustment and subvention to institutions as part of measures of bailing the state out of the current economic challenges.

But Organised Labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress and Joint Negotiating Council, in a statement on Monday rejected the decision, describing it as unacceptable and inhumane.

The statement was jointly signed by NLC Chairman, Kolapo Olatunde; his secretary Mrs Akinyemi Taiwo; TUC chairman, Com. Sola Adigun; his Secretary, Com. Kuloogun Lawrence and JNC Chairman Kayode Fatomiluyi and his secretary, Com. Gbenga Olowoyo.

The statement reads: ” The Organised Labour comprising NLC TUC and JNC expressed the position of the entire workforce to Mr Governor that Workers of Ekiti State rejected any withdrawal of minimum wage and consequential adjustment payment of the State which is a product of a process that has been signed into law.

“In the same vein, the Organized Labour rejected any stoppage of subventions to all the subvented institutions in Ekiti State.

“Also, the State Organized Labour, viewed any attempt under any guise to further impoverish the living standard of workers and all vulnerable groups in Ekiti State as inhuman and unacceptable.

“To this end, the State Organised Labour further advocated for the inclusion of GL 13- GL 17 in the implementation of the consequential adjustment payment among other arrears of workers welfare.”

The labour unions assured the workforce, “that there is no way we will comprise on the welfare of workers in the state, hence, workers should rest assured of our commitment at all time to their yearnings and aspirations,” it added.

Buhari’s achievements remain unmatched – APC

    By Jide Orintunsin, Abuja

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) came hard on Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors on Monday, claiming the achievement records of President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration are visible and unmatched.

The party described the PDP Governors’ consultative meeting in Ibadan as nothing but a political jamboree and a waste of time with no substance.

Reacting to the communique by the opposition Governors, Secretary of the APC Caretaker Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, in a statement said the PDP Governors failed to use the opportunity of the meeting to contribute meaningfully to the development of the country.

Assessing the outcome of the PDP Governors meeting, Akpanudoedehe berated them accusing the Governors of engaging “in misplaced name calling and abuses instead of seizing a golden opportunity provided by the meeting to offer meaningful and patriotic contributions on the review of the state of the Nation.”

Describing the outcome of the meeting as “unfortunate”, the APC scribe maintained “It is disappointing that the supposed PDP Governor’s consultative meeting turned out to be a political jamboree and its outcomes a waste of time, with no substance.

“The ruling party prides itself of the achievements of the President Muhammadu Buhari led administration, insisting that his record is visible and unmatched.

“Efforts and records of the President Muhammadu Buhari government on revamping the economy, devolution of powers, upgrading the country’s security architecture, governance and electoral reforms, addressing perennial farmers/herders clashes, public sector reforms is visible and unmatched.

“Nigerians will recall that President Buhari on 20th May 2020 signed an executive order on implementation of financial autonomy of state legislature and state Judiciary which the same PDP governors have rejected.”

Akpanudoedehe assured that the party and government will continue to identify and partner with patriotic, well-meaning individuals and interests to make the country better and address its challenges.

Kaduna to NLC: your actions won’t change our resolve

    By AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna

Kaduna Government has reacted to shut down of activities in the state by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Monday, describing the actions as illegal and unlawful trespass on government facilities.

It however said labour’s desperate actions would only reinforce government’s resolve and commitment to using all the resources it can generate to serve the interests of the majority of its citizens.

The government, in a statement by Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Mr Muyiwa Adekeye, noted the conditions that compelled its decision to right-size its work force have not been altered by the NLC’s campaign of economic and social sabotage.

The statement stated: “Government’s resolve is only reinforced by the desperate actions undertaken by the NLC to unlawful trespass on government facilities, and prevent officers from signing attendance registers.”

It added: “Despite these actions, the state government has guaranteed access to the State Secretariat and other government offices.’’

“The government intends to continue running its operations in service to the people, despite the futile efforts of the NLC to impede it. Accordingly, all officers from GL 14 upwards are expected at their duty posts as usual.”

The government noted NLC has also shut healthcare access for several citizens, in addition to shutting down electricity, including several hospitals and chased away the patients.

‘’General hospitals in Kawo, Tudun-Wada, Kafanchan, Giwa, Rigasa, Kakuri and Sabon Tasha were illegally locked.

“They also shut rural hospitals and primary health centre in Kwoi, Turunku and other locations across the state,’’ it lamented.

‘’The government shares the pain of the people of Kaduna State amidst the avalanche of unlawful conduct by the NLC and appeals to all residents to remain peaceful and vigilant,’’ Adekeye said.

The statement however warned‘’ government is documenting all these violations of the Miscellaneous Offences Act and the Trade Union Act.’’

The Special Adviser said government welcomed ‘’the visit by the leaders of the Trade Union Congress who met with our Head of Service, Bariatu Y. Mohammed, this morning.

‘’Hajiya Bariatu has reported on the constructive attitude of the TUC delegation led by Barrister Musa Lawal, its Secretary-General.”

BREAKING: EFCC quizzes ex- Kwara Gov Ahmed over alleged diversion of N9bn

By Yusuf Alli, Managing Editor, Northern Operation

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has quizzed the immediate past Kwara Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, over alleged diversion of N9billion.

According to sources at the anti-graft agency, the former Governor is currently being grilled by a crack team of operatives at the headquarters of the EFCC in Jabi Abuja.

Ahmed was said to have arrived the EFCC headquarters around 10am on Monday to honour an invitation by the agency.

One of the sources said: “And for the past seven hours, he has been in the interrogation room, writing statements.

“Though details of the case are still sketchy as of press time, I think it is connected to how funds to the tune of about N9billion were diverted from the coffers of Kwara State Government during his tenure as Governor of Kwara state between 2011 and 2019.

“He is also expected to account for his time as Commissioner for Finance in the administration of Bukola Saraki, a former President of the Senate.”

EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed the former Governor responded to the commission’s invitation.

Uwujaren however didn’t offer further details when asked.

  • Israel kills 42 in Gaza as Netanyahu warns war will go on

Israel kills 42 in Gaza as Netanyahu warns war will go on

    Agency Reporter

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City flattened three buildings and killed no fewer than 42 people yesterday, Palestinian medics said.

Despite the heavy death toll and international efforts to broker a cease-fire, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the fourth war with Gaza’s Hamas rulers would rage on.

Netanyahu, in a televised address yesterday, said the attacks were continuing at “full-force” and will “take time.”

Israel “wants to levy a heavy price” from the Hamas militant group, he said. He was flanked by his defence minister and political rival Benny Gantz in a show of unity.

Since violence flared last Monday, at least 188 Palestinians, including 55 children, have been killed in the Gaza Strip. More than 1,200 others have been wounded. In the occupied West Bank, Israeli forces have killed at least 13 Palestinians.

Israel has reported 10 dead, including two children, from the thousands of missiles fired from Gaza by Hamas and other Palestinian groups, many of which were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome air defence system.

The Israeli air assault early yesterday was the deadliest single attack, marking the worst fighting since their devastating 2014 war in Gaza.

The airstrikes hit a major downtown street of residential buildings and storefronts over the course of five minutes after midnight, destroying two adjacent buildings and one about 50 yards (meters) down the road.

At one point, a rescuer shouted, “Can you hear me?” into a hole in the rubble. “Are you OK?” Minutes later, first responders pulled a survivor out and carried him off on an orange stretcher. The Gaza Health Ministry said 16 women and 10 children were among those killed, with more than 50 people wounded, and rescue efforts are still underway.

Earlier, the Israeli military said it destroyed the home of Gaza’s top Hamas leader, Yahiyeh Sinwar, in a separate strike in the southern town of Khan Younis. It was the third such attack in the last two days on the homes of senior Hamas leaders, who have gone underground.

Israel appeared to have stepped up strikes in recent days to inflict as much damage as possible on Hamas as international mediators work to end the fighting and stave off an Israeli ground invasion in Gaza.

But targeting the group’s leaders could hinder those efforts. A United States (U.S.) diplomat has been deployed in the region to de-escalate tensions. The United Nations (UN) Security Council was also meeting yesterday.

In its airstrikes, Israel has leveled a number of Gaza City’s tallest office and residential buildings, alleging they contain Hamas military infrastructure. Among them was the building housing The Associated Press office and those of other media outlets.

The latest violence broke out in east Jerusalem last month, when Palestinian clashed with police in response to Israeli police tactics during Ramadan and the threatened eviction of dozens of Palestinian families by Jewish settlers.

A focal point of clashes was the Al-Aqsa Mosque, a frequent flashpoint that is located on a hilltop compound that is revered by both Muslims and Jews.

Hamas fired rockets toward Jerusalem last Monday, triggering the Israeli assault on impoverished Gaza, which is home to more than two million Palestinians and has been under an Israeli and Egyptian blockade since Hamas seized power from rival Palestinian forces in 2007.

Speaking alongside Netanyahu yesterday, Israel’s military chief, Lt. Gen. Aviv Kohavi, said Hamas did not anticipate Israel’s overwhelming response to its rocket fire. “Hamas made a serious and grave mistake and didn’t read us properly.”

The turmoil has spilled over, fueling protests in the occupied West Bank and stoking violence within Israel between its Jewish and Arab citizens, with clashes and vigilante attacks on people and property.

Yesterday, a driver rammed into an Israeli checkpoint in the east Jerusalem neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah — where the Palestinian families had been threatened with eviction — injuring six officers before police shot and killed the attacker, Israeli police said.

The violence also sparked pro-Palestinian protests in cities across Europe and the United States, with French police firing tear gas and water cannons at demonstrators in Paris.

However, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire, saying in his address to the council that hostilities between the two parties were “utterly appalling” and urging them to “allow mediation efforts to intensify and succeed”.

The UN Security Council (UNSC) had privately met twice last week over the worsening violence, but has so far been unable to agree on a public statement because the US – a strong ally of Israel – did not believe it would be helpful, diplomats said.

China voiced regret that the U.S. has blocked a UNSC statement on Israeli-Palestinian violence as it urged greater international efforts to stop the bloodshed.

“We call upon the U.S. to shoulder its responsibilities, take a just position, and together with most of the international community support the Security Council in easing the situation,” said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who chaired Yesterday’s meeting as China is council president for May.

Umahi orders probe of ex-aide’s abduction

    By Ogochukwu Anioke, Abakaliki

Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi yesterday ordered investigation into the attack and kidnap of his former aide, Amos Ogbonnaya.

The victim, who was a coordinator of Anuagata Development Centre in Ohaozara Local Government, was kidnapped and tortured last Thursday by suspected political thugs. He was freed the next day.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urged the Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali to probe the abduction.

It said it did not trust the Commissioner of Police to be impartial.

Ebonyi PDP spokesman Silas Onu said in a statement: “We are calling on the IGP, even as our leaders take necessary steps in that direction, to personally open an investigation into this high crime. Immunity does not last forever.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been accusing each other of masterminding the kidnap and torture.

Umahi, who condemned the kidnap, ordered investigation into the incident.

He said this in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze.

The statement said: “Having followed the trend of events, including accusations and counter-accusations in some quarters, The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Nweze Umahi, condemns the unsavoury situation in strong terms, knowing that such is unhealthy for collective democratic existence.

“The governor has directed the police and other security agencies to swing into action by unearthing all perpetrators of the dastardly act, to enable them face justice. He wishes Mr. Ogbonna a quick recovery.”
