Mohbad’s father Aloba denies exploiting son’s death for music career

Joseph Aloba, father of the late artist Mohbad, has responded to criticism over claims that he is using his son’s death to promote his own music career.

In an interview with Silverbird TV, Aloba denied the allegations, explaining that music serves as a therapeutic way to cope with his grief.

Aloba, a gospel singer, revealed that he taught Mohbad how to sing and now finds comfort in performing his late son’s songs.

He clarified that he had been singing long before Mohbad’s death and plans to release another album soon.

Aloba said: “I taught Mohbad how to sing. I’m a gospel singer, and he was a hip-hop artist. After this thing happened, I see his songs as an easier way for me to mourn. I remember him through singing.

“I sing whenever I remember him, but people don’t see it that way. I did a record before his death, but it was not popular, but now people are focusing on me, and they know the kind of thing I’m doing. It is not that I started singing after his death. Very soon another album will be out.”

He noted that while Mohbad had made efforts to reconcile the family during his lifetime, tensions surfaced after his passing.

Recalling a family meeting organized by Mohbad’s attorney, Aloba revealed that tensions escalated when family members convened without waiting for him, as the family head, to arrive.

  • Olulola Odubela: Nigerian Fashion illustrator making waves globally

Olulola Odubela: Nigerian Fashion illustrator making waves globally

A talented 25-year-old fashion illustrator, Olulola Odubela shares her inspiring journey of turning her passion into a successful business in an interview with iGEN NEWS.

Born in Jigawa state to a medical doctor and midwife, Olulola’s creative journey began at age seven with her parents’ encouragement and support while also providing her with ample materials to hone her skills.

Olulola’s fascination with fashion illustration started after watching a Disney Channel commercial, which sparked her interest in drawing dresses.

She developed her skills consistently, and her parents supported her by providing every art material she needed. This early exposure to art laid the foundation for her future career as a fashion illustrator.

She said: “My parents read fairy tales and stories to me everyday so I picked up on reading and visual differentiation at the age of 3.

“I’ve always been drawn towards writing and drawing, I’m thankful my parents noticed early on so they provided me with surplus paper and pencils to keep at it.

“My parents never stopped me from being arty. They provided me with every ridiculous art material I asked for. This privilege helped me grow too. So when I eventually decided to make this a business, my Dad bought me the sturdiest table in the world to tail on.

“Consistency! I kept at it. My skills developed over time, infact I wash them down now because I want my  drawings to look cartoonish. I started with drawing random things then saw this commercial on Disney Channel that asked girls to draw Disney Princess Dresses to stand a chance to win a prize, this sparked my interest in fashion illustration even though I didn’t know that’s what it was called then. I didn’t partake in the competition but I started to draw dresses and even sew clothes for my dolls. I was probably 7 or 8 here”.

As she grew older, Olulola’s passion for fashion illustration only intensified. She pursued higher education, studying Human Anatomy at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) and earning her Master’s degree in Neuroscience from the same institution. Her academic background in anatomy has given her a unique understanding of the human form, which she applies to her fashion illustrations.

Despite her recorded success, Olulola has faced numerous challenges and moments of self-doubt. She shared that she has wanted to quit many times, highlighting the difference between enjoying a hobby and building a lasting brand.

Now a Lagos-based fashion illustrator, Olulola emphasises that creating a brand requires immense hard work and dedication and there have been instances where quitting seemed like the easiest option, but her self-reflection and determination have kept her going.

“I’ve wanted to quit so many times, you see there’s a difference between doing a hobby and building a brand that’ll outlast one. Building the brand is harder work and honestly, quitting has come to mind a number of times but looking at myself in the mirror keeps me going”, she said.

She recognises that setbacks are an inevitable part of the journey to success and that perseverance is key.

Despite facing challenges, Olulola’s self-belief and driving force is her family.

Olulola’s craft is gaining recognition in Nigeria and internationally, with brands from Canada, the UK, USA, Ghana, and Cameroon patronising her services.

Her expertise has led to collaborations with various brands, and she hopes to work with renowned fashion houses like Dior, Chanel, and Valentino in the future.

To expand her business, Olulola has hired a team to manage customer relations and paperwork, allowing her to focus on sketching.

Her ongoing 100-day challenge, which started on January 6, 2025, aims to increase engagement and attract more brand recommendations. Beyond fashion illustration, Olulola is a social media strategist and enjoys reading, watching series, and home decor.

“Expansion has started for me, this year the plan is to push myself through my currently ongoing 100-day challenge which will garner more engagement and in turn brand recommendations and recognition”.

Olulola’s journey is a shining example of how dedication and perseverance can lead to success. She has proven that with hard work and determination, anyone can turn their passion into a fulfilling career. As she continues to grow and expand her business, Olulola remains committed to inspiring others to pursue their dreams, just as she has done.

In addition to her fashion illustration business, Olulola is also passionate about empowering others through her art. She believes that art has the power to bring people together and inspire positive change. Through her work, Olulola aims to make a lasting impact on the fashion industry and beyond.

“You have to understand there’s so much more to it than just drawing and painting. Fashion illustration is people trusting you to take their brand to the next level, they rely on you to determine the style they want to be known for and you have to deliver. Stay consistent too!”.

Speaking of self-doubt, the Fashion enthusiast said she rarely get in that space.

“I hardly doubt myself, in fact I feel I believe in myself more than anyone I know aside from God. Imposter syndrome hardly has a hold on me. I see myself each day and I see someone much greater so doubt rarely hangs around”, she said.

Through her work, Olulola aims to make a lasting impact on the fashion industry and beyond.

Ajayi stated that the killing was not premeditated, but rather a spontaneous reaction to the situation.

He expressed no remorse for his actions, citing the principle of reciprocity in relationships.

He said in an interview: “I killed her because we don’t have each other all the time, it’s not something I planned. It happened on that day and it happened. Not that I have the plan in mind, she was cheating. She hides most of the things from me most time. I got to know from her phone. I saw her chats with other guys on the phone, that was why I decided.

“No. I don’t have any regrets because life is reciprocal, that is what I thought. If you must do something to someone, you have to be reciprocal with that person. You have to understand what that person is going through so that you can actually put yourself in the position that the person is going through, that is why I don’t have any regrets because we were actually compatible.”

  • Spyro, Ubi Franklin bicker over alleged $5,000 fraud

Spyro, Ubi Franklin bicker over alleged $5,000 fraud

Singer Spyro has alleged music executive Ubi Franklin used Davido’s name to scam him.

In an interview on Echoo Room podcast, Spyro claimed Ubi Franklin approached him to perform at an event, claiming Davido had invited him and would get $5,000.

However, Spyro clarified Davido had no knowledge of the arrangement.

He said: “I have an issue with Ubi Franklin. Ubi was one of the people I ‘respected’. Ubi just came down and said David said we should come perform at the birthday party that he was invited to that he was going to give us 5k. I called him to the side and said ‘bro first of all, I don’t charge 5k.’ My Nigerian currency wey I dey charge, the least I would do is N20 million.

“On getting there, David was on stage, he came back from the stage and Ubi just came to me, he said ‘you’re going on the stage now’ before you know it, MC don announce, Spyro! And right after, I said okay Ubi, shebi you don sha make me, I don perform now, where my money wey you say David say him go give us?

“He said ‘no don’t go and buzz David o, he’s not the one actually, let me tell you the truth, he’s not the one that said you guys should come and do the show’. I was like are you kidding me? So David doesn’t even know anything about this, so you just used David’s name, this is broad daylight scam bro!”

But Ubi Franklin denied the allegations, dismissing them as misinformation aimed at damaging his reputation.

He countered Spyro owes him N10.5 million, being 10% of the cost of a car he helped Spyro purchase.

Ubi Franklin demanded that Spyro pays the owed commission and offered to settle the debt by offsetting the $5,000 he’s holding.

He said: “I will not allow anyone to destroy my name. And please, it’s time you all stop trying to use David’s name to make your story sweet or get people to pay attention to your story.

“Why would I tell David’s friend who is a growing artiste that David said when I know you have direct links to him? How does this make sense?

“I don’t even understand this at all and gullible people will believe ( I have never used David to take anything from anyone ) you want to use me to start your PR for the year, it’s not me cos a lot is at stake and I won’t let you do that.

“Pay me my 10% from the car I helped you buy and told you to pay me my 10% you said I should wait till you finish paying. I know you have finished paying since December. Kindly credit me the balance cos I have 5k dollars meant for you and you have N10.5m meant for me. If we do plus and minus, you owe me N2.5million cos 5k Dollars is 8m.”

Cobhams Asuquo reveals early decision to charge in foreign currency

Renowned music producer and songwriter, Cobhams Asuquo, has recounted a career-defining moment when he began charging clients in foreign currency as early as 2005.

Speaking in an interview with Pulse TV, the multi-talented artist revealed that at just 24 years old, he pegged his fees in dollars.

This bold move, he explained, stemmed from his recognition of the value of his craft and a desire for financial stability by transacting in a more reliable currency.

“I am one of the few producers who started charging in a different currency for the purpose of stability.

“As far back as 2005, I began to peg my charges in dollars because I felt it was a stable thing to do. I was obviously getting signed and getting things going, and I needed to be able to transact in that space.”

Cobhams noted that his decision was pioneering, as he was unaware of any other producers charging in dollars at the time.
