    • Governor died in his sleep in German hospital
    • He was fearless, says Tinubu in tribute
    • Governors, Buhari, senators, APC leaders, Jimoh Ibrahim, NBA, others mourn

A new chapter opened in Ondo State yesterday, following the inauguration of Acting Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa as governor.

He was sworn in by the Chief Judge, Justice Olusegun Odusola, a few hours after the demise of Governor Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu.

Akeredolu died in his sleep in the early house of yesterday at a German hospital, where he was undergoing treatment.

He died 14 days after transmitting a letter to House of Assembly Speaker Olamide Oladiji, ceding power to his deputy, to commence his second medical vacation.

He travelled to Germany first in July for treatment and returned on September 7.

But he stayed at his private residence in Ibadan, from where he conducted the affairs of government.

His absence from the state sparked a web of intrigues, including an attempt by the House of Assembly to remove Aiyedatiwa.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu intervened in the crisis to prevent degeneration.

A statement by the family, which announced his death, signed by the late governor’s son, Oluwarotimi Jnr, said: “He died peacefully, departed in his sleep, at a hospital in Germany, where he was undergoing treatment for protracted prostate cancer.

“While we are deeply saddened and devastated by his departure, we find solace in the understanding that as he transits to eternity, he will be guided by the benevolent hands of the angels of light, with whom he resided during his remarkable and fruitful journey on earth.

“During this challenging time, we sincerely appreciate everyone who has stood by us and extended their support since the news broke.

“We humbly request your prayers and support, while also asking for privacy as we navigate through this trying period.

“Details regarding the burial arrangements will be announced by the family and the state government in due course.”

Another statement by the state government signed by Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, said Akeredolu died peacefully in the early hours of yesterday after he succumbed to complications arising from prostate cancer.

She said: “This tragedy has left behind a profound void in our hearts. Governor Akeredolu answered the eternal call while receiving medical treatment in Germany.

“A letter has been sent to President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, to officially inform His Excellency of this devastating news. The family and the Ondo State Government appreciate Mr. President for his support for Governor Akeredolu during his illness. The family and the state government will release further details regarding the funeral arrangements.

“Governor Akeredolu was an extraordinary leader whose unwavering dedication to the state and its people was both commendable and unparalleled.

“He not only served as the Governor of Ondo State but also emerged as a prominent advocate for the entire Southwest region and the nation.

“Governor Akeredolu was a courageous leader and an exemplar of integrity. The weight of this loss is truly unbearable.

“However, we find solace in the knowledge that Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu lived a purposeful life, devoted to the service of God Almighty.”

    Aiyedatiwa takes office

Aiyedatiwa’s swearing-in was brief. It took place at the Council Chambers of the Alagbaka Government House in Akure, the state capital. It was witnessed by the speaker, chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Ade Adetimehin, and members of the State Executive Council.

The new governor wore a pair of suits with a striped tie to match. His lush grey beard was well-trimmed as he read his inauguration speech.

A motley crowd of supporters at the venue clapped, shouted and booed some of the government officials as they were introduced during the event.

Aiyedatiwa made five appointments shortly after he moved into the Governor’s Office.

Those appointed are Mr. Ebenezer Adeniyan (Chief Press Secretary), Mr. Smart Omodunbi Jnr (Special Assistant on Political Matters), Mr. Abire Sunday Olugbenga (Special Assistant, New Media), Miss Motunrayo Oyedele (Special Assistant, Photography) and Dr. Temitayo Iperepolu Special Assistant (Domestic and Government House).

Before the appointments were announced, three aides of Akeredolu resigned. These are Special Adviser on Union Matters, Dare Aragbaye, Chief Press Secretary Richard Olabode and Special Assistant, Special Duties and Strategy, Dr. Doyin Odebowale.

Aragbaye, a former Head of Service, explained in a statement that he was loyal to Akeredolu, even in death.

The governor declared three days of mourning during which time flags will fly at half mast.

    I will complete projects,

    says Ayedatiwa

Aiyedatiwa pledged to complete projects started by his predecessor.

In his inaugural speech, he said he accepted to take over the reins with a heavy heart, following the death of Akeredolu.

Ayedatiwa said Akeredolu’s demise was a great loss to him as an individual, recalling that their relationship dated back many years.

Paying tribute to him, he said: “He was a man of courage and vision who always stood for the truth, even at his detriment. He pursued the course of Amotekun even when his victory was being contested at the court.

“The people of Ondo and the Southwest will be grateful for the establishment of Amotekun, which had increased security in the state.

“His many legacies in the health sector, infrastructural, industrial hub, his innovation and entrepreneurial agency will be difficult to surpass.”

He added: “The events in the last few days are a watershed in the history of the state. This event has placed a burden on all of us.

“We have the responsibility to continue to sustain Akeredolu’s legacy which was good governance.

“Our leader embarked on landmark projects, many of which had been completed and some are ongoing. I now have the burden to complete them.

“It is necessary for us to acknowledge the achievements of Akeredolu. His records of performance are monumental.

“This administration shall continue to advance the welfare of the people. We shall place the people first in every decision we take.”

Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara State) visited Akeredolu’s family members in Ibadan. He was accompanied by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

After the private visit, during which photographers and reporters were barred, the two governors signed the condolence register and left.

    Buhari mourns

Former President Muhammadu Buhari described Akerdolu as a towering political and legal luminary.

In a statement by his media aide, Garba Shehu, the former President said: “I have lost a valued friend. I pray that his soul finds eternal peace. My thoughts are with the countless people who are inspired by his leadership in law and politics.

“My condolences to his family, the government and people of Ondo State and our party, the APC.”

    • ACF seeks declaration of state of emergency in banditry-prone communities
    • 17 Plateau councils’ chairmen condemn attacks, call for arrest of perpetrators
    • Akpabio, others condole with govt, bereaved families

    From, Abuja,, Jos,

Vice President Kashim Shettima yesterday assured Nigerians that the Bola Tinubu administration will ensure that victims of attacks in Plateau State communities get justice and the residents’ lives and property are safe and secured.

A statement in Abuja by his spokesman Stanley Nkwocha said Shettima gave the assurance when he visited Barkin-Ladi and Bokkos local government areas of Plateau State to condole with the people and government over the killings.

He said: “Now, please, accept our heartfelt condolences. Please, accept our deepest apologies because we won’t rest until you access justice and until you are safe.”

Shettima stressed that the President “is deeply shaken by this tragedy and shares in this unspeakable sorrow that has shattered the joy of Christmas across the country”.

He added: “When one community bleeds, the entire nation feels the pain. The pain we feel now transcends ethnicity or religion, geography or politics. The grief that binds us is a testament to our shared humanity, not differences.”

The Vice President described the attacks as nightmarish, saying it was traumatising to bury family members in such a circumstance.

“We cannot fathom the depth of this grief beyond the experience of the bereaved. We can only offer to assuage your pain. What has happened to you is a funeral for the entire nation. Our hearts bleed alongside yours, our dear brothers and sisters in Bokkos, Barkin-Ladi, and all over Plateau State,” he said.

Shettima assured the people that the Tinubu administration would protect them and ensure justice, though it might appear to some people that the government had failed them in their time of serious need.

The Vice President stressed that justice is the path to collective safety, unity, and healing of the nation.

“We came to power promising to uphold the sanctity of every citizen’s life. Now is the time to reassure you that this inter-community violence, which has hijacked the humanity and serenity of this beautiful state over the past decades, will never persist under our watch.

“We will harness all our resources to bring those responsible to justice. We will not rest until we are able to prevent the recurrence of these heinous acts.

“Your blood, your tears, and your cries stain our collective conscience. We are here for you; we are here, resolute in our commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators of these mindless killings face the full force of the law,” he said.

Also, mouthpiece of Northern Nigeria, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), expressed sadness over the attack on Plateau communities.

The forum urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in banditry-prone communities.

A statement yesterday in Kaduna by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, reads: “The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has been greatly saddened by the attack by terrorising gangs on communities in Plateau State, on December 23, 2023, tragically resulting in the death of over 100 persons with many injured.

“In terms of their gruesome impact on lives and property, the attack adds to sad memories of the bombing incident at Tudun Biri, Kaduna State, and, by rampaging bandits in Zurmi, Zamfara State, both within just weeks apart.

“ACF mourns the dead and commiserates with the injured. The forum condoles with families of the victims and prays to God to grant the deceased eternal rest, as well as to fortify the faith of those left behind so they remain stoic and bear the losses with equanimity.

“ACF equally prays for quick recovery for of the traumatised and injured. Without downplaying worrisome incidents of insecurity elsewhere in the country, ACF wishes to draw attention to how such attacks serve as graphic reminders about the parlous state of security of citizens in Arewa communities and elsewhere in general. ACF reiterates its stance that every such incident is one too many.”

Also, transition committee chairmen in 17 local government areas of Plateau State have condemned the attacks on residents of Bokkos, Mangu, and Barkin-Ladi local government areas of the state.

The local government chairmen, under the aegis of the Association of local government (ALGON), spoke through its Chairman Hamisu Anani, who is also the Chairman of Wase Local Government Area.

They said the renewed attacks across the communities, especially those of Christmas Eve, called for united efforts to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

In statement in Jos, the state capital, ALGON said the coordinated attacks on more than 20 villages led to the death of over 100 persons and displacement of hundreds of others with destruction of properties worth millions of naira.

The association hailed Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his prompt response and repeated calls to security agencies to find a lasting solution to such attacks.

It also hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the Army to secure many parts of the country that were hitherto under severe insecurity.

Also, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has expressed concern over the attack in Plateau State.

He urged the government to move beyond condemnation and implement enhanced security measures.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the eighth National Islamic Vocational Course organised by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium yesterday in Bauchi, the Sultan said there was a need to address the escalating insecurity in the country.

He said: “For some of us who are opportune to serve in the military, we know what the activities of these security agencies are. So, we keep on asking questions about what is really happening. Things are politicized, and that is the worst way to go when you politicise insecurity. We are all in one big country where we have poverty. Yes.

“We always condemn such things, but after condemning such activities by these bandits and criminals, what next? What are the roles of the governments that are supposed to protect lives and property? Why can’t we be proactive and stop such attacks before they happen? What happened to our intelligence-gathering mechanism?

“Let’s wake up. The time for deep slumber is over.”

Also, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Miyetti  Allah, and Ohanaeze Ndigbo have condoled with the government and people of Plateau State over the killing of over 100 persons in about 26 villages.

A condolence message to Governor Caleb Mutfwang by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Eseme Eyiboh, yesterday in Abuja, reads: “My heart bleeds at the barbaric and well-coordinated attacks by supposedly human beings against the hapless and peaceful people of Plateau State. I condole with the governor, Mr. Caleb Mutfwang, the government, and the people of the state over this tragedy.

“I sympathise, particularly with the bereaved families, and I wish those who sustained injuries a quick recovery.

“While I pray God to grant those who lost their lives eternal rest, I implore the security agencies to redouble their efforts in the quest to restore law and order and track down the assailants to face the full weight of the law.”

Amuneke  tips Osimhen, Sarr, others  to shine at AFCON

Erstwhile African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Amuneke  has predicted a tough  Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire , adding  the quality of  talented youngsters  that will be on parade  would certainly light up the continent’s  most  sought-after trophy.

Speaking with Tribalfootball.com,  the  former Barcelona winger and 1994 African Footballer of  the Year,  recalled  his best  years with club and country even as he counselled  Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen following his recent Africa’s Best Player  award.

“Yeah, we have seen already there are some excellent young (African) players who are currently playing in Europe,”  Amuneke noted. “For example, we have a Senegal player called (Pape Matar) Sarr who is playing for Tottenham, there’s (Samuel) Chukwueze at Milan.

“And of course, Osimhen at Napoli. I think in the future we will see new names and new faces.

“The players we have now like Osimhen, Sarr, etc are doing very well and are representing the African nation(continent)  very well.

“He (Osimhen) just needs to stay calm and focused. The good things will come to him,” he added.

Ahead of next month’s AFCON, Amuneke admitted  there may be one or two surprises to come out of the tournament.

He continued: “I think we have young promises that we have been able to develop from youth level. I think this is a positive aspect regarding Nigerian football that we have seen these young players develop from the youngest age through now to playing in the first team.

“But still, we are well aware that football success doesn’t come only from this, but you have to get better also in other aspects. I can say for sure we have a promising young team. But we have to give them and create for them all the opportunities necessary to express themselves as best as they can.

“For some time now we have been introducing a new generation of players and we need to have some patience so they can get better.”

Voted the BBC African Footballer of the Year in 1996 after scoring the match-winning goal that helped Nigeria to win Africa’s soccer gold medal at the Atlanta’96 Olympics, Amuneke reflected on his glorious past.

“I would say the Olympic title and the gold medal that I won with the national team was a moment of pride for me,” Amuneke  further said. “Also winning the African Cup of Nations was very important – but I would stick with the Olympic medal (as my favourite) because it brought a lot of attention to African football.”

On Barcelona days, he said :”Joining Barcelona was like a dream coming true. Every player or young player wants to play for a big team. Nowadays the situation has changed because young players only want to play for a big team but for me, it’s important to play where you can have continuity and grow as a player.

“Of course, still, teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, etc have that appeal where everybody wants to go and play.”

“My experience at Barcelona was good. Coming from Portugal to Spain it was a big step for me, but unfortunately injuries began to happen a lot. When these injuries occur you cannot give 100% as you are not in shape.

“But when this happens you need to be strong and have the confidence in yourself that everything will become better. You must remember this is part of the journey.”

Oshoala, Falcons back Super Eagles for AFCON glory

Ahead of January’s kick off of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the rank and file of the Super Falcons are tipping the Super Eagles to go all way in Cote d’Ivoire.

The Super Eagles are in a tricky Group A along with hosts , Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. Yet Barcelona forward Asisat Oshoala who was recently  crowned women’s Africa Best Player for a record sixth time, said  with the strength in depth of the national team, the Super Eagles remains the team to beat amid different permutations by purists.

“ Of course, talk is cheap but the boys will be separated from the men by the time they get to the competition,” Oshoala said.

“We have the almighty Victor  Osimhen who is the best player in Africa now and we have (Victor)Boniface  doing very well with his club (Leverkusen)

“But generally, I think we have a very good team  and it’s not only about individual talents  and I think we have a good time to build towards the tournament.”

Speaking in the same vein, Super Falcons’ Michelle Alozie,  said the Super Eagles have all it takes to be African champions.

“ I think they ( Super Eagles) have an amazing squad,” the 26-year-old forward told  Brila Fm. “ I hope they will be amazing.”

Yet former national team skipper  Christian Chukwu who incidentally led Nigeria to her first AFCON title on home soil in 1980, has called for caution, adding the goalkeeping department may be  the Super Eagles Achilles heel in Cote d’Ivoire.

“ The problem is that (Jose) Peseiro didn’t do his work very well,” noted Chukwu who  assisted Dutch coach Clemens Westerhof to wrought Nigeria’s second title at Tunisia 2994.

“ If he’d stayed more and watched the Nigerian league , he would have seen a lot of good goalkeepers but I don’t understand him jumping from here to there.”

Djokovic expects  strong Nadal  at Australia Open

World number one Novak Djokovic believes Rafael Nadal will be competitive at next month’s Australian Open, despite his injury absence.

The Spaniard, 37, a 22-time Grand Slam winner, is set to make his comeback in Brisbane this weekend ahead of the first tennis major of the year.

His last match was a second-round loss to American Mackenzie McDonald at the Australian Open in January.

The 2024 edition of that tournament begins on 14 January in Melbourne.

“I always expect him [Nadal] to play at his best, to be honest,” said Djokovic, 36, who won three Grand Slams in 2023 to reach a record 24 for his career and overtake Nadal.

“Many times they’ve signed him out, they’ve done that with me as well. But we’ve proved them wrong.

“He’s not a kind of a player that will come back to the tour just to play – let’s say – on a medium level, play a few matches.

“He wants to win titles, he wants to be the best, that’s why he is who he is: a legend of our sport. I’m sure that his training and preparation is done with an intention to win a Grand Slam.”

Nadal has said that 2024 is likely to be his final season on tour, after needing surgery on a hip injury and slipping down to 670th in the world rankings.

He won the Australian Open in 2009 and 2022 and is a record 14-time champion at the French Open.

World number two Carlos Alcaraz also believes his compatriot is ready for action.

“I saw some videos of him practising, he’s 100%,” said 20-year-old Alcaraz. “I hear from other players that they practised with Rafa in these past weeks and they said that he’s going to return to his good level. His top level.

“I think he’s ready for great things this year as well.”

Moyes’ West Ham lay ambush for  Arsenal

West Ham manager David Moyes said he was “really pleased” by his side’s progress ahead of their trip across London to Premier League title-contenders Arsenal today.

The Hammers are currently just a point off the top six following a 2-0 win at home to Manchester United last weekend.

And the Scot is confident in West Ham’s ability to get better throughout the season.

“We’re really pleased with the progress we’ve made,” Moyes told a pre-match press conference.

“We’ve got 30 points in the league, which is a really good total for us at this time of year. We want to keep it going and we think we can get better and do even more.”

Moyes added striker Michail Antonio will again be absent as he continues his recovery from a knee injury, with centre-back Nayef Aguerd to undergo assessment after missing the United victory because of illness.

West Ham defeated Arsenal 3-1 in the English League Cup last month but Moyes is prepared for a far tougher test today.

”(I’m expecting) huge challenges. Arsenal have always been a really hard team to beat,” he said. We had a good result against them in the cup but this is a different competition.

“The league throws up different players and Arsenal changed their team for the game in the League Cup so they will be back to their full-strength team, I’ve no doubt, and going to the Emirates Stadium has never been an easy game.”

Arsenal will go top of the table if they beat the Hammers and Moyes praised the “brilliant job” done by Gunners counterpart Mikel Arteta.

“I’ve been impressed with Mikel since he first went in,” Moyes said. “He won the FA Cup and the Community Shield, so a couple of wins right at the start.

“Then obviously it went a bit difficult and there was a lot of talk about him, but he hasn’t half proved all those doubters wrong because he’s done a brilliant job with Arsenal. He’s got them incredibly competitive, back around the top of the league and competing again.

“I think most Arsenal supporters will be happy with Mikel.”
