    • Physically challenged artist makes life-size bead painting of governor

Adewale Mufutau Balogun is a brilliant bead artist who prides himself with having clients across the top echelon of society. Although physically challenged, Balogun is celebrated for rising above his limbs disability to having his beaded portraits garnishing galleries and living rooms of influential personalities. One of his recent prized works is the life size handmade glass beaded portrait of Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Evelyn Osagie writes.

THE life-size beaded portrait of Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomes visitors into one of the offices of Number 150 Adebowale House, Onipanu, Lagos. From the portrait of former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Mimiko, to that of the Ooni of Ife, to that of the United States’ president, Joe Biden’s, the place has housed and still houses several prized bead works of the artist.

The handmade beaded portrait of Governor Sanwo-Olu made of uncountable grains of sand beads is one of such prized works of brilliant bead artist, Adewale Mufutau Balogun.

Although on crutches, having lost the use of his legs as an infant, Balogun, who is a protégé of the late ace artist, Dr. David Herbert Dale of blessed memory, is not deterred. Driven by passion, the young man is a classic case of ability in disability.

Hear him: “There is nothing called DISABILITY. To me disability is not a predicament but opportunity if we can see it from the right perspectives. I believe I am customised not deformed: make use of the available ability.”

Balogun, surely, is a man of tall dreams. His beaded portraits, owing to their exquisiteness, now garnish galleries and living rooms of kings, captains of industries and influential political figures.

Aside these great accomplishments, Balogun told this reporter that his greatest dream at the moment is to meet and get an executive handshake from the Lagos State governor, Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu someday soon.

His reason? He said, “I see him worthy of the honour. Although I have never met him, I am in love his kind of person. I just love him as a person. It is one of my greatest dreams to have a handshake with Governor Sanwo-Olu and present him with the life-size 4ft x 6ft unusual handmade portrait done by fusing glass beads together.”

The work, which was started in July, was completed in September. When asked how many bags of beads he had to use, he said: “Too busy to count but I know the work is made of billions, trillions and uncountable grains of sand beads of different colours and sizes. It took me three months and I worked 12 hours every day.”

On the inspiration behind the work, Balogun said: “I was inspired to do His Excellency, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s portrait to immortalise him, like the Ooni Ile-Ife and others that I have done. It is also to celebrate his good deeds in Lagos. It is my way of saying “thank you”; because although I now shuttle Lagos and Ibadan, I was born and brought up here in Lagos. It is great joy to me seeing the rapid development taking place in the state, which is seemingly turning it into a small London and a pride of Nigeria. I am particularly impressed by the Imota Rice Mill, which is the largest in sub-Saharan Africa, the LAGFEERY (Lagos State ferry transport), the blue lane intra-city rail system, among others.”

Aside the governor’s portrait and that of President Biden and a few others already cited above, the artist also has a rich catalogue of influential people’s portraits, like that of the Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde; his predecessor, the late Abiola Ajimobi; former Osun State governor, Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Lagos State governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola and his wife; business mogul, Jimoh Ibrahim; telecoms mogul, Chief Mike Adenuga; the late Honourable Olatoye Sugar, to mention but a few.

“Some of my works are in the US, Canada and Germany. These are the ones I can remember as we speak,” he said with relish.

Wondering if he has ever been accused of seeking cheap popularity, owing to his choice of influential people, Balogun responded, thus: “Nigeria needs model leadership. Everyone has a right to his or her opinion but my belief is that it is always good to recognise the good works our leaders are doing and also celebrate their success in our own little ways; not that we should be harping only on their mistakes, forgetting that they are also human beings that can be moved by words or deeds of encouragement.

“I know we are not there yet but we will get there. Let us celebrate oneness in this period of trials and appreciate those who have worked or working to maintain the peace and progress of society, like His Excellency is doing with all his land mark projects.”

True to his name, Balogun is like a warrior in defense of culture through his art, using beads.  The bead artist also named His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife’s portrait as his most memorable job yet, given its historic relevance.

“We only met once and I did the portrait before I met him. I’d followed him closely right from the time they were still trying to decide who will be Ooni. He was so impressed when he saw it. He thought it was a painting from a distance, but when he got closer, he was surprised. He asked, ‘Who did this?’ At that point, people around started shouting my name. He then approached the work and asked me if I did it. I told him it’s not painting but a beaded work. He was even more surprised. Then he said, ‘Give me your price.’ I told him I wasn’t selling. He then invited me to come see him in his palace. The rest, like they say, is history,” he said.

  • Prepare men for heaven, cleric tells Church leaders

Prepare men for heaven, cleric tells Church leaders

LEAD Pastor and Founder, of HillTop City Christian Center, (HTC), Victor Akintunde has appealed to church leaders to place more emphasises on the true gospel of Jesus that saves souls and prepares men for heaven and avoid doctrinal teachings that run contrary to the teachings of Christ.

Akintunde said this recently in an interview with The Nation at the church Singles Connect held at the church International Headquarters in Ojodu, Lagos, said that the church must stay clear from an ideology that runs contrary to the word of God.

He said that the word of God remains our standard and is the touch we bear, and they are high, unbroken, and unchangeable.

He sounded a note of warning to men of God who monetizes gospel gathering and revivals, reemphasizing that salvation has been given freely to humanity by Christ Jesus.

He lamented that the influence of the internet and the global village phenomenon possess a serious challenge to ministers of God today, stressed that every man of God called by God must know that they have a responsibility to teach the people the right message and if they don’t, they will bear part of the responsibility for their errors ultimately.

He admonished singles preparing for a happy marriage life to establish their place in God before venturing into marriage.

He urged Christian singles not to go through the route of the world in choosing who to marry, adding that glorifying God in all things, including marriage is imperative.

“Let us focus on things that God will be happy about. It is very possible to have a clear relationship in our time. It is possible to have a relationship that does not glorify the flesh”.

“We need to establish our place in God. The desire to marry must not overshadow our desire t please God, saying that some will not marry until they died”.

He asked are you willing to serve God if the marriage fails to happen. It is important that we re-established our relationship with God because many have missed it because of the pressure to marry/

“They compromise on God’s standard and they pay for it. It is troubled and their relationship with God cut off and eventually, their marriage ended and they are back to square one”, he said.

  • ‘Oil sabotage allegations against NNPCL’s Adokiye, smear campaign’

‘Oil sabotage allegations against NNPCL’s Adokiye, smear campaign’

The Centre for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade (CHURAC), has described allegations of oil facilities sabotage against the Executive Vice President of the Nigerian Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mr. Tombomieye Adokiye, as a “politically motivated smear campaign” and “lies” by mischievous fifth columnists.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Warri, Delta state Saturday, it particularly warned the faceless group, ‘Niger Delta Youths and Stakeholders Congress’ to refrain from being used as pawn to rubbish the hard-earned reputation of the only Niger Deltan holding such sensitive office in the NNPCL.

Urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to keep ignoring the purported petition by the group to shame those behind the blackmailers, the statement which was signed by its Board of Trustee’s Chairman, Cleric Ebikonbowei Alaowei, Esq., claimed the faceless group is being sponsored by some vested interest coveting the office of Mr. Adokiye.

The said group had in a petition dated January 28, 2022 and addressed to the EFCC chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, alleged that Adokiye was deliberately sabotaging the economy of Nigeria through alleged sponsorship of crude oil bunkering and theft and deliberately excluded core Niger Delta youths and other stakeholders from all NNPC concessional empowerment in the upstream subsidiaries.

The petition which was recently published in an online medium, further accused Adokiye of plotting to instigate a mega protest and crisis in the oil-rich region to create negotiation for his emergence as Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL.

The statement reads: “The allegations of oil facilities sabotage levelled against the Executive Vice President of the Nigerian Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mr. Tombomieye Adokiye by one faceless group of stomach hustlers are the handiwork of some vested interest coveting the office of Mr. Adokiye, especially his soon-to-be promoted office.

“Some vested interest and born-to-rule crusaders are the ones coveting the office of the only Niger Deltan holding such sensitive office. Hence, they recruited some willing tools to carry out smear campaigns against the man.

“The petition purportedly written to the EFCC by the Niger Delta Youths and Stakeholders Congress against Mr. Tombomieye Adokiye is a fallacy of ad baculum and thus, did not deserve the attention of the anti-graft agency.

“We’re not surprised that the Commission has chosen not to respond to such cheap lies in the alleged petition, manufactured to achieve a primordial objective by their sponsors. We advise the said Group to engage itself in meaningful ventures instead of being used as a pawn in the chessboard.

“It is appalling that people can just manufacture cheap and unfiltered lies against an innocent man just because they’re eyeing his office.

“We warn enemies of progress to refrain from their nefarious activities. Nigeria belongs to all of us. We know the brains behind the uncouth and incendiary attacks on Mr. Adokiye. The man should be allowed to carry out his corporate responsibilities without let or hindrance.

“Even when the NNPCL management board is being dominated by a section of the country against the provisions of Federal Character Act to the resentment of the Niger Delta people, the region did not incite people to haul attack on the people who dominated the Board.

“Adokiye should be left alone to run the affairs of his office. The allegations levelled against him by that faceless group lacked all forms of merit. Only a myopic mind will buy into such incoherently pernicious lies.”

Industry stakeholders set to propose Creative Industries Development Bill

Prominent stakeholders in Nigeria’s creative industry have come together to discuss the proposed Creative Industries Development Bill (CIDB) and its potential to transform the Nigerian creative economy.

The interactive sessions between creative gurus and the presidency seek to enhance the industry through a well-designed action plan centered on putting the creatives “FIRST”: Funding, Incentives, Research, Skills, and Training.

Speaking at one of the meetings, the CIDB Stakeholders Engagement Sub-Committee Lead, Obi Asika described the bill as a whole of government and whole of nation approach with key stakeholders continuously engaged.

“The continuing stakeholder engagement sessions aim to provide an opportunity for industry professionals to engage with the CIDB team, understand the significance and benefits of the bill, and provide valuable insights to make it fit-for-purpose and shape the future of the creative industries in Nigeria.

“The bill seeks to create a transparent, lean, and modern commission to serve as a one-stop-shop for the creative industries. When passed into law, the CIDB becomes the Creative Industries Development Act (CIDA),” he said.

On his part, the Investment Banker and the CIDB Finance Sub-Committee Lead, Chukuka Chukuma, emphasized the importance of leaving no one behind and the need to enable and support the sector.

He explained that the bill is not intended to replace existing agencies but to act in the best interests of the creative industries, and drive collaboration. He noted that the private sector, development finance institutions, and global multilaterals all seek a clear line of sight into the sector, and the CIDB will meet their expectations and provide a one-stop-shop that facilitates seamless foreign direct investments.

The industry stakeholders commended the team and the efforts of the Minister of Information and Culture in promoting the kind of collaborative environment that led to the development of this laudable bill.

Other members of the CIDB Presidential Advisory team–including Davidson Oturu, Ojoma Ochai, Tonye Faloughi-Ekezie, Baba Agba, Enyi Omeruah, Femi Odugbemi, Ijeoma Onah, Moses Babatope, Titilayo Adebola, Eghosa Imasuen, Sam Onyemelukwe, Oswald Osaretin Guobadia, and Chichi Nwoko–were present to give further insights into the details of the CIDB.

Bella Shmurda speaks on evolving music genre

NIGERIAN singer Bella Shmurda has opened up on his evolving music genre.

In a chat with Dadaboy Ehiz on Apple Music 1, Bella Shmurda said he feels his music genre is too harsh for some folks, hence, he’s working on slowing it down to their taste.

He said, “I just feel like people feel like my vibe is hard to combine. It’s not something you can just wake up in the morning and just want to vibe to. It’s not just a vibe, it’s something you have to think about, something that goes a long way.”

Continuing, Shmurda said, “Me personally I’ve been trying to calm it down with my vibes, because I really want people to vibe with me. I don’t want it to be too hard for people to vibe with me. There are important people in this music industry that don’t like it, they can’t do it so harsh. You can’t do it too harsh because they won’t follow.”

  • Kwam 1’s struggle for Tinubu’s victory

Kwam 1’s struggle for Tinubu’s victory

Undoubtedly, music played an important role in the struggle of president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s long walks to victory. OLAITAN GANIU writes about how Fuji music star, Wasiu Ayinde Omogbolahan aka K1 de Ultimate expressed his loyalty to one of his benefactors using his musical prowess to campaign and eventually mobilise votes.

FROM the outset — before Tinubu won his party’s presidential ticket — the renowned Fuji star has been a mouthpiece for Tinubu by amplifying his presidential ambition through songs and active participation in mobilising people towards achieving the ambition. Not only because the musician is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), but because he believed in the dream and action plan of the former governor of Lagos State.

For KWAM 1, music is a potent tool to canvass and provoke the consciousness of the masses, so he swiftly hits the studio to compose a theme song to enrapture his fans worldwide towards his choice and emergence of Tinubu.

The 66-year-old entertainer would never fail to chant the political anthem whenever he was opportune to grab a microphone at party rallies, concerts, or Owambe parties. He would order his band to increase the tempo of the beats as he continues to sing the praises of Tinubu in Yoruba.

One of the popular anthem, which K1 hijacked after it was created by members of the Tinubu’s inner caucus, goes thus: “On your mandate we shall stand, Tinubu, on your mandate we shall stand. On your mandate, we shall stand.”

While many Nigerian celebrities were at loggerheads over their preferred political candidates on social media, the experienced performer was unbuffered, rather, drumming support for his leader and presidential candidate choice.

Loyal to Tinubu, the singer accompanied the APC candidate to different parts of the country, especially the Southwest regions to continue to propagate his political ambition.

On February 21 at the final rally in Lagos, the musician showcased his political capacity, acumen, and mobilization skill to the admiration of several politicians and elective office holders.

Aside from music, before the elections and during the campaign, the imminent artist also shared customised mobile phones amongst his fans as a way of showing his support for Tinubu’s presidential ambition last year.

“The musician is not just showing his support for the former Lagos governor alone, which he has been doing for many years through live and recorded songs, he has just taken delivery of customised mobile phones that have, not only pictures and expressions of Asiwaju but also the new song he has just composed for him,” the musician’s spokesperson, Kunle Rasheed said.

“Aside from the mobile phones, K1 will also be distributing CDs and other campaign materials that have set his pocket back hundreds of millions.”

As Nigerians wait for the inauguration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu come May 29, music lovers are also expecting to see K1 performing on the big stage in Aso Rock as he rolls out a specially dedicated album in the honour of Tinubu in collaboration with 9ice.

  • Why we’re supporting Sanwo-Olu – CPFN

    Why we’re supporting Sanwo-Olu – CPFN

The Christian Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (CPFN), Lagos State Chapter has thrown its weight behind the Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his deputy, Dr. Kadri Olufemi Hamzat, ahead of the forthcoming governorship election coming up on March 18.

CPFN Lagos State Chairman, Pastor Dr. Samuel Olumuyiwa Adeosun said this at a press conference held recently at The Apostolic Church, LAWNA Territorial Headquarters, Ketu Lagos.

Adeosun said that since the coming of this present unbroken democracy, Lagos State has been blessed to have highly intelligent people at the helm of her affairs that always come up with good programmes for the betterment of the masses.

He, therefore, said PFN had seen Sanwo-Olu’s performance, and it would continue to support him.

He noted that the Church supported Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his two terms of eight years and another person that took over from him was Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola who continued the good work for another eight years.

“The Church asked the party to give us a Christian candidate among them that is the political class, and so they gave Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, but he only served one term of four years. The Church insisted that they must give us another Christian and so came Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu whose first-year tenure is about to end and has won the nomination of his party for a second term.

“The Church is satisfied with his performance and we have agreed to stay solidly behind him for the success required for this second term bid at the poll coming up on Saturday, 18th of March. He has performed creditably well, he deserves a second term and by the grace of God, he will have it.”

Adeosun added: “the church will vote for him; Muslims equally promised to vote for him en-bloc; Lagos and Nigeria shall experience peace and prosperity in Jesus’ Mighty Name.”

He appealed to the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to play according to their set rules by getting to Polling Units on time with every necessary material needed for the hitch-free poll.

“Security officials should beef up security in violent prone areas to ensure votes count, lives and properties are safe; The electorate should come out en-mass and vote without abuse or any form of violence.

“Let us show the world that we are capable of organising elections peacefully even in a megacity like Lagos without riots and loss of lives. Remember that, it is just an election and another one shall be coming in four years’ time,” he said.

  • The church never prophesied on Nigeria’s next president -Ighele

The church never prophesied on Nigeria’s next president -Ighele

The Former Chairman of the Financial Accountability Commission of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria and General Superintendent of the Holy Spirit Mission (aka Happy Family Centre), Bishop Charles Ighele, spoke to Adeola Ogunlade on the just concluded Presidential elections, and the way forward for Nigerians.

Before the election, a lot of prophets spoke in support of the different candidates, and one would ask, did they hear from God?

When the issue of a Muslim/Muslim ticket came up, some pastors supported the candidates of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and some were against his candidature. So when the church saw what was going on, some pastors began to speak less of politics.

I will not speak for those prophets. I have my colleagues, the high and the up and coming ones, who did not prophesy, though they have supported their candidates. I don’t want to say things that will further cause a problem. I like people to learn. I have my members across the country, but I did not tell them who to vote for. I told them that they should vote for their conscience. This time, I just sat and looked. I acted like a statesman. I wanted to look at how things would pan out. The church never prophesies about who will become Nigeria’s President.

There are claims that the door to the Aso Villa was closed against the church for two years after the 2015 elections because of the stance of the church in 2015. Can we say Adeboye, Primate, and Archbishops of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Catholic Bishops were not allowed into Aso Rock?

These people had access. The most prominent figure in the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Pastor Enoch Adeboye had access not because Osinbanjo is the Vice President. Femi Adesina, the spokesperson of President Buhari glowingly praised the General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi for not criticizing President Buhari after a visit to the President.

Nigeria has elected its new President, what should be the takeaway?

There is a challenge to the establishment. In the 1979 election when former President Shagari won, the establishment won, and the class and power brokers won. Shagari was not as intelligent as Chief Awolowo, but he was not the candidate for the establishment. Shagari did not perform well, though he won a landslide victory in 1984, he did not perform well, the economy was bad, and the country was largely polarized. The first exodus of Nigerians abroad started about that time. A coup took place that made Buhari the Head of State. The next establishment emerged in 1999 when Former President Obasanjo took over from the Head of State, Abdusalam, and the same establishment-backed Yaradua. Former President Jonathan became President after the Law of Necessity was raised when Yar’adua was ill. The establishment backed Buhari. This is the first time that the establishment has been challenged in Nigeria’s history. Obi got into the prominence he is today because Nigeria had suffered, and they were asking themselves who would deliver them from those milking them dry and taking their paternity. Obi emerged without an organised structure. Who will have thought Labour would clear Delta State? It lacks structure. It surprises me. There is an establishment right now and whoever becomes President should be humble in victory and work for the interest of the common man.

Does the Obedient Movement look more like a rudderless movement that may not stand the test of time considering their performance in the Presidential election?

When you look at the history of revolutions all over the world, they hardly start with a leader, but a people becoming discontent with the system. God sent Moses to deliver the children of Israel after many years of groaning in Egypt. When people are groaning, only a few are organised. In the process, someone will show up, just like in the French revolution. It is not about the man that heads it, but as much as the groaning continues, the movement will continue. The seeming victory of the Labour Party was conceived in the womb of the ENDSAR movement

Social media influencers have continued to latch on to the ENDSARS protest to gain unnecessary popularity, it looks like a fad.

If 133 million Nigerians are multidimensionally poor, it is not social media, it is the reality on the ground. Three years down the line, the government has not done enough to address the grievance of Nigerians. ENDSAR was just a name. I was not part of it but I watched all that happened. I warned in 2020 that the government must do something quickly to address the yearnings of the poor. My memory goes back to 1831 when the monarchy and political elites were maltreating the people and things were tough for the peasant farmers and commoners. The people protested and it became a major issue in English history today. In 1831, N-Teller who led the protest was executed but the monarchs and elites began to introduce new measures to alleviate the difficulties of the poor. Government should mobilise both human and material resources for the development of the country.

What is the way forward for the President-Elect?

A big problem will come up in June, July, and August and it will test the ingenuity of the President-Elect. In this year’s budget, by May petroleum subsidies will cease. Petroleum subsidy is only in the budget until June. I don’t know why the present administration put an end to the subsidy until the expiration of this term. I think the subsidy should have been removed in January or December. That would have been honest. Deliberately or not, it is a big trap that can kill a big rat. I have told my people to wake up because the prices of food items will increase. Diesel was cheaper than petroleum until the subsidy on diesel was removed and the price went up to N800. The price of PMS will reach that level. If nothing is done, the price of things will skyrocket and the people will begin to cry against the new government. Though all parties agreed that subsidy on petroleum should be removed, we must start thinking now on the way forward. We must think beyond palliatives. Thinking about increasing workers’ salaries is not enough to cushion the effect of subsidy removal. The poor are in the millions. Garri, a staple food for the poor, is gradually getting out of the reach of the poor, the challenge is that when the subsidy on PMS is removed, garri will completely be out of the reach of the poor. When Former President Olusegun Obasanjo became President-Elect, he went for a retreat with a different thinking team on how the government would run. The celebration should stop after the March 11 elections, assemble a team now, the problem the president-elect is inheriting is far more than the problem Buhari inherited. The problem can be solved through a higher level of thinking, and great thinkers.

What is the way forward for the church?

The church is expected to support the new government because the Bible enjoined all to do so. When the Muslim/Muslim ticket came up, the church was angry, but the church did not want to cause political tension, so the church became silent.

Was it because there was a change of guard at the national level of CAN?

No, the new President of CAN and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria spoke loudly a few weeks after his election against the Muslim/Muslim ticket, but the Bible teaches us not to do things out of anger but wisdom. National or religious balance goes beyond Muslim votes or Christian votes. We can see that it affected APC votes. There are certain things above religion. Balance the ticket based on geography and under it is religion and not just elevating religion to the top. Though APC did that due to the exigency of the moment, the mistake should be avoided next time.
