Fed govt will ensure standard working environment for workers, says minister

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha has said that the federal government is focused on standardising the nation’s work environment for improved safe and healthy workplaces, and higher productivity.

She stated this while inspecting ongoing work at the Headquarters of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in Abuja.

The project, which has reached 70 percent, will be delivered before the first quarter of next year.

The minister said the ministry would increase efforts in ensuring that factories and other workplaces comply with regulations and the minimum international best practices for the health and safety of the nation’s workforce.

Onyejeocha said in this new focus, the ministry would incorporate the labour unions to be part of their factory inspections team to ensure that all work environments at factories meet the required standards and comply with laws and regulations.

In a statement by the Director, Press and Public Relations of the ministry, Olajide Oshundun on Saturday, the minister said in compliance with regulations, factories must be registered, their licenses renewed, and their facilities and environments subjected to inspections for the protection of the employees and the public.

Onyejeocha stated that the ministry would also reposition its skills development function along with identified skills needs for both literate and non-literate beneficiaries, aimed at making them active contributors to national productivity and wealth creation.

She said: “This is about helping Nigerians get out of poverty. The human being is part of the infrastructure. Once you get it right on your workforce; get it right on employment, then the nation is on the right path.”

She remarked that contrary to popular belief, the ministry’s mandate does not revolve around dispute resolution, as its responsibilities also include skill development and employment generation, as well as registration, inspection, and renewal of licences of factories.

Onyejeocha stated that the NDE headquarters, when completed, would give its workforce an environment conducive to quality work and increased productivity.

The Minister commended the company handling the project, M/s Skaldon International Limited, on its professionalism and quality of work and urged them on the real-time delivery of the project, which is targeted for the 1st quarter of 2024.

Director-General, NDE, Abubakar Fikpo, appreciated the commitment of the federal government to providing a more convenient location for the headquarters of the agency.

Fikpo: “We are hoping that maybe before the first quarter of 2024 work on this project would have been completed.”

  • Yuletide: Excitement, commendations trail Tinubu’s transport subsidy

Yuletide: Excitement, commendations trail Tinubu’s transport subsidy

Nigerians from all walks of life are thrilled by the Presidential intervention mitigating the high cost of transport this festive season.

Cross-country travelling to see loved ones at the end of the year has been the norm for Nigerians, for decades, irrespective of religious inclinations. Therefore, the far-reaching effect of discounted inter-state bus fares and free train rides on the citizenry, cannot be overemphasised.

In announcing the federal government’s gesture last Wednesday, the chairman of the Yuletide transport subsidy inter-ministerial committee and minister of solid minerals development, Dr. Dele Alake revealed that from 21st December 2023 to 4th January 2024, Nigerians will enjoy a 50% discount inter-state bus transport along 22 major routes, while the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) will be offering free train rides within the same period, in what is now widely acclaimed as a novel, pro-masses initiative by any Federal Government in Nigeria’s history.

With a target of lifting 5 million commuters this season, the government is partnering with major transport companies like God is Good (GIG) Motors, Chisco Transport, Young Shall Grow, God Bless Ezenwata and Area Motor.

Given high demand across the country, the routes have since been scaled up from 22 to 28 while citizens travelling from Lagos – Nigeria’s commercial hub, to other states like Akure and Ilorin via minibuses from the Oshodi bus interchange, are also beneficiaries.

It will be recalled that the attendant effect of fuel subsidy removal has led to skyrocketing transport fares which has necessitated palliatives from the government to cushion its effect. Feedback from citizens across the country has indicated that this transport subsidy has the most significant impact, thus far.

Deborah, at the God is Good Motors (GIGM) Park in Ajah Lagos, captured the mood of passengers across the country.

She said: “I’m travelling from Ajah here in Lagos. I’m going to Benin and I just received my 50% discount palliative from the Federal Government (displaying her receipt), and I’m so excited. Thank you so much, Mr. President! Ebele, travelling from Mararaba, Abuja aboard the GIGM bus to Edo state captured his excitement thus, “It’s a good feeling. I got a refund of 50% of my fares. I had paid N36,800 initially but I got half of that back. This is a real palliative and I’m grateful to President Bola Tinubu.

Another commuter, Lucky travelling from Mararaba, Abuja to Owerri, Imo State had this to say, “The original fare was N32,300 but on getting here, they said the President has given us a 50% discount and they refunded it back to me. I just received my own alert. Long live the President, Long live Nigeria!

Impact stories also abound from train commuters along the Lagos-Ibadan and Abuja-Kaduna routes. A Twitter user @ayotem4real had tweeted, “Just got two free train tickets (Lagos – Ibadan) for my son and mum. En route to the Babatunde Fashola station. Thank you, Mr. President”. A passenger aboard the Idu train station in Abuja to Kaduna revealed that “For those who have validated their names, it’s a smooth ride from the Idu train station in Abuja”.

Another elderly commuter aboard the Idu train station to Kaduna showered encomiums on the President.

“Thank God, the President has offered this free ride to us from Abuja to Kaduna and for others across the country. The President is now trying but some are trying to sabotage the system. They will not succeed. My prayer is that Nigeria will be better. When the government is making efforts, it shall affect all Nigerians and I say thanks to the government. They should keep it up.”

In just 48 hours since the commencement of the subsidised transport scheme, the implementation has been impressive across the country, it will only get better as the days progress. It should also be noted that after the holidays, Nigerians can take advantage of the discounted rates to return to their respective bases, on or before 4th January 2024.

With this palliative that is touching lives, down to the grassroots, it is apparent that President Tinubu is deeply committed to the welfare of the people and working round the clock for their shared prosperity. An apt message can be deduced from this intervention – enjoy your holidays!

  • Onjeh decries NASS Benue APC stance on Gov Alia, sues for peace

Onjeh decries NASS Benue APC stance on Gov Alia, sues for peace

The All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 senatorial candidate for Benue South and former Chairman, Governing Board of the Projects Development Institute (PRODA), Enugu, Comrade Daniel Onjeh, has expressed disappointment with the stance of the Benue APC National Assembly Caucus on Governor Hyacinth Alia.

The caucus presented its resolutions at a briefing recently.

But in a statement, Onjeh described the resolution as hasty and vindictive and the allegations against Governor Alia baseless.

Onjeh reminded the NASS APC caucus Alia had barely spent six months in office and had been running the state on his predecessor’s budget.

He also pointed out the Governor, whom economic and financial expedience and propriety had compelled to drive Ortom’s policies to conclusion, has just presented his first budget to the Benue Assembly, which holds great promise for the development of the State.

“As representatives of the people, it would be honourable on the part of the NASS caucus to question the previous administration’s plunder of the state’s resources without commensurate development, rather than throwing vitriolic remarks at the current administration,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh added that one of the allegations leveled against Governor Alia in the caucus’s press conference rested on the Governor not picking the national legislators’ calls, a matter which he believes, resides in the realm of personal grievance.

He added that instead of sulking over inane issues, the legislators should commend Alia for delivering good governance and democracy dividends to the Benue people thus far.

He drew the attention of the caucus to the fact that in economics, there exists a time lag between policy formulation and implementation.

Onjeh stressed on the need to allow Governor Alia concentrate his laudable programmes.

He urged the NASS caucus to focus on the issues that matter such as the backlog of unpaid salaries and pension arrears left by the previous administration of Samuel Ortom, which Governor Alia is now forced to resolve and is currently doing so commendably.

He added that it was too early in the day to judge the Governor’s performance and it would be more productive to give him time to deliver on his promises.

Alia, Onjeh argued did not unlawfully dissolve LGA councils and sack their elected officials as the caucus alleged.

Rather, he said the LGA officials were suspended on the strength of the allegations of financial impropriety, misappropriation and mismanagement leveled against them.

This, according to him, was done after the due process of passing the allegations through the Benue Assembly and obtaining the House’s full ascent.

Onjeh urged the public to be wary of the information that the governor’s political traducers broadcast, in order not to be misinformed on important matters regarding the state.

“We cannot all be satisfied at all times in the political space. If you sought any favour from the governor and he was unable to attend to you, perhaps subsequent opportunities would arise in which you will be accommodated. Besides, the governor is also learning on the political side,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh further opined that the allegations the caucus leveled against Governor Alia were orchestrated, and part of a grand conspiracy to discredit his fledgling administration.

He added: “It is unthinkable and unheard of, that members of our party will join an opposition party to attack and discredit the governor, who is an APC member.”

According to Onjeh, despite, the unwholesome attacks on Governor Alia by the federal legislators, the Governor’s Approval Rating continues to soar.

“Fr. Alia has lived up to his campaign promises and has so far paid Benue State’s workers their dues and entitlements. Retirees in the state are receiving their pension, and the state’s teeming civil servants are receiving their salaries up to date, as and at when due,” Onjeh stated.

He urged the citizens and residents of Benue State to work together to ensure that Governor Alia’s administration (and by implication, the state) succeeds.

“No government would like to be berated over nonpayment of workers salaries and pensions. If it is that easy to pay salaries and pensions to Benue State workers and retirees, previous administrations would have done that to gain commendation from the people, but they all failed,” Onjeh stated.

Onjeh called on the NASS Benue APC caucus to desist from its unwholesome villainisation of their Governor and  concentrate on their jobs of legislation, oversight, and appropriation at the national level.

Regarding the call by the caucus on President Tinubu to intervene in the matter, Onjeh described it as highly unnecessary.

He advised the caucus to repose confidence in the leadership of the SGF, Sen. Dr. George Akume, who had piloted the affairs of the APC in Benue State from its inception to resolve the issue amicably and expeditiously.

Onjeh sued for peace and urged the Benue APC National Assembly Caucus to sheath its sword and come to the table for a truce, so that the party in Benue State can forge ahead as one big happy family.

  • The many silver linings of Tinubu’s 7 months in office by Bayo Onanuga

The many silver linings of Tinubu’s 7 months in office by Bayo Onanuga

The removal of fuel subsidy and the move to merge foreign exchange rates, two headline reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration since late May, triggered problems such as high fuel prices and the depreciation of the Naira, two monstrosities which combined to cause a general spike in costs of services and goods.

Today, many Nigerians complain of a rise in the cost of living.

According to the latest NBS report, Nigeria’s inflation, which rose to 26.7 percent in September, again rose to 28.2% in November from 27.33% in October. Food Inflation remains untamed, rising from 31.52% in October to 32.84% in November 2023.

To compound the economic problems, a few multinational companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, Procter & Gamble have announced their exit from our country, complaining about the difficult operating environment and the scarcity of dollar.

The truth is that the new policies alone are not solely responsible for the economic problems we are facing today. We were destined for the tough and rough patch, where we are today because of the prevailing conditions before Tinubu took over on 29 May.

As at June 2023, the budget deficit was N10.8 trillion. Actual Debt service was 98.95 percent of revenue, far higher than the projected 59.37 percent.  Inflow into the country’s foreign reserve came in trickles. And so bad was the state of affairs that Nigeria could not remit about $800 million fund of foreign airlines. JP Morgan exposed our near insolvency by claiming in a report that our net foreign reserve was just about $3.7 billion, not the $33 billion-plus flaunted by Emefiele’s CBN.

President Tinubu, who promised during the campaign to take hard and difficult decisions, moved to tackle the economic problems from Day One, by first dispensing with the wasteful fuel subsidy that was billed to consume about N7trillion this year, five times more than what was provisioned for capital spending.

President Tinubu is quite aware of the side effects of his move to reset our economy. Though his administration has earned plaudits from the World Bank, the IMF and rating agencies such as Moody’s and Fitch, he is not carried away by the praises.

He is focused on turning the economy around for growth, development and prosperity.

The moves are yielding some good effects. Amidst what some sections of the media perceive as general gloom, some silver linings are emerging, signposting that with a little more patience, our material conditions will improve and inflation will be tamed. For businesses, operating conditions will also improve.

In its third-quarter report for the year, the NBS reported that GDP grew by 2.54 percent. In a similar period in 2022, GDP recorded a growth of 2.25%. To demonstrate that the sun may be shining on us again, the 2.54% GDP growth recorded in Q3, was also higher than the 2.51% recorded in Q2.

The service sector, made up of information and communication, financial, and insurance, was responsible for the growth witnessed in Q3. It had a 3.99% growth, contributing 52.7% of the aggregate GDP. The agriculture sector declined from 1.34% growth in Q2 to 1.3 percent in Q3.

Growth was also recorded in construction and real estate, metal ores (69.76%), coal mining (58.03%), chemical and pharmaceutical products (6.77%), Cement (4.2%), and construction (3.89%). Oil reported a negative growth of 0.85%, a major improvement from the negative 22.67% recorded at the same period last year. It was -13.43 in Q2 of 2022.

The improvement in the oil sector and its contribution to GDP has been attributed to the improvement in the security of oil infrastructure and operations, leading to increased production. Going forward in this Q4 and 2024, NNPC Limited is confident that the sector will continue to climb the curve.

In the same Q3, according to NBS, the Industrial sector grew by 0.46%, an uptick compared with Q3 2022, when it had a negative 8% growth, even in the era of P&G and GSK exit.

An interesting revelation in the NBS Q3 report was the big jump in the volume of trade, from N12.16 trillion in Q2 to N18.8 trillion. Trade volume in the same period in 2022 was N12.28 trillion. We also recorded a trade surplus of N1.89 trillion in Q3, an increase from the N708.8 billion in Q2 2023. In Q3 in 2022, we recorded a trade deficit of N409.39 billion.

The value of exports in the third quarter was N10.35 trillion, far higher by 60.78 percent than the N6.44 trillion posted in Q2 2023. Crude oil dominated the export, accounting for 82.5 percent, a confirmation that our country is pumping out more oil for export, unlike the previous years.

Just as our exports increased, imports also increased, rising from N5.73 trillion in Q2 2023 to N8.46 trillion in Q3, a rise of 60.8 percent. The imports recorded in the quarter were also higher in value compared to Q3 2022, which was N6.34 trillion.

As the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu noted in a recent report, economic prosperity in our country will be achieved with the reforms being implemented, supported by strong monetary and fiscal policies, food supply management, and other intervention programmes.

President Tinubu who has never shied away from acknowledging the temporary pains triggered by the reforms, gave an assurance in a recent newspaper interview that his Administration will continue to take proactive measures to wrestle with the problems.

Many of these measures are already being taken and in the New Year, we expect the silver linings that are at present understated, to blossom into rays of sunshine to be experienced by all Nigerians.
