Ibadan, Fifth Chukker brace for 2023 polo festivals

With the 2023 General Elections out of the way, the national polo season is bracing to resume its road tour as preparations get underway for two box office international polo extravaganzas in Oyo State and Kaduna State respectively.

On resumption, Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State will take the first slot as polo clubs across the country are perfecting strategies ahead of the annual Ibadan Polo Festival.

President of Ibadan Polo Club, Koyinsola Owoeye confirmed, stating that the polo fiesta revered for its exciting atmosphere and relaxed setting, would gallop off in May after the Ramadan.

Owoeye also disclosed that arrangements are in top gear to ensure that the event remains an epoch that will linger for long in the memories of all participants as well as invited guests and enthusiasts of the king of games.

“All the organizing committees are on ground and working around the cloak to deliver on all fronts the required values to our esteemed traditional sponsors, partners, patrons, participating teams and thousands of enthusiasts who have over the decades made the Ibadan tournament a festival of choice,” Owoeye assured.

According to the Ibadan polo buff, over twenty teams coming from Kano, Kaduna, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Jos, and Lagos are expected to participate in the annual festival as the best players and patrons in the country set their sights on Ibadan in May.

Owoeye who led Ibadan quest for two of the biggest prizes at the recently concluded Lagos international tourney, said other major prizes at stake would include the Ibadan Cup presented in the early 1930s by Colonel R. Petit of the 9th Lancer of the then British colonial masters.

Others are the Rotimi Cup, Ade Alakija Cup played in memory of the former Ibadan Polo Captain, and The GOC Cup as well as a handful selected prizes and awards.

“The Ibadan polo tournament has over the years set a unique example as one of the most exciting polo events in the country and we are putting together a package that would make the tournament the most exciting in years,” he added.

From the foremost Eleyele rolling fields in the ancient Oyo Kingdom, the national polo tour will move up north with the cosmopolitan city of Kaduna playing host to the 2023 edition of Africa’s premium Fund raising polo tournament.

Elsewhere, the Access Bank-UNICEF Charity polo tournament that is reputed as the biggest charity polo event in Africa will gallops-off at the magnificent lawns of Fifth Chukker Polo & Country Resort in Kaduna in June..

Organisers said in a release that the UNICEF event will be decided in two stages, with teams battling for the Usman Dantata Cup and the events’ second most wanted prize, The Access Bank Cup in the first stage, while the Charity Shield takes center stage in the concluding stages.

Inaugurated in 2003, the Access Bank UNICEF Charity Shield polo which was inaugurated in South Africa last year has raised the much needed funds for UNICEF in support of projects aimed at alleviating the plights of the underprivileged children in Kaduna State and its environs.

Further checks also revealed that from the Charity Shield, the Calvary will move to the neighbouring university town of Zaria as there are strong indications that Zaria Polo Club is planning to host its annual tournament this year after years in doldrums.

Initially billed for the Easter holidays but pushed forward by weeks, the Zaria 2023 carnival would provide a convivial ambiance for the polo fraternity to celebrate the noble game of kings in the foremost Zazzau kingdom.

  • Nigeria will win 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, says Peseiro

Nigeria will win 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire, says Peseiro

The 34th edition of the continental most prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is still months away but Super Eagles’ Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro is buzzing with optimism that Nigeria can win her long awaited fourth title. MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN writes.

For all their acclaimed prowess in continental football, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have only won the flagship Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on three occasions with maiden victory on home in 1980 when ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu hoisted the big trophy at the National Stadium in Surulere.

The other two victories came in 1994 when Dutchman Clemens Westerhof assembled arguably the country’s best generation of talents ably led by late captain Stephen Okechukwu Keshi to eclipse the rest of the continent in Tunisia while Keshi would later made history in 2013 in South Africa as the second former player and coach to win the AFCON after legendary late Egyptian Mahmoud El-Gohary.

Apart from these three standout performances, the Super Eagles have remained in the continental wilderness in search of another title but the country’s new Portuguese manager remains bullish about the chances of the Super Eagles under his watch.

Appointed the 48th coach of the Super Eagles and the first Portuguese to manage Nigeria in May 2022, Peseiro said the quality of talents at his disposal is one of the factors that make him giddy with naked optimism that Nigeria will win her long-awaited fourth title.

“As you all know, our goal is to qualify for the (2023) AFCON, and then win the competition,” Peseiro who would be 63 on April 4, exclusively told NationSport.“We are first in the group (Group A), we broke the record goals in a game against Sao Tome & Principe, and played friendly games against strong teams, where we have tested and evaluated individual and collective situations.”

In almost one year on the job, Peseiro’s Super Eagles are yet to command the kind of respect accorded Nigeria’s national team in the days of yore when the continent was their oysters .

Four losses in international friendly matches albeit against some of the best global soccer playing countries including Portugal, Mexico , Ecuador and Algeria coupled with two opening victories in the on-going 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome & Principe has not inspired confidence.

Yet Peseiro believed the Super Eagles have all what it take to rule the continent :“The quality of players Nigeria has( gives me the confidence that the Super Eagles can win the next AFCON).We have quality players and we have to create a good spirit and a good organization.”

Speaking further, the former Al Ahly of Egypt coach said he was also buoyed with the quality of strikers at his disposal with the likes of Victor Osimhen, Terem Moffi and Ademola Lookman firing on all cylinders, adding his overall desire is to build a formidable team capable of holding forte in all departments of the game.

On the last count, Osimhen has scored 25 goals for Napoli while both Lookman and Moffi have both banged 14 goals each respectively for Atalanta and OGC Nice in the current European season to the delight of Peseiro.

“I’m happy to have good strikers,” noted Peseiro, a great fan of French star striker and 2022 Ballon d’Or winner , Karim Benzema. “But a team is a collective, made up of players with different characteristics, and everyone has to defend and attack.”

As the Super Eagles take on the Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau qualifiers today and next week, Peserio who has already been pilloried for the choice of some players for the 2023 AFCON double header qualifiers, said he was guided by the old coaching dictum that ‘you don’t change a winning team’.

“All Nigerian players have the possibility to play for the Super Eagles team, for that they will have to show quality, ambition and spirit,” assured Peseiro, a striker in his heydays. “ But you have to realize that to make an organized and spirited team, you can’t change the players too much.

“The short time of work in the selection, forces us to maintain a stable group of players,” he added.

Yet Peseiro has showed a puritanical devotion to his job since he came on board as the Super Eagles manager by making whistle-stop visits across Europe to check on his wards as well as conferring with coaches of other levels of the national team all in a bid to create a united front.

“As I said, we have a lot of good players,” he further said.“ By visiting them, I intend to get to know the reality where they train and play, talk to their coaches and, talking to them, create the spirit we want for our team.”

He also hazard the prospects for some of the current players in the national U-17 and U-20:“The two teams have a lot of name players, who will definitely reach the Super Eagles.”

Next week, the Coruche-born Peseiro who shares birth year with Nigeria’s independence from the British government, would be 63 on 4th April, has quipped w about the secrets about his enthusiastic outlook as well as some rare insights about his urbane personality.

“ I live a happy life, always looking for the positive points in life, with emotion, love and motivation,” he offered. “I like sport a lot. Practically all sports. I have a degree in sports, with a specialty in football and a master’s degree in this area as well. That’s what fascinates me.

“I played in a European Final (UEFA CUP), I won trophies, but the most important thing was how I dedicated myself 100% to all projects, the emotion I shared with everyone who worked with me and the friendships I built around the world.”

Yet Peseiro stirred the hornet’s nest with his choice of the best player for the 2022 FIFA Best Awards as he picked French talisman Karim Benzema over World Cup winner, Lionel Messi.

“I nominated the best in the world, Karim Benzema,” he sounded off.

  • Super Eagles vs. Wild Dogs : Osimhen, Lookman, Ajayi talk tough

Super Eagles vs. Wild Dogs : Osimhen, Lookman, Ajayi talk tough

The Super Eagles players have assured that they are on the prowl and ready to consume the visiting Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau as they sweat to bring back smiles to Nigerians after the disappointment of missing out of the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup . TUNDE LIADI writes.

After nine months hiatus occasioned by Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup , African countries return this week for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to be hosted next year in Cote’ d’ Ivoire.

Incidentally, the Super Eagles are among the teams positioning themselves for another ticket to the AFCON after their surprise second round exit in Cameroon last year.

Now being led by Portuguese coach, Jose Peseiro, the Super Eagles will hope to make light work of Djurtus of Guinea Bissau whom they host today in Abuja before heading to Bissau on Monday to complete the double header .

The Super Eagles presently hold a two point cushion atop Group A of the qualifiers with six points from their opening two games. A possible two wins over the Wild Dogs could see them extend the gap to eight points ahead of Guinea Bissau who are currently on four points after two games.

In fact, Nigeria’s cause for quick qualification has been boosted following the 2-2 draw result recorded by the other two teams in the group, Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe in Morocco on Wednesday.

Napoli’s goal machine, Victor Osimhen scored five goals in the opening two games of the qualifiers including four against Sao Tome and Principe, has exuded confidence that Nigeria would carry the day.

“We are looking forward to both games (against Guinea Bissau) and I am happy to be back in the squad,” Osimhen said in an interview with NFF Tv. “ It is an amazing feeling and I am expecting amazing results. We do not underrate our opponents. We must accord them the respect they deserve.

“As a team, we are ready to give our all on Friday and to do as well in the return leg in Bissau.”

Osimhen has scored 25 goals from 28 games in all competitions for Napoli and his five goals from two 2023 AFCON qualifying games played in June last year makes him the leading scorer in the campaign thus far.

He assured Nigerians that the Eagles will fight for the six points in both games and that though he would be happy to end the qualifiers as the highest scorer, but that the team comes first ahead of personal glory.

“I want to promise them (Nigerians) that we are going to do everything to win the game. I hope to contribute with a lot of goals and assists. The team comes first. We will make sure they are happy by getting a win and also the qualifying ticket to AFCON.

“I don’t care about being the highest scorer in the qualifying series. The team comes first but then if goals come from me and I emerge as the highest scorer it will be a plus for me. I want to win lots of games with this team.

“I want to thank you for support for the team and me. I know we might have let you down in the past but we will do everything possible to win your love and trust back,” he noted.

Osimhen’s Serie A colleague, Ademola Lookman who has scored 12 goals in the league alone in his debut season for the Donkeys, is also confident that the Super Eagles would get the maximum points against Guinea Bissau.

“We are looking forward to seeing another opportunity for us in the race to qualify for the next AFCON. It is a big chance for us to get closer to that,” the former Everton and Leicester City attacker told NFF Tv.” It is nice to score goals and I hope to take the same spirit to the games with Guinea Bissau.

“The most important thing is about the team and getting the ticket to AFCON is the most important for now.”

Another Eagle raring to go ahead of the Friday’s contest is Semilogo Ajayi whose English Championship club, West Brom is angling for a return to the EPL. He noted with enthusiasm that he would give his best if fielded to ensure that Nigeria gets the maximum points both home and away.

“I am looking forward to both important games in the race for AFCON . Everyone is hungry and raring to go. We are taking in the information from the coach and ready to put it into practice,” Ajayi said.

“I must give my best to represent my country. I am really looking forward to the games and can’t wait to play,” he said.

  • Pundit backs Man U to pay €130M for Osimhen

Pundit backs Man U to pay €130M for Osimhen

Italian pundit Gianluca di Marzio has revealed that Manchester United would need to shell out between €130 million and €150 million to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli and the Red Devils can afford to pay that sum.

Osimhen was heavily linked with a switch to Old Trafford last summer in a potential swap deal involving Cristiano Ronaldo but the move never went through, as the Nigerian wanted to stay at Napoli and the time in the transfer window was quite limited to pull through with a complicated deal.

Napoli should now be glad that the move never went through, as Osimhen is firing on all cylinders. But Di Marzio, in a chat with Kelbet, has revealed that Osimhen has been United’s key target for a couple of seasons now and he is their priority over Harry Kane.

He stated: “Man United´s main target is definitely Osimhen and he has been that for at least two seasons. He is an excellent player and very unique with his skills.”

“The situation around Harry Kane is a bit weird. Obviously, Man United will try to get him if they are not getting Osimhen, who is their top priority.”

Di Marzio revealed that while Osimhen is United’s target, Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the Nigerian but United are the favourites to sign the player.

“I think that Osimhen could leave Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain could be a possibility for him.”

“But Manchester United are probably the favourites to get him.”

There has been talk of Napoli not looking to deal with clubs that are offering less than €150 million for Osimhen, but Di Marzio stated that the Partenopei would sell the ex-Lille man for anything between €130 million and €150 million. United could also afford to pay that.

“I think that Napoli will let Osimhen go for between €130-150 million. Man United can afford that.”

Osimhen has already reached the 25-goal mark in all competitions for Napoli and he recently broke Samuel Eto’o’s record for the highest number of goals in a single season by an African player in Serie A.

    • Ex-Man U grabs 197th appearance

Cristiano Ronaldo last night broke the FIFA record for men’s international caps with a 197th appearance after appearing in Portugal’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Liechtenstein.

There were doubts over whether the 38-year-old would feature in the squad again after being dropped from the starting XI at the World Cup, but he has kept his place under new boss Roberto Martinez.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner overtakes the total of Kuwait forward Badr Al-Mutawa having previously earned his 196th cap against Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar.

The ex-Man United star’s goal-scoring form at Al Nassr resulted in a call-up despite fears that the questionable competitiveness of the division could have seen him snubbed.

Ronaldo earned his first Portugal cap at the age of 18, when he came on for Luis Figo in a friendly against Kazakhstan in 2003.

Ronaldo surpassed Ali Daei last September for the most international goals by a men’s player, scoring two goals against the Republic of Ireland to go clear of the Iranian’s total of 109.

The 38-year-old has since taken his tally to 118 goals for his nation.

Al-Mutawa achieved the feat in Kuwait’s 3-0 defeat by Jordan in qualification for the 2023 Asian Cup.

The forward, who has scored 56 goals for his country, currently plays for Qadsia in the Kuwait Premier League.

The 37-year-old had previously held the title in 2021, only for FIFA to validate Malaysia’s Soh Chin Ann’s total at 195

Ligue 1 may not stop pause for Ramadan

Following reports that Premier League referees had been asked to pause matches to allow Muslim players to break their fast during Ramadan on sunset, L’Équipe claimed yesterday that no such measure has been requested in the case of the French top flight.

For the time being, no Ligue 1 club has submitted a request to the league authorities, and as a result the subject has not been addressed yet – but it could be during the international break, given that the Islamic holy month began yesterday.

Meanwhile, , L’Équipe had also reported that the French national team players who intended to observe Ramadan would be delaying the start of their fast by five days, until the end of their commitments with Les Bleus. The France staff had recommended that the players do so – but not forced them.

Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kanté, who are absent from Les Bleus’ team this month having only recently recovered from injury, were among the senior players to have fasted during World Cup preparations five years ago, as well as during the Euro 2016, going against the staff’s advice.

This time, there are reportedly few Muslim players in the squad for France’s first two games of their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. In yesterday’s press conference, forward Marcus Thuram had welcomed the decision to allow for breaks during matches in England – “It’s a step forward, it’s only the beginning.”

Nigeria is expected to field a strong team, including some of the continent’s most talented players such as Victor Osimhen, and Wilfred Ndidi.

Osimhen, who has now netted 15 times for his country, currently sits ninth in the all-time scoring charts while boasting the best goal-to-game ratio of anybody in the top 10.

Currently unbeaten on home turf since 2021, Today’s hosts will be looking to put on a dominant display in front of what is set to be an expectant home crowd.

On the other hand, Guinea-Bissau will be looking to cause an upset and secure their place in the AFCON tournament.
