  • Three segments of Ramadan

    Three segments of Ramadan

    By Femi Abbas

At the beginning of this sacred month, 11 days ago, an analysis was done in this column classifying the 30 days of Ramadan into three segments. The first segment was said to contain the first ten days during which the blessings of Allah come to the faithful Muslims freely and in abundance. Except for meeting that segment with faith and good intention, there is no working for the blessings therein. That segment ended yesterday paving way for the second segment that begins today.

As from today, Sunday, May 25, 2021, fasting Muslims, all over the world, will start working for the master key to their final abode (Al-Jannah) through forgiveness. That is the essence of this second segment of the month of Ramadan. During this period, Muslims are expected to intensify worship (Ibadah) by spending their days and nights repenting on their misdeeds and iniquities while seeking Allah’s forgiveness through the chanting of Istighfar. But such forgiveness is neither automatic nor free.

Usually, there are conditions attached to it. One of such conditions is that one must admit his misdeeds and repent on them. The second is that he should voluntarily and genuinely seek forgiveness. And the third condition is for him to resolve never to return to such misdeeds again. To seek Allah’s forgiveness during that time, a Muslim should follow the guidance of Allah as exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (SAW) who reportedly said that “if you want to speak with Allah, make your request on prostration. And, if you want Allah to speak to you recite the Qur’an”. No one who abides by the above conditions and follows the Prophet’s counsel will ever be disappointed. Allah is both promising and fulfilling. He never reneges on His promise. In Qur’an 2:186 He promises thus: “…when my servants ask you (Prophet Muhammad) about me, tell them that I am very close to them. I answer the prayers of all who seek my favour if they pray to me (without any intermediary). So, let them expect my favourable response and trust in me so that they may be rightly guided”

The second ten days segment of Ramadan is not just to consolidate on the blessings of the first ten days. It is also to prepare the fasting Muslims for the last ten days when they are expected to be fully liberated from the evil manacles of satanic forces. For genuinely dedicated Muslims, in this sacred month, the prayer for that liberation in any language and in a condition of purity is a sine qua non.

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

Minister of  the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, has praised the management of Jaiz Charity and Development Foundation for its humanitarian gesture.

Bello spoke during the 4th and 5th Zakat Distribution Closing ceremony at the National Mosque Auditorium, Abuja.

He commended the foundation’s support to the less privileges members through the Zakat.

“Your dedication to the provision of support to education, economic empowerment, health and other humanitarian services to the poor and needy across the country is indeed laudable. The FCTA will continue to support organisations that are committed to alleviating the hardship of residents and the development of the FCT,” he said.

The minister urged wealthy Nigerians to assist the needy.

This, he said, will remedy many societal ills confronting the nation.

The foundation’s Board of Trustees Chairman, Mallam Adamu Bello, said the sum of N43.5 million Zakat proceeds was disbursed to 499 beneficiaries in Lagos, Nasarawa and Adamawa states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

“While it is no news that millions of Nigerians are living below the poverty line, members of the Jaiz Foundation are concerned about the plights of the poor and vulnerable people and of particular interest are the people in the conflict affected regions of the country who are suffering from deprivation and lack of access to quality social services. Be that as it may, myself and my colleagues on the Board of the foundation are determined to continue to bring succour, relief and hope to the voiceless poor families who are unable to meet their basic necessities of life through the instrumentality of Zakat,” Mallam Bello said.

Chairman of Jaiz Bank Plc, Alhaji Umaru Abdul Mutallab, urged the beneficiaries to make good use of their Zakat funds or items.

This, he said, would enable them to be self-sustained.

He hailed the management of the foundation for a wonderful job.

Chief Executive Officer of the foundation, Dr Abdullahi Shuaib, said N75 million was disbursed in 2019.

Adding 2020 to it, Shuaib said N118.9 million has been distributed to 2,755 beneficiaries.

According to him, the philosophy of Zakat was to promote social justice, equity and income redistribution.

The foundation, he noted, has institutionalised an Educational Waqf (Endowment) in Katsina State to the tune of N51 million as part of its contribution to provide access to quality education for the children.

The beneficiaries described the gesture as befitting Ramadan gifts.

    Nduka CHIEJINA; Assistant Editor

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has offered to show universities how to make money from agriculture.

But before that can happen, the apex bank has charged universities and graduating students to come up with breakthrough solutions that would improve agricultural productivity.

CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, made this charge in Makurdi, Benue State, when he delivered the convocation lecture of the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi.

Emefiele said the apex bank has pumped in a lot of money into agriculture as a result, the CBN he said “would like to see how the university community and indeed the graduating students can leverage their knowledge and research to come up with similar breakthrough solutions that would improve productivity of our agricultural sector”

The CBN, he said, will “provide a commercial outlook to research breakthroughs on improved seeds by ensuring a guaranteed market through off-take of those seeds for adoption by our farmers under the Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP)”.

Emefiele noted that “the seed industry is a multi-billion dollars investment, which offers a low hanging fruit in a potential collaborative effort between the CBN and the university community”

  • C’River DG calls for legislation to back labour migration

C’River DG calls for legislation to back labour migration

    Our Reporter

The Director General of Cross River Migration Control Agency, Prince Michael Nku Abuo, has called for legislation to back labour migration that would boost national development.

Abuo made the call in his address at the maiden Cross River State Migration Summit held in Calabar, the state capital.

The DG who also represented the Governor of Cross River State, Prof Ben Ayade, pointed out that several solutions by both federal and state governments have been given to address the issue of unemployment in order to curb the problem, adding that the way forward to tackle the menace is via labour migration.

According to him, “Cross River Migration Control is exploring and advancing for opportunities for citizens of the State who are at home and in Diaspora under a work study programme that will give access to student loans and jobs, and at the end come back to the State to inject their expertise in developing various sectors of the state economy as part of developing human resources.

He also added that as unemployment continue to soar high based on the report received from the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, as of March 15, 2021 stood at 33.3 per cent, which is 23, 233, 333 million Nigerians are unemployed including 15.9 million underemployed Nigerians, that puts the nation under serious time-bomb, and this will trigger more migration and brain-drain.

He said: “It is true that there are challenges and concerns of human trafficking, modern day slavery and abuse or human resource drain etc but these challenges and concern can be addressed with adequate legislation, feedback and follow up mechanisms, sanctions and sensitization and awareness creation.

“It is this passion to raise awareness that led to the Governor even before creating this agency to make migration the theme of an episode of our Africa’s Biggest Street Party.

“Rather than having people explore deadly avenues/means and offer themselves to be trafficked we can and should legislate, facilitate legitimate alternatives which can and should be monitored.

“It is in this regard that we are setting up modalities to facilitate towards regular labour migration within and outside the state via our skilled migrant program.

“With this initiative in partnership with reputable organizations we will create a job centre and facilitate admissions for first degree holders in the area of Science (Social and Pure Science), technology, engineering and Mathematics to study for their Master’s in the EU, Canada and United States under a work study program that will give the access to student loans and jobs.

“In addition we will also facilitate our indigenes to gain more skills and link up those with skills to where it is needed globally not just in the gulf nation.”

However, he noted that, “This thought and action as ambitious and daring as it sounds is doable and not a single person from our state under this scheme will be keyed into any initiative where they will be exploited and that goes against global best practices or and breaches our constitution.

“This move and is implication is beyond just Cross River State but this template if implemented and replicated is one that will boost our nation’s foreign reserves in billions of dollars as proven by remissions in tens of billions made by our brothers and sisters in the Diaspora and create millions of jobs as well.”

Meanwhile, explaining the vision and mission behind the creation of the Cross River State Migration Control Agency, which is first of its kind in Nigeria and also the first sub-regional agency set up to address the issue of migration not only in Nigeria but Africa, he said was the brain child of the Ayade-led administration.

“The agency was therefore primarily created to coordinate, provide and explore opportunities within and outside the state/country to regulate the move of our people in quest of economical survival, address concerns of IDPs, street kids, refugees, work out anti trafficking measures and irregular migrant concerns within the state.

“So far within a year and few months our agency have made progress by ensuring we create access to opportunities for almost 10,000 persons, yes 10, 000 under different schemes/initiatives, we have documented evidence for this, this would not have been possible without my 34 adhoc staffs and team members working in my office.

“These 10,000 and more are geared at providing economic opportunities for our people and this is the hallmark of the Sen Prof Ben Ayade led administration, in addition to the above he has appointed over 5, 000 persons comprising of Cross Riverians and non indigenes and have created agro-processing industrial layouts across the state such as a cocoa, pharmaceutical, rice, groundnut, chicken and noodles factories and of course a garment factory employing over 2, 000 persons. Mostly youths are the beneficiaries of this scheme”, he stated.

Also speaking was the Minister of State for Labour and Productivity, Mr Festus Keyamo, who traveling abroad for greener pasture is a personal decision and a right of citizens as far is for genuine course, and such cannot be stopped.

But he also pointed out that there are persons who are also migrating to Nigeria for greener pastures and are well documented including Lebanese, Chinese and others for legitimate businesses.

“You cannot stop people from wanting to go abroad because there are people who genuinely want to travel.

“As Nigerians are going abroad for greener pastures, people are also coming here for greener pastures like many documented workers who are Lebanese, Chinese, and others.

“We must, however, improve on our provision of decent jobs and stop slavery in the name of work in Nigeria, so as to reduce the excessive desperation to go abroad even as an illegal immigrant,” he said.

Also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Sen. Adamu Bulkachuwa, Chairman, called for control of 21st century migration, and said Nigerians traveling abroad should be good ambassadors of the country in the host country.

“Any Nigerian leaving this country must be prepared to obey the laws of the land he or she is traveling to, because there is nothing the federal government can do other than appeal if they break the law and are arrested.

“If the Nigerian mission doesn’t help Nigerians in the Diaspora, it is not because they don’t want to, but because they see that the Nigerian truly broke the laws of the land, all they can do is get a good lawyer to defend the Nigerian or beg”, he said.

He further explained that the smart home has a high level of technology infused in it, adding that the security process has been infused to a lot of technology, particularly from the gate which has a key card and a remote.

“This mini estate has a high level of technology infused in it, the security process has been infused to a lot of technology, particularly from the gate, there is a key card and a remote to the gate. With this, there is no security personnel at the gate.

Essien who identified funding as one of the greatest challenges in housing delivery, stressed the need for government’s partnership with private developers to tackle housing challenges in Nigeria.

“Our major challenge is financing, acquisition. Developers don’t have money to buy land because it is expensive, they also don’t have money to build and even when they do, people don’t have money to buy, so the financing has been very tough, we have enough land in the country and there are so many professionals on ground.

“If we can get this land at very minimal cost, and if it comes to us directly, housing issues will be addressed.

Also speaking, Big Homes Sales Representative, Bertha Kingsley, assured that that the firm will continue to provide quality and enduring houses to its clients.

“Apart from this project, we have different project locations in Mabushi and Asokoro”, she added.
