Anambra 2021: Odds favour Valentine Ozigbo

    By Ikenna Agu

Come November 6th, 2021 Anambrarians will troop out en mass to, democratically, elect a successor to the incumbent Governor, His Excellency Willie Obiano. This transition is expected to mark the beginning of a new era after what many has considered as an abysmal performance by the incumbent especially in his second term.

Anambra state is known for her trail blazing performance in elections in South Eastern part of the country in particular and Nigeria in general. It’s on record that elections in the state are devoid of violence and thuggery, rather over the years, the state became famous for her issues based campaign and free, fair and credible elections. It is also on record that contestants upon declaration of a winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), would queue to congratulate the winner. They rarely go to tribunals to contest election results. A feat that is rare in Nigeria.

As expected, political analysts in their ingenious manner have embarked on the permutations that will produce the possible winner of the election. It’s needless to say that the ruling party in the state in presently non-existing due to poor performance of Governor Willie Obiano. The reason is not far-fetched; the people of Anambra state are used to good governance; so anything or anybody that will go below the already set standard will be shown the exit door at the right time.

The ruling party at the federal level, All Progressives Congress (APC) has no serious foothold in the South East and South South part of the country. The unpardonable exclusion of people from the zone in appointments and citing of project by the federal government is clearly strangulating the remaining life out of the party in the state. APC, no doubt, has been seen as anti-Igbo party. Any candidate from the party already knows his fate before the contest,

The mass exodus of party members from the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) into the rejuvenated Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is a clear indication of where the pendulum is swinging to. The dwindling fortunes of APGA in the state started in 2019 General Elections when PDP won two out of the three Senatorial seats and also recorded a huge success in Federal House of Representatives’ positions.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before now had been giving APGA a good push in the state but with the exit of former governor, Peter Obi to PDP, marked the accelerated decline in the fortune of All Progressives Grand Alliance. With this, it is clear that November 6th Gubernatorial election in Anambra State is PDP’s great opportunity to reclaim the state.

With the state clearly open for the largest party in Africa to claim, the battle now goes down to the candidates. The two front runners in the fight to wrestle the party’s ticket are Hon. Chris Emeka Azubogu and Mr. Valentine Chineto Ozigbo.

Chris Azubogu is a seasoned federal legislator whose strides in the House of Representatives speak for itself. He has the sympathy of his people especially within the federal constituency he’s representing. His critics say that it takes more than being a legislator to rule a sophisticated state like Anambra state. His political resume lacks business and corporate experience which has made past leaders of the state to stand out among their peers. Chris will also have a big issue on religion because Anambra politics has been a running battle between Roman Catholic and Anglican faithful. Unfortunately, he’s from the Anglican stock which, most times, has always been taking second position.

Though he has been described as a man of integrity, but the current political leadership in Nigeria has shown that it takes more than integrity to dispense leadership. The political pundits and historians in Anambra state described him as a man who stands a good chance of winning the election if he is contesting alone. This, in the words of Plato, “says it all”.

Meanwhile, standing on the pole position for the race to not just winning the ticket of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but also win the election proper is diminutive Valentine Chineto Ozigbo.

Contrary to the obstacles his closest rival is facing in the race, all odds are clearly in his favour. He has seen it all. He has an intimidating pedigree in terms of leadership, business and corporate world. He is a grassroot politician and employer of labour. His philanthropic gestures has earned him award and honours both locally and internationally. He has been described by political pundits as a man whose presence dotted every political and economic space in Anambra state. The level of acceptance he has garnered so far is unprecedented in the political history of the state. Even his detractors find it difficult convincing prospective voters against him.

Valentine Ozigbo was born on July 20th, 1970, in the rural village of Umuomaku, Orumba South LGA, Anambra State where his father was stationed as a school headmaster. He had his primary education in village schools and his secondary in his hometown at Christ The Redeemer College Amesi, Aguata LGA. He left Anambra only when he gained admission to the prestigious University of Nigeria, Nsukka at 19. Even with all his global fame, he has always stayed connected with his roots and Igbo culture.

He was the best graduating student of his set in Accounting from University of Nigeria Nsukka and joined Diamond Bank in 1995. He won the prestigious Chevening Scholarships, UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to study for a Masters in Finance at Lancaster University and graduated with Distinction. He also holds a Masters in Business Administration from the same university.

A fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, the Institute of Credit Administration, and the Institute of Tourism Professionals. He is also a member of the Institute of Directors (IOD) Nigeria and a member of the Board of Jesuit Memorial College, Port Harcourt. He participated in the pioneer Global CEO Programme for Africa undertaken by three Universities: Lagos Business School, SBS Business School Kenya, and IESE Business School New York, and was elected the pioneer president of the class. He has also participated in several prominent international conferences such as the World Economic Forum at Davos (WEF); the World Economic Forum on Africa (WEFA) in Nigeria; the African Development Bank annual meetings in China; the World Bank/ International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meetings in Washington DC; Euromoney and Economist Conferences in London; Euromoney debates on Capital Flows to Africa in London; and SIBOS 2009.

An accomplished business leader and entrepreneur with over twenty-six years of experience in corporate transformation, power, hospitality, energy, and banking (commercial, retail, investment and international banking). He served as the President and Group Chief Executive of a globally celebrated business, Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc (Transcorp).

Transcorp Plc is one of Africa’s largest conglomerates which include Transcorp Power, one of the largest power generation companies in Nigeria with 972MW installed capacity; Transcorp Hotels, the owners of Transcorp Hilton Abuja and Transcorp Hotels Calabar; and Transcorp OPL281, an oil and gas company. He stepped down as President of Transcorp Plc in March 2020 and retains a seat on the Boards of Transcorp Plc, Transcorp Hotels Plc, and Transcorp Power Limited.

In the corporate world, he is called a global champion of Kaizen, a Japanese philosophy for management that ensures continuous improvement. Kaizen means “deleting waste” in Japanese. It is used in international businesses to improve corporate performance which enhances profitability. There is no doubt that he will delete every form of waste being perpetuated by the current leadership in the state.

Coming from a humble and Christian background, he has been described as an ardent member of the Roman Catholic. His father, Chief Andrew Ozigbo, a retired school headmaster, was a Catechist who, together with his mother, Ezinne Christiana Ozigbo, a trader and farmer, raised Valentine in line with Christian faith. He is a man who lives by the principles of Jesus Christ, which is to love your neighbour as yourself and be at peace with all. He chaired Unusual Praise 2018, the largest Catholic gospel concert in Africa. He has been married to Ojiugo for 18 years, and they have four children

IPOB members, 14 others held over killing of policemen in Southeast

By Gbenga Omokhunu, Abuja, and Chris Njoku, Owerri

Police have arrested 16 suspects over the killing of security operatives in the Southeast.

Some of the suspects were labelled members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Their arrest was through a joint effort with the Army and Airforce.

Force spokesman Frank Mba listed the suspects as Ugochukwu Samuel aka Biggy, 28, from Abia State, and Raphael Idang, 31, from Odukpani in Cross River State.

Others are Cletus Nwachukwu Egole aka ‘Alewa’, 60, from Imo State; Michael Uba, 33, from Imo State and 12 others.

Police said they were implicated in multiple felonies committed across several states in the Southeast.

According to Mba, the suspects were arrested in various parts of the country following intelligence-driven sting operations.

The statement reads: “Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested 16 suspects for complicity in a series of violent and unprovoked attacks on security operatives and facilities in some states of the Federation, particularly in the Southeastern part of Nigeria.

“The arrest is an outcome of painstaking, deliberate and tireless efforts by operatives of the Nigeria Police working in collaboration with their counterparts from the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Airforce.

“It is aimed at bringing to justice persons responsible for the emerging trend of attacks on security personnel and wanton destruction of security facilities and operational assets.”

Mba said investigations linked the suspects to the attacks and killing of security personnel, as well as stealing, unlawful possession of firearms, arson and malicious damage to operational assets of military and law enforcement agents.

He said: “Specifically, investigations revealed that the duo of Ugochukwu Samuel aka Biggy and Raphael Idang were among the criminal elements that attacked policemen on duty at a checkpoint on 24th December 2020 along Orlu-Ihiala Road in Imo State where two police officers were killed and a police Hilux patrol van set ablaze.

“Both were part of a larger group that attacked a police reconnaissance team on 13th January 2021 killing one police officer.

“Ugochukwu Samuel a.k.a Biggy, who sustained a bullet wound during an attack by his gang on a military convoy in which some soldiers were killed and weapons carted away, was subsequently arrested while receiving treatment in a hospital.

“Both suspects confessed to being active members of IPOB and ESN (Eastern Security Network).

“Cletus Nwachukwu Egole aka Alewa, a pastor with the Holy Blessed Trinity Sabbath Church, Orlu, Imo State and Michael Uba, a prophet with the Association of Jewish Faith, who were also arrested, are two of the masterminds of the various attacks on security personnel, in addition to providing spiritual cover for the gang.

“Cletus Nwachukwu Egole aka Alewa’s house was used by the gang members to plan their nefarious operations.

“He also donated his late brother’s farmland for use as a hideout and training camp for the gang.”

No fewer than nine AK47 rifles, five other sophisticated firearms, 17 AK47 magazines, 549 AK47 live ammunition, 10 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), camouflage bulletproof vests, walkie-talkies and other incriminating items were recovered from the suspects.

Mba said all the suspects will be charged to court.

IPOB debunked police claims that some of the 16 suspects were their members, saying that none of its members were involved in the killings.

Speaking to The Nation yesterday, Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful said that  IPOB did not form the Eastern Security Network (ESN) to attack Nigerian security forces but to defend their people against herders attack.

“We formed ESN to protect our people from the menace of the herdsmen who kill our people including our women who are constantly being raped. We have never attacked police because we operate in the forest.

He described the police force as the worst security agency ever established by Nigerian government.

“The police are a bunch of liars and unserious people. They are just arresting innocent people and tagging them IPOB/ESN members. We have never killed or attacked any police officer.”

Fury’s dad casts doubt on Joshua fight

Tyson Fury’s father John has cast doubt over whether his son’s fight with Anthony Joshua will go ahead.

Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn had claimed the pair signed a two-fight deal, but Fury Snr insists it means nothing until a date or venue has been arranged.

He added that the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic means it is not the right time to stage such a showpiece bout.

Fury Snr said on BT Sport: “What have they signed? They’ve signed nothing in my eyes. They’ve got no date, no venue, no nothing.

“What does it mean if you can’t get a date and a venue? What does it mean if no one is willing to put the money?”

Fed Govt dispels possibility of fake COVID-19 vaccines

The Federal Government has dispelled the possibility of any fake COVID-19 vaccines being administered or sold by unauthorised institution in the country.

Director, Department of Hospital Service, Federal Ministry of Health Dr. Adebimpe Adebiyi, stated this in a circular he signed on behalf of the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire in Abuja.

The circular followed a letter from the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 regarding the arrest of about 3,000 doses of fake COVID-19 vaccines destined for Africa from China.

The minister, who acknowledged receipt of the PTF letter, however, stated: “I am, therefore, to bring this to your notice and dispel any possibility of COVID-19 vaccines being available for sale or being administered by any unauthorised institution.

“To prevent the importation of fake vaccines, kindly note that the Nigeria Customs Service has designated the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, as the only Point of Entry (PoE) for imported COVID-19 vaccines.”

He then called the attention of chief medical directors and medical directors of federal tertiary health institutions to the fake COVID-19 vaccines destined for Africa, noting that it had been arrested in China.

Meanwhile, competent sources in the ministry confirmed the information to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

One of the sources said: “The ministry issued a circular to inform the medical directors of federal hospitals about the fake vaccines.

“It is just to let them (medical directors) know that fake COVID-19 vaccines are on the way to Africa but is not in Nigeria.

“Nigeria is not even taking vaccines from China. So, there is no way fake vaccines can get into the country because it is only the Federal Government that is authorised to import COVID-19 vaccines for now.”

  • On COVID-19 vaccine distribution conundrum

    On COVID-19 vaccine distribution conundrum

    By Afolabi Cassandra Adeola

SIR: The arrival of the Covid-19 vaccine in Nigeria could not have come at a better time to curb the spread of the virus in the country. With a coherent plan for distribution and administration, the country will be one step away from stopping the spread of the virus and returning to a semblance of normality. An effective plan will harness the strength of existing vaccine delivery infrastructure, innovative strategies and robust engagement of federal and state health care facilities to ensure efficient, effective and equitable access.

States with high numbers of affected persons within the country should be given top priority. Currently, Lagos State has the most affected persons in Nigeria and should therefore be allocated more doses as opposed to states with fewer reported cases.

The vaccination programme requires extensive data monitoring infrastructure, including appropriate IT system, to identify when a person needs a second dose, to monitor outcomes and adverse events, and to account for products.  Data will need to be available both on the federal and state level to ensure efficient management of the vaccination programme.

Also identifying the proper messages to promote vaccine confidence and countering misinformation will be necessary to achieve high coverage. Understanding that public confidence in vaccines is necessary for vaccine uptake and acceptance especially in the rural areas. Communication with community leaders to spread the advantages of the vaccine intake will increase public trust in vaccines and immunization coverage.

The programme, an all-encompassing and long term one requires precise coordination across federal, state and local government level and also partnership with private sector.

There are some factors that might inhibit the efficient distribution of the vaccine nationwide. One, the registration of the rural population of the country for collection of the vaccine. The restricted access to internet service or technological know-how to register for the vaccination themselves might pose a problem. Hence, setting up immunization hubs in rural areas will be a way to remedy this problem. This is important so as not to create a lacuna in the vaccine coverage.

Transportation of vaccines to rural areas might pose a challenge due to the storage requirement of the vaccine. There is need for adequate provision of cold chain storage equipment and a streamlined supply chain to minimize waste of an already limited product.

It is important that the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA imbibes the nature of transparency and avail the general public with information on the status of the immunization program and the vaccine protocol.

Nonetheless, the vaccination program is likely to last for a period of time before substantial coverage is attained depending on the availability of vaccines. So it is important to still maintain all Covid-19 precautions especially in places of worships, market places and schools so as to mitigate the spread of the virus.
