Reconstruction begins at Enugu Catholic Cathedral vandalised by Mbaka supporters

    By Damian Duruiheoma, Enugu

Reconstruction of some parts of Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, Enugu State, partially vandalised by followers of fiery priest and founder of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, penultimate week, has begun.

The Parish Priest of Holy Ghost Cathedral Parish, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Raphael Ozonwafor, made this known yesterday during the mass at the cathedral.

Mbaka’s followers, believing him to be missing, had vandalised the cathedral and episcopal residence in Enugu penultimate week.

They had stormed the home of Bishop Callistus Onaga of Enugu Diocese, demanding to know the priest’s whereabouts on May 5 and in the process, they destroyed property and desecrated the altar of the city’s cathedral.

Following the shocking incident, Bishop Onaga declared one week of prayer in atonement and reparation, leading to Fr. Mbaka apologising last Sunday to his bishop and to the church after his reappearance.

Speaking after his homily to raise funds for the reconstruction of the cathedral gates on Sunday, Fr. Ozonwafor said reconstruction had taken place at the parish house with over N1.4million spent so far to replace some of the property destroyed.

He added that the most urgent work needed was the replacement of the destroyed gates.

The cleric said: “We’ve spent over N1.4million to replace some of the things destroyed at the father’s house. We’re replacing the cathedral gate. It was not good and we need about N1.5million to replace the gates.

“With the sample we’ve got now, the new gates will last and will be difficult to destroy or pull down. If we had had a strong gate, the incident wouldn’t have occurred. This is because it is when the gates are open for you that you will enter the cathedral.”

In his homily titled: ‘That we may be one’, Fr. Ozonwafor said the incident that happened last time in the cathedral showed that “we’re still divided in the church.

“Even among the bishops, cardinals, there may be such division. That’s why Jesus Christ prayed in the scripture that we as his body might be one.

“In the Church today, we look at people, where they come from: Anambra, Enugu, Mbaise and all that.

“We promote this division by over ambition, jealousy, lack of love and unhealthy competition. That was why Judas Iscariot sold Jesus Christ. This is why we still have Osu caste system in Igboland

“Most of these things start from the home front. Is your family united? Is your family in a position where it is supposed to be?

“When we love one other as prescribed by Christ, we will no longer categorise people and that will mark the beginning of a united church. When we are united, we will conquer any attack from outside.”

Wike, Amaechi clash over Rivers insecurity

    By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike and Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi at the weekend traded words over the latter’s attribution of insecurity in Rivers to high level of unemployment.

Amaechi, who spoke on Sunday while receiving defectors to the All Progressives Congress (APC), said Wike destroyed all the programmes and projects of job creation he instituted in the state as Governor.

The immediate past commissioners for Urban Development and Rural Planning, Dr. Reason Onya, and Agriculture, Charles Nwaorgu and their supporters left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC.

The Minister said as Governor, his administration established many agricultural programmes that created job opportunities for the youths.

He said: “Rivers State is in danger, completely. A state where properties are collected and somebody is busy building everywhere and nobody is talking.

“When I was Governor, God knows, I did my best. I did not build only roads, I built schools. I did not build only roads, I built electricity. I built farms. I created employment. Rivers State was not among the highest unemployed community in Nigeria.

“I felt that you employed me. I was not your master; I was your servant. I was not a contractor. I paid contractors so that they can pay their workers and the money will circulate.

“The reason why crime is high in Rivers State is because of unemployment. That the reason why we had the Songhai Farm. Today, the Songhai Farm is gone. That is why we had the Banana Farm that they stopped in Khana.

“That is why we had fish farms and that is why we were building a farm in Etche. We were doing all those things to create employment for the youths. That is why we hired 13,200 teachers and that is why we sent our children overseas to study.”

But Wike, in a swift reaction, said it was disingenuous for Amaechi, to attribute insecurity in the state to unemployment.

He said: “Is unemployment fuelling insecurity in Kaduna, Plateau , Borno, Yobe, Ondo, Ebony, Imo, Niger States governed by the All Progressives Congress (APC)?”

The Governor, in a statement by his Special Assistant, Media, Kelvin Ebiri, said if the Minister, who is the immediate past Governor, had any modicum of sincerity, he would attest to the fact that security is the sole responsibility of the federal government.

He said: “Is he (Amaechi) trying to indict his boss, President Muhammad Buhari, who is the Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and who is constitutionally saddle with the responsibility to provide security for Nigerians.

“It is a well known fact that Amaechi is the one who appoints every Commissioner of Police that has been posted to Rivers State since 2015. So, if there is any security failure, he is to blame.”

Wike described the minister’s utterance on the current imposition of curfew in the state, following the recent attacks on police formations, as rather unfortunate.

He said: “Perhaps, the minister is happy that members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are killing innocent policemen , who were protecting lives and property. Is Amaechi happy that the weapons of these slain security personnel were carted away by the hoodlums? Amaechi, from all indication has lost focus and is now frustrated.”

The Governor declared that his administration had offered scholarship to over 500 Rivers students to study medicine and other related courses at the PAMO University.

Reacting to allegation by the Minister that he was acquiring property in the state, the Governor said it was better to acquire property in Nigeria than to do so in Ghana.

Wike said Amaechi jubilation over the defection of his former Commissioner of Urban and Rural Planning, who was indicted by a Judicial Commission of inquiry, was a pointer that he is politically irrelevant in Rivers.

The Governor further urged the Minister to return to Abuja and resolve the financial malfeasance rocking federal agencies under his watch, and desist from destroying the homes of others.

    Insecurity: FCTA demolishes Taxi Park

    By Gbenga Omokhunu, Abuja

In a bid to eliminate criminal activities in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), at the weekend, demolished a taxi park reportedly turned into a drug addict’s colony and a haven for many other criminal activities.

FCTA said the place, located at NICON Junction in Maitama District, was supposed to be an interchange by the Abuja Master Plan, but temporarily made a taxi park, to mitigate the hardship of commuters.

Director, FCTA Security Services Department, Adamu Gwari, said the taxi park had not only turned into an environmental nuisance but also a security threat that cannot be allowed.

Gwari, who led other officials on the demolition exercise, also noted that in view of the persistent insecurity across the country, the administration is prepared to deal with all potential dangers to the residents.

His words: “In line with the city programme, this place is a taxi rank. But it has been highly abused and turned into nuisances. That is why we have to remove everything. This place has become a security threat and it breeds criminality. There are series of concerns from the residents regarding the rate of criminality which emanates from this place.”

Chairman,  FCT Ministerial Committee on City Sanitation,  Ikharo Attah said the FCT Minister  Malam Muhammad Bello was worried that the government’s efforts towards alleviating residents’ transportation difficulties were scuttled by miscreants.

Attah explained that the ministerial directive to immediately demolish the taxi park was meant to promptly address brewing insecurity within the highbrow Maitama District, saying the park was abused.

According to him, a place provided by the government to ease residents’ movement, unfortunately, had turned into a hiding place for drug addicts.

He vowed that the contravention won’t be allowed to remain an environmental nuisance that breeds insecurity within the neighbourhood and the territory in general.

Attah said: “This place is supposed to be an interchange according to the plans, but temporarily turned to a taxi park to manage transportation problems, but the place was abused. The place was turned into a home for drug addicts and has become dangerous for the neighbourhood.

“The Minister was clear when he gave a matching order that this nuisance is removed. The taxi park has become a contravention that can’t be allowed.

“All the concerned departments will ensure that the nuisance does not reappear because this place is the heart of Maitama District. The Minister has ordered that we should green the place, to add to the aesthetic of the city.”

Nasarawa killings: Tiv leaders appeal for protection

    By Linus Oota, Lafia

President, Tiv Development Association (TIDA) Nasarawa State, Comrade Peter Ahemba has alleged that there is a grand plot by the Fulani herdsmen, in collaboration with some tribes in the state, to annihilate the indigenous Tiv farmers in Nasarawa State.

He appealed to Governor Abdullahi Sule not to allow the planned extermination of the Tiv ancestral homes by the Fulani militia happen during his reign as Governor of Nasarawa State.

The Fulani militia had, during the weekend, murdered a Catechist, Mr Sydney Shirsha of Amudu Village in Giza Chiefdom in Keana Local Government Area of the state alongside two other people.

The Fulani militia, armed with sophisticated weapons, invaded the Tse Amudu, a Tiv village in Giza Development Area of the state, killing the Catechist and two others in the midnight attack.

It was gathered that the attack left several others with various degrees of gunshot injuries, just as the incident has led to the displacement of over 20,000 more Tiv farmers from various villages within and outside the local government area.

Confirming the development to our correspondent, Comrade Peter Ahemba said Governor Sule is a father to all the Tiv people in Nasarawa State.

“He means well for us, he is doing his best to secure us, he is passionate about our safety and our security and I believe he will not allow the Fulani herdsmen to take over our ancestral homes.”

He regretted that the Tiv people have remained under sustained attacks by armed herders for no reason.

“The killing and displacement of the Tiv people of the state in the coordinated attacks have continued unabated since the first attack on the Ajimaka Community of Doma Local Government Area that led to the gruesome murder of nine people about a month ago.

“We call on Governor Sule to save our soul. We are being chased out of Nasarawa State and we appeal to the governor not to allow the seemingly planned elimination of the Tiv community to succeed under his watch.

“We acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of the state government towards restoring peace and security in the affected areas and we, as law-abiding citizens shall continue to count on the government for the protection of our lives and property.”

“It is unfortunate that while the government is making frantic efforts to restore peace, the attackers and their collaborators are bent on ensuring that the Tiv community is completely wiped out of the state,” he said.

The Nasarawa Tiv leader also appealed to the state government to beef up security around the Internally Displaced Persons Camps, alleging that there are threats of more attacks on Tiv villages and IDP camps in the affected areas.

While appreciating traditional rulers in the affected local government areas for accommodating many of the displaced Tiv people in their personal homes and public facilities, the TIDA President equally acknowledged their untiring efforts towards complementing government’s efforts for peace and security.
