  • Observing Religious Tenets through Healthy Sleep in the Period of Ramadan

Observing Religious Tenets through Healthy Sleep in the Period of Ramadan

    By Dr. Usman Abba Ahmed

It is stated in the Quran that Allah says, “O ye who believe, fasting is prescribed for you, even as it was prescribed for those before you, that ye may ward off evil.

Fast a certain number of days, and, for him who is sick among you or on a journey, the same number of other days, and for those who can afford it, there is a ransom, the feeding of a man in need.

But whoso doeth good of his own accord, it is better for him, and that you observe fasting is better for you, if you know – ‘The month of Ramadan in which was revealed in the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the criterion, of right and wrong.

And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month, and whosoever of you that is sick or on a journey, let him fast the same, the number on other days. God desireth for you ease, and not hardship, and that you should complete the period, and magnify God for having guided you, and be thankful. And when My servants question thee concerning Me, surely, I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the supplicant when he crieth unto Me.

So let them hear My call and trust in Me, so that they may be led aright. It is made lawful for you to go in unto your wives on the night of the fast. They are raiment for you and you for them. God is aware that ye were deceiving yourselves in this respect and He hath turned in mercy toward you and relieved you. So, hold intercourse with them and seek that which God hath ordained for you, and eat and drink until the white thread becometh distinct to you from the black thread of the dawn.

Then strictly observe the fast till nightfall, and touch them not when at devotions in the mosques. These are the limits imposed by God, so approach them not. Thus, God explained His revelation to mankind that they may ward off evil.”— Quran 2:183-187.

Fasting has primarily been prescribed to all Muslims as a form of religious obligation for overcoming their lust and desires within a reasonable limit so that one can control oneself and prevent being a slave to the pleasures of life. According to the Qur’an, if humans cannot prevent themselves from desires, they cannot achieve salvation. “As for him who fears to stand before his Lord and restrains himself from low desires, Paradise is surely his abode” — Quran 79: 40-41.

During Ramadan fasting, Muslims’ routine includes rising for the pre-dawn meal (Suhur), dawn (Fajr) prayer, Salatul Tarawih (prayers at night immediately after Isha’s prayers), and midnight prayers (SalatulLayl) during the last ten (10) days of Ramadan.

Several habits and lifestyle changes occur during Ramadan to accommodate these routines. The changes in eating habits and lifestyle modification have been proven to alter the normal human day-night routine and can have harmful effects on sleep patterns and general health.

Certainly, studies have shown that sleep deprivation has adverse harmful effects on how the body functions. Over 1,400 years ago, Islamic literature emphasised the importance of getting enough sleep at night during the Holy month of Ramadan. Several Hadith by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) stressed this point.

One Hadith in Sahih Al-Bukhari (SB) states that the Prophet (PBUH) told one of his companions who was praying the whole night to “Offer prayers and also sleep at night, as your body has a right on you” (SB 1874). Another says, “If anyone of you feels drowsy while praying, he should sleep until his slumber is over” (SB 210).

A third Hadith describes how the Prophet (PBUH) entered the mosque and saw a rope hanging between its two pillars. He said, “What is this rope for?” The people said, “It is for Zainab who, when she feels tired, holds it to keep standing for the prayer.” The Prophet (PBUH) said “Don’t use the rope; remove it. You should pray as long as you feel active, and when you get tired, have some sleep” (SB 1099).

Usually, most people sleep 7 to 9 hours at a stretch during the night, but this might not be possible during Ramadan. Therefore, some practical measures are recommended to ensure quality sleep for successful fasting during Ramadan.

    · It is advised to make up for the lost night-time sleep. This may involve going to bed earlier than normal. For example, try to go to bed by 9-10 pm and sleep 5 hours following Iftar, wake up at 4.00 am for Suhoor and Fajr, and return to sleep at around 6 am for 2 hours.

    · If possible, reduce working hours. If not, a nap after work before Iftar can compensate for the loss of 1-2 hours of sleep.

    · Additionally, this new Ramadan routine might mean sacrificing or reducing time spent socialising or on leisure activities, but necessary for your body.

    · It has been stated in an earlier article that sleep deprivation directly affects hormones that control appetite. Therefore, fasting gets even more difficult with a surge in sleep-deprived appetite. Thus, adequate sleep can make fasting much easier during Ramadan fasting.

For maximum comfort that will give you quality sleep during Ramadan fasting, the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) recommends using MOUKA mattresses, pillows, and beddings.

Dr. Usman Abba Ahmed, (PT), Ph.D., MNSP, is the Vice President, Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy.

  • Minister Musawa’s “partnerships strategy”, economic lifeline for Nigeria’s creative economy, tourism sectors

Minister Musawa’s “partnerships strategy”, economic lifeline for Nigeria’s creative economy, tourism sectors

    By Chindaya Ahmadu

Nigeria’s creative economy and tourism sector are both offering a veritable economic lifeline to Nigerian creatives and upbeat investors, and this is as a result of the policy initiatives and bold reforms of the Honorable Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa.

In alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of building a $1 trillion economy, the Ministry under her leadership has already forged strategic partnerships that will drive growth, enhance cultural diplomacy, and boost GDP contribution from the Ministry to the Nation’s economy.

A landmark achievement recorded by the Ministry recently through a core strategic partnership between the Ministry and the African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim Bank) has led to the $200 million financing facility with the Afrexim Bank which is scheduled to come into full operations by the mid-2025, and is set to provide essential funding for businesses and entrepreneurs in the creative sector. This move ensures that Nigeria’s creatives—ranging from filmmakers to digital innovators—have the capital needed to scale their ventures, create jobs, and expand their global reach.

One of the most impactful initiatives is the Creative Leap Acceleration Programme (CLAP), developed in partnership with Lebara Nigeria. This initiative provides creatives with equitable loans, digital financing, and affordable internet access, ensuring their seamless participation in the digital economy. Additionally, inbound tourists will benefit from streamlined financial services and eSIM activation, enhancing their experience in Nigeria.

To strengthen Nigeria’s creative workforce, FMACTCE has partnered with Alison, a global e-learning provider, integrating its Learning Management System (LMS) into CLAP. This offers creatives access to courses in digital media, gaming, music production, and cinematography, positioning Nigeria as a globally competitive creative hub. Recognizing the need for financial security, the ministry has also joined forces with Prembly to implement advanced Know Your Customer (KYC) verification, Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance, and fraud prevention measures, ensuring financial integrity within the creative sector.

A boost to digital storytelling comes through the Content Creators Challenge, a partnership between FMACTCE and TelAirVision. This initiative provides funding, mentorship, and distribution support for digital creatives transitioning from short-form to full-length productions. By expanding opportunities in the content economy, the program fosters innovation and employment while promoting Nigerian talent on a global stage.

Attracting investment into the creative industry is another key focus. FMACTCE has collaborated with the Presidential Tax Committee to introduce tax incentives and credits, making Nigeria’s creative sector more appealing to foreign investors. On a grassroots level, the ministry is partnering with state governments to establish Renewed Hope Cultural Villages across Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory. These cultural villages will preserve historic sites, promote local festivals, and create employment opportunities, reinforcing economic diversification and tourism development.

Infrastructure investment is also receiving attention through an MoU with Cavista Holdings, which focuses on developing tourism infrastructure, digitizing tourism experiences, and investing in human capital. By strengthening public-private partnerships, this initiative positions Nigeria as a global tourism destination and stimulates job creation in the sector.

Beyond local initiatives, FMACTCE is strengthening international collaborations to elevate Nigeria’s creative and cultural economy through another grand partnership with the British Council, with this milestone partnership agreement focusing on skills development, cultural exchanges, and strengthening the creative sector in Nigeria.

Recognising the importance of global benchmarking, the Ministry has engaged the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to analyse best practices from South Korea, Saudi Arabia, India, Japan, and China. These insights will help Nigeria tailor policies that drive the creative economy’s growth and maximize its GDP contribution.

A strategic agreement with Brazil includes the renovation of Casa da Nigeria in Salvador, fostering co-productions in film and music and promoting cultural exchange. Similarly, a partnership with the French Republic grants Nigerian creatives access to French markets and specialized training in fashion, gaming, and cinema.

To further enhance tourism experiences, FMACTCE’s collaboration with Wakanow will introduce cultural desks at international airports. These will feature live performances, curated exhibitions, and digital travel solutions, enriching visitors’ first impression of Nigeria.

Recognizing the need for skills development, FMACTCE has partnered with Lens For Good to implement capacity-building programs that equip young entrepreneurs with the expertise required to thrive in the creative and tourism industries.

One of the most ambitious undertakings is the Nigeria Destinations 2030 Initiative, designed to create 2 million jobs in Nigeria’s creative economy by 2030.

Financial sustainability is further reinforced through a partnership with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), which aims to securitize both tangible and intangible assets in Nigeria’s creative and cultural economy. By unlocking new revenue streams and attracting private-sector investments, this initiative ensures long-term economic growth in the creative sector.

Highlighting its commitment to global recognition and innovation, FMACTCE has formalized a landmark partnership with Africana Bespoke Tailoring Nigeria Limited. Signed by Minister Hannatu Musa Musawa and Africana’s Managing Director Charles Oronsaye, this collaboration establishes a strategic framework to drive Nigeria’s creative and tourism industries to international prominence.

Through these strategic partnerships, Minister Musawa is taking decisive steps to place Nigeria on the global map, ensuring that the creative and tourism sectors are not just contributors to the economy but key drivers of national prosperity.

The Ministry’s initiatives will not only create jobs and attract investment but also position Nigeria as a cultural powerhouse in the global economy.

  • Exhibitors explore opportunities for manufacturing in Nigeria

Exhibitors explore opportunities for manufacturing in Nigeria

Exhibitors from countries across the globe at the Pharma West Africa Exhibition 2025 in Lagos have called on the Federal Government to grant opportunities to them to set up manufacturing facilities in Nigeria in order to deepen their market penetration in the pharmaceutical/ healthcare sectors.

The exhibitors also called on the Federal Government to remove the hurdles put on the way by some its regulatory agencies in the drug, health, food and beverage value chain to enable them introduce cost effective medicines.

The programme which brought together hundreds of manufacturers, pharmacists ,and other players in the health sector was put together by Trade Show Organisers of Nigeria, an outfit that leverages the power of network , commerce and capacity to offer practical solutions to the challenges of the industry.

Speaking to journalists at the event, Mr. Jamie Hill, the Managing Director of Trade Show Organisers of Nigeria, organisers of the exhibition,, described Nigeria as a good market, saying the intention of the exhibition has always been to bring as many exhibitors as possible from around the globe to connect with local players in the pharmaceutical sector.

He said; “I am very excited at the Pharma West Africa Exhibition.

“We are obviously going to be back here in 2026 and continue with this. We always plan to bring as many companies as possible to meet with local players in the sectors and this is just the seventh edition; it is growing year on year.

“We are going to become the biggest show in the West African region and that is our plan. We have had massive support from our partners and that has made it possible to get to this level, but talking of challenges, we have been able to get over that,” he said.

Meanwhile, some of the exhibitors also spoke to journalists on their impressions at the event.

Mr. Simranjit Singh Gandhi, the founder and director of Aprazer Healthcare Private Limited in India, one of the companies exhibiting at the event, said this was their first time of being at the event, however promised to have a discussion with the Nigerian regulatory agency in order to make available their products in the country.

“This is our first time in Lagos Nigeria and it is great,” he said.

“We have some businesses to seal but we want people to see the big opportunities in this Pharma West Africa because this is a very big event.

“This is a great opportunity because Nigeria is a great market to be honest. We are here to have discussions with NAFDAC, have discussions with business associates so that our products can be available in Nigeria in a legitimate manner.

“We want to be part of the Nigerian market and make sure our products are here to help the country in areas needed,” he said.

Also speaking, Victor Chinedu, the Vice President (Commercial and Branding) PURELIFE HEALTH, whose company came up with a platform to help connect the people with healthcare experts, said the innovation would help to integrate various aspects of primary healthcare, including health and wellness products, vaccinations, diagnostics, specialist consultations, and medication delivery.

He said; “We are utilising technology to address hitherto difficult medical processes. We are serving as a platform for all primary healthcare activities, from medical doctors to diagnostics, to pharmacists and we are making sure that individuals that have access to this app can have access to all these primary healthcare drivers on one platform.

“We are here at Pharma West Africa because it is one of the largest gatherings of pharmaceutical stakeholders and this is a veritable platform to connect with business owners, to companies. We feel that if we want to make it easier for people to access their health, why can’t we create a general platform whereby they would have access to all these things at a go and so this is good because at the comfort of your home, you can list orders. At the comfort of your home, you can see the doctor, run diagnoses and get prescriptions.

“This is because four out of every ten Nigerians do not completely care for their health, so we saw all these loopholes and decided to make healthcare accessibility easy for them by coming up with this,” he said.

On his own, Mr Kausher Nayabali of KNA, a group of companies which is into so many health sectors, said of their mission in Lagos for the Pharma West Africa.

“We are into many sectors like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, FMCG appliances. It is about a 100 years old company. We are in Nigeria for exhibition with our products and we want to offer these products to Nigerian people at an affordable price.

“We are enjoying our presence here and hope to be here for second time. We are looking to discuss with big importers and we can also produce our products right here. Because of logistics, we at times have issues bringing our products here but we can produce them here. We have been dominating the market for the past 15 years and we want to do the same in Nigeria.

“If we have good support from Nigeria, we can do more. Nigeria is one of the strongest economies in Africa with a big population, so we can help Nigerians to get good quality products at reasonable prices.”

    Alerte: transforming emergency response

Founder, Alerte Universal Limited, Mr James Useghan has expressed strong commitment to integrating Alerte app with government agencies and private security firms in the near future. He said his ultimate vision is to position Alerte as a global leader in emergency response technology.

Speaking shortly after the recent launch of the app at Café One in Yaba, Lagos, he said in the next five years, he plans to introduce predictive analytics to preempt emergencies before they escalate, implement multilingual support, and integrate with wearable devices for real-time health monitoring. While Alerte currently operates as an independent emergency response tool, Useghan observed that because technology infrastructure is limited in some regions, his team have implemented strategies to ensure Alerte remains accessible to everyone.

“The app is designed to function efficiently with minimal data usage, making it reliable even in areas with low connectivity. Additionally, community representatives have been deployed to raise awareness and assist users in rural areas,” he added.

Useghan assured that his goal is to create a platform that ensures emergency response is swift, coordinated, and accessible to all. The app, which is much more than just a distress signal, integrates real-time location sharing, AI-driven safety recommendations, and seamless communication with emergency responders to provide users with immediate assistance.

At its core, Alerte is more than just an app, as it is a movement, a lifeline, and a beacon of hope in times of crisis. By leveraging technology, community support, and AI-powered assistance, Useghan is pioneering a new era of emergency response, ensuring that no one feels helpless in an emergency again.

“The app, which is much more than just a distress signal, integrates real-time location sharing, AI-driven safety recommendations, and seamless communication with emergency responders to provide users with immediate assistance,” he added.

For years, Useghan observed the glaring flaws in Nigeria’s emergency response systems. Understanding these challenges, he envisioned a system that would eliminate unnecessary delays by allowing users to alert trusted individuals, first responders, and even nearby community members within seconds. Alerte was designed with this in mind, offering a user-friendly interface that empowers individuals to take control of their safety.

“Alerte operates on a simple yet powerful premise: when users find themselves in distress, they can trigger an alert with a single swipe. The app then shares real-time location data, personal details, and a distress signal with pre-selected emergency contacts. This immediate communication ensures that help is mobilized without the usual bureaucratic delays.

Beyond personal safety, Alerte also fosters a community-based alert network, where nearby users can respond to distress signals, providing an added layer of security. Whether it’s a fire outbreak, a robbery, a car accident, or a missing person case, Alerte ensures that someone is always listening and ready to act.

Another standout feature is its AI-driven assistance, which guides users through emergency protocols in real time. Unlike conventional emergency apps that rely solely on automation, Alerte uses a chatbot that offers step-by-step guidance, helping users make informed decisions during a crisis,” he noted.

According to him, one of the most pressing concerns with any safety technology is privacy, adding that users want to feel secure without compromising their personal information. Understanding this, Useghan ensured that Alerte only shares data with authorized contacts and emergency responders, and only when explicitly permitted by the user. All data is encrypted and erased after the emergency, reinforcing the app’s commitment to security.
