Tacha will be a Nigerian export by 2022, says show promoter

    By Gbenga Bada

A United Kingdom based show promoter, Olamide  Baron, has predicted that BBNaija star, Tacha, will be a Nigerian export by 2022.

Baron said further thàt despite Tacha’s unceremonious ouster from season four of the Big Brother Naija, she has become the most popular ex-housemate from the Season.

The Chief Executive Officer of Baron Inc Entertainment further noted that instead of going into obscurity, Tacha has become a popular figure on the Nigerian entertainment scene with a huge community of followers, known as “Tacha Titans”.

Also armed with an ever-growing fan base running through all demographics, Tacha was also described as unstoppable by Baron saying she’s an entrepreneur and brand influencer with a touch of gold.

“She’s sold out every merchandise and products she has made as an entrepreneur which of course made huge companies believe associating with her will be a boost in production and company profile,” Baron said in a recent interview.

“Tacha has a great personality, fantastic team, loyal and vibrant fan base and an amazing brand management team. These indeed are basics to a successful company.

Tacha is my client and I have predicted she will come off flying and hit the ground running after the reality TV show,” he added.

According to him, “Earlier in March my management company, Baron Inc. Entertainment UK organised a UK Tour and UAE Tour for Tacha and the response was so great.

In fact we had bookings from people who liked to meet Tacha like we were advertising a singer. We sold out tickets very fast.

Though we had some people asking us what talent we are selling about Tacha or what exactly was she coming to the UK to do but that question was short lived because Tacha has a loving and commanding personality that is very sellable.

“Though the Coronavirus Pandemic affected the tour, and on arriving in the UAE and the UK we were unable to proceed with the tour but we have made plans to have the tour again when everything gets back to Normal.

I urge huge brands to buy, endorse and associate with Tacha as soon as possible because she might be unaffordable in the nearest future because Tacha is simply unstoppable.”

“I forgot to mention, I am a proud Titan,” he quipped.

Wednesday night saw former housemates of the Big Brother Naija Pepper Dem edition thrash out an issue that happened in the hotel between Mercy Akide (Tacha) and Chinonso Opara (Kim Oprah).

Kim Oprah accused Tacha of “trying to intimidate and bully” her as there was an incident where Tacha came at her in the hotel, recording and saying that her confidence got her a car, and Kim should produce her own.

In her words “I don’t understand why you would come at me, bully me intimidating me and recording me at the same time after the show”

Tacha denied it saying “I don’t know what you are talking about. I cannot remember anything that happed that day”, but housemates, Esther, Omashola and the winner of the show, Mercy, spoke on the incident, all giving similar accounts of Tacha recording and intimidating Kim Oprah.

Mercy apologized to Kim Oprah for denying that she has not seen the incident, but she said “I am not going to bring it out, but I have the video” Omashola explained that Tacha should understand that this is a re-union show where all issues should be resolved and they grow

Frodd and Esther had their time to talk on their relationships, where Esther was disappointed with the perception Frodd created about her as someone that did not like him and was always angry and did not let the relationship work. Frodd spoke, saying he wants her to flaunt him, even if on national television, as proof that she loves him.

Venita, speaking on their relationship said “it is repairable. You just need to be on the same level and have the same energy towards each other.”

Ebuka-Obi Uchendu advised them to sit down and talk, and there will be a solution to their flawed relationship.

  • LILLIAN AFEGBAI: I was naive as Big Brother housemate

LILLIAN AFEGBAI: I was naive as Big Brother housemate

Lillian Afegbai is an actress, producer and ex Big Brother Africa housemate. In this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde, she opens up on her experience in the sector, inspiration, turning point as well as running a Lingerie business brand.

WHAT are you working on at the moment?

Right now, I am working on a lot of projects but considering the pandemic that is happening this year, there is a limit to what we can do. I am working on a couple of movies and some other projects which I am yet to unveil. But pretty soon, everything would come to limelight.

How has COVID-19 affected some of your plans?

Though the pandemic has really affected me in terms of the things that I wanted to do. I had my movie premier, private screening for my new film titled, “Double strings’ that was meant for release just before coronavirus started. Everything now is on hold because we couldn’t do all of those. And we obviously cannot do any of that anytime soon. So, we just have to find other ways, other means of releasing it. Also, I was working on a production that I had to hold which is gradually picking up now. Also, my business; my lingerie line was stocked but the sales have been a little slow for a bit, it is picking up now. So, yes, it affected my business and life. But yet, we have to realize that once there is life, there is hope. So, you can only be grateful.

Do you consider this a time to rest and take a break from work?

To be honest, I would say that we have had a lot of rest, enough. It was just a long break that wasn’t needed, First week, second week and then third week and more. So, I won’t consider this a time to rest because I have rested enough. Resting for months that I don’t appreciate at all. I am actually a workaholic, I like to work. I am happy when I work

Tell us about your experience as Big Brother Africa housemate?

My experience in Big Brother was awesome. That was 2014. That was a long time ago and so many things have happened since then. Then, I was naïve and I was young. I would say that at the time, it was worth it. At the end of the day, everything that you go through in life is a stepping stone to where you are headed.

So, that was a phase in my life that I really appreciated. It started my journey thus far and helped me to have the foundation required. It was amazing being in the house, but then also it had its ups and downs. You know, Nigerians have this issue routing for ladies. I am glad that is changing now with Big Brother Nigeria considering the fact that Mercy won this year. That was a major challenge that I had then.

How did participating in the show affect your career?

I participated in the show in 2014 but before I went to the Big Brother house, I had tendered my resignation letter to Lagos State Internal Revenue. So, when I came out, I knew I wasn’t going back to work. I was going to focus more on my acting, production and everything I had for this next phase in my life. I would say that it didn’t affect my career in anyway. Instead, it helped my career in many ways.

What inspires the things that you do?

To be honest, what inspires me is the drive, the drive to achieve my dreams. The drive to achieve my goals in life and to get to a certain point where, I could genuinely give back to people, without limit. This is because I feel like one of my purposes in life is to help people. And to give back to people in any way that I can. So, the fact that I have these goals that I want to achieve in life is my driving force. So, every day when I wake up, I just want to keep working. So, I keep working and becoming a better version of myself.

What are some of the other things that occupy your time?

I watch movies, I read and I try to go for courses when I can. Yes, basically those are some of the things that occupy my time. I also try to be a creative mind. Sometimes, I just travel to re-evaluate myself, go back to the drawing board and think about what next.

What are some of the challenges? Did you feel like quitting at any point?

To be honest, yes there were times that I felt like quitting. But this was because at some point, my career was stagnant and I felt like I wasn’t doing enough. People underestimated me, they just assumed things that they didn’t really know anything about. They just thought, she is a reality star and that is that. So, I had to work hard to prove myself in the industry. Also, when I came out of big brother’s house, I had depression; it was hard trying to make a name for myself with everything going on, with the backlash and all the internet throws. It was really hard, it was just hard trying to prove yourself to people who don’t really know who you are.

They just assumed a lot of things and you just have to keep trying, working twice as hard. There were a couple of times that I felt like quitting but I kept telling myself, you are not a quitter.

You can do whatever it is that you want to do. You can achieve whatever it is that you want to achieve, and so I just get back up, keep pushing and striving. And then I pray to God, at the end of the day, God is my major source of strength. I would say that, HE has really been there for me in my worst moments. HE has actually brought me out of everything I never thought, I could overcome. Of course, there were times, I thought of quitting but I just didn’t let that weigh me down.

Tell us about the people you admire in the sector?

To be honest, I admire a lot of people. So, it is hard for me to pick or call names because they are a lot. You don’t want to call names and end up calling everyone. At the end of the day, in the industry now, we have a lot of women doing so many huge things. Look at Mo Abudu, Omoni Oboli, Kate Henshaw, Genevieve, and Funke Akindele. All these people, you find that they keep trying and trying to do great things. So, I admire a lot of people in the industry, young, old and even my friends. These are the people that you see, they have been there, they have been consistent and even working hard to achieve their goals. And they are still going at it and are still achieving it.

What are some of the changes that you would like to see in the sector?

I would like to see actors more respected, actors paid well and I would also like to see the crew members, the people behind the camera celebrated more. This is because they put in so much work and feel that they are not celebrated as much as they should. I would also like the government to involve themselves more in the industry because it needs a lot of attention now. Look at the whole coronavirus situation and everyone was stuck on Netflix, movies and everything. I would say that entertainment is the next big thing in the world right now. The movie industry, entertainment, arts and everything. So, having the government invest more in everything in our industry would go a long way in terms of financial stability, revenues for producers and all that. And also quality which I think that we are already doing, people are already taking their time to produce nice movies. So, for as much as I would like to see changes, I would like to say that people are already impacting , they are already making this changes gradually and we can only hope for the best at the end of the day.

What is your definition of style?

My definition of style would be whatever you are comfortable with. At the end of the day, the truth is that if you wear something that you are not comfortable with, you lose it. Style is whatever you are comfortable with, but being classy, has a bit of everything, sexy but still comfortable. If you are not comfortable, that is not style. If you are wearing something and you cannot walk properly, then it isn’t it. So, style for me would be simplicity. Here you can be effortlessly simple and still look classy and killing it.

What are the things that you won’t do in the name of fashion?

The things I wouldn’t do in the name of fashion would be to outdo myself and be uncomfortable. I would not wear certain things because they are in trend or in vogue if I am not comfortable in them.

What would you consider as the turning point in your career?

What I would consider as the turning point in my career was when I won the AMVCA for my movie, my first movie production. For me, that just made me realize that people are always watching and so in life you just have to stand out. That just gave me a certain kind of motivation to just keep working harder. That motivated me to my next film and the next film. It just kept pushing me to just do it, it could work and then my lingerie line just happened. That was a huge motivation for me, which was a turning point in my career. That also made me realise that it is not how far, but how well.

Who or what do you consider as the greatest influence in your career?

First of all, it is my family. My mum is a huge influence on my career; Multi Choice, Africa Magic and DSTV all have added to my career in so many ways, that I cannot begin to mention to be honest. I keep telling people that they are a huge part of my success story. And they have added value to me in so many ways. Dr Chukwu Eluka, my friends and everyone has paid their price in influencing my career.

Tell us about your beauty regimen. What is the secret of looking good?

I am one person that realised that the minute I stop using a lot of things on my skin, I started having this glow, started bouncing. So, I do more of oils, I scrub my face and go the Spa at least twice a month. I do like my scrubs and do rub a lot of oils on my skin.

What items do you cherish the most in your wardrobe?

I cherish my clothes. I have to wear clothes, I love clothes.

    How do you relax?

I watch movies, I love to go to the beach and just clear my head. And I love to travel and relax.

Wednesday’s reunion episode of the Big Brother Naija Pepper Dem re-union show saw the winner of the season, Mercy Eke clash with Omashola Kola-Oburoh

As it has been since the beginning of the re-union show, old wounds were revisited, and the Warri-born Omashola was attacked for calling Mercy a prostitute.

The show host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu asked former housemate Cindy if she was a gossip in the house, she denied it and former housemate Seyi Awolowo revolted, that he once caught her gossiping, with other housemates telling her to accept

Ebuka then went on to play a clip of when Omashola was reporting Mercy and Ike to Seyi, and in defense he explained that he was very offended with Mercy, which led to his shouting and anger, using hurtful words.

Mercy accused him of calling her a prostitute and he said he never did such. He then went on to tell her that she is not up to his league.

After the brawl, Ebuka asked former housemate Avala to settle the storm, and she told him that it is rude and wrong to call a woman a prostitute and Omashola at the end, apologized to Mercy, still insisting that he never called her a prostitute.

Both housemates ended the show telling viewers and fans that they have settled issues and it should not be re-visited again

BBNaija: 3 takeaways from Pepper Dem Reunion

    By Gbenga Bada

As the reunion of Big Brother Naija Pepper Dem housemates enters the second week, Jackye, Venita, and Ella were the main attraction. Here are three takeaways from week two.

Jackye says she might get bigger boobs

The drama continued when the host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu decided to talk about pretenders in the house. Jackye was quick to announce that Khafi was the biggest pretender in the house. Jackye said Khafi pretended to be a good and caring personality but she is not. Jackye reminisced on a conversation with Khafi on Mercy’s bum and how she twisted the conversation to curry Mercy’s favour.

Jackye also used the opportunity to say she has no ill feelings for body enhancement. The techy ex-housemate said it is obvious she has small boobs and there’s every possibility of enhancing her boobs.

I believe Ella is bipolar and deceitful – Venita

Another round of drama began when Ebuka sought to know the genesis of the issue between Venita, KimOprah, and Ella.

Venita expressed her dissatisfaction with Ella’s attitude saying she feels the vocalist is bipolar and deceitful.

“I believe Ella is deceitful and bipolar with five different personalities all in one,” Venita blurted out after explaining how Ella allegedly deceived other ex-housemates.

Venita said Ella deceived all housemates to get money from them at different times after which she went public to say she was broke and her mum was sick and she later shared a picture of herself performing at a gig looking sweet.

In response to the allegations against Ella on being deceitful and not straightforward, the vocalist insisted her mum was ill and that she never lied about her mum’s health. Ella further said she switched off from other ex-housemates because she had to be with her mum who was angry with her for soliciting funds from the public to support her. An angry Mercy had queried if Ella was doing drugs to which she stuttered but denied doing drugs. An emotional Ella broke down saying she is being perceived as a bad and deceitful person despite dealing with her sick mum’s displeasure over her decision to solicit funds from the public.

  • With what’d they brew BBNaija?

    By Kayode Robert Idowu

Season Four edition of reality television show, Big Brother Nigeria (BBNaija), came to a sweltering climax early last week with Mercy Eke topping the pack of 26 housemates at the starting line when the house opened 99 days earlier. The 26-year-old, who made history as the first female winner of the show, edged out four other finalists to net the N30million cash award and other prizes totalling N30million more.

Show host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, said viewers thumbed in more than 250million votes during the season, of which the final week of the show alone recorded over 50million votes. Subsequent reports estimated that BBNaija voters must have doled out a cumulative N7.2billion on their participation, considering that it cost 30 naira to cast a vote.

The viewership size commanded by the show was another factor. Even though this country yet lacks capacity for instant measurement with statistical accuracy of viewership numbers attracted by an item on television, there is little doubt concerning the sheer magnetic pull the BBNaija show exerted on viewers – if at no other time, during the grand finale. Some personal experiences of mine were instructive in this regard. I recall that most houses in my neighbourhood left their generators running despite availability of public power supply, apparently so as not to miss a moment of the show in the event that public power fails. I also remember putting a call through to my daughter in her school outside of Lagos while the show was underway and she failed to pick her phone. Sometime later when she returned the call, I inquired where she had been and she responded quite petulantly (like I should’ve known without being told) that the entire university community was in the Common Room watching the BBNaija curtains episode on television.

Besides those personal experiences, the Nigerianised reality show is clearly ballooning by the year in contrast to its continental precursor, Big Brother Africa, which has been shelved by producer M-net since 2014 after nine seasons interspersed with a four-year break between the maiden edition in 2003 and the second season in 2007. For the continental show, the winning prize was raised to US$300,000 in 2012, where it held down until the programme was suspended in 2014. With BBNaija, however, other than the winner’s prize haul that grew to N60million in the latest season, from N45million a year earlier, 2019 auditions were held in eight locations across Nigeria – two more than the six centres used in 2018, and five more than the three centres used for the 2017 season.

While shelving Big Brother Africa after nine seasons in 2014, M-net said the show was under re-evaluation for strategic direction. That was the point at which BBNaija took centre stage. But unlike Big Brother Angola, which started off after that southern African country was displaced from the continental show by Rwanda in 2014 only to go comatose as it now appears, the Nigerian edition is bourgeoning.

Not that the Nigerian reality show has been without controversy. There have been fierce denunciations by moralists, who viewed the loose conduct of housemates during the show as exerting deeply corruptive influence on societal values. That is not mentioning culture minders, like the helmsman of National Council of Arts and Culture (NCAC) Otunba Segun Runsewe, who have strongly remonstrated at the denigration of our culture’s puritan elements by housemates’ activities on the show.

And there is yet no let up. Even on the heels of the latest season’s climax last week, a civil society group urged government to scrap BBNaija, arguing that the show has had no positive influence on youths and societal morality. The chair of Anambra State chapter of the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), Vincent Ezekwueme, added in a statement: “The show has painful, shameful, negative and devastating impact on our youths, culture and society. Wealth without wisdom is one of the worst blunders of the world.”

Besides the morality argument, other citizens had taken aim at the show on account of seeming value misplacement of the youth who constitute the bulk of its following. Late last July, the presidential candidate of Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 2019 poll and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Deputy Governor, Kingsley Moghalu, chided the tendency of youths to stay off voting in real elections while eagerly registering their preference on reality TV like BBNaija. “Our youth cheat themselves when they don’t vote, spend their time on the wrong things on social media, follow the glitterati (@BBNaijafan) instead of the literati (knowledge), and vote, not for ‘ought to win’ but ‘likely to win’ (bandwagon to nowhere, i.e. one chance!),” he wrote on Twitter, adding: “Total votes cast on Big Brother Nigeria 2018 = 170m. Total votes cast in general election 2019 = 27m. We need to get serious about rescuing our country from the doldrums, not just wishing away our reality in reality TV shows. We can view @BBNaija AND vote right in elections!”

Moghalu would be a quantum more distressed if he reckoned with the 2019 record of participation in BBNaija put at more than 250million votes. And there is every reason for anyone else to be troubled. Since the restoration of electoral democracy in 1999, this country recorded its lowest voter turnout – 34.75 percent – in the February 23rd presidential election. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the total number of accredited voters was 29,364,209, out of some 82.3million registered persons. And the commission’s disaggregation of the voter roll showed youths from 18 to 35 years constituting 51.11 percent of the voter population. Others as the middle-aged (36 to 50 years), 29.9percent, the elderly (51 to 70 years), 15.22 percent and the old (70+ years), 3.69 percent. You do not need a demographic breakdown of those who voted in the 2019 election to see that the largest voter constituency – the youth – was not mobilised for the poll. Yet they paid their way to avidly vote on BBNaija!

I share the view that there are enormous moral defects in the reality show warranting an overhaul of its content, if not the show altogether. But having said that, we should interrogate what it is about the show that so connects with the public, especially youths, to elicit the following we see. The following, to my mind, might be a symptom of a character disease in the society. Of course, a cerebral fiend of mine pointed out it could well be a sectional (i.e., southern Nigeria) trend that is not replicated all over the country. But that hardly explains the show’s staying power, including the corporate buy-in evidenced in its competing headline sponsorship – and that, in contrast to other shows (there are currently a teachers’ reality show and business reality show, among others on television) that exist only on the fringe of public consciousness.

The voter zeal in BBNaija should be another point of interest. It has been argued that the show’s voters were afforded some ease and risk-free environment for their participation, besides that they were sufficiently convinced their votes truly determine the fate of the housemates. The moral for our democracy would to be for the political class to work hard at making the electoral environment violence-free, and collaborate with the electoral umpire at ensuring that votes cast truly determine electoral outcomes. And INEC, for its part, could explore what is adaptable from the reality show’s voting system to enhance voter interest and confidence.
