I don’t have anything to do with my father, says Emeka Ike’s son

Emeka Ike‘s eldest son, Michael, has firmly expressed that he has nothing to do with his veteran actor father.

Michael described how the actor was reportedly abuse him in an interview with media personality Chude.

He said: ”He asked whether she wanted to kill my brothers so that it would appear that only he was living. Allow him to commit suicide.

“Everyone should just kill themselves. Who says they can kill themselves to their children?

“He said he has other kids my age around the world. I was like is that supposed to faze me?

“The next morning, I got a 10-minute voice note from him. This is not the first time. He is always sending me VNs insulting my life ‘You are doing music; you will never prosper. I will see you on the side of the road and I will spit on you. Don Jazzy will never see you.’

It started making me get scared that I am going to have issues like this when I grow up?”

When asked what he wants his dad to do or stop doing, Michael said: ‘’Nothing. I don’t want anything from him. Reacting to comments that his mum might have turned him against his father, Michael said: ‘’When I met my mum for the first time, the first thing I said was I really hate my father.”

  • Tinubu assures Nigerians of new dawn

Tinubu assures Nigerians of new dawn

A new dawn of prosperity is here, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday assured Nigerians.

He urged them to rekindle hope in his administration’s commitment to greater public welfare.

The President led other political leaders to felicitate Nigerians on the occasion of Christmas.

In his first Christmas message to Nigerians, President Tinubu implored Nigerians to maintain their fidelity to their fatherland.

He said his government will continue to intervene and mitigate public suffering through palliatives while intensifying work on full economic recovery.

Also, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of love, peace and harmony.

As many Nigerians are in joyful mood today, no fewer than 50,000 troops are celebrating Christmas at the frontline away from their families in service to fatherland, Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja said.

Urging Nigerians not to despair, President Tinubu, in a statement, said: “Be confident that by the strength of our joint endeavour, we will shortly emerge into a new dawn of prosperity,  peace, and irreversible progress.

“Christmas is a special time of the year for all of us. For  Christians, this time of the year marks the birth of Jesus  Christ and celebrates the hope and redemption that are the hallmarks of Christ’s life.

“For people of all faiths, this is an opportunity to enjoy the company of family, celebrate life, and delight in the gifts of love and friendship that make life worthwhile.

“This is also a time to look out for each other because,  amidst the festivities, this time of year for many will be tinged with sadness: some mourning the loss of loved ones and others grieving the hopes that failed to materialise and the dreams that fell short.

“In the spirit of Christmas, reflecting the best of Christ, let us all endeavour to extend the warm embrace of kindness to those around us who need it and let the multiple acts of kindness serve as a light that guides us into a happy and wonderful new year.

“This year has been a time of transformation and relentless change in our country. And I am aware that the necessary reforms we are implementing to achieve a more prosperous, peaceful nation for all have imposed unique sacrifices.

“My administration will continue to implement palliative measures to ease the burden on the most vulnerable,  address current hardships and alleviate the suffering of all our nation’s people.

“Fellow Nigerians, as we navigate this transition to stability, prosperity, and Renewed Hope, I urge you once more to hold fast and rest assured of my commitment to govern with vision, dedication, and empathy.

“Be confident that by the strength of our joint endeavour, we will shortly emerge into a new dawn of prosperity,  peace, and irreversible progress.

“As you celebrate this season, please spare a moment of remembrance and prayer for the men and women of our nation’s armed forces, bearing arms in our names and ensuring our safety. May God protect them and bring them back to their families.

“And let us together commemorate the memory of those who, in their service, have paid the highest price for our nation. May God bless their souls and comfort their families and loved ones.

“Let the light of Christmas guide our paths as we bring this year to a close and usher in the new year.”

    Akpabio to Nigerians: be steadfast

Senate President Akpabio enjoined Nigerians to remain steadfast and hopeful, despite the hard times.

He noted their pains, which he attributed to the removal of petroleum subsidy, assuring that the gains will manifest in the not distant future.

He said: “Our today’s pain will surely produce joyful gains in a very short time.”

Akpabio, in a Christmas message by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, admonished the Christian faithful “to pray, fast and be hopeful because with the birth of Jesus Christ, who is our symbol of hope, love and redemption, Nigeria will also overcome its current challenges”.

    Abbas: pray for leaders

House of Representatives Speaker Abbas called for prayers for the success of the Tinubu administration, urging Nigerians to also support other political, spiritual and traditional leaders in the journey for a safe and prosperous country.

Abbas, in his Christmas message to Christians, said Nigerians should emulate the virtues of Jesus Christ, including love, sacrifice, peace making, tolerance, building consensus among the people, and selflessness.

He urged Nigerians to reflect on the current situation of the country as they celebrate Christmas, with the hope of a greater future.

Abbas added: “Let us use this occasion to ponder on the issues affecting our daily lives as a nation and how we can best address them, both as leaders and followers, the government and the governed.

“As a people, we have come a long way. Therefore, we should continue to unite and remain one. Let’s continue to pray and support our leaders. Let’s emulate the life of Jesus Christ and imbibe his teachings, which were about love and sacrifice.”

Police rescue four missing children, arrest abductors in Abia

The Abia Police Command on Sunday says it has rescued all the four missing children allegedly stolen in Umuahia.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Maureen Chinaka, disclosed this in a statement to newsmen on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that one of the mothers had earlier reported the alleged abduction by an unidentified tenant to the police on December 16.

The children belonging to three different parents were identified as Joy Udoma (Female – three years), Ogbonna Udoma(Male – six years), Chioma Kingsley (Female – five years) and Miracle Ikechukwu (Female – five years).

However, Chinaka stated that two of the children were rescued on  December 22, while another two were rescued on Sunday.

She said that the police successfully apprehended one Ifeoma Abonyi, a 35-year-old female in Asaba, Delta State, who had been  identified as the hitherto unknown tenant responsible for the abduction of the four children.

The PPRO revealed that a total of eight suspects, including five females and three males were currently helping with the investigation into the crime.

According to her, three other persons suspected to be complicit in the crime are still at large.

“We are intensifying efforts to ensure their arrest soonest.

“Meanwhile, investigation is ongoing to determine the real status of six other children that were found in the custody of the arrested suspects.

“This might entail the conduct of DNA tests, as some of the suspects are claiming that the children are their biological offspring,” she stated.

Chinaka assured that the outcome of the investigation would be made open as soon as possible. (NAN)

  • Emefiele, Mustapha, TIG tackle CBN investigator

Emefiele, Mustapha, TIG tackle CBN investigator

Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele yesterday denied opening 593 foreign accounts during his tenure.

He said the fixed deposits in the foreign accounts were outside his knowledge.

According to him, the relevant departments of the CBN had the authority to open such accounts.

Emefiele also said he got approval from ex-President Muhammadu Buhari last year to redesign some Naira denominations.

He said he handed over the same approval to the Special Investigator into CBN activities, Jim Obazee, appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

On the withdrawal of $ 6.3 million from the CBN vault, the former CBN Governor said he did not know of such a directive from the former president and the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha.

He accused Obazee of hatching a satanic agenda against him.

Also, the former SGF asked the Federal Government to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the $6.3milion scandal.

Also yesterday, the Tropical General Investment Group (TGI) said it did not acquire the Union Bank of Nigeria as a proxy for Emefiele.

It faulted “the assumptions” by Obazee which linked Emefiele to the ownership of Titan Trust and Union Banks.

The knocks and protests followed the scooping of some snippets from the “Report of the Special Investigation on Central Bank of Nigeria and Related Entities.”

Obazee, the Special Investigator on CBN and Related Entities, was appointed in July. He submitted an Interim Report on December 9.

It was learnt that the final report on the CBN probe was submitted to the President on December 20.

While some aspects of the report were in the public domain, Emefiele was battling to fulfil his bail conditions from the Kuje Correctional Centre in the Federal Capital Territory(FCT).

But barely 48 hours after his release, the ex-CBN Governor kicked against some of the findings of the Special Investigator, who he accused of a satanic agenda.

Emefiele, who broke his silence in a statement on some of the allegations against him, said he was prepared to clear his name.

His statement reads: “After my release on bail from the correctional centre, Kuje, my attention was drawn to publications released by some mainstream and online news platforms.

“The sources of the information published by both media houses were credited to a certain report prepared by Mr. Obazee, who was appointed by the President as a private investigator.

“I have gone through the publications, and I say boldly that the contents of the said publications are false, misleading and calculated to disparage my person, injure my character and serve the selfish interest of the private investigator.

“Because of my present situation, I have been advised by my lawyers not to say anything in respect of the matters which have been submitted to the court for adjudication.

“However, I need to address some of the issues raised in the publication which are barefaced lies told by the investigator in order to achieve his satanic agenda.

“First, it was reported that contrary to the provision of the CBN Act 2007, there was no presidential approval for the Naira redesign.

“I wish to state unequivocally that there was indeed a presidential approval, and the said approval was handed over to the same Jim Obazee during the process of his investigation in the presence of senior CBN officials and his own investigative team.

“Moreover, the former President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR has stated on a number of occasions that he authorized and approved the Naira redesign.

“I am, therefore, at a loss as to why Mr. Obazee will mislead Nigerians that there was no presidential approval.”

On the withdrawal of $6.3million, Emefiele said he did not know of such a directive from the former president and the ex-SGF

He added: “The report also claimed that the sum of $6.23 million was withdrawn from the CBN vault based on a false presidential directive bearing the signature of the former President Buhari, and that of the former SGF, Mr. Boss Mustapha.

“About two weeks ago, Obazee in the company of a certain Deputy Commissioner of Police from Force CID came to Kuje to ask me questions in respect of the said document in the presence of my lawyers.

“I stated verbally and in writing that I have no knowledge of such directive from the former president and the former SGF.

“In fact, I told them that that was the first time I would be seeing the documents. On this, I challenge Obazee to publish the said documents and also the statements that I made to them.”

Regarding the opening of 593 foreign accounts, Emefiele said he was not involved.

He said the fixed deposits in those foreign accounts were outside his knowledge.

He said: “The final issue that I would like to respond to is the issue of the 593 accounts which were purportedly opened in different parts of the world.

“I state categorically that I am not involved in the opening of these accounts and I do not have knowledge of their openings.

“The fixed deposits in those foreign accounts are definitely outside my knowledge.

“However, let me state clearly, that the relevant departments of the CBN have the authority to carry out such activities in line with their lawful mandate within the CBN.

“I, therefore, join well-meaning Nigerians who have spoken on this matter and have demanded a thorough and transparent investigation of all these alleged frauds.

“Meanwhile, I have instructed my lawyers to immediately commence the legal process to clear my name from the defamatory statements contained in the report and by extension the publications.”

    Boss Mustapha denies involvement

Toeing the same line, the immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, denied involvement in the alleged illegal withdrawal of $6.3 million from the CBN during Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

In a statement in Abuja, Mustapha described the allegation as “outrageous and unsubstantiated.”

He also said he did not know of the purported “Presidential Directive” for the withdrawal of the cash.

He said he was never involved in discussions or transactions related to any payments for foreign election observers.

He asked for a thorough and transparent investigation into the matter.

Mustapha said: “The article hinges on the dubious premise of forged documents and a misleading narrative.

“It claims that $6.3 million was withdrawn from the CBN vaults based on a purported ‘Presidential Directive’ bearing the signature of President Buhari.

“This document, unsurprisingly, has not been presented for public scrutiny. In fact, I have no knowledge of such a directive, nor was I ever involved in any discussions or transactions regarding the alleged payment to foreign election observers.

“I demand a thorough and transparent investigation into this matter. Let the relevant authorities probe the source of these fabricated documents and expose those responsible for this malicious attempt to damage my reputation. I have nothing to hide and welcome any legitimate investigation that sheds light on the truth.

“Throughout my career in public service, I have always upheld the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct.

“I have served with dedication and transparency, and my record speaks for itself. I will not allow this baseless and defamatory attack to go unchallenged. I will defend my reputation vigorously and ensure that the truth prevails.

“This is not just about me; it is about upholding the integrity of public service and safeguarding the reputation of those who have served this country with honour.

“I trust that the Nigerian people will see through this orchestrated attack and recognize it for what it truly is: a desperate attempt to silence a voice of reason and integrity.”

    TGI faults report

Another knock against the probe report came from the Tropical General Investment Group (TGI) which bought the Union Bank of Nigeria.

The company said it did not acquire the Union Bank of Nigeria as a proxy for Emefiele.

It said the USD500 million capital used to pay for the transaction was transparent and unimpeachable.

TGI said it has been doing business in Nigeria for 45 years.

It said Union Bank was not owned by the government and no government money (CBN or AMCON) was used to buy it.

It said the entire transaction was managed by highly reputed global financial institutions including Rothschild and Citibank.

It said with about 20,000 workers and over N3.75trilllion in assets, its annual revenues as of 2022 stood at over N1.74 trillion.

It said its owner, Mr. Cornelius Vink, has been doing business in Nigeria since 1978 and was never a proxy to anyone or group.

TGI said it was part of Mr. President’s private sector delegation during his visit to Germany where the group signed a USD500 million contract for renewable energy in Nigeria.

The group made the clarifications in a statement by its Head of Corporate Communications, Ms. Rafiat Gawat

The statement said: “Our attention has been drawn to media reports emanating from purported documents allegedly submitted to the President by the Special Investigator probing the activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria, where he linked our ownership of Titan Trust and Union Banks to former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

“We want to categorically state that some of the assumptions made in the purported document were incorrect, thereby resulting in a conclusion that may not necessarily reflect the actual reality.

“The true facts of the case are as follows: Tropical General Investment Group (TGI) is the majority owner of Titan Trust and Union Banks.

“We have been doing business in Nigeria for close to 45 years and have evolved into one of the largest companies in West Africa.

“Today, TGI employs over 20,000 people spread through the length and breadth of Nigeria. We have over N3.75trilllion in assets and as of 2022, our annual revenues stood at over N1.74 trillion.

“Our companies and entities are exemplary corporate citizens of Nigeria and pay over N50 billion annually in taxes to the government.

“The acquisition of Union Bank by Titan Trust Bank followed all the laid down rules and regulations.

“The approximately USD500 million capital used to pay for the transaction was transparent and unimpeachable.”

TGI explained what transpired between it and Obazee.

The statement said: “This clearly illustrates our credentials as a leading private sector partner to the Nigerian government.

“The investigator’s claim that Union Bank did not respond to his request for information was misleading as all the information requested was submitted on the 1st of September 2023.

“It’s a well-known fact that Mr. Vink, who has been in Nigeria since 1978, is an elderly person and has recently been medically advised to limit his movements. This was duly communicated to the investigator with supporting documents.

“TGI’s capital, ownership and selling of Chi to a multinational such as Coca-Cola are proof that Mr. Vink is not a proxy.

“The Group’s ability to engage and work with reputable international financial advisors and bankers attests to the Group’s global credibility.

“Union Bank was not owned by the government and no government money (CBN or AMCON) was used to buy it. The process was diligently followed as captured in the report of the investigator.

“As responsible corporate citizens, we are always willing, ready, and able to support stakeholders including regulators to learn and understand our Group and its operations.”

The group, which gave insights into how the Union Bank was acquired, clarified that it was not a shelf company.

TGI said apart from operating in 13 countries, it has been in partnership with Lagos, Ogun, Kebbi and Jigawa states.

The statement added: “The entire transaction was managed by highly reputed global financial institutions including Rothschild and Citibank.

“And like most major acquisitions, the process took years to complete.

“A USD 300 million loan was sourced from African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim) and the rest of the capital was sourced from the proceeds of TGI’s sales of its Chi Ltd business to Coca-Cola, all to finance the acquisition of Union Bank.

“The purported investigation report recommended that the Federal Government should take over the banks.

“Such declarations based on incorrect assumptions portray Nigeria negatively, especially when the President is tirelessly seeking and courting foreign investments into the country.

“TGI operates in 13 countries, including Nigeria, India, Morocco, Germany and the United Arab Emirates in agribusiness, industrial chemicals, real estate development and financial services.

“The opening of our USD75 million dairy factory in Dubai in November 2023 is further testimony to our international status and proof of our presence in the country, contrary to the alleged claim by the purported report.

“TGI’s commitment to Nigeria’s economic development and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda is evident in our activities across the country.

“We are a partner with the Lagos State government on the 32 metric-tonne Imota Rice Mill in Ikorodu and was also the sole supplier of paddy rice to the Lagos-Kebbi Lake Rice project.

“TGI also partners with Edo State Government to run their fertilizer blending plant, where we are the only producers of the chemical blend of NPK fertiliser that millions of Nigerian farmers use every season.

“Additionally, we have state-of-the-art rice Mills and Sesame factories in Kebbi and Jigawa states; foods and agrochemical production lines in Ogun and Lagos, and recently, signed a N50 billion financing agreement to support agricultural initiatives in Niger state which is projected to provide tens of thousands of jobs to the locals and improve food security in the country.

“Only last month, TGI was part of Mr. President’s private sector delegation during his visit to Germany (November 2023) and where Union Bank signed a USD500 million contract for the development of renewable energy projects with German DWS entities.”

  • NPAN announces new cover price for newspapers

NPAN announces new cover price for newspapers

Newspapers cover price will rise from next week, Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) has said.

The association hinged the decision to raise the cover price on high production costs and the prevailing economic situation.

NPAN’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Feyi Smith, noted that inflation and the devaluation of the naira had had negative impact on members’ production costs and profit margins.

In a statement, Smith said that member newspapers retained the current cover prices for over four years, despite inflation doubling within the same period.

The statement reads: “With effect from January 2, 2024, members of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN), will effect changes in the cover prices of their newspaper titles.

“Our association took this difficult decision after a careful review of the current economic situation and our members’ production costs.

“In the last few years, inflation and the devaluation of the naira have had very serious negative effects on our members’ production costs and eaten deeply into their profit margins.

“Nevertheless, our members retained the current cover prices for over four years, while inflation more than doubled within the same period.

“We acknowledge that the negative effects of the tough economic climate are felt by our readers. It is for this reason that publishers have borne the brunt of high production costs for the last four years without adjusting cover prices.

“We hope that this price increase would meet with the understanding of our readers even as we continue to do our best to take advantage of technology and better collaboration amongst publishers to improve the quality of our products.”

  • Be patient with Tinubu, economy will be better, says Abia governor

Be patient with Tinubu, economy will be better, says Abia governor

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has urged Nigerians to exercise patience with the economic policies initiated by President Bola Tinubu, expressing optimism that “positive changes are on the horizon”.

Speaking in Lagos yesterday after paying a Christmas homage to the President, Otti confirmed that the present administration inherited a challenging economic landscape.

He highlighted issues such as surging inflation, a substantial debt profile and high unemployment that Tinubu faced on taking office.

The governor said: “Tinubu came in at a difficult time when inflation was close to 30 per cent, the national debt almost $40 billion, and unemployment close to 33.3 per cent.

“The President has been very courageous, unifying the exchange rate and removing fuel subsidy which had become a scam and costing the nation a lot of money.

The governor said that the positive aspects of these policies would soon transform into the reduction of poverty among the over 60 per cent of the population.

Otti said: “Those policies are good but they come with their negative sides. They come with challenges for an economy where over 60 per cent of the population live below the poverty line.

“So, it’s not going to be easy immediately but I believe that if we are patient and if we go through the policies without compromising, over time, things will turn around.”

Otti also commended Tinubu for authorising the commencement of reconstruction work on the failed portion of the Port Harcourt–Enugu Expressway.

He reported progress in the reconstruction and expressed confidence that the road would soon be opened for road users, significantly reducing travel time from Port Harcourt to Aba.

The governor said: “Our partnership with the Federal Government to bring development to the people is at different levels, including through the National Economic Council and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

“After elections, politics takes the back seat, and governance takes pre-eminence. All we are doing is for the interest of Nigerians, and the federal government is also supporting us.”

  • I discussed my 7-point agenda with Tinubu, says Soyinka

I discussed my 7-point agenda with Tinubu, says Soyinka

Nobel laureate Prof Wole Soyinka visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday and discussed a seven-point agenda of his expectations with him.

Soyinka also said he had refrained from criticising the government because it is too early to do so.

He spoke to reporters after his visit to the President at his private residence in Lagos.

Soyinka said: “My first visit, actually it was an embarrassing visit because when I visited him the last time, it was to try and persuade him not to run for office.

“I think I’ve written about that. I told Atiku and himself that they should please leave the ground for young people. That was the last time we met, about five years ago.

“I call him, secretly, Olorikunkun (a stubborn man). So, he ignored my advice completely.

Read Also: Rivers crisis: appreciate Tinubu for intervening  – Wike

“So, I came to see how’s doing after neglecting my advice, I wanted to see if both he and his wife were weathering Nigeria as well as can be expected and to wish them happy Christmas. You know we’re friends, as you know, very well, and it was as a friend that I told him don’t run, leave this thing alone, but he ignored me.

“So, I have this personal policy, whether it’s Obasanjo o, Buhari o, or Jonathan, you will notice that during the first year, I hardly say anything, then people will ask me why are you not talking and I will tell them, go and ask the last person whether I spoke during the first year. So, I’m adopting the same principle. At the end of one year, ask me this question.”

Asked what he would like to see the Tinubu administration achieve, he said “that’s very simple. I came here with a seven-point agenda and we had a very thorough discussion on those items”.

The Nation’s awards result from enterprise, dedication to craft, says Dare

Professor of Journalism, Emeritus, Olatunji Dare, has urged The Nation to maintain the qualities that saw it shine at the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) and the Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA), two of the foremost media rating institutions in Nigeria.

The Nation was named Newspaper of the Year at the 32nd edition of DAME for the third time in four years.

This newspaper won it in 2020 and 2022 and was the runner-up for the category in 2021.

The editor, Adeniyi Adesina, won the Editor of the Year prize, also for the third time in four years.

At the NMMA, The Nation won the highest number of awards at the 31st edition with 15 individual honours – six more than the rest.

In a letter to Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief Victor Ifijeh, Dr Dare, who is this newspaper’s editorial adviser, wrote: “As adjudged by its professional peers and contemporary experts, The Nation should by rights be stepping into the New Year with measured confidence and optimism – measured because of the intensely competitive nature of the industry.

“Several weeks ago, it won the most trophies at the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence, including Newspaper of the Year and Editor of the Year, the latter for the second year running.

“Last week, at the NMMA outing, a parallel platform conferring recognition on outstanding media fare, it won the most trophies in fields ranging from editorial cartoons to entertainment reporting, picking up along the way prizes for editorial writing, business reporting, and environmental writing. Where it did not win outright, it was adjudged runner-up.

“Over the years, those who have followed this newsletter congratulating the management, editorial leadership and staffers of The Nation on one winning streak after another may have come to regard writing it as a routine. It is nothing of the sort.

“Each cycle presents its own challenges, not the least of which is rejoicing without preening, and without lulling the establishment into complacency.

“Winning has not been a routine at The Nation. It has resulted, I am in a position to assert, from hard, sustained imaginative thinking, enterprise, judgment, dedication to craft and conscience, adherence to and constant self-examination, and adherence to the best practices.

“The Nation must never compromise these means and goals.

“Congratulations again to the management and editorial leadership of the paper, to staffers who have won prizes time and again, to first-time prize-winners, and to those who were nominated for prizes.

“For us, the coming year should be one of renewal.”

House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu has said the conferment of Igbo traditional titles on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima will reinforce national cohesion and integration.

Congratulating the President and the Vice President on the conferment of Igbo chieftaincy titles Eze Udo of Igbo Land (King of Peace in Igbo Land) and Enyi Ndigbo (A Friend of Igbo people) on them, Kalu expressed confidence that the honour would lead to the much-desired peace in the Southeast.

Ganduje was conferred with the title of Agunechemba I of Ndigbo (the Lion that protects Igbo people).

President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima were honoured with the chieftaincy titles at the 32nd Ukpo Ofala celebration of His Royal Highness, Igwe Dr. Robert Chukwudilim Eze (Okofia VI), the Igwe Ukpo and Clan Head of Dunuokofia Ancient Kingdom in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Shettima represented President Tinubu at the event.

Kalu, who was among the dignitaries at the ceremony, expressed his delight on the development.

Others included Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma; the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje; and the Chief Executive Officer of Atlas Oranto Petroleum, Prince Arthur Eze.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu noted that the traditional titles were significant in Igbo tradition.

The Deputy Speaker hailed President Tinubu’s administration for giving the Igbo a sense of belonging through his appointments, saying the development would reinforce national cohesion and integration.

He also expressed joy that the traditional titles were coming on the heels of a new peace initiative, called Peace in South East Project (PISE-P), birthed to resolve the security challenges, among other sociological issues in the region, through non-kinetic approaches and restore peace.

Kalu expressed optimism that the Southeast would receive unprecedented attention from the present APC government.

He urged the people to embrace peace and remain steadfast.

Shettima said the Tinubu administration understood the challenges of Ndi Igbo and would work assiduously to address them.

“With our leaders, like Senator Hope Uzodinma, Senator Dave Umahi, and Ben Kalu, the process of integrating Ndi Igbo into the mainstream of Nigerian politics has commenced. Senator Ifeanyi Uba has just joined APC.

“Wherever you go in this country, if you do not see an Igbo man, you better run away from that place. Why won’t I identify with you? Rest assured that Ndi Igbo are the heartbeat of the Nigerian nation. We will work assiduously to see that Ndi Igbo are well represented,” the VP said.

The Ofala Festival was organised and sponsored by billionaire oil magnate, Prince Arthur Eze.

Igwe Robert Eze said Ganduje was honoured with the traditional title as one of the leading detribalised politicians in Nigeria.

The monarch narrated how the APC national chairman protected the Ndigbo while he was governor of Kano State.

Other dignitaries at the event were Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun; APC Vice Chairman (Southeast), Dr. Ijeomah Arodiogbu, and the party’s Deputy Publicity Secretary, Duro Meseko, among others.
