Tension hits Kano as APC, NNPP’s supporters await Supreme Court judgment

There is palpable tension in Kano state as people are divided ahead of the Supreme Court judgment in the governorship tussle between the the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

The polity is heating up daily. The legal battle is between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the (NNPP) and the APC candidate, Dr. Nasiru Gawuna.

Yusuf, with his supporters, and Gawuna, with his, are keen to make history in the court. Some supporters have gone spiritual over to guber battle.

Yusuf, along with his backers, and Gawuna, with his own supporters, are eager to create a historic moment in the courtroom.

It was gathered that some supporters have turned to spiritual practices in the gubernatorial battle.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Yusuf as the winner of the March 18 poll. But Gawuna and the APC petitioned the poll outcome.

No fewer than nine appeals and counter-appeals have been thrown up since Gawuna lit legal fire.

A five-member panel of the apex court, presided over by Justice John Okoro, reserved judgment after hearing at the weekend.

The court said its decision in the appeal heard was to be applied to others because the issues are similar. After lawyers in the case adopted their written briefs and made the final submissions, Justice Okoro said the judgment had been reserved till a date to be communicated to parties.

Yusuf is by his appeal, seeking to upturn the November 17 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the September 20 decision of the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal nullifying his victory in the March 18 poll.

But lawyer to the APC and its candidate in the election, Nasir Gawuna, Chief Akin Olujinmi (SAN), is urging the court to dismiss the appeal and affirm the concurrent findings of the two courts below.

Olujinmi cited Section 42 of Electoral Act and Regulation 19 of INEC Electoral Guidelines, arguing that INEC ought to have stamped, dated, and signed the ballots that were being disputed.

He faulted Olanipekun’s claim that only 1,886 votes were not signed and stamped by INEC.

The APC lawyer cited Section 177 (c) of the Constitution, arguing that the Court of Appeal has the jurisdiction to hear and determine Yusuf’s membership of the NNPP.

He recalled that the NNPP produced its membership register but Yusuf’s name was conspicuously absent, adding that Yusuf did not address the court on that issue.

The appeal lapses on January 14, 2024 and the Supreme Court must deliver judgment on the suit within the statutory 60 days it has to determine appeals on governorship election disputes.

The tribunal had voided Yusuf’s victory after declaring 165,616 of his votes were invalid, a decision the three-member panel of the Court of Appeal that sat in Abuja affirmed.

The police are saving the day. Political hoodlums plotting to take advantage of the legal battle and cause mayhem are being neutralised by the police and other sister security agencies.

A joint security operatives, including Army, Police, Civil Defence, vigilante and other security personnel have been manning major locations in the state capital to ensure no riot breaks out.

According to the Police Commissioner in Kano state, Hussaini Gumel, in the week foiled an attempt by some persons to burn the Government House and the APC secretariat in the state.

Dr Ilyasu Musa Kwankwaso, an ex-Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, has asked the NNPP to “stop wasting Kano’s meagre resources and wait for the Supreme Court judgment.

He accused Governor Yusuf of bankrolling “stage-managed protests designed to create tension in the state and make it look like all is not well.”

  • Shock as 21-year-old undergraduate commits suicide over failed relationship

Shock as 21-year-old undergraduate commits suicide over failed relationship

LINUS OOTA reports the sad tale of a university student who allegedly took her own life in Nasarawa State because she was jilted by her lover.

It all came like a bolt from the blue. Not even the closest confidant of Miss Sarah Maikefi thought she could end her own life in such a sudden and gruesome manner at her young age. But that was exactly what the 100 level student of Microbiology at Nasarawa State University did in reaction to a failed relationship.

For years, her parents reveled in her academic progress, holding her up as their source of pride as they plotted her path to a sustainable future. But Sara kept her unwholesome plans to her chest until she took the plunge after her second semester examination on December 8.

She left no space for her rescue as she bid the world farewell in the tragic event that occurred at an off campus lodge near Family and Friends Hotel, opposite the university campus.

Sarah, the last born in a family of four children, who until her death looked hale and hearty, waited to round off her second semester exams before retiring quietly into her apartment and bolting the door after the merry-making that followed the students’ completion of their first year. She then took a keg containing a poisonous substance suspected to be an agrochemical and gulped its contents.

Students and neighbours were said to have made efforts to lessen the impact of the poisonous substance by forcing some palm oil down her throat but it was too late.

Sara’s cousin, Miss Patience Maikefi, who is also a student of the school, said the deceased had called her on the phone after completing her semester examinations on Friday afternoon, saying that she was tired of everything and could not bear it any longer.

She recalled that the deceased ended the call abruptly following which she made several attempts to call her back but she did not respond, only for a roommate of the deceased student to call her later to meet them at the school clinic.

Patience, who spoke amid tears, said on reaching the university clinic, she was informed that her cousin had died from the consumption of a poisonous substance suspected to be either sniper or agrochemical.

One of the students, who gave his name as Danjuma, told our correspondent that “we met here early this year when she came for her four-year degree programme and we shared a good relationship as students. She was gentle, calm and cool.

“We used to see her with a young man who was coming here regularly. They were usually in loved-up scenarios and appeared to have bonded.

“In fact, they showed every sign of two people who were truly in love. But a few weeks before the second semester examination, we were no longer seeing the guy around her and she was showing signs of someone who was worried.

“We tried to find out what was wrong with her but she kept everything to herself and managed to do the second semester examination.

“She was actually not looking happy or excited throughout the period of the examination.

“We became suspicious when she entered her room after her last paper and did not come out for a long time. We knocked on her door but there was no response.

“Initially, we felt she might have slept off as a result of fatigue from the hectic nights of the exam period. But when she still did not come out after a while, we forced her door open only to discover that she had consumed a chemical and her condition was so bad.”

“We quickly found the means to rush her to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead on arrival.”

Danjuma said the late Sarah actually showed some signs of depression, but she did not leave any suicide note to explaining the reason for her action.

He said: “She did not drop any written note. Neither did she talk to anybody on the reason for her action before she passed on.

“While we were taking her to the hospital, we asked her to tell us the reason for her action but she did not respond. It was obvious that the non-appearance of the guy around the girl took her happiness away.”

A close friend of the late Sarah, who pleaded anonymity, said she had earlier called to inform her that she had completed her last semester examinations and needed to take a little rest before going to Akwanga.

She noted that a few hours after their telephone conversation, she did not respond to her calls or return them until he was later informed that Sarah had committed suicide.

She added that Sarah had been suffering from depression following alleged betrayer by her boyfriend and she had contemplated suicide on several occasions.

“She told me that the guy she held close to heart cheated on her and abandoned her while she loved him with all her heart. She said she did not want to live anymore, and that killing herself would be the ultimate solution.

“I kept telling her never to harm herself because of someone else, and that I had also felt that way before but had to control my emotions.

“I told her that there is no situation that is more important than your life. Consider yourself wounded and allow a healing process to occur.

“I know it is very painful. What the guy did to her was wrong, but the only way to it is through it. You can’t escape pain, but you can make something beautiful from it.

“Surround yourself with people who genuinely care for you and lean on them. It is okay to be hurt sometimes, and pains only make us grow.

“Just remember that every heart break will lead you to the right person. That was my advice to the late Sarah.”

The late Sarah was buried a few days ago in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The Nasarawa State Police Command said it had commenced investigation into the alleged suicide by the 100-level Microbiology student.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, said the personnel of the Angwan Lambu Police Division in Keffi had been deployed to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the said suicide.

When our correspondent visited Sarah’s family house in Akwanga, none of the family members present was willing to talk about the sad end of their daughter.

The former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, was released on the night of Friday, December 22, by the authorities of the Nigeria Correctional Service, FCT, Abuja command after meeting his bail conditions.

However, The Nation gathered that security agencies are said to be watching over his movements.

Sources at the Nigeria Immigration Service told our correspondent that federal government asked the Service to carry watch over Emefiele’s movements in and out of the country.

The source said there are weighty allegations against Emefiele, and security forces would not allow him sneak out of the country.

“I can confirm to you that he (Emefiele) has met his bail conditions, hence he has no reason to remain in our facility.

“He met his bail condition and was released past 2pm yesterday (Friday),” Duza said.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, had granted N300m bail to Emefiele, who is being prosecuted for alleged procurement fraud.

Justice Hamza Muazu granted the bail with two sureties in like sum.

The judge said the sureties must have certificates of occupancy and titles of properties within the Maitama District of Abuja.

  • Intrigues over death of Abuja spa owner

Intrigues over death of Abuja spa owner

It is not easy to reconcile perceptions of a lively, bubbly and happy young businesswoman with that of a decomposing body being packed out of her flat in a bodybag. Business success, beauty, class and connections suddenly became a dark story echoing death and the cutting short of a truly promising life.

The question that continues to linger in the minds of many is who or what killed posh Abuja beauty and owner of Fecit Luxury Spa, Miss Fecit Faith Banfa? Some people in the neighbourhood think that Banfa, who was in her late twenties may have been ‘used’ by a big man. Did she die of natural or unnatural causes or was she physically harmed or poisoned as some now speculate?

She shares similar names with Faith Banfa, a Ghanaian-American actress, writer, and producer best known for her roles as “Aisha” in the Netflix original series “Dear White People” and as “Simone” in the BET+ original series “First Wives Club”.

A former state governor and a former minister were among VIPs said to be on her clientele list and photographs that she posted on one of her Instagram handles, Fecitb21, includes poses in a private jet. She was a ‘happening’ lady with many followers online and in real life. Not seeing her usual posts on social media, lack of response to both calls and text messages all activated a few friends’ move to convince her landlord to break into her apartment. They got welcomed by the putrid smell of her decaying body.  The suspense over her death has defied solution.

Police in Abuja feel concerned too and while speculations mount over whether Fecit was stabbed, poisoned or committed suicide, the sudden death has attracted much public attention and become one of the priority investigations going on. The shocking incident swiftly drew the attention of law enforcement in Abuja, prompting a transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID). FCT Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adah, confirmed the transfer, emphasising the intensive ongoing investigation into the perplexing demise of the vibrant and socially active Fecit.

“Yes, the case has been transferred from Garki Division to CID, investigation is going on,” Josephine Adah, Public Relations Officer at the FCT Police headquarters told The Nation. The mystery death of bubbling Fecit, a Plateau indigene who graduated from the University of Jos became a priority for police detectives who are now working to crack the mystery.

FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adah explained further: “ On 09/12/2023 at about 10pm, following a distress report from one Ahmed Muhammed at Garki Police Station, Police operatives proceeded to the residence of one Fecit Banfa, a female tenant of the above mentioned, who had locked herself in her room.

“Upon reaching the deceased’s apartment with some of her family members, her door was forcibly opened and her decomposed body was found; due to the decomposing state of the body, staff of Asokoro hospital were invited to convey the body to the mortuary and the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja for further Investigation,” she said.

With a very posh spa at Akure Street in a nice part of Garki within the central area of Abuja, and a boutique selling high-end bags, shoes and other items along with being regularly seen in designer clothes and accessories, many easily assume that such a person must be one of those highly-connected and rich Abuja elites who seemingly have nothing to worry about.

Despite consistent efforts by the Police and other security agencies, audacious criminals and crooks from all parts of the country seem to continue streaming in, to try out some of their nefarious ways in the Federal Capital Territory. Police investigation is expected to illuminate the circumstances under which Miss Banfa died.

Resolving the untimely death of Faith Fecit Banfa may be one more emphatic effort towards further reassuring citizens in Abuja and the Nigeria Police appears focused on getting to the root of mysteries like this.

EPL: Richarlison scores again as Spurs move into top four

Tottenham Hotspur moved into the Premier League top four after beating Everton in a thrilling encounter.

Richarlison opened the scoring against his former club with his fourth goal in three matches, before Son Heung-min doubled Spurs’ advantage soon after.

Everton deservedly pulled a goal back through Andre Gomes, in his first Premier League game since May 2022.

But Spurs move above Manchester City – absent from league action due to the Club World Cup – into fourth.

Defeat for Everton ended a four-match winning run and leaves then just four points above the relegation zone.

Brazilian Richarlison put the hosts ahead after just nine minutes, slotting in Brennan Johnson’s low cross at the near post.

Son doubled Spurs’ advantage soon after, with Johnson again providing a key supporting role. The Wales international picked the ball up from a short corner and fired in a powerful drive which Everton keeper Jordan Pickford palmed away.

It fell to Son, who slid the ball home with Pickford caught in a crowd of players and unable to intervene.

Everton showed plenty of attacking intent in an entertaining match, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored five minutes after half-time – only for the video assistant referee to disallow the goal following a foul by Gomes on Emerson Royal in the build-up.

Gomes, who spent last season on loan at Lille before suffering a calf injury, made some amends with a fine volleyed strike on 82 minutes to set up a grandstand finish, but Spurs held on.

Natasha lauds FG for disbursing N50bn to PHCs

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has lauded ongoing efforts by federal government to disburse N50 billion to Primary Healthcare Centres in the first quarter of 2024.

Akpoti-Uduagan gave the commendation in a statement by her Chief Press Secretary, Arogbonlo Israel, in Abuja.

Recall Senator Natasha has been vocal in advocating for an improved primary healthcare system in the country, especially in the rural areas where there are more women that are vulnerable to child mortality.

Last month, the lawmaker lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, during an interactive session by the Senate Committee on Health with the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, supported plans by the federal government to ensure that some of the dilapidated PHCs in the country are resuscitated, as well as increasing their numbers, and focusing on child maternal care.

During plenary, she highlighted the urgent need to enhance primary healthcare facilities in Kogi Central.

She promised to work closely with the ministry to ensure the success of revamping the primary healthcare sector in the country.

In latest development, the Health Minister said the federal government is set to expand the primary healthcare centres from 8,000 to 17,000 facilities to enroll more vulnerable Nigerians for enhanced access to quality healthcare services.

He further noted the funds already accrued in the Basic Health Provision Fund (BHCPF), would be channeled through state PHC facilities to provide essential services to women and children.

“We expect that to be disbursed through the State’s primary health care facilities to deliver services to women and children.

“That is part of the target that Mr President has set for us so that we can expand the facilities over the next four years from 8,000 to almost 17,000 healthcare centers but also to enroll more vulnerable Nigerians to have access to quality healthcare services,” the minister disclosed.

  • Appeal Court upholds Taraba reps member Useni’s election

Appeal Court upholds Taraba reps member Useni’s election

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja FCT on Saturday, December 23, dismissed the appeal by Rimamde Shawulu of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) challenging the election of Hon. Mark Useni of the All Progressives Congress (APC

The court said Shawulu’s appeal lacked merit.

Mark Useni, the member representing Takum/Ussa/Donga Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, described his victory at the Court of Appeal as one that would “spur” him to do more for his constituency and the country.

The National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Jalingo, had in October affirmed the election of Useni, after Istifanus Gbana of the PDP and Rimam Shawulu of the NNPP challenged his victory.

The petitioners had approached the tribunal on grounds of non-compliance to the electoral act in the constituency rerun election.

Both parties sought for the nullification of the election over non-compliance with the electoral law by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

They also said Useni did not acquire the lawful number of votes to be declared as the winner of the election.

The former Speaker of  the Taraba State House of Assembly, who was exhilarated after watching the judgement virtually in his Jalingo home, admitted that he had to endure the distraction brought to him as a result of the legal tussle.

Useni disclosed: “You will recall that I had been in court right from the primary election beginning from the Federal High Court to the Court of Appeal and it ended at the Supreme Court and I got judgement at the Supreme Court just 28 days to the election. Then I went to the election.

“Soon after the election, there was a supplementary election which I won again. And at the tribunal three cases were filed against my election. The tribunal affirmed my case. One of the candidates, Rimam Shawulu filed a case against me at the appeal court and today the court affirmed my election.

“One other thing the court of appeal established today was that supplementary election cannot be held twice. That was one of the issues that Shawulu canvassed for. So the court said clearly that the supplementary election comes only once.

“It is remedial election. It is not an entirely new process. The court therefore dismissed his appeal and agreed with my lawyers on the two grounds of preliminary objections that were filed.

“I am very happy that the judiciary has once again proven to be the last hope of the common Nigerian. And to me I have been spurred to do more. I am six months in the House of Representatives and so far by the grace of God I have been doing my job very well despite the distraction that has been caused by this legal process.”

Nigeria signs Global Act for use of Sixth Generation Technology (6G)

For Nigeria to be part of the Global Community to enjoy and deploy the Sixth Generation Technology (6G) and other facilities associated with Radio and Telecommunications, the country has signed the Final Act of WRC-23 (World Radiocommunications Conference 2023).

The Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani signed on behalf of Nigeria after the World Radiocommunications Conference (WRC) 2023.

The Act constitutes a record of the landmark decisions taken at the conference.

It comprised both the new and revised provisions of the Radio Regulations, an international treaty governing the use of the radio-frequency spectrum and satellite orbits.

Others who attended the conference were the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida and the Managing Director of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NigComSat Ltd), Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen.

The WRC-2023 is a global, inter-governmental treaty conference is held every three to four years by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations-affiliated international organization for telecommunications.

At the end of each conference, countries signed an updated Final Act, the outcome of agreements on agendas put forward by country administrations, said Mr Reuben Muoka, the Public Affairs Director of the NCC.

Muoka quoted the ITU as saying that, “the agreement to the updated Radio Regulations identifies new spectrum resources to support technological innovation, deepen global connectivity, increase access to and equitable use of space-based radio resources, and enhance safety at sea, in the air, and on land.”

He said: “Among the decisions reached, the Conference also identified spectrum for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), which will be crucial for expanding broadband connectivity and developing IMT mobile services, also known as 4G, 5G and, in the future, 6G.

“The conference also identified new frequencies for non-geostationary fixed-satellite service Earth Stations in Motion (ESIMs) that would provide high-speed broadband onboard aircraft, vessels, trains, and vehicles. These satellite services are also critical following disasters where local communication infrastructure is damaged or destroyed.

“Provisions were also included to protect ship and aircraft mobile service stations located in international airspace and waters from other stations within national territories.

“Nigeria’s delegation at the conference comprised seasoned engineers and experts in telecommunications and satellite regulations and governance from the Ministry, NCC, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), NigComSat Ltd, National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), telecom operators and other practitioners from the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, Tijani, who led the Nigerian delegation at the WRC-23, thanked the delegation for their sacrifices which, he noted, were made for the collective benefit of the future of Nigeria.

He also enjoined the Nigerian delegation to commence preparation for future conferences to ensure the preservation of the country’s interest by developing capacity through investments in extensive research and inter-agency collaboration.

Also, during an engagement with the Nigerian delegation at the conference, Maida commended the delegation for collaborating towards Nigeria’s best interest. He emphasised the conference’s significant importance for Nigeria.

According to him, “The agreements reached at this year’s conference will provide valuable spectrum resources that will benefit the Commission’s stakeholders, especially ordinary Nigerians by enhancing service quality and bridging the digital gap in rural areas.

“Additionally, the establishment of international standards for radiocommunications and the decisions made at the conference will impact the development and implementation of new technologies.

“These outcomes align with Nigeria’s overall objectives and the Honorable Minister’s Strategic Plan for the Ministry particularly on expanding broadband connectivity, in harmony with the global transition to 5G and future 6G technologies, as well as improving quality of experience and providing equitable access to all Nigerians.”
