    Pension complaints and solutions

ANNONYMOUS: I want to remain annonymous. I retired in February 2013 from a Federal Government agency.

I was with Stanbic IBTC Pension before I embraced annuity with Leadway Assurance some years later. Please, I need clarification on the following issues. The first is: – What is 2.5 per cent about and am I entitled to it? Secondly, my monthly pension has not been enhanced since the inception of pension allowance enhancement; and thirdly, when will contributory pensioners enjoy allowance increment like the Defined Benefit pensioners?

PENCOM: Dear Sir, the 2.5 per cent was the differential in the rate of pension contributions for Federal Government employees from 2014 when the rate of employer contributions was increased to 10 per cent.

The pension enhancement applies only to retirees receiving pension under the programmed withdrawal method administered by the Pension Fund Administrators.

Therefore, being under Retiree Life Annuity, you do not qualify for pension enhancement.

PENCOM: Dear Okezie, you can visit www.pencom.gov.ng to read up on the pension enhancement. You can also visit the PFA to get more information.

IFEANYI: Good day, my name is Ifeanyi. I am from Anambra State. I am the next of kin to my wife, the late Chinyere. She worked at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State until her death on September 26, 2019.

The government has not paid her death benefit, until I finished processing her documents with Stanbic IBTC Pension on March 8, last year.

PENCOM: Please liasie with the Stanbic IBTC PFA to find out the status of the application.

ANNONYMOUS: Good day, I will like to know when retirees from the public service, who retired in March 2022, are to be paid.

PENCOM: Please provide more details such as name of the previous employer, PFA, PIN and status of enrolment.

EFE: Good day, my name is Efe. Your efforts to ensure retirees are not subjected to untold hardship on retirement are highly appreciated.

I want to know if you only attend to  federal employees. I ask this question because I am a retired from the Local Government Service Commission, Asaba, the Delta State capital in October 2020.

I have not been able to access my RS, although my PFA, Trustfund Pension, sent me a text message that I could access my RSA, after presenting a letter from Asaba. I am confused.

Please do advise on what to do.

PENCOM: Please send your PIN to enable the Commission investigate your complaint.

UREGI: My name is Uregi. PenCom recently issued a circular on pension enhancement payment in which it indicated that “the exercise is for retirees under PW who have accumulated significant growth in their RSAs”.

This criterion appears confusing, and if left to PFAs, they could be subjectively implement it.

Therefore, every pensioner should enjoy an enhancement every three years, because pensioners’ funds should have been gainfully invested during intervals of the three years.

No pensioner would believe that his fund in the RSA was not invested for three years.

I retired in Febraury 2014, but I got enhancement only once – in 2017. I was denied an increment in 2020. I was also not convinced why I was excluded.

Surely, I must have expressed the mind of thousands of concerned pensioners.

Please provide us more explanation on this issue.

PenCom: The process is carried out by the PFAs under the approval of the Commission.

    ‘Uphold rights of female candidates’

Gender and Election Watch (GEW) Room of Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) has urged relevant   stakeholders to uphold rights of female candidates in the elections.

In a statement in Abuja, it condemned efforts and attempts to truncate emergence of female candidates.

Chief Executive Officer of GEW, Mufuliat Fijabi, noted Nigeria cannot achieve inclusive democracy without female participation.

Fijabi said delay and uncertainty around results of Adamawa State governorship elections is not encouraging for women who contested positions and a negative indication for inclusive democratic practice which Nigeria should aim at.

She hailed female candidates for their resilience and participation in the polls.

On last Saturday’s elections, Fijabi said Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) made  some improvement with logistics.

Noting GEW deployed 350 observers, she called on security agencies to do more to keep peace and protect lives.

“The trend of incumbent governors banning NGO observers is a bad practice, especially when INEC has accreditated them to observe elections and a definitive legal statement by INEC must be issued to stop future recurrence”, Fijabi said.

  • Clergy, kids bid tearful farewell to ‘seasoned teacher’ Alonge

Clergy, kids bid tearful farewell to ‘seasoned teacher’ Alonge

Tributes poured in at the weekend for the late Madam Rachael Folashade Alonge,an educationist.

She was described as  a seasoned school teacher and a faithful, exemplary, enduring and dedicated wife of the Alonge  family.

It was at the funeral service  for Madam  Alonge at the Church  of Assumption, Falomo Ikoyi, Lagos.

Madam  Alonge died on January 3. She was 81.

She   taught at Saint Gregory College, Obalende, Lagos and was Vice Principal at Saint Finbarr’s College, Akoka, Lagos among others. Emeritus Catholic Bishop of Ondo Diocese  Rev Francis Folorunso Alonge, who was brother in-law to the deceased was represented by Rev. Father Emmanuel Aladesiun, his Personal Secretary.

Bishop Alonge  said: “Although it is sad to hear that she is no longer physically with us, we are, however, grateful to God the giver of life for her life and her legacy of a wonderful Catholic woman.

“May God grant her merciful judgment, and may the angels of God lead her to the bosom of Abraham our father in faith. And may the Lord graciously console and bless the entire Alonge family with good health and long life,” the cleric  said

Speaking during the homily, the Parish Priest, Church of the Assumption, Rev Fr Francis Ike recalled a well-known song among the pupils that Mama must have sang during her active period as a professional teacher.

The song goes thus: “Oh my home, oh my home. When shall I see my home? When shall I see my beautiful home? I will never forget my home.”

Mama would be smiling where she is now and I know she is with the Lord, the priest said.

Describing death as a necessary debt everyone must pay, the priest said that the preaching of death is not meant for the dead but for the living.

“Nobody wants to talk about death because death is not what we want to hear about but it is the faith in the resurrection that has gathered us here today. Faith that those who  live in Christ and die in Christ will also rise with him. Resistance from death has not kept man away from it. Man must accept this reality willingly that death will come one day. The earlier we accept the responsibility, the better for us.”

One of the daughters, Mrs Tokunbo Oguine who spoke with The Nation at the funeral, described her mother as a selfless woman who devoted her life to her family.

“She’s a selfless person. She’s always devoted her life to her family and all the other children that she brought up apart from her own immediate biological children. So she’s a very self-sacrificial person, she was the glue that held the whole family together and all the relatives and everyone, so there’s a lot of goodwill as you can see here as well because she was loved by so many people. She was one in a million for me, so remarkable.”

Mrs Oguine said that she would always remember her ‘beautiful mother for her love and compassion’.

“Her kindness, tolerance, big heart and her capacity to endure so much will always be part of me. She endured a lot. I learned how to just be a better person. She taught us how to be you, know better and do better every single day. So that I would carry them with me all along she had good moral values that she instilled in us. So I will always remember that,” she said.

Madam  Alonge  was laid to rest at the Vaults and Garden (Mayfair) at Lekki- Express Way, Awoyaya, Epe.

She was born in Isie in Kwara State. Her late parents Mr and Mrs Ezekiel Ore were devoted Anglican.

Former Commissioner for Information in Ekiti State, Sir Kayode Otitoju, former Group Managing Director of UACN,Mr Ayo Ajayi and others paid tributes at the funeral.  Sir Otitoju described Mama as lucky. He said:

“Chief Mrs Folashade Alonge was  blessed as she had her Brother-inlaw as the Emeritus Bishop of Ondo Diocese, Bishop FCF Alonge and a biological son- Akinboboye Alonge, a Pentecostal Bishop in Abuja. Mummy Alonge was a unifier and a devout  Catholic that never missed daily Morning Mass when she was still strong”. Mr. Ayo Ajayi, former Group Managing Director of UACN , while giving his tribute eulogised Late Mrs Folashade Alonge who he described as a fantastic ‘sister’ from thesame Ayede Ekiti Town with him, prayed for repose of her soul before giving a final Vote of Thanks for the  Service of Songs night.

  • It is not over with you, says the Lord!

It is not over with you, says the Lord!

    • Text: ” Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back…. the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground…” – Exodus 14:21,22

    By Venerable Henry O. Adelegan

Have you gotten to an end of the road financially, politically, physically or matrimonially? Have you lost out in the electioneering process? Is the path before you blocked and there are threats of death from your rear? Does it appear that you are helpless and hopeless? Please be informed that with God, there is no road closed. It is surely not over you. You are going to bounce back. The blocked roads shall soon be opened for you. With Him, all things are possible (Matt. 19:26). When He decides to bless anyone, He suspends protocol and changes the red light to green. In Genesis 21:1-5, Doctors and nature confirmed that the 89 years old woman will never have a baby, when God stepped in however, He reversed the laws of nature and turned her menopause to ‘menostart, and she gave birth at age 90 without any complications. It is surely not over with Nigeria and it is definitely not over with you. Roads that were closed before shall be opened by the power of God into an expressway and you shall have an easy passage to your Promised land.

The Almighty God is the creator of heaven and earth; He is the One that makes a seemingly bad case perfect and “…. by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist”. (Col. 1:16-17). When He decides to visit your life, He would give you a testimony of awe, such that people who knew you before will be amazed at the turnaround of your situation; He would take the weeping of the night time away from you and give you an endless morning of joy (Psalm 30:5); He would orchestrate a circumstance that will compel people assigned to lift you up to overlook your educational gap, to suspend your no experience issue, to close their eyes to your family background, not to remember that you are younger or older, as it played out with Jephtah the Gileadite in Judges 11:1-8 when people that previously rejected him returned to beg him to be their leader.

In a local community years back, a man made a steamboat which was the first to be constructed in the area. When he was through, he called everyone to come and see ‘what the Lord has done’. The people of the community followed him to the bank of the river, but skeptically and with disdain. In a sarcastic manner, they requested him to put the steamboat to work. With excitement, the innovator puts his hand to ignite the steamboat to get it working. It was very unfortunate that the innovator tried countless times but the steamboat didn’t come on. The community people burst into uncontrollable laughter and started mocking that, “Henry’s steamboat will not start”. The man was undaunted and continued to try while they were all giggling. Suddenly, the engine came on and Henry jumped in with great excitement and was driving the steamboat all over the water. The people were startled, but they refused to give up with their pessimism. So, they changed the level of their mockery to another level and were all chorusing that, “Henry’s steamboat will not stop. Henry made a steamboat that wouldn’t stop”.  Eventually, and in the face of the mockers, Henry brought the boat safely to shore and they now gathered hugging him and saying “Henry has performed a miracle. Wow, Henry is a miracle worker”

From our text, the Israelites after their deliverance and departure from Egypt were faced with a Red Sea cul-de-sac at their front and death from their former captors was hot on their trail, they complained very bitterly to Moses and were downcast. Moses encouraged them to stand still and see God’s power in action but God told him that they should match on to the Red Sea. And as he stretched forth his rod over the sea, their hopeless situation was turned around. Instantly, the Red Sea parted sideways, the waters piled on their right and left hands such that they could scoop water from their sides and when they got to the other side, the army of Pharaoh got into the same path they followed, the water returned and the soldiers, their chariot-men, their weapon of warfare and their horses were consumed by the sea.

Are you jobless despite degrees from the university? Is it that you are of marriageable age and their is no suitor. Are you or any of your children trusting God for the fruit of the womb and time is going towards menopause? Is it that you are trusting God for elevation at your place of work or ministry? Is it that people that ought to help you have been turned against you? Please note that God is alive. He is the same yesterday as He is today and shall be forever (Hebrews 13:8). What He did yesterday, He is going to do in your life this season, your cast down shall turn to your lifting up and you shall testify to His goodness? God is going to step into your life. He would send an angel to liberate you from ‘Herod’s captivity’, all that the captors have taken from you shall be restored to you with great interest, doors that have been shut shall open unto you of their own accord and the Herods running after your life shall make mistakes that will end their lives in the name of Jesus.

To be a candidate of His awesome miracle during this time of Lent, you must surrender your life to Jesus Christ, confess your sins to Him, ask for His forgiveness, be determined not to return to sin again, be reconciled with all that have wronged you, live peacefully with all men, put on the garb of holiness, have faith in Him and pray for a miracle that “eyes have not seen, that ears have not heard and not come to the imagination of men” (1 Cor. 2:9). As He lives, you shall testify of His faithfulness soon and your miracles shall be proclaimed in your tabernacle and heralded for the world to hear about in Jesus’ name.

Prayer: Oh Lord arise and turn my challenges into testimonies in the name of Jesus Christ

During training, teachers were exposed to teaching techniques, and best practices in classroom management and pupil engagement.

They were also trained in digital tools and technology, key components of Bridge Nigeria’s teaching approach.

Over 700m persons face global water stress, says UN body

United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has said over 700 million people in the world face high and critical water stress.

It noted over 90 per cent of natural disasters are water related as global water availability and quality are deteriorating.

Deputy Director-General of FAO, Maria Semedo,  said  two-thirds of world’s population could face water shortages by 2050.

With agriculture accounting for 72 per cent of freshwater withdrawals, she said additional 35 per cent in water resources will be needed by 2050 to meet growing demand for food, fibre and feed.

Semedo, who noted that agriculture must lead the way to exit the water crisis, said strong political will is needed as well as proper planning.

“If we are to protect the future of food, and meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the needs and role of agriculture must be supported.

“Agriculture itself needs to get more efficient at using water, better at keeping pollutants out of water bodies, and more resilient to climate change.

“The key is to act now with integrated water resource management approaches to produce more food, fibre, feed and biofuel with less water, more sustainably”, Semedo noted.

She, however, said FAO is working to address water scarcity in agriculture and the environment initiative, built on success in the near East and North Africa, which is expanding to Asia and the Pacific.

She further said FAO is developing projects on indigenous drought resilient crops.

The FAO chief added the body will support the Water Action Agenda that emerges from UN 2023 Water Conference through transformation to more efficient, resilient, inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems.

  • ‘Reject cases by disobedient agencies’

    ‘Reject cases by disobedient agencies’

JUDICIAL Integrity Lawyers (JILAW) yesterday demanded action against agencies disobeying court orders.

It called on National Judicial Council (NJC) to direct courts to reject cases by  agencies disobeying court orders.

The group urged President Muhammadu Buhari to “address disobedience to rule of law and assault on Judiciary.”

JILAW, a group of over 250 constitutional and human rights lawyers, made the recommendations in a statement at its conference briefing.

“We believe persistent abuse of power by public officials is an aberration which has attained notoriety… We wish to state that equality before the law is the only true protection against oppression and undue influence that those in authority would dangle over heads of ordinary Nigerians.

“You will recall that it took direct intervention of President Buhari for the Governor of Central Bank to obey a judgment of Supreme Court on the naira redesign policy. This was after the flagrant disobedience to the preliminary judgement of the same court.

“Even now, our meeting agreed the Federal Government has not fully complied with the judgment with regard to other aspects of the policy, which has continued to put Nigerians through hardship.

“Another disturbing example of one of those institutions that have become notorious for disregarding the sanctity of our courts and infringing on rights of citizens, is Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).”

The lawyers reasoned that the implications of the disregard for the Judiciary and disobedience to laws, are beyond individual victims or the integrity of these agencies.

It said both at home and abroad, “this badge of shame stains our collective national consciousness and makes a daily mockery of Nigerian laws.”

They urged the NJC to direct courts not entertain any cases brought before them by any agency of the government that disobeys court orders.

Adamawa: women politicians, professionals, others warn against foul play

    • Insist on Senator Binani

Under the leadership of  Mrs. Remi Adiukwu, a prominent female politician and former governorship candidate in Lagos State, hundreds of women politicians across party lines, professionals in both public and private sectors, activists and other concerned women, have thrown their weight behind Senator Aisha Dahiru Ahmed a.k.a Binani, in her quest to be declared as the governor elect of Adamawa State. The women, in a statement made available to reporters in Abuja yesterday, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be guided by the spirit of equity and justice, with fairness to women paramount in its mind, as it deliberates over the stalled Adamawa governorship poll.

Under the auspice of a group BINANI’S MANDATE; WOMEN’S MANDATE, the Adiukwu-led women informed the electoral body of allegations of massive rigging of votes and inflations of result figures in some parts of the state in favour of the PDP candidate.

“In view of these allegations, we strongly advice that INEC should seriously scrutinize the purported results from Michika, Hong, and Madagali Local Governments, where the governor’s camp and their collaborators came up with outrageous votes in their bid to suppress the people’s mandate freely given to Senator Binani,” the group said.

The statement,  which was signed by Chief Adiukwu, Faith Pukuma and Ms Sonate James, among others, described Binani as “a giant of a woman and strong political soldier that fought her battle without fear, alone, with the support for the good people of the state.

We resist the ongoing tactical attempt to rob her of her hard earned mandate and call on all well meaning Nigerians to oppose another attempt to deprive women of our place in governance and politics.”

The governorship election in Adamawa State has been declared inconclusive by INEC. The Returning Officer, Mohammed Mele, said elections were not held in 47 wards across the twenty-one local government areas of the State.

According to him the total number of rejected/canceled and invalid votes which are  37,616 exceed the margin of lead that is 31,249, a final result cannot be declared for the state.

  • Polls: CSOs indict police on electoral violence

Polls: CSOs indict police on electoral violence

A Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in collaboration with Connected Development (CODE) have indicted the  Police Force on electoral violence during last Saturday’s governorship  elections.

CODE Founder, Hamzat Lawal said the police did not live up to expectations.

According to him, the police played a huge role in undermining the elections in several polling units because armed police were not available and did not respond when observers and voters reported cases of violence.

CODE in collaboration with Accountability lab and Dean initiatives made the statement at a news conference in Abuja.

He stated: “The police did not live up to expectations with such level of violence. We hope that they will do more. They actually undermined the elections. The armed policemen were not available and did not respond when we escalated the issue of violence. It is an indictment on police and Inspector General of Police who had assured voters of security.

“Despite all of these faults that we have observed, we cannot say that the commission has not done well in some areas for example we observed that we recorded the early opening of polls in 79% of polling units observed by CODE as opposed to the less than 30% in the February 25 Presidential  elections. We must commend the functionality of the BVAS in this election. This indicates the commission’s commitment to embracing this new technology in our electioneering process.

“First, let me reiterate that we condemn in strong terms the attack and suppression of voters in a number of polling units. For example, in Ebonyi State, one of our own, an accredited  field observer, Uzodimma Lucy Ogodo was brutally attacked for refusing to vote for a particular party.

“This is unacceptable and against the tenets of democracy which we strive so hard to maintain as a nation. The democratic contract of our country dictates that we as citizens have the exclusive right to determine who our leaders are and we must protect this right, and this is why we are again calling on security agencies to act swiftly and ensure justice is served.”
