Institute to banks: accept intellectual assets as collateral

The Intellectual Property Institute has called on the organised financial sector in Nigeria to recognise and accept intellectual property as collateral for granting loans to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

This was the main thrust of a symposium marking this year’s edition of the World Intellectual Property Day with the theme: ‘IP and SMEs: Taking Your Ideas to Market.’

The virtual event was attended by stakeholders in the creative industry, intellectual property professionals, entrepreneurs and other stakeholders.

The event was supported by Trumann Rockwood Solicitors, Borrow To Own Concepts Limited, (Abuja’s No. 1 pay-small-small retail company, Caya Productions (an award-winning boutique audio post-production & recording studio in Wuse 2, Abuja) and ProEdge Events.

The Institute identified lack of awareness and regulatory bottlenecks among factors impeding the acceptance and marketability of intellectual assets in Nigeria.

The institute said owners of intellectual properties in the creative and other industries are major contributors to the growth of Nigeria’s economic.

It also warned that “Nigerian businesses would continue to lose out on opportunities for technology transfer and collaborations if the regulatory bottlenecks impeding the marketability and commercialisation of intellectual assets and new technology are not addressed.”

The speakers at the event include former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Abuja and an IP Lawyer, Mr. Folarin Aluko, Founder and Head, Engineer at Caya Productions, Melissa Ibrahim and the Lead Talent Manager at Hyers Elite Athletes & Talents (HEAT) Limited, Mr. Basorun Aderoju.

  • Pensioners in daggers drawn over unremitted N70bn check-off dues

Pensioners in daggers drawn over unremitted N70bn check-off dues

    By Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

Pensioners under the aegis of the Federal Civil Service Pensioners (FCSP) – a breakaway faction of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) have trade words over check-off dues accrued from the payment of pension arrears.

While the FCSP in a letter sent to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, asking him to stop the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) from paying the check-up dues to its rival union, the NUP said members of FCSP had no locus standi any longer to speak for federal civil service.

PTAD recently released N70 million to the pensioners which is one per cent of the N70 billion check-off dues accruing from the payment of pension arrears.

Already, FCSP has concluded plans to set up a committee to carry out the registration of the union as an independent body.

National Chairman of FCSP, Omeiza Sunday said that the protracted impasse between his group and the NUP was occasioned by the blatant refusal of the National Headquarters of the NUP to give the union commensurate allocation of the 55 per cent share of the one per cent Check-off Dues accruable to the Federal Civil Service Pensioners Branch (FCSPB).

Sunday explained that the Police Pension Department under PTAD, Customs, Immigration and Prisons Department, Parastatals Pension Department, and all the 36 councils of the union which are affiliates under the NUP umbrella collect their check-off dues directly from the source of payment.

“But the case is not the same with the Federal Civil Service Pensioners. This exceptional act of deprivation of the rights and privileges of the Branch calls for curious concern.”

But the NUP, through its spokesperson, Bunmi Ogunkolade, described members of FCSP as “disgruntled few elements” who are seeking attention because they lost out during the power-play before the dissolution of past executive members.

  • Labour, FG square off over planned salary cut

Labour, FG square off over planned salary cut

    By Ibrahim Apekhade Yusuf

The organised labour and the federal government may be on a collision course over the fresh salary cut being proposed by the latter across all sectors, The Nation has learnt.

It may be recalled that the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, had hinted that the Federal Government was working to reduce the high cost of governance by cutting down on the salaries of workers.

The Minister was reported to have said this in Abuja at a policy dialogue on corruption and cost of governance in Nigeria organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. The Minister of Finance was also reported to have directed the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) to immediately review the salaries of civil servants as well as the number of federal agencies in the country.

Reacting to the minister, in a statement by the President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, he described as scandalous moves by the government to cut down salaries, saying it smacked of insensitivity and lack of empathy for the masses.

In the statement which reads in part, the NLC boss said, “It is most unthinkable that government would be contemplating to unilaterally slash the salaries of Nigerian workers at this time. The question to ask is “which salary is government planning to slash?” It certainly cannot be the meagre national minimum wage of N30000 which right now cannot even buy a bag of rice! The proposed slash in salaries is certainly not targeted at the minimum wage and consequential adjustment in salaries that some callous state governors are still dragging their feet to pay.”

Pressed further, Wabba said, “It is public knowledge that the multiple devaluation of the Naira in a very short time and the prevailing high inflation rate in Nigeria has knocked out the salaries earned by Nigerian workers across board. Nigerian workers are only surviving by hair’s breadth. Indeed, Nigerian workers are miracles strutting on two legs. It is, therefore, extremely horrendous for a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to pronounce salary slash for Nigerian workers at this time.”

The NLC boss further reiterated that, “This call for salary slash by Mrs. Zainab Ahmed is tantamount to a “mass suicide” wish for Nigerian workers. It is most uncharitable, most insensitive, most dehumanizing and most barbaric. Nigerian workers demand an immediate retraction and apology by the Minister of Finance.”

He therefore impressed on President Muhammadu Buhari the need to call the Minister of Finance to order. “If there is any salary that needs serious slashing it is the humungous remuneration and allowances pocketed by political office holders in Nigeria who do very little but collect so much.”

While making a case for the workers, Wabba said, “Workers generate surplus value and revenue for government. We do not constitute any unnecessary cost or burden to governance! It is also important to make the point that salaries are products of contracts governed by laws. They cannot be unilaterally adjusted.”

Many countries of the world, he stressed, “Are increasing the salaries of their workforce, extending social security coverage for their citizens and providing all forms of palliatives to help their people through the terrible socioeconomic dislocations occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic, it would be completely absurd for the Nigerian government to be thinking of salary slash. This move is not only at great odds with global best responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is also in violation of relevant ILO Conventions and Declarations on Wages and Decent Work.”

EPL: I’m highly delighted, impressed by our performance – Tuchel

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel, has said he was highly delighted with the 2-1 victory over Manchester City, adding that they almost lost the Premier League match in the first half on Saturday.

“What a performance in the second half. It was more or less equal in the first half but we almost gave the game away in the last five minutes. If they scored the penalty, maybe the game would have been over before it really started.

“If it went to 2-0, maybe we wouldn’t have had a chance to come back. It was very hard, we were 1-0 down and had an injured player, I’m absolutely impressed by the performance and reaction in the second half and we deserved to win the second half.

“If you want to steal all three points at the Etihad in this situation, of course you need a bit of luck, momentum, and decisions from the referee. But we had many chances in the second half, so a big, big congratulations to the players.”

S/West Speakers insist on state police, financial autonomy

    By Yinka Adeniran, Ibadan

The Conference of Speakers of Southwest legislatures on Saturday called for state policing and regional security summit to proffer practical ways out of current insecurity in the zone.

They also asked South West Governors to jointly procure at least three security helicopters and drones for aerial surveillance of the region.

These were parts of the resolutions reached by Speakers and Majority Leaders of Houses of Assembly in the region during a meeting at Golden Tulip Hotel, Jericho, Ibadan.

Chairman Conference of Speakers of Southwest States Legislatures, Bamidele Oleyelogun, who is also Ondo Speaker, chaired the meeting.

Oleyelogun called on the Federal Government to take concrete positions by conveying a national security summit.

Speakers Olakunle Oluomo (Ogun) and Funminiyi Afuye (Ekiti) called on Southwest Governors to be more assertive and take bold stances to protect the Southwest states, especially by empowering forest guard.

Speaking on behalf of the Forum of the Majority Leaders in the region, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, said the laws of Amotekun should be strengthened to further comprises surveillance and give royal fathers a role to play in the issue of security.

A communiqué presented at the end of the meeting by the Conference chairman reads in part: “The forum noted further and advocated as follow: that the Governors of the Southwest States should come together to procure drones and at least three helicopters for the aerial surveillance of the entire region.

    “To adequately empower the forest rangers in the States to embark on aggressive patrol of the forest areas. This step will no doubt change the security architecture of the South West States;

    “The laws establishing the Western Nigeria Security Network (Amotekun Corps) as passed by the Houses of Assembly should be strengthened to give room for the recruitment of able-bodied unemployed youths, as this will help in surveillance, information and intelligence gathering;

    “Noted that there should be Southwest security summit to be organised by the Executive and the Legislature where resolutions will be passed;

“Noted that though, the present Nigeria Police are doing their best in securing the nation but the Conference insists on the establishment of State Police to complement the efforts of the Security Agencies.”

‘We treated 15 Lekki tollgate shooting victims’

    By Robert Egbe

The Medical Director of Grandville Trauma Centre, Aranmolate Ayobami, said his facility treated 15 victims of the Lekki Tollgate shootings of last October 20 in Lagos.

Ayobami told the Lagos State Judicial panel probing police brutality and the Lekki tollgate incident that the patients were transferred from three hospitals in Lekki with gunshot wounds.

He said the 15 patients comprised four referrals from Vedic life Healthcare, seven referrals from Reddington hospital and two from Doreen hospital.

No fewer than 14 petitioners have accused the army of shooting several protesters dead and injuring several.

The army, which entered a defence denying the allegation, failed to honour subsequent summons requiring it respond to further questions by petitioners.

Ayobami, a surgeon, appeared before the panel based on a summons issued to Grandville Trauma Centre to give account of their encounter with protesters from the Lekki incident.

Led in evidence by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Mr Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, he claimed members of the public, not the Federal or Lagos government, foot the patients’ medical bills.

According to him, staff of the hospital also donated blood for one of the victims who needed blood.

Following a request by panel chair Retired Justice Doris Okuwobi, he named the patients as follows: Ikwrogbo Theophilus, 38 (gunshot injury to the lower limb, had an x-fix; metal objects attached to the broken bones); Adamu Hassan Yinusa, 27 (gunshot injury to the elbow bone and had x-fix as well; and Nicholas Okpe, 43 (gunshot injury to the chest, a chest tube was passed into the lungs to allow for air and blood and was transferred to LASUTH for further care).

Others are Ogbonna Emmanuel, 20 (gunshot injury to the thigh and had a broken femur); Olalekan Faleye, 23 (gunshot injury to the leg; taken in for vascular ligation to save his life; took five pints of blood and referred to Igbobi where he had amputation of the limb); Joshua James, 32 (gunshot injury to the left thigh, had multiple dressings); and Patric Okolo, 22 (gunshot injury to the right forearm).

Director, Hospital Administration and Human Resources of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Gbajumo Kehinde, also appeared before the panel.

Kehinde, who appeared following a summons, tendered some documents to the panel but is yet to testify.

Proceedings were adjourned till May 15.

BREAKING: Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-1 in dramatic comeback

Sergio Aguero made a mess of a Panenka penalty as Chelsea ensured Manchester City must wait a little longer to wrap up the Premier League title by fighting back to earn a dramatic win at Etihad Stadium.

City, needing three points to become champions of England for the seventh time, took the lead just before half-time through Raheem Sterling’s close-range strike.

Aguero had a glorious chance to make it 2-0 from the spot moments later when Billy Gilmour fouled Gabriel Jesus but the Argentina striker opted for a dinked effort that was easily saved by Edouard Mendy.

It proved a costly miss, as Chelsea improved after the break and equalised when Cesar Azpilicueta set up Hakim Ziyech to fire home from the edge of the area.

The visitors had two more efforts ruled out for offside before Marcus Alonso won it for them in injury time, meeting Timo Werner’s pull-back and sending the ball looping over Ederson.

This was Chelsea’s second win over City in the space of three weeks, following their victory in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley in April.

The two sides will meet again in the Champions League final in Istanbul at the end of this month. BBC

This result can only give Chelsea extra confidence for that game, as well as providing a big boost to their hopes of a top-four finish, but in truth this encounter offered few clues to how their next meeting will be decided.

City boss Pep Guardiola made nine changes to the side that beat Paris St-Germain here on Tuesday, while his Chelsea counterpart Thomas Tuchel made five – and the result was a disjointed performance from both sides.
